Broncos will have Trey Marshall fill in for Kareem Jackson at safety

The Broncos will start Trey Marshall in the place of suspended safety Kareem Jackson to close out the season.

With starting strong safety Kareem Jackson suspended, the Denver Broncos plan to start first-year defensive back Trey Marshall across from free safety Justin Simmons in the final two games of the season, coach Vic Fangio said Wednesday.

“We haven’t seen Trey play a lot of defense since preseason, but he gets reps in practice and we’re confident he can go out there and do his job,” Fangio said.

Marshall has played primarily on special teams this season but he has gotten some rotational reps on defense and has totaled nine tackles.

There had been some speculation that Will Parks might fill in for Jackson but Denver plans to keep Parks at nickelback. Parks has been playing through a hand injury and still performing well.

“He’s overall giving us good play for the most part and he’s playing with an injured hand where he has to wear a cast,” Fangio said. “That hinders him somewhat, but overall he’s done a good job.”

With Marshall at safety and Parks at nickelback, cornerback Duke Dawson will be called on in dime situations to serve as a sixth defensive back.

Prediction

Texans 30, Buccaneers 24

Moneyline (?)

This could be a close game, but likely not enough to take the money-making wager of the Bucs at +140. Be smart and go with the TEXANS -167, even though a $10 bet will only win $5.99 in profit.

Against the Spread (?)

The Texans are 3-point favorites on the road. Houston has split its games 7-7 in covering the spread this season, while the Bucs have only covered the spread in five games this season. Both teams can score and both teams struggle to stop the passing game.

Ultimately, the Bucs are too volatile to bet on ATS. Lay the points and take the TEXANS -3 (-125).

Over/Under (?)

The total is set at 49 points. This seems like a no-brainer. Bucs games have gone over the point total 11 times this season and 11 of the last 12 games. Tampa’s defense is atrocious and its offense is hot. The OVER 49 (-125).

Outside of the NFC East, the NFC’s playoff teams are set. The Rams could make the playoffs but it would take a miracle. The Rams would have to beat the Niners — in San Francisco — and Cardinals and the Vikings would have to lose out. The Vikings have two home games. It’s doubtful they are going to lose out. That’s why the Rams aren’t on the list. Let’s check out the other races.

NFC East

Philadelphia Eagles 7-7

Remaining Games: Cowboys, @Giants

Dallas Cowboys 7-7

Remaining Games: @Eagles, Redskins

One write up for both teams. The NFC East crown is on the line in Week 16. It’s that simple. The winner of this matchup will win the division because there’s no way either team should — or would — lose to the Giants or Redskins. Yes, Dallas can make it into the playoffs if they lose to the Eagles but the Eagles lose to the Cowboys due to division record. Let’s just call this what it is, the game for the NFC East title.

AFC Playoff Picture heading into Week 16

The AFC playoff race comes down to which teams will win the wildcard between the Bills, Steelers, and Titans.

We are changing it up a little bit. There are seven teams left in the AFC playoff race and there are six spots, but all of the divisions are — essentially — over with. That means the only race left is for the two wildcard spots.  Let’s just get right to it.

AFC East

New England Patriots 11-3

The divisions are essentially done but the Bills and Patriots could finish with a 12-4 record if the Bills win out and the Patriots lose to the Bills and beat the Dolphins. It’s over because if that happens, the Bills can’t win the AFC East due to the common opponents’ tiebreaker. The only way the Patriots can lose the AFC east is by the Bills winning out and the Patriots losing out. That’s tough to picture happening.

Remaining Schedule: Bills, Dolphins

Pete Carroll is confident Bobby Wagner will play Sunday

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is optimistic that linebacker Bobby Wagner will suit up on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Seattle Seahawks lost two defensive starters, Bobby Wagner and Quandre Diggs, to sprained ankles during last Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers.

The good news is that coach Pete Carroll feels confident that Wagner, who was just named to his sixth Pro Bowl, will be able to suit up on Sunday against the Cardinals.

“He would probably be probable/questionable at this time if we had to label it,” Carroll said on Wednesday. “We don’t know. He wanted me to make sure and not be optimistic. I said I can’t do that, you’re gonna play, I know you’re gonna play.”

Carroll smiled. “I hope that really confused you.”

Wagner reiterated Carroll’s probable/questionable designation in his own press conference on Wednesday.

“Physically and mentally I’m amazing,” Wagner said when asked how he feels. “I’m probable-slash-questionable, so we’ll see.”

While Carroll did indicate that Wagner won’t participate in Wednesday’s practice, that is probably a precautionary move more than anything.

The Seahawks will hope to have the majority of their defensive starters back in action when they face the Cardinals at home on Sunday, in their second to last home contest of the season.

Broncos injuries: 5 players did not practice Wednesday

The Broncos held out five injured players from practice Wednesday.

Five Broncos players — guard Ron Leary (concussion), defensive end DeMarcus Walker (ankle), offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James (knee), defensive end Adam Gotsis (knee) and guard Dalton Risner (illness) — were held out of practice Wednesday.

Leary and James were both inactive last week and coach Vic Fangio indicated before practice Wednesday that they might be held out again on Sunday.

“Ron is still having difficulties with his concussion, so I don’t think it looks good right now,” Fangio said. “Ja’Wuan probably won’t play either.”

Elsewhere on Denver’s injury report, linebacker Joe Jones (back), defensive end Dre’Mont Jones (ankle) and tight end Noah Fant (shoulder) were listed as limited.

For the Lions, linebacker Devon Kennard (hamstring) and defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson (shoulder) were held out of practice. Linebacker Christian Jones (shoulder), running back Bo Scarbrough (ribs) and offensive tackle Rick Wagner (knee) were limited.

Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday. David Blough is expected to start against the Broncos in Week 16 with Kyle Sloter serving as his backup.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:05 p.m. MT and will air on CBS.

Raiders will be without two key players vs. Chargers

Two key players from the Oakland Raiders will be out for this weekend’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Oakland Raiders will be without two key pieces to their offense when they travel to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16 of the 2019 regular season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, running back Josh Jacobs will not play this weekend, as he’s currently dealing with a shoulder injury. Offensive tackle Trent Brown’s season has come to an end as he was placed on the injured reserve.

Jacobs, who is contention for Offensive Rookie of the Year, has been dealing with the injury since Week 7. When he played the Chargers in Week 10, Jacobs amassed 101 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, including the winning score with over a minute remaining.

The former Alabama product has rushed for 1,150 yards this season with seven touchdowns.

Prior to being placed on the IR due to a pectoral injury, Brown missed the past two contests. Brown, who was named to his first Pro Bowl on Tuesday night, has helped Oakland’s offensive line rank among the league’s best this season.

Defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney, Ziggy Ansah uncertain for Sunday

The Seattle Seahawks could be down a couple of defenders against the Cardinals if Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are unable to play.

The Seattle Seahawks could be down a couple of defensive ends Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals if Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are unable to return from injuries. Both players were inactive Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers.

Clowney has been battling a sports hernia (core) issue over the last few weeks of the season. Opting not to undergo surgery at this point, he’s been pushing through the pain. But last week, Clowney was also sidelined by the flu, unable to even travel with the team.

As for Ansah, he’s still been fighting a neck injury.

Coach Pete Caroll did say both defenders would get some practice in starting Wednesday, however.

“I can’t tell you, that I don’t know,” Carroll responded when asked if Clowney and Ansah would be ready to suit up Week 16. “We’ve got to get through the week and see what happens. They are both going to get work today and we’ll just see how we progress and see if it’s right for those guys to play.

“I’m hoping – we’d love to get get them both back, but I can’t tell you right now.”

Ansah and Clowney have a number of days to prove they are ready to roll before the final injury report of the week comes out on Friday.
