Vanessa Bryant and family were among those out to support USC women’s basketball in March Madness

The Bryants were out to support JuJu Watkins and USC women’s basketball on Saturday.

During the USC women’s basketball team’s opening-round NCAA tournament game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, sensational Trojans guard JuJu Watkins and her teammates had quite the cheering section.

Vanessa Bryant, wife of the late Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, attended Saturday’s game with her family to root for Watkins and the Trojans, an awesome gesture that shows the connection between the L.A.-based school and the Bryants.

In the past, Watkins has talked about the late Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s influence on her USC playing days and the way she approaches basketball. So it’s great to see the Bryant family supporting her and her team in one of the big games of their careers.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams, the likely top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and women’s basketball legend Cheryl Miller were also in attendance for the day’s game.

This is just a really cool thing to see, as it’s clear the love in basketball family in Los Angeles can spread levels of play and different programs.

We’re sure that Watkins and USC deeply appreciate the support from the Bryants as they try to bring a national title back to the City of Angels.

Vanessa Bryant had a hilarious quip about Kobe’s choice of statue pose during Lakers’ unveiling

A statue fit for Kobe Bryant, chosen by Kobe Bryant!

Kobe Bryant will forever be immortalized in gold and purple outside of the Los Angeles Lakers arena. And according to Vanessa Bryant, he did it his way.

On Thursday, the Lakers unveiled the first of three statues that will sit outside the team’s arena to celebrate the late basketball star. The first statue featured Kobe in his No. 8 Lakers uniform, recreating the pose he struck during his iconic 81-point game. The other two statues will feature Kobe in his No. 24 jersey and one with him and his late daughter Gianna.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Before the first statue was unveiled, Vanessa Bryant had quite the quip for possible haters of the statue’s pose, stating that Kobe himself picked it before he passed.

That’s classic Kobe for you!

Kobe Bryant’s legacy deserves so much better than what Nike is doing with it right now

Nike’s “Halo” Kobe 8 release was more of the same and that’s so disappointing

Most of you who are reading this right now are probably sneakerheads. And, if you are a sneakerhead, chances are you probably tried to purchase the Kobe 8 “Halo” drop on Nike’s SNKRS app today.

For those of you who aren’t in the know, don’t worry. I’ve got you.

Earlier this year, Nike announced that it’d be relaunching the “Kobe Brand” ahead of Bryant’s birthday, which is August 23rd. Nike chose to initiate this reboot with a retro version of one of Bryant’s most popular basketball sneakers.

The brand called it the “Halo” colorway. It’s an all-white sneaker created in partnership with Vanessa Bryant to honor Kobe’s birthday each year.

For so many people, these shoes mean so much. Not just those shoes linked above, but Bryant’s sneakers in general.

It’s just one of the few ways they still get to connect with their fallen idol that they so tragically and abruptly lost three years ago. That’s why it’s so frustrating to see how hard it still is to purchase these shoes. Since Bryant’s death, resellers have been scooping up the limited supply of Kobe shoes and charging top dollar for them. Unfortunately, that hasn’t changed with time. Three years ago, we talked about this being a problem. We did the same last year, too. Today, it’s the same thing. It’s so sad because it doesn’t have to be this way.

Nike limits these drops intentionally. Ahead of the release, Vanessa Bryant was candid about why the stock was short on this one.

“Nike wanted this debut Halo Collection to be limited and collectable [sic] but the good news is Nike is working towards more units for future Kobe releases! The “Kobe Halo” collection debuts on Kobe’s birthday tomorrow, collect all future Halo releases to celebrate this special day every year.”

The “Halo” drop is coming every year with different Kobe models. In her words, Nike wanted the sneakers to be “collectible.” That’s why they’re being kept limited.

But something about that just doesn’t feel right, does it?

As a sneakerhead myself, I’m well aware of what the game is. Collecting is certainly part of it all. That’s the thrill of it. There’s nothing like hunting down your favorite shoe and finally making it part of your collection.

But this is not just a sneaker. It’s something more meaningful than that to a lot of people out there. And, for years, those people have been playing this game of cat and mouse with Nike.

We chide the resellers for taking advantage of Kobe’s death and making a profit off of it, but isn’t Nike doing the same thing? The company has quite literally gamified Kobe’s legacy in the form of a sneaker. It dangles a carrot out in front of Bryant’s fans over and over again, knowing they’ll keep coming back and trying just for a chance to have a piece of Kobe to themselves. It feels so cruel.

There are a couple of solutions here. First, Nike can stop doing this. Kobe’s have been enough of a struggle for people. The brand doesn’t need to make it even more of one. I’d almost rather not see these drops happening at all than see people struggling with them the way they do.

Consumers can’t depend on Nike, though. So the real solution for regular folks out there is to simply stop trying.

Having a Kobe shoe would be nice. But having these sneakers won’t make you any more or less a fan of the Laker legend than you already were in the first place. This isn’t something you need. It’s only a want.

When you finally realize and accept that, the problem goes away.

LOOK: LSU women’s basketball receives gift from Vanessa Bryant ahead of Elite Eight

LSU received a gift of Kobe 6 Grinches prior to its Elite Eight showdown with Miami

In the middle of a deep postseason run, LSU’s women’s basketball team got some swag on behalf of Vanessa Bryant, the wife of the late Kobe Bryant.

In a video posted to the team’s Twitter account, the group unboxed Kobe 6 Grinches.

The gift comes as LSU prepares for an Elite 8 showdown with the Miami Hurricanes. LSU squeaked by Utah in the Sweet 16 to earn its first Elite Eight appearance since 2008.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] led LSU with 17 points and [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag] added 15. In what’s become par for the course for Reese, she grabbed 12 rebounds, giving her a double-double.

LSU’s region worked out favorably with No. 9 seed Miami the opponent in the Elite Eight.

BetMGM says LSU is a 9.5-point favorite with a -550 money line. But Miami is here for a reason and at this point in the tournament, nothing comes easy.

If LSU wins, it’ll face the winner of Virginia Tech and Ohio State in the Final Four.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Wednesday honored the legendary Kobe Bryant by praising a game statistic that usually would not be celebrated. To honor his friend on this year’s 8/24 (Bryant’s two NBA numbers), Abdul-Jabbar noted that others would likely focus on the obvious accolades and awards, but he wanted to highlight something different that Abdul-Jabbar found most impressive: “Kobe Bryant missed the most career field goals in NBA history. He missed 14,481 times.” Calling that stat “the foundation of his greatness as an athlete,” Abdul-Jabbar said what would otherwise be perceived as a negative flew in the face of what most athletes fear most: Losing. -via People / August 24, 2022

Vanessa Bryant deletes Instagram comment disputing DeMar DeRozan’s Nike deal

Bryant took offense that DeRozan was called ‘the face’ of Kobe’s signature line.

On Monday, it was reported that Bulls All-Star DeMar DeRozan had extended his contract with Nike on a new four-year deal.

The report first came from Shams Charania of The Athletic, who called DeRozan ‘the featured face of Kobe Bryant’s iconic line.’

Kobe’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, took issue to the statement in a since-deleted Instagram comment.

“False. He is not the face of the Kobe Line. No one is.”

DeRozan, who viewed Bryant as a mentor and hero, has not only patterned his game after the late legend, but exclusively wears his sneakers.

In a later comment on Instagram, Vanessa Bryant had more to say on the matter.

“LOVES that he’s a Kobe supporter but the caption is false. It’s misinformation. Only Kobe is the face of the line.”

[pickup_prop id=”26566″]

In February, Vanessa and Nike had agreed to part ways, ending Bryant’s legendary line, before the two sides agreed to continue the partnership a month later in March.

DeRozan has yet to make a public comment regarding the matter.

An emotional Klay Thompson had a very sweet message for Kobe Bryant’s family after winning ESPYs award

It just got a little dusty in here.

The ESPYs were held last night in Los Angeles and while there were a number of funny moments with Steph Curry as the host, there were also some emotional moments during the annual awards show.

One of those moments came from Klay Thompson after he won the Comeback Athlete of the Year award. The Golden State Warriors star guard spoke about his childhood in Los Angeles and all the times he got to watch Kobe Bryant in person.

He then told Kobe’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, that he and other NBA players think of Kobe and Gigi Bryant every day and that her late husband continues to be an inspiration to him.

This is really powerful:

Vanessa Bryant did see that sweet moment and thanked Klay on Instagram:

Yup, it just got a little dusty in here.

Twitter had reactions:
