Five Cinderella candidates to bet on in men’s 2022 March Madness

Which teams are the best bets to be this year’s Cinderella team in the men’s NCAA tournament?

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament gets underway on Tuesday, March 15 with the first of the First Four games in Dayton, Ohio. As we look towards the bracket and making picks, it’s time to pinpoint some Cinderella candidates for this year’s dance.

Cinderella runs have long been one of the best things about the NCAA tournament, with teams like 1983’s NC State, 2006’s George Mason, 2011’s VCU, and 2018’s Loyola-Chicago sticking out in our minds. So which team in 2022 has the potential to do what Oral Roberts did in 2021?

Let’s take a look at some of the Cinderella candidates that could also potentially make you some money. All odds courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook.

Paolo Banchero called out UNC after Duke beat Miami in the ACC tournament but he won’t get his wish

Paolo picked the wrong team.

Paolo Banchero has every right in the world to be confident in himself and his team.

I mean, they’re the 7th ranked team in the nation which is pretty good. Plus, he’s a consensus top 4 NBA draft pick at this point with good reason. The kid is really, really, really good. So, of course, he’d have all the confidence in the world.

But it’s still pretty risky to call out your opponent before you’re even sure if you’re going to play them.

That’s what Banchero did after Duke’s ACC tournament semifinal win over Miami on Friday. Banchero was asked who he wanted to play in the finals between Virginia Tech and the University of North Carolina who were set to match up on the other side of the bracket.

So, of course, Banchero said UNC after they beat Duke on Coach K’s last game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Banchero wanted to play them again.

Unfortunately for Banchero, UNC isn’t coming. They lost 71-59 to Virginia Tech right after this.

Of course, Virginia Tech fans certainly weren’t happy about their team being overlooked here.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Mike Brey, Prentiss Hubb, Cormac Ryan speak after ACC Tournament loss

The Irish have a few things to say about their early exit.

Mike Brey will be hosting his Notre Dame team at his house for Selection Sunday. Unlike last year, the Irish will be waiting for their name to pop up barring a sudden change of heart by the selection committee. Should the unlikely unfortunate happen, their 87-80 ACC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Virginia Tech surely will be a contributing factor. However, that merely is a worst-case scenario, and virtually no college basketball expert is listing the Irish as a bubble team.

Brey addressed the media along with Prentiss Hubb and Cormac Ryan, the Irish players who had the best performances in the loss. Most of the conversation understandably revolved around what had just happened against the Hokies. There also was talk about how well the team gets along and what it has been able to accomplish so far this season. Here is some of what the Irish coach and players had to say:

Notre Dame one-and-done in ACC Tournament after loss to Virginia Tech

Not what the Irish had in mind.

Notre Dame hoped to get revenge for its loss to Virginia Tech earlier in the season. A double bye and the second seed in the ACC Tournament should have indicated that the Irish were ready for almost anything thrown their way. Instead, the Hokies doubled down on the fact that they own the Irish this season and won the quarterfinal meeting, 87-80. While the Irish are said not to be on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament, a win sure would have given them less reason to be nervous come Selection Sunday.

The Irish (22-10) never led in this game, nor did they ever tie it once the Hokies (21-12), a true bubble team, scored the first points of the contest en route to a great shooting night. They trailed by as much as 16 in the first half, making only nine field goals and having an assist-to-turnover ratio of four to 10. The second half went better on both ends, and they got the deficit down to four with 48 seconds left. However, the Hokies answered every Irish run, and the comeback effort was too little too late.

Keve Aluma led the Hokies with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Justyn Mutts had the best all-around game with 11 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Storm Murphy shot 5 of 7 from the field on a 16-point night, and Nahiem Allleyne matched that shooting line while scoring 12. Sean Padulla added 13 off the bench.

Prentiss Hubb led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting and paced the Irish with five assists. Cormac Ryan made all eight of his free throws in a 20-point game, and Nate Laszewski had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dane Goodwin, making his first appearance off the bench this season, scored 11.

Notre Dame can spoil Virginia Tech’s dance plans tonight

How many teams will the ACC ultimately get in the dance?

Welcome to March where college basketball takes over and filling out brackets becomes as normal as refilling your coffee.

Tonight’s Notre Dame-Virginia Tech matchup in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals presents a possible elimination game for the Hokies, not just for the ACC Tournament but for the NCAA Tournament.

Virginia Tech started the year just 10-10 but rallied to go 9-2 their last 11 and are now very much on the tournament bubble.  Just how close?

Thursday’s updated USA TODAY Sports projections have Virginia Tech out of the dance but listed as one of the “next four out”.  What that translates to is that the Hokies really need to win tonight and could certainly use a few other bubble teams to lose throughout the country.

Either way, Virginia Tech is firmly on the bubble right now and appears to need the win much more than Notre Dame in terms of making the NCAA Tournament.

The USA TODAY Sports projection also had Wake Forest missing the NCAA Tournament but listed them in their “first four out” after the Demon Deacons were upset by Boston College on Wednesday.  In total the projection had four ACC teams in the field, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Miami, but only the Blue Devils (2) had higher than a nine-seed.

Notre Dame and Virginia Tech tipoff from Brooklyn at 7 p.m. EST Thursday night.

Darius Maddox saved Virginia Tech’s season with an incredible buzzer-beater to top Clemson

March is here but not really here, you know?

Virginia Tech men’s basketball has seen better days. In the third year under Mike Young, the Hokies carved out a respectable overall 20-12 record, which is acceptable, admirable even. But such a record comes with caveats: They finished in a paltry seventh place in the ACC regular-season standings. I’m no bracketologist, but that’s probably not how you want to enter March.

Thanks (or no thanks?) to their regular year foibles, Virginia Tech entered the ACC Tournament on the outside looking in to March Madness. Any early defeat would mean the Hokies were all but certainly going to have a silent month.

That nightmare almost became a reality in the second round against Clemson (+5 favorites) on Wednesday night. Virginia Tech faced a 75-73 overtime deficit, and a little over six seconds to go the length of the court, or their season’s over. Welp. Hokie fans should start filing out to beat the traffic.

Not if Darius Maddox has anything to say.

A game-winning three right through the heart of fellow bubble Clemson, and a stoic stare down after practically screaming, “Yep, I did that.”

Here’s a couple of more angles of this sweet taste of the madness to come.

Virginia Tech survives to play No. 2 seeded Notre Dame on Thursday. Another tall order and another win they probably have to have. After Maddox’s heroics, you’d forgive them if they felt invincible.
