Three freshman who can make an instant impact

Three Tigers among the Freshman All-Impact Team.

Let’s dive into the 2022 campaign and the new roster under Brian Kelly. He joined the Tigers after a decade-long run at Notre Dame where he won a total of 92 games with the Fighting Irish.

Kelly brings in a whole new staff plus the return of interim head coach Brad Davis that will resume his duties as the offensive line coach. There will be competition all over the roster as Kelly looks to revive LSU football after the two-season letdown. The Tigers won just 11 combined games in that stretch. As a head coach of Notre Dame, Kelly won 11 games three times over the last four seasons.

With the spirit of competition on the roster, there are several fresh faces who could make an impact in their freshman season. These players were among those signed in Kelly’s first class that finished ranked No. 12 overall. The members of the All-Impact team don’t include five-star quarterback, Walker Howard. Instead, we have some new faces in the trenches that want to improve a unit that underperformed under the watch of the previous regime.

We’ve established that it’s rare for freshmen offensive linemen to play and succeed immediately. There’s a chance neither Campbell nor Jones plays next season. But with the Tigers losing four starters along the offensive front, it’s a decent bet that at least once of them will be forced to play significant snaps. There’s more need along the interior of the line for LSU, but Campbell, a tackle, still probably has the best chance to start as an early enrollee.

Starting on the offensive side of the ball, you have an offensive line duo that can jump in immediately.

We start with one right out of the Tigers’ backyard.

Five freshmen most likely to see the field for LSU in 2022

Examining which of LSU’s newcomers will have a chance to make an immediate impact in 2022

With signing day now done, there is some clarity regarding what rosters may look like across college football in 2022.

It’s been a hectic couple of months all over the sport. With coaching changes, a flurry of transfers, and players declaring for the NFL draft. This off-season has provided more roster shakeup than any in recent memory.

That holds true for LSU as well.

Over the last couple of years, the previous coaching staff didn’t demonstrate much competence when it came to managing a roster. On top of that, coaching changes always lead to their own list of personnel shakeups.

There will be more moves to come throughout the spring and summer. It isn’t over yet. But the roster LSU has now should look close to the one it takes the field in the opener against Florida State.

All things considered, LSU will bring in a decent freshmen class. Given the inexperience all over the team, a lot of these guys will have opportunities to see the field right away.

Good teams usually need some contributions from first-year players if they want to have success. That could go even further for LSU, who’s just counting on these recruits to have enough athletes on scholarship.

Let’s look at the five freshmen most likely to see the field in 2022.

LSU 2022 signee Will Campbell’s stock is rising

Campbell is rising on recruiting boards.

One of the biggest additions to watch as spring football approaches will be Will Campbell of Neville (Monroe, Louisiana). He is the highest-rated signee from the 2022 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. A top 30 player in the country, Campbell could find his way into the starting lineup for new head coach Brian Kelly.

According to Craig Haubert and Tom Lugenbill of ESPN (subscription required), among the top recruits that are climbing in the final ESPN300 rankings include the top signee of the LSU 2022 class, Will Campbell.

Campbell is expected to be among those fighting for a starting job at offensive tackle for Brad Davis in 2022. The team added four-star transfer Miles Frazier and FCS offensive tackle Tre’Mond Shorts. Both could be starters on the offensive line or they could find themselves in a fight with incumbent starter Cam Wire and freshman newcomer Will Campbell.

What ESPN Says…

Among an excellent group of offensive linemen, Campbell has established himself as one of the elite offensive tackles in this class. Game film that continues to show dominance coupled with a strong performance during the Under Armour All-America week, Campbell made it clear he’s deserving of a fifth star. He has a lean, powerful frame as a run-blocker (6-6, 275), which blends well with sound body control and agile feet in pass protection. Further bulk and strength should only improve with time in the Tigers’ weight program. Campbell is also a confident player who has demonstrated a strong understanding for the position. As an early enrollee, he’s a great candidate to play this fall in Baton Rouge.

Position breakdown for LSU’s 2022 recruiting class ahead of early signing period

Plenty of work to be done.

The LSU Tigers currently have 11 commitments ahead of the early signing period that begins on Wednesday. Currently, they are without a commitment at wide receiver, running back, safety, and edge.

Brian Kelly has plenty of work to be done over the next several days and into February. As they work to fill this class with incoming freshmen or look to add players from the transfer portal.

Not to mention continuing to fill out his coaching staff. So far that has been a slow process with just three coaches being named to his 2022 staff. Before we get into more possibilities on the coaching staff, we look at each position group heading into the signing period.

Brian Kelly and the Louisiana recruits among the top storylines in the Early Signing Period

How many of the top Louisiana prospects will sign with LSU?

Based on the new overall rankings from 247Sports which factors in transfers, the LSU Tigers currently sit as the No. 25 class in 2022. They were listed as a top-five team prior to the announcement that Ed Orgeron wouldn’t be retained beyond the 2021 season.

There is a new regime in town and they have plenty of work to do in order to get this class rolling in the right direction. If the Tigers hope to have a bounce-back season in 2022, they need to find some quality recruits to buy into what the former Notre Dame head coach is selling.

According to The Athletic (subscription required), Brian Kelly and LSU are among the top 10 storylines to watch on early signing day.

Five-star quarterback and LSU commit Walker Howard of Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More took a visit to Notre Dame after the Tigers moved on from coach Ed Orgeron. There seemed to be a chance that Brian Kelly, then the head coach of the Irish, was going to flip the prized QB recruit.

Then Kelly took the LSU job. Howard is staying put. It’s always good to start a new job with a five-star, in-state quarterback already in the fold.

But what about the rest of the state of Louisiana?

LSU is currently recruiting Mathews, Preston, four-star athlete Kendrick Law of Shreveport Captain Shreve and four-star defensive lineman Quency Wiggins of Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep Academy. All four are top-100 players who have yet to issue a commitment.

Kelly presumably took the job because he wanted to build a national title-caliber roster. That starts with Louisana. Can he get off to the right start by landing these four?

The state of Louisiana is a recruiting hotbed as plenty of talent from the state can be seen across the college football landscape. More often than not, the top guys stay home and play for the Purple and Gold. A look at the top 10 guys and where they could be headed as ESP approaches.

Top 15 recruiting classes as early signing day approaches

Where LSU ranks in recruiting just two weeks from the early signing period.

The clock is ticking on the 2022 recruiting class for the LSU Tigers. Now that a head coach is in place, he must re-recruit the guys already committed to the class. Brian Kelly will also be tasked with filling out his staff on top of closing out a few recruiting deals.

The two biggest names of the class are Will Campbell and Walker Howard, following the announcement of Kelly being hired, they seemed locked in. Howard was more vocal about it than their five-star offensive tackle pledge.

The commitments of both tight ends in Jake Johnson and Mason Taylor could be greatly impacted by who the offensive coordinator will be. With just two weeks until the early signing period, we look at the top 15 classes according to 247Sports team composite rankings.

LSU pledge tweets that he is locked in with the Tigers

Five-star offensive tackle Will Campbell reaffirms his commitment to LSU, plans on enrolling in January.

There is no question that the offensive line for the LSU Tigers have struggled this year. However, help could be on the way as early as next season with one of the top offensive tackles in the country, Will Campbell.

Campbell is the No. 4 offensive tackle in the country and No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana. The five-star composite recruit could help this offensive line immensely. Campbell pledged to play football for LSU on Jan. 30, 2021. Eight months later it seems some are questioning whether or not he will stay committed based on what is going on within the program.

Contrary to some reports, I have not had any thoughts on decommitting form LSU. I am 100% locked in and look forward to enrolling in January. Coach O, Coach Davis, and Coach Mason have treated me and my family one of their own throughout this process. I can’t wait to bring a national championship back to Baton Rouge.

Geaux Tigers

He shared his thoughts on Twitter following the Tigers 28-25 win over Mississippi State.

Will Campbell is the No. 2 ranked prospect in the Tigers 2022 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. Emery Jones and Bo Borderlon are the other two offensive linemen who have also pledged to play in Baton Rouge.

Each of the three could be in the running to help an offensive line that could lose a few starters following the season. Coach Brad Davis has work to do in order to get this offensive line trending in the right direction once again.

Where LSU commits rank in the updated Rivals’ top 250 list

10 of LSU’s 15 commits in the 2022 class rank among Rivals’ top 250 prospects.

Head coach Ed Orgeron and the staff were off to a hot start on the 2022 recruiting trail. They were among the top four classes but have cooled off recently. Despite losing a pledge from a top-two safety in Jacoby Mathews, they are still in the top 10 classes for 2022.

Looking at the different rankings, 247Sports composite has the ’22 class as the No. 6 overall class. ESPN ranks the Tigers at No. 6 as well. Rivals has the LSU Tigers as the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in 2022.

The Tigers have a total of 15 recruits committed to the class. Of the 15 commits, 10 fall in the Rivals top 250 prospects.

We take a look at where each of the 10 commits are ranked among their peers.
