Dez Bryant’s past in Dallas is ‘water under the bridge’ but he’s ‘looking forward to’ facing Cowboys

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Dez Bryant hopes to help Baltimore stay in the playoff hunt against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys.

In 2010, the Dallas Cowboys traded up one spot ahead of the Baltimore Ravens to select wide receiver Dez Bryant in the NFL draft. Now, in Week 13 of the 2020 NFL season, Bryant will be facing his former team as a member of the Ravens.

Baltimore signed Bryant to their practice squad on Oct. 27. after initially having him work out for the team during training camp and once again before inking a contract. It didn’t take long for Bryant to make a positive impression at practice and not much longer after that to make his way to the Ravens’ 53-man roster.

Bryant and the Ravens face off against a Cowboys team that is still in the playoff hunt despite having a 3-8 record, thanks to being in the terrible NFC East division. Baltimore is in the AFC playoff picture themselves, currently a game behind the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 7 and final seed. A win this week wouldn’t just help the Ravens, however; it would be the exclamation point on Bryant’s comeback story.

But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here and need to take it back to Bryant’s time with the Cowboys to get the full picture of why this game might mean so much to him.

Bryant became one of the league’s best wide receivers during his eight years in Dallas. The three-time Pro Bowler and 2014 First-Team All-Pro Bryant played in 113 games, catching 531 passes for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdown receptions with the Cowboys. But despite his production, Dallas released Bryant in April 2018 when he still had two years remaining on his contract.

While Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones put out a heartfelt statement following Bryant’s release, the love didn’t go both ways initially. Bryant accused then-coach Jason Garrett’s staff and favorite players of pushing him off the team. Though Bryant wouldn’t say specifically which people were “Garret guys,” he was upset at the group for not being named a team captain near the end of his tenure.

With a few years and Bryant admitting he’s matured, those feelings have softened though.

“For the most part it’s water under the bridge,” Bryant said to reporters during a Zoom call Saturday. “That’s two years I had to get myself together.”

Bryant’s comeback to the NFL has been one of the more interesting and inspiring storylines during a very difficult and confusing 2020 season. After signing with the New Orleans Saints in 2018, Bryant suffered a torn Achilles before his first game. The injury not only ended his venture in New Orleans but put him out of football through the 2019 season too. By the time 2020 rolled around, most people thought Bryant’s playing days were behind him. Bryant himself seemed to think the same thing, but it was his daughter’s questioning made him give it another shot in earnest.

“My daughter kept asking me if I was going to play football and I just ignored the question,” Bryant continued Saturday. “I was like, ‘You know what, baby? I’m going to give it a go.'”

Bryant has been active for three games with the Ravens this season, catching four passes for 28 yards. While fans have been wanting Bryant’s role on offense to increase — especially with the lackluster production from others — he’s just doing what he can to be prepared for when his number is eventually called.

“Whatever the coaches have for me, I’m going to be prepared for,” Bryant said. “I’m going to let the coaches do what they feel is best, and I’m just going to follow their lead.”

Where Bryant hasn’t been much of a factor for an ailing Baltimore offense so far, this week against his former team might just finally be the game it all comes together for the 32-year-old wide receiver. At the least, offensive coordinator Greg Roman seems to think this game might mean a little more to Bryant.

“I’m sure there’s an extra glimmer this week for him,” Roman said Saturday. “There always is when you go up against one of your old teams – and in his case, his old team.”

Despite being released by his former team and the harsh words he had for them at the time, Bryant and Jones are like two peas in a pod and there’s some legitimate respect to be found.

“One thing about Mr. Jerry Jones is he’s very passionate and I am very passionate,” Bryant said. “The one thing I’ll always have for Mr. Jones is respect. I’m thankful that he drafted me and gave me the opportunity to play for his franchise.”

Bryant will take the field on Tuesday standing across from defenders that wear the jersey he once wore for eight seasons. With Tuesday’s game possibly being a must-win for the Ravens to stay in the playoff hunt, we may see Bryant throw up his first “X” in the end zone this season.

“I’m a Texas boy so I grew up a Cowboys fan,” Bryant said. “I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven. I’m looking forward to going up those guys on Tuesday.”

On the Atlanta Falcons’ Friday injury report, RB Todd Gurley and WR Julio Jones were listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

The Falcons got some good news on their game-day inactives list, though, as both Gurley and Jones are active for today’s NFC South matchup. Here’s the full list, as shared by the team’s Twitter account below.

Detroit Lions Week 13 inactives: D’Andre Swift is INACTIVE

Identifying the inactive list for the Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears game in Week 13 of the 2020 season.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 13, matchup with the Chicago Bears.

The Lions elected to elevate rookie safety Bobby Price from the practice squad this week, meaning they enter today’s game with 54-players on their roster. Additionally, because they have kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster from 46- to 48-players, meaning they need to declare six players inactive.

Here are those six players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • DL Da’Shawn Hand (groin) — Ruled OUT
  • CB Jeff Okudah (shoulder) — Ruled OUT
  • RB D’Andre Swift (illness)
  • EDGE Austin Bryant (thigh)
  • QB David Blough

With Golladay out and Marvin Hall released on Saturday, the Lions will like be turning to rookie Quintez Cephus to start at the WR-X position.

Hand being ruled out makes Nick Williams the clear starter next to rookie John Penisini, while recently signed Frank Herron and Kevin Strong will round out the interior defensive line.

No Okudah means the Lions will enter today’s game with just four corners: Amani Oruwariye and Justin Coleman will start, while Darryl Roberts and Mike Ford – who are now both healthy — will compete for the third and fourth roles.

Swift missed the last two games with a concussion, but cleared the league’s protocols, only to see an illness take him out of this week. Adrian Peterson will likely get the start, while Kerryon Johnson will lead the way in snaps.

Bryant was close to returning from his thigh injury that kept him out the last two weeks, but he is still not ready. His absence means the Lions may turn to Christian Jones and/or Jahlani Tavai to get them more help on the edge.

With Stafford’s thumb not bothering him noticeably, and Chase Daniel healthy, the Lions did not need to keep Blough active on the roster this week.

Lions Week 13 Rookie report: Late-round picks move into starting lineup

With injuries and opportunities rising, the Detroit Lions are leaning on late-round rookies Quintez Cephus and John Penisini to start.

The Detroit Lions are headed to Soldier Field short-handed to play the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

This marks the first game without coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn running the team and interim head coach Darell Bevell has a tough assignment ahead of him, as injuries plague the roster and the Lions sit with a losing record.

So how will all of this impact Detroit’s 2020 rookie class? Here’s what to expect from the rookies:

CB Jeff Okudah

The third-overall pick in 2020 has been ruled out once again this week as he deals with a lingering shoulder injury. Expect veteran Darryl Roberts to take his place as the second outside cornerback alongside Amani Oruwariye, with Justin Coleman primarily in the slot.

RB D’Andre Swift

The Lions’ star running back has had his rookie season hindered by injuries. Over the last two weeks, he has sat out of multiple practices due to a concussion (when has cleared) and illness. His official status for this game is ‘doubtful’ so don’t expect Swift to see the field in Chicago.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Overall, the Lions’ offensive line has been a bright spot on an otherwise struggling team.

Jackson will continue to start for Detroit at left guard. So far, the rookie out of Ohio State has committed just two penalties and allowed four sacks while playing as both right and left guard. Jackson may catch a break this week as several of Chicago’s starting defensive linemen have been sidelined from practices with various injuries.

Stenberg is on the back end of the Lions’ offensive line depth chart. He may be active this week due to the number of injured players on the active roster, but don’t expect the rookie to see the field.

WR Quintez Cephus

Cephus could be primed for a much bigger role this week following the release of wide receiver Marvin Hall.

While the rookie has seen more work in the slot, he should now take over as Detroit’s third or fourth receiver and could be used in the deep-threat role that Hall had before his release.

The rookie has 12 receptions for 174 yards on the season but has yet to find the endzone. With Kenny Golladay out and Marvin Hall no longer on the roster, Cephus could end up being the number two guy in Detroit behind Marvin Jones.

Expect a handful of receptions and a score from the rookie receiver against the Chicago Bears.

DL John Penisini

His role has already been increasing from week-to-week, and starting nose tackle Danny Shelton going to the injured reserve, Penisini will now assume the starting role for Detroit’s defensive line.

The rookie nose tackle has outperformed his draft position and shown versatility as a run stuffer and someone who could provide pressure form the interior of the line.

Against a struggling Chicago offensive line, expect big things from this rookie.

TE Hunter Bryant

Bryant recently got brought back to the active roster after a stint on injured reserve. The much-talked-about undrafted rookie impressed enough during training camp to make the initial roster and now will see his first action as an NFL player.

His role will be limited as he sits behind T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James, but the rookie could still see the field in certain offensive situations and could make his first career reception against the Bears.

S Bobby Price

Another undrafted rookie who could make his debut as a pro against Chicago, Price was elevated from the practice squad for this game. While he could provide depth at the safety position, but he is more likely to see the field on special teams.

Robby Anderson wishes the Panthers were playing today

The Panthers have the day off, as they are one of the last two teams in the NFL with a bye this season (the Buccaneers are the other).

The Panthers have the day off, as they are one of the last two teams in the NFL with a bye this season (the Buccaneers are the other).

While a little rest and recuperation will no doubt help Carolina rebound from losing six of its last seven games, some players still wish they could be on the field. For example, wide receiver Robby Anderson tweeted this morning he wishes there was a game today.

Anderson was the second potential free agent target we wrote about this past offseason. He seemed like an excellent fit for several reasons and we expected good things from No. 11 coming in. Anderson has blown away even those high expectations, though. After 12 games, Anderson has caught 75 passes, totaling 912 yards – the ninth most in the league. (D.J. Moore ranks seventh with 924).

The most impressive thing is how Anderson has done it. With the Jets, he was a potent vertical threat, but with the Panthers he’s done some of his best work in the short and intermediate parts of the field. 404 of his yards have come after the catch – already more than his last two seasons in New York. Anderson’s catch rate has also gotten a bump. In 2019, he caught just 54.2% of his passes. This year, it’s up to 73.5%.

Having a better offensive coordinator and a more accurate quarterback has helped. Anderson’s game has taken a legitimate leap forward, though.

There’s still another season left on his contract and the Panthers have to take care of guys like Curtis Samuel and Taylor Moton first. However, Anderson should be in line for an extension.

Experts give slim edge to the Bears over the Lions in Week 13

The Detroit Lions face off against the Chicago Bears in hopes of breaking their losing streak, but experts believe the home team prevails

The Detroit Lions (4-7) are on the road this week, hoping to notch out their first win in the post-Matt Patricia era, facing off against their division rival, the Chicago Bears (5-6) in Week 13.

The Bears have come out victorious in the last five games against the Lions, and the most recent being the opening game of the 2020 season. In that game, the Bears scored 21 unanswered points in a comeback win and D’Andre Swift had his welcome to the NFL moment.

Most of the time, people could have an idea of what to anticipate for a particular game, but for the Lions this week, it is full of unknowns. Will the team rally behind Bevell? Will we see a different sense of offensive tempo? Will the defense bring more pressure? The list goes on and on, but for this reason, this makes for an interesting game because we are not sure what is going to happen.

With Mitchell Trubisky’s history against the Lions, that usually brings the Bears a lot of hope, but the unknown element creeps up again. Was his success more due to Patricia’s defensive style, or was he bringing a new level against the Lions? With Cory Undlin running the defense now, it will be interesting to see what he brings to contain the Lion killer.

With the Lions already cleaning house, the Bears on the cusp of it, and the sheer amount of unknowns, experts are almost evenly split this week, but according to NFL Pickwatch, 56-percent of the experts give a slight edge to the home team.

Division games are difficult to predict because of the extra effort players bring, but the number of changes to the Lions, combined with the Bears suffering from a five-game losing streak, makes this game a hard one to predict.

If the Lions can follow the key concepts laid out in this week’s Honolulu Blueprint, they can overcome the recent coaching changes and break this losing streak against the Bears.

Ravens’ Lamar Jackson expected to play vs Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have been preparing as if they’ll face Lamar Jackson when they take on the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday night. That appears to be the reality as the reigning MVP seems good to go for Week 13 following being placed on the COVID-19 list and missing his team’s Week 12 loss to the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed the reports on NFL GameDay Sunday morning.

The Cowboys (3-8) and Ravens (6-5) were supposed to play this past Thursday night, but the game was postponed in the wake of the Ravens and Steelers matchup being delayed almost an entire week due to a rampant outbreak of COVID-19 positive tests with the Ravens. That game was supposed to follow Dallas and Washington on Thanksgiving, but was pushed all the way to Wednesday night as the Ravens kept having new positive tests.

Now the teams will square off on Tuesday night after initially being delayed to Monday afternoon. The NFL gave that 4:00 p.m. Central slot to Washington and Pittsburgh.

The news means that former Cowboys’ star Dez Bryant will have a legitimate chance to score against his former team with Jackson at the helm.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa expected to start in Week 13

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa expected to start in Week 13

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who watched the Miami Dolphins’ weekend unfold, but the report this morning from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is that rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return to the starting lineup this afternoon against the 2-8-1 Cincinnati Bengals.

Rapoport’s report came through in the early morning hours after plenty of speculation ran rampant this week about who would be taking the snaps for the Dolphins against the Bengals.

But again, if you watched how the weekend unfolded, the clues were here that this decision was set to be made. Tagovailoa was limited all week in practice, yes. Brian Flores stayed mum on the situation all week long, yes. But Brian Flores also told everyone after the Jets game in Week 12 that a healthy Tagovailoa is the starter for the Dolphins. And then the Dolphins elected not to promote practice squad quarterback Reid Sinnett to the active roster this weekend, indicating that Miami’s two game day quarterbacks would be Tagovailoa and Fitzpatrick.

And if there’s only those two and Tagovailoa is healthy enough to play, he would start — because Brian Flores told us when he was healthy and ready to go that he would.

And then there was the mess yesterday with Tagovailoa’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, who posted that he was flying to Miami to see “Tua play the Bengals” before rapidly editing his post to suggest he was actually flying to watch the Dolphins, not just his only client on the team.

The Dolphins may have held this one close to the vest, but every bit of information that has come out since Friday afternoon has indicated that Tagovailoa would be ‘the guy’ in Week 13. Now let’s see if he can get his swagger back after getting knocked around the last time we saw him — in Week 11 versus the Denver Broncos.
