Saints add important depth, re-sign veteran CB Johnson Bademosi

The New Orleans Saints re-signed cornerback Johnson Bademosi, a veteran free agent who played six games for the Saints on special teams.

Deadlines spur action in the NFL, and the approach of this year’s draft prompted the New Orleans Saints to re-sign another one of their own veteran free agents. The team brought back cornerback Johnson Bademosi, who was active for six games in the 2019 season before going down with a foot injury in practice, which ended his year on injured reserve. He previously suited up for five different NFL teams, most prominently the Houston Texans.

Bademosi played often on special teams, and that’s where he should be expected to compete again in 2020. He figures to try out for a job as the team’s fourth or fifth cornerback along with teammates Patrick Robinson and Justin Hardee, and XFL pickup Deatrick Nichols, as well as any rookies the Saints bring in.

His return might be a little more important that it looks at first glance. The Saints outright canceled their offseason program this week, instructing players to work out on their own and take care of their families in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. That time away from the team benefits a roster loaded with experienced NFL players rather than a squad that must work to get a horde of rookies and free agent pickups up to speed. Bademosi’s pro experience should give him an edge once training camp rolls around.

Here’s how the cornerbacks depth chart shakes out with Bademosi’s addition. Keep in mind that safeties Malcolm Jenkins and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are also both expected to compete for snaps as the slot defender in nickel sets:

  1. Marshon Lattimore
  2. Janoris Jenkins
  3. P.J. Williams
  4. Patrick Robinson
  5. Justin Hardee
  6. Johnson Bademosi
  7. Deatrick Nichols

With Bademosi in the fold, the Saints now have 70 of their 90 roster spots filled. They’re quickly approaching maximum capacity, and might not be active players in undrafted free agency if more veterans return from last year’s team. In such an unusual offseason, that may not be a bad thing.

Seahawks agree to terms with left guard Mike Iupati

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran left guard Mike Iupati.

The Seattle Seahawks are keeping another one of their own after agreeing to terms with left guard Mike Iupati. The terms of the deal have yet to be announced but the contract is for just one year, according to a number of reports.

Iupati first signed with the Seahawks an undrafted free agent last spring. For Seattle in 2019, he started 15 of 16 regular-season games played before sitting out the playoffs due to a neck injury.

The Seahawks have been busy beefing up the offensive line this offseason, having signed center B.J. Finney, guard Chance Warmack and tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to the roster. As a result, center Justin Britt could easily result in a cap casualty, saving Seattle much-needed space.

Iupati will join a plethora of guards to compete to regain his starting position once facilities open back up and teams can resume offseason activities. For now, the voluntary virtual program is set to kick off on April 27.

WATCH: Report: ESPN expected to offer Tony Romo record contract in NFL offseason

Front Office Sports reports that ESPN will offer Tony Romo somewhere between $10 and $14 million annually as the worldwide leader sets out to improve its Monday Night Football on-air product.

Tony Romo is a national treasure in a TV booth. Now he is expected to get a record contract this upcoming offseason.

Front Office Sports reports that ESPN will offer the 39-year-old, 14-year Cowboys veteran somewhere between $10 and $14 million annually as the worldwide leader sets out to improve its Monday Night Football on-air product and as the network also potentially pursues a Sunday game package during upcoming negotiations between networks and the league.

The New York Post also reported last week that ESPN is expected to pursue Romo, whose contract with CBS expires at the end of this season.

CBS gave Romo its lead color analyst role in 2017 after he retired from playing football. Alongside Jim Nantz, Romo shows his ability to predict game scenarios and plays as he flawlessly reads defenses from the booth.

While Romo immediately got top billing on CBS when beginning his full-time broadcasting career, his current contract is reportedly paying him about $4 million annually, so the numbers that ESPN’s supposed offer would give Romo a significant raise. The reported numbers would also make the former QB the highest paid network analyst in history.

There doesn’t seem to be any sign that things with CBS aren’t working out, though, and the Front Office Sports report explains that Romo’s current employer will have the opportunity to match any competing offers.
