Boston College is also just 1-5 ATS overall, scoring 14 or fewer points on 3 occasions. This is a poor team, and it is coming off a 31-3 loss at home to Clemson 2 weeks ago.

The Demon Deacons can already attain bowl eligibility with a victory, but Wake Forest obviously has much higher aspirations. The Deacs have a 51-45 overtime loss to Clemson on Sept. 24 as their only blemish and are 5-1 ATS overall.

Wake Forest (-1800) will cost you 18 times your potential return. And while it’s hard to envision a toothless Boston College offense cobbling together enough yardage and points to threaten the Deacs, you still can risk this much for such a little reward.

AVOID.

Against the spread

WAKE FOREST -20.5 (-108) is a great play, especially since this game is at home. The Deacs have rolled up 41.2 PPG to rank 14th in the nation, and their defensive numbers are sufficient. Wake Forest will be more than able to handle B.C. The Eagles are yielding 29.0 PPG (84th), and will offer very little resistance against QB Sam Hartman and company.

Over/Under

OVER 60.5 (-108) is worth a look, although play it lightly.

The concern here is not Wake Forest, as it should be able to put up plenty of offense. The concern is whether or not Boston College can contribute to the total. BC managed just a field goal against Clemson, and it was blown out 44-14 at Florida State and 27-10 at Virginia Tech earlier in the season.

Wake Forest’s offense is on par with Clemson’s, as we saw in that tremendous OT loss. It will score points, but we need BC to at least get to double digits to have this inch across the finish line. The better bet is laying the points.

Army is coming off a 31-14 home loss to Georgia State last Saturday. For a team many had pegged to go over their 8.5 season win total, the 1-3 record is disappointing. If Army coach Jeff Monken is truly up for the Georgia Tech position in Atlanta, the cadets of West Point might just let him go there in hopes both parties can be rejuvenated.

For coach Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons, last week’s 31-24 upset victory at then-No. 22 Florida State was the perfect way to come back from a heartbreaking 51-45 loss to Clemson in double overtime the prior week.

If last season’s Army-Wake Forest matchup is any indication of how this game will play out, expect a lot of points. The Demon Deacons claimed a 70-56 road victory last October – in regulation; there were no overtimes. They eclipsed the Over/Under line of 54 by 72 points.

Army, despite playing the option can score quickly, especially against a defense in Wake Forest which is near the bottom of the ACC.

If they can keep it clean and force the Seminoles to commit penalties, there is no telling what could happen on the road for them.

Wake Forest (-475) will cost you nearly 5 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for such little reward. The return of Hartman is nice, and Vanderbilt (+360) should offer little resistance, but the ‘Dores are still playing on their home field.

Against the spread

WAKE FOREST -12.5 (-112) is a strong play laying the points, even if Hartman is eased into action. The Demon Deacons won the Atlantic Division with Hartman under center, and they’re just an offensive machine when he is healthy.

Vanderbilt +12.5 (-108) has been a feel-good story through the first 2 games, as coach Clark Lea has this program headed in the right direction. The Commodores have already equaled its win total from a season ago. Still, it isn’t quite on the same level as a Top 25 team such as Wake, and this will be a hard lesson on how far it still has to go.

Over/Under

UNDER 65.5 (-105) is worth playing lightly, although it’s always a dangerous proposition in Wake games.

The Over is 7-3 in the last 10 games for the Deacons on the road. However, the Under is 4-1 in the last 5 non-conference tilts, and 5-0 in the previous 5 outings in the month of September.

Money line

Wake Forest (-5000) is the heavy favorite here, but there is no value betting a money line like this. You might win one, you might win several. But eventually betting huge favorites like this will come back to bite you hard, and you’ll be in the red despite a winning record.

AVOID.

Against the spread

VMI +32.5 (-107) is worth a play. Yes, the Keydets were trounced at Kent State last season, and were barely a .500 team in SoCon play in 2021. However, I’m not entirely sold on Wake Forest being the same team it was a year ago without Hartman under center.

Over/Under

UNDER 68.5 (-107) is the play here.

Again, if Hartman was in the lineup, I think Wake would have an outside chance of taking care of this Over all on its own. But it might take Griffis and the Deacs offense a little time to jell, and Over bettors will be playing catch-up all night. Plus, VMI just doesn’t have the horses to do much.

Duke had a five-game win streak snapped in a 76-74 home loss to the Miami Hurricanes Saturday.

The Blue Devils were undone by a season-high 17 turnovers. Duke also got to the line just 17 times against the Hurricanes, The Devils had averaged 23.5 free-throw attempts per game over their previous eight contests.

The Demon Deacons are coming off a 77-74 overtime win over Syracuse. Wake Forest has won two straight games after losing two in a row Dec. 29 to Jan. 1.

The veteran Deacons have enough big bodies inside to limit the second-chance points for the Devils.

They were blanked at Penn State 28-0, and lost 40-16 at home to Maryland in the season finale. So, the Scarlet Knights limp into this game with little momentum.

Against the spread

While WAKE FOREST -16.5 (-115) will be without WR Jaquarii Roberson, as he elected to opt out before entering the 2022 NFL Draft, the Demon Deacons have plenty of offensive weapons to make life miserable for the Scarlet Knights.

Wake has covered in each of the past four games as a favorite, while going 8-3-1 ATS in the past 12 games against teams with a losing record. Rutgers has a 7-1-1 ATS mark in the past nine bowl games, but it’s not happening here.

Over/Under

The ACC’s second-leading offense in terms of total yards (512.9 per game) is led by Heisman-hopeful QB Kenny Pickett, who has completed 67.7% of his passes while piling up 40 touchdown tosses.

Atlantic Division champ Wake Forest is 2-2 in its last four games after starting the season 8-0. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 41-10 win at Boston College. Wake allowed just 182 yards in a contest that saw them hold a team to less than 40 points for the first time since Oct. 30. For the season, the Deacons rank 100th in FBS in total defense and 91st in scoring defense.

Money line

Pitt is the lean overall and trying to avoid a back-door cover in an Under environment is enticing. But the -175 tag is too steep: AVOID.

Against the spread

Wake Forest lost ACC games to North Carolina and Clemson. Pittsburgh topped the Tar Heels in overtime (after leading 23-7 at halftime and allowing a couple short-field scores in the second) and defeated Clemson by 10.

The Panthers defense is better at getting stops and creating havoc. The Pittsburgh run game is enough of a change of pace to get the Deacons off balance, and stopping the run is not a Wake specialty (their 209.9 yards allowed per game ranks 118th in the nation). The grass playing surface at Bank of America Stadium figures as a boon for Pitt as well. The Demon Deacons are 1-2 ATS on grass this year and 2-7 ATS on natural turf over the last three years. The Panthers are 8-3 ATS on grass this season.

BACK PITTSBURGH -3.5 (-110).

Over/Under

Analyzing the way these teams move the ball all over the property and then making comparisons to how they do so inside the opponent’s 30-yard line  creates some doubt on the Wake side and a bit more confidence in the Pitt defense.

The Deacons have a very good kicker and figure to get dragged into a couple red-zone threes.
