Three Ohio State players named as Walter Camp All-Americans

A well deserved honor! #GoBucks

By most accounts, Ohio State had a very successful football season. Yes, there is still a bad taste left from another heartbreaking loss to Michigan, and fans will have a hard time getting over it, but an 11-1 regular season is nothing to be ashamed of.

As post-season awards are starting to be handed out, there are a slew of All-American awards given out by various outlets. Most recently, the Walter Camp group released its list, naming three Buckeyes for the honor.

According to the official Walter Camp website, Walter Camp was the father of American Football. The site goes on to say,  “The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.”

Let’s take a look at the three players from Ohio State to be named to the 2023 Walter Camp All-American Team.

Allen named to Walter Camp preseason team

Entering his third season with the Badgers, Braelon Allen was named as a Walter Camp Preseason 2nd Team All-American on Friday.

Braelon Allen was named as a Walter Camp Preseason 2nd Team All-American on Friday. The star running back is entering his third season with the Badgers and is expected to be one of the best at his position in the country.

Allen bust onto the scene during the 2021-2022 season, rushing for 1,268 yards and 12 touchdowns. He followed that up with another strong season this past season, compiling 1,242 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.

With Luke Fickell and Phil Longo now taking over at head coach and offensive coordinator respectively, the running game is expected to be opened up a little more in 2023. Allen faced a lot of stacked defensive fronts last season, something that could be fixed with the implementation of Longo’s “Air Raid” offense.

Florida offensive lineman named a Walter Camp First-Team All-American

Florida Gators offensive lineman O’Cyrus Torrence has been named a Walter Camp First-Team All-American, earning a brick outside The Swamp in his honor.

Florida Gators offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] has been named a Walter Camp First-Team All-American for the 2022 season. He will have a brick laid in front of the Bull Gators statue at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in honor of his selection.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 347-pound senior was a vital part of the Florida run game. He transferred to Florida from Louisiana, joining [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] in the move from Lafayette to Gainesville. He brought stability and familiarity in a run game that became the Gators’ offensive identity.

The offensive line was a position of need before Napier was hired and brought Torrence with him to the SEC. Once Torrence was brought in, the unit flourished. They finished the season No. 1 in SEC yards per carry (5.8), and second in the SEC in sacks allowed (12) and tackles for loss allowed per game (4). Torrence was also named to the First-Team All-SEC team for his role in one of the best offensive lines in the conference.

Unfortunately for the Gators, Torrence will be unavailable for the upcoming bowl game. In fact, the Gators will finish their season with a depleted roster after over a dozen players have entered the transfer portal.

Other top players like [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] and [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] have also declared for the NFL draft and will not be playing against the Oregon State Beavers in the Las Vegas Bowl. That game will be played on Dec. 17 starting at 2:30 p.m. EST and broadcast on ESPN.

Although no current Wisconsin Badgers were named as Walter Camp Preseason All-Americans, former Wisconsin kick returner and wide receiver Aron Cruickshank was named to the second team as a kick returner.

Cruickshank transferred to Rutgers after the end of the 2019 season and had an outstanding first season with the Scarlet Knights. In his first season at Rutgers, he had 671 return yards and two kick return touchdowns in addition to his contribution on offense of 239 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.

It is always great to see former Badgers doing so well, and it will be exciting to see how Cruickshank develops in his second season with the Scarlet Knights.

Wisconsin T Cole Van Lanen named to Reese’s Senior Bowl 250 player watchlist

At the end of every season, the Reese’s Senior Bowl provides a way for senior college football players to showcase their talent for NFL scouts and head coaches against other elite college competition before the NFL Combine.

Wisconsin offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen made this year’s watchlist for the prestigious game after having two phenomenal years as the left tackle for the Badgers.

Van Lanen has seen his draft stock rise this offseason even with the postponement of Big Ten football as he has been named a Walter Camp Preseason First Team All American, as well as has been named to the watchlist for the Outland Trophy that goes to the best interior lineman in college football.

Expectations were extremely high this season for the Green Bay, Wisc. native, but the postponement of the season until the spring likely means the end of Van Lanen’s college career at Wisconsin. Van Lanen currently has a second-round draft prediction by Pro Football Focus, and it will be interesting to see how opting out of the spring season could impact his draft stock.

Van Lanen has shown in his time at Wisconsin that he is an elite offensive tackle in college football and his naming to the watchlist for the Reese’s Senior Bowl means that NFL scouts and analysts believe that he will be successful at the next level.

It is something to note that Eric Burrell another senior on the roster, who has been named two watchlists for the top defensive back and defensive player in the country, was not included in this watchlist.

Wisconsin T Cole Van Lanen named to Outland Trophy Watch List

Tuesday afternoon, Cole Van Lanen was named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy that goes to the best interior offensive lineman in college football, adding to the preseason accolades that he has already received.

Going into his third season as a starter for Wisconsin, Cole Van Lanen has become the anchor of the Badger’s offensive line. Van Lanen has played well the last few seasons, but with Tyler Biadasz heading to the Dallas Cowboys, his time to be the next elite Wisconsin offensive lineman has arrived.

In his first year as a starter, Van Lanen played extremely well and was the highest-rated offensive tackle and run blocker by Pro Football Focus. The Green Bay, Wisc. native’s performance was impacted last season with injuries, but going into this season Van Lanen was named a Walter Camp Preseason First Team All-American.

The addition of his name to the watch list for the Outland Trophy has continued the increase in expectations for Van Lanen this upcoming season, but if he can have a good and healthy year, Van Lanen will be a day one prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft.

I have recently written an opinion piece about Cole Van Lanen and his disclusion from the PFF positional rankings for the 2021 NFL Draft, as well as discussed his Wisconsin career more in-depth here.
