Instant analysis and recap of Packers’ 23-21 loss to Commanders in Week 7

Recapping the Packers’ 23-21 loss to the Commanders in Week 7 of the 2022 season.

The Green Bay Packers (3-4) gave up a 14-3 lead by allowing 20 straight points and were then unable to complete the comeback on Sunday at FedEx Field, losing 23-21 to the Washington Commanders to extend the team’s losing streak to three games.

It was over when…

… Terry McLaurin beat Jaire Alexander for a 12-yard completion to convert 3rd-and-9 with 2:06 left in the fourth quarter.

Game balls

– RB Aaron Jones: He received only eight carries (for 23 yards), but he also caught nine passes and scored both of the team’s touchdowns, including a pretty 22-yard catch in the fourth quarter.

– OLB Preston Smith/LB De’Vondre Campbell: Smith was consistently disruptive, especially on the edge against the run. Campbell had a pick-six and three tackles for losses.

– CB Keisean Nixon: The Commanders didn’t give him a kickoff return opportunity, but he had two tackles on special teams.

Key stat

0-for-7: The Packers didn’t convert a single third down or fourth down.

Scoring

7-0: Aaron Jones 4-yard touchdown (extra point)
7-3: Joey Slye 22-yard field goal
14-3: De’Vondre Campbell 63-yard interception return touchdown (extra point)
14-10: Antonio Gibson 9-yard touchdown (extra point)
14-17: Terry McLaurin 37-yard touchdown (extra point)
14-20: Joey Slye 31-yard field goal
14-23: Joey Slye 19-yard field goal
21-23: Aaron Jones 21-yard touchdown (extra point)

Quick hits

– The Packers are a rudderless football team because they don’t do anything well consistently.

– The Commanders held the ball for over 37 minutes and ran 72 plays compared to just 47 plays for the Packers.

– The Packers are fortunate the defense finished 1-for-4 allowing touchdowns inside the red zone or this would have been a blowout.

– Penalties, including one negating a defensive touchdown, killed this team.

– The Packers ran the ball 12 times compared to 35 dropbacks for Aaron Rodgers.

– Another mostly dominant start for the Packers defense devolved quickly. Washington started the second half with three-straight scoring drives. Overall the Commanders rushed for 166 yards.

– The Packers got four of the team’s 16 first downs via penalty, including three on the final touchdown drive.

– Catching the ball was a big issue for the Packers passing game. So was accuracy from the 38-year-old quarterback with a bum thumb.

– Romeo Doubs didn’t catch a single one of his four targets, including three drops.

– The Packers have lost to Daniel Jones, Zach Wilson and Taylor Heinicke over the last three weeks. Guess who is next?

– The Packers are staring a 3-5 start straight in the face. Can this team get things solved in time for next week’s primetime showdown?

What’s next

The Packers go on the road to play the Buffalo Bills, who are coming off a bye week.

Colts’ player of the game vs. Titans: WR Parris Campbell

Colts WR Parris Campbell is the player of the game from the Week 7 loss to the Titans.

The Tennessee Titans (4-2) complete the regular season sweep of the Indianapolis Colts (3-3-1) with a 19-10 win at Nissan Stadium.

Frank Reich’s offense struggled to find momentum in this one, as the offensive line issues reared their ugly heads and Matt Ryan threw a pair of costly interceptions.

One player who performed well for the second week in a row was wide receiver Parris Campbell, who has burst onto the scene as of late.

The fourth-year player out of Ohio State finished the day with 10 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. His athletic ability was on full display as Matt Ryan found him in the corner of the end zone on a leaping grab in the third quarter. The talent has always been there with Campbell, but injuries have sidelined him during the early stages of his career. Expect his role to only get bigger as the Colts try to save their season down the stretch.

The trio of Campbell, Michael Pittman Jr., and rookie Alec Pierce could be a deadly combination as the Colts try to help Matt Ryan on offense.

However, if the quarterback has no time to throw them a talented group of receivers means virtually nothing. Hopefully, Frank Reich can fix some of these glaring issues as Indianapolis hosts Washington next week.

Maliek Collins exits game vs. Raiders with injury

Collins went down with an injury midway through the #Texans’ matchup against the #Raiders on Sunday

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”lIEx5FaPVF-2317001-7498″]

Maliek Collins left the Houston Texans’ Week 7 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders with an injury. His status is currently listed as questionable, and the nature of the injury is unknown.

The injury came after a play where Rasheem Green got in the Raiders’ backfield to register a sack on quarterback Derek Carr. On the ensuing play, Carr dropped back to throw, completing his pass for a modest gain. Collins went down after a great effort in the pass rush and was helped off the field.

His absence in the Texans’ defense will be sorely missed, as Collins has been one of the more consistent contributors on the unit this season. In his first season in Houston, Collins has made quite the impression on his defensive coaches, who rely on him for push against opposing offensive lines.

He is a 27-year-old veteran who has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders in recent years.

Takeaways: Falcons secondary roasted in 35-17 loss to Bengals

The Falcons couldn’t contain the Bengals offense in Week 7, allowing 537 yards during Sunday’s 35-17 loss.

The Atlanta Falcons couldn’t contain the Cincinnati Bengals offense in Week 7, allowing over 530 yards during Sunday’s 35-17 loss.

Falcons QB Marcus Mariota, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week, was no match for the Bengals’ plethora of offensive weapons. Here are six takeaways from Atlanta’s Week 7 loss in Cincinnati.

Texans announce inactives for Week 7 matchup vs Raiders

These players will need to wait another week to see the field for the #Texans

The Houston Texans announced their Week 7 inactives about an hour before their matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Five players won’t see the field for Houston in the battle to decide the AFC’s worst team, with three defenders and two offensive players tapped to ride the bench against Las Vegas.

Among the players who will not participate is offensive lineman Austin Deculus, who was listed as questionable on the Texans’ injury report heading into this game. The others were all part of the team’s practice sessions in preparation for the Raiders but will have to wait another week to see the field.

On offense, Deculus will be joined by receiver Tyler Johnson on the bench. Johnson is a bit of a wildcard in Houston’s offense anyway and was unlikely to make much of an impact for the team in the effort.

Linebacker Jake Hansen, defensive back Issac Yiadom, and defensive lineman Demone Harris will all be inactive for the defense and are sure to be eager to get back to action next week. Hansen is a casualty of rookie Christian Harris’ activation off injured reserve this week and is to be considered the next man up in the Texans’ linebacker corps.

Yiadom is a special teams contributor who has only seen the field for a handful of defensive snaps this season, while the lineman Harris was a key fixture of Houston’s Week 1 tie with the Indianapolis Colts when he recorded two tackles.

With these moves, Houston has made it clear which players they think will give them the best chance to win this week. Victory in this matchup will decide which of the two teams will be considered the AFC’s worst team by record, so the personnel decisions made on Sunday are sure to have implications for the game’s outcome.

Broncos inactives: 6 players won’t play vs. Jets

Broncos inactives today: Wilson, Bassey, Sterns, Jewell, Albert O and Virgil.

The Denver Broncos have announced their list of inactive players for Sunday’s home game against the New York Jets.

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson (hamstring), cornerback Essang Bassey (hamstring), safety Caden Sterns (hip), inside linebacker Josey Jewell (knee), tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and wide receiver Jalen Virgil will not play in Week 7.

On offense, the Broncos are turning to quarterback Brett Rypien with Wilson sidelined. Rypien will be making his second career start — his first start was a 37-28 win over the Jets in 2020.

On defense, Alex Singleton will continue filling in for Jewell.

Denver elevated third-string QB Josh Johnson from the practice squad to the game-day roster to serve as Rypien’s backup against New York. The Broncos also elevated long snapper Mitchell Fraboni, who is filling in until Jacob Bobenmoyer returns from injured reserve.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:05 p.m. MT on CBS (view the TV map).

WATCH: Falcons QB Marcus Mariota throws 75-yard TD pass

The Falcons scored 10 points in the final 40 seconds of the first half to cut the Bengals’ lead to 28-17.

The Falcons are doing what they can to keep themselves in the game against the Bengals. Cincinnati took a 28-7 lead just before the half, but Atlanta went on to score 10 points in less than 40 seconds to make it a 28-17 Bengals lead at halftime.

First, QB Marcus Mariota completed this 75-yard touchdown bomb to WR Damiere Byrd.

The Falcons would get the ball back after a Bengals punt, which kick returner Avery Williams nearly returned for a touchdown. Nonetheless, Williams’ return set up an easy Younghoe Koo field goal to cut the lead to 11 at the half.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell injures hamstring, will not return

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell left Sunday’s game against the Bengals due to a hamstring injury and will NOT return.

Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell limped off the field in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Terrell, who injured his thigh during last week’s win over the San Francisco 49ers, has officially been ruled out with a hamstring injury, the team announced on Twitter.

The Falcons were already banged up at cornerback coming into Week 7. Casey Hayward was placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday, leaving Darren Hall and Cornell Armstrong as the current starting cornerbacks.

Cincinnati holds a 14-0 first-quarter lead over Atlanta.
