Houston beat West Virginia on a walk-off Hail Mary TD in what could be the wildest finish of the week

HOUSTON!

The Houston Cougars weren’t afraid of only having three seconds in the game to score a walk-off Hail Mary touchdown.

Indeed, Houston quarterback Donovan Smith made one of the best throws you’ll see this college football season on a last-second laser to the end zone on West Virginia’s defense to try and win the game.

As the ball bobbled between hands as it hit receivers and defenders, it’d be Cougars wideout Stephon Johnson who would snag the pass for the walk-off touchdown and the 41-39 win for Houston.

This was the kind of dramatic finish that college football fans dream of, and it’d be Johnson to haul in the score as the Cougars would get the best of the Mountaineers right at the last second.

Just look at how the probability swung in Houston’s direction as that final pass hit Johnson’s hands.

Like, woah. This was Christmas morning on a Thursday night for Houston fans as they got the win in the most stunning way possible.

Big 12 Power Rankings heading into the Red River Rivalry game

Texas and Oklahoma take the top spots in the power rankings, but West Virginia surges for Week 6.

The Big 12 has hasn’t displayed much power despite the two teams at the top of the league. One program looks to be capitalizing on that lack of power.

The West Virginia Mountaineers improved to 4-1 after defeating the TCU Horned Frogs (3-2) in Fort Worth on Saturday. The game puts the Mountaineers into the Big 12 title conversation which could be the surprise of the year in the conference.

TCU and Texas Tech continue to underwhelm, although the Red Raiders did secure a bounce-back win against Houston. It seems evident that neither team will compete for the conference contrary to what I predicted heading into the season.

Kansas State and Oklahoma State enjoyed the week off ahead of Friday’s game in Stillwater.

Let’s power rank the conference after five weeks of football.

College Football Week 3 Winners and Losers: Florida gets a signature win under Billy Napier, trouble brewing in Tuscaloosa

What looked like a weak slate on Saturday turned out to be more exciting than we anticipated.

On paper, Week 3 of the college football season looked pretty bleak.

The end result was far from the most exciting weekend we’ll see this season, but it still featured more thrilling matchups than we anticipated. Several top teams struggled early with Georgia, Texas, Florida State and Alabama all battling to put away opponents they were heavily favored against.

Only one major upset ultimately played out as No. 9 Tennessee fell in Gainesville against Florida for the 10th-straight time, sending the Volunteers spiraling down the polls and likely out of contention in the SEC East.

It seems like a chaotic season could be in the works as we still have significant questions about a number of teams. Many of those questions are likely to be answered in what is an absolutely loaded Week 4 slate.

In the meantime, here are the winners and losers from Week 3 in college football.

Post-spring Big 12 football record predictions for 2023

Texas is still our favorite in post-spring Big 12 record predictions.

Spring football is over in Austin, and there’s plenty to be excited about for the 2023 squad. The excitement starts with the team’s starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers dropped a dime into the hands of receiver Xavier Worthy on a deep corner route, hitting Worthy in stride. More importantly, he completed many of the shorter to intermediate throws that he missed last season.

The next biggest takeaway is Texas has perhaps the most dynamic big-bodied receiver it has ever had in AD Mitchell. The Georgia transfer showcased his athleticism in the Orange and White game with a terrific one-handed touchdown snag.

Mitchell’s emergence paired with Ewers’ improved accuracy makes Texas a dangerous cover defensively. Adding to the degree of difficulty, receivers Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington appear to have hit a new gear.

Here’s a look at how the Big 12 race could unfold in 2023.

How do Oklahoma and the Big 12 stack up in ESPN’s returning production for 2023?

Taking a look at how the Big 12 stacks up in ESPN’s returning production for the 2023 season.

Winter workouts are underway, and spring ball is right around the corner. It’s that time of the football schedule when teams are figuring out how to deal with the turnover they endured with NFL draft declarations and transfer portal departures.

Turnover is the name of the game in college football. The teams that consistently win are the teams that have had the best recruiting classes, which has allowed them to withstand that turnover.

Each offseason, ESPN’s Bill Connelly takes a look at the roster overhauls to determine which teams have the greatest amount of returning production (ESPN+). Returning production has had an impact in his SP+ ratings.

On average, teams returning at least 80% of production improve by about 5.8 adjusted points per game in the following season’s SP+ ratings. That’s a pretty significant bump! For a team ranked 25th in SP+ last year, adding 5.8 points to its rating would have bumped it to 10th. And in the past two seasons that weren’t majorly impacted by a pandemic (2019 and 2022), the average improvement for teams at 80% or higher is 6.8 points. – Connelly, ESPN

Not all programs are alike, however. Alabama, which ranked 125 in returning production, will be able to withstand losses a bit easier because they’ve recruited better than other teams in the bottom 33. We’ll have to wait and see if teams like TCU and Cincinnati are able to overcome their lack of returning production. Interestingly, those two schools each appeared in the College Football Playoff in the last two seasons.

Here’s how Connelly weighs the offense:

Broken out by position/player, you’re looking at roughly 29% for the quarterback, 6% for the running back and each of four wide receivers and/or tight ends and 9% for each offensive lineman. With each year of data, offensive line snaps become a heavier piece of the equation, which I find interesting. – Connelly, ESPN

So based on his equation, the Sooners lost 27% along the offensive line with the departures of [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Wanya Morris[/autotag], and [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag]. Toss in another 18% for the losses of [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag], [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], and [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], and the Sooners have lost roughly 45% of their offensive production from a year ago.

Now the Sooners did welcome transfer additions [autotag]Walter Rouse[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Shaffer[/autotag] to replace two of their three departing offensive line starters, but given that Shaffer is coming from the Group of Five, his snaps don’t count as much as [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag]’s.

Conversely, here’s how he evaluates the defensive side of the ball.

Perhaps surprisingly, turnover in the back of the defense causes far more of a shift in a team’s SP+ rating from year to year than turnover up front. By position, defensive backs make up about 46% of the defensive formula, while linebackers are at 40% and the defensive line is at 14%. – Connelly, ESPN

The Sooners’ biggest departures were at the linebacker level with [autotag]David Ugwoegbu[/autotag] (transfer portal) and [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag] (NFL) moving on. They also lost [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeffery Johnson[/autotag], but according to Connelly’s metrics, those snaps don’t weigh as heavily.

Oklahoma added some pieces along the defensive front to help bolster its pass rush and mitigate the losses. However, they are hoping for their young linebacker corp to take a step forward in 2023 to replace their veteran backers.

Here’s a look at how the Big 12 stacks up in terms of ESPN’s

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

West Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Mountaineers miss from the Big 12 slate?

The3 Mountaineers don’t have to deal with all things Kansas. They miss both Kansas and Kansas State – it’s not bad to miss the defending Big 12 champion – and they also don’t have to deal with Texas. This year, that’s a huge plus.

Missing Iowa State … ehhhhh. It was one of the Big 12’s worst teams last year, but it should be improved. Even so, that wouldn’t be a bad team to have as opposed to, say, Oklahoma.

But …

West Virginia Football Schedule What Really Matters

There aren’t two road games in a row all year, so the Mountaineers should be able to settle in a bit before Big 12 play.

They alternate road and home games in Big 12 play, but with a week off before going to Houston, they only leave Morgantown once from September 9th until October 12th. That doesn’t mean the slate is easy, but the pain is spread out.

Getting TCU, Oklahoma State, and BYU at home helps, but that’s offset by playing five Big 12 road games. That, and …

West Virginia Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

This might be the Big 12’s toughest schedule.

There’s the easy game against Duquesne, but starting the season off at Penn State and hosting Pitt in non-conference play is a big problem.

It’s not that the Mountaineers can’t be more than just competitive in the Big 12 road games, it’s that there’s an extra one and none of them will be breezes.

It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins – it would’ve been nice to have three guaranteed warm-up games before dealing with the Big 12.

2023 College Football Schedules: All 133 Teams

Texas Football: One Big 12 coach says he knows his opponents for 2023

Neal Brown knows who his team is playing. Why don’t we know?

The Big 12 has informed at least one football coach who his team will play in 2023. That is, if West Virginia head coach Neal Brown is to be believed.

Brown said the following of his 2023 Big 12 football schedule.

I know who we are playing, but I don’t know when we are playing them.

The secrecy over the schedule is befuddling, as is its presumed lack of completion. Brown knows his 2023 opponents. Why don’t we know as well?

The SEC announced its 2023 slate in September. In late October, the Big Ten followed with its own schedule. The slow moving Pac-12 announced its set of games on January 18. The Big 12 doesn’t yet have an announcement date.

There’s no reason why conference commissioner Brett Yormark couldn’t let the public know each team’s opponents without the specifics of when and where games would be played. Even so, we’re still waiting for any word of a schedule announcement.

It’s unclear as to what is the hold up for the league, but the Big 12’s indecision is yet another reason for the Longhorns to leave the middling conference.

Former UGA quarterback JT Daniels announces transfer destination

Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback J.T. Daniels is expected to transfer to Rice

Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback J.T. Daniels is reportedly transferring to Rice. The Rice Owls made a bowl game in 2022 and finished 5-8. Daniels will look to win the starting job at Rice.

The Owls have notable games in 2023 against Houston, BYU and Texas. Daniels will likely face competition from Rice quarterback T.J. McMahon, who started 10 games in 2022 and threw 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for the Owls.

Daniels lost the job as starting quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers late in the season. West Virginia went 5-7 in a disappointing season. Garrett Greene gained the starting job over Daniels because he is more mobile, which opened West Virginia’s rushing attack.

Daniels will have one or two years of eligibility at his new schools depending on if he gets an injury waiver from the NCAA. This season, Daniels threw 13 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions and 2,107 passing yards for West Virginia.

Daniels transferred from Georgia to West Virginia in early 2022. The former five-star recruit entered the transfer portal after Georgia won the national championship in January.

Daniels finished his career with an undefeated record as the starting quarterback at Georgia, but he lost his starting job to Stetson Bennett early in the 2021 college football season. Daniels battled injuries throughout his time at the University of Georgia and during much of his college football career.

Daniels missed several games during his time at Georgia after he was diagnosed with a strained oblique muscle.

Daniels transferred to Georgia from USC in 2020. He started multiple games for Georgia in 2020 and was expected to be the starting quarterback for Georgia’s 2021 season, but he struggled with injuries early in the season while Stetson Bennett proved himself a championship-caliber quarterback.

Daniels played in nine games in his Georgia football career from 2020-2021. He threw 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions during his time in Athens.

Plot twist: Graham Harrell could coach against USC in 2024 Big Ten football season

Former #USC OC Graham Harrell is waiting to see what the 2024 #B1G football schedule will look like. If USC plays Purdue, the Trojans will likely face Harrell.

The Big Ten Conference is one year away for the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins. In 2024, the new era begins for the Los Angeles schools and for the Big Ten as well.

When the Trojans make the jump, there will probably be a very familiar face coaching on the sidelines for one Big Ten program — if he doesn’t get fired before then. That coach is Graham Harrell, the former USC offensive coordinator who went to West Virginia in the same role.

After just one year with the Mountaineers, Harrell is joining the Purdue Boilermaker staff with new head coach Ryan Walters, who was the defensive coordinator at Illinois. It is quite a turn of events in the coaching carousel, and it puts USC in Purdue’s path, though a 2024 Big Ten football schedule has yet to be revealed. That’s the next big point of uncertainty which still has to be resolved.

West Virginia finished just 5-7 this season, although the Mountaineers averaged 30.6 points per game (90th in the country). Former USC QB JT Daniels got most of the work for the Mountaineers.

Purdue’s offense averaged 28.1 PPG (130th in the nation), and we can only imagine what it will look like with Harrell’s air-raid-style offense.

Walters was a strong candidate for the Colorado Buffaloes job — his alma mater — before the school hired Deion Sanders. Nonetheless, he got a Big Ten job and takes over the team that won the Big Ten West this season.

In 2024, Graham Harrell will face the USC Trojans — in the Big Ten. Who ever saw that coming?

Former UGA quarterback JT Daniels enters transfer portal again

West Virginia started quarterback Garrett Greene in place of Daniels. The Mountaineers played Greene after Daniels struggled in West Virginia’s comeback win over Oklahoma.

Daniels transferred from Georgia to West Virginia this offseason. The former five-star recruit entered the transfer portal after Georgia won the national championship in January.

Why did West Virginia start Greene over Daniels? It is similar to why Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett got the nod over Daniels midway through 2021. Greene is more mobile and opens West Virginia’s rushing attack. Greene finished the year with 276 rushing yards. Daniels, in contrast, has never finished a season with positive rushing yards. West Virginia needed a boost in the run game, so it turned to Garrett Greene.

We will provide updates on where Daniels plans to transfer. The former five-star recruit has a lot of talent, but needs to be in an offense that does not require him to be a rushing threat.
