Alabama basketball wins SEC opener against Vanderbilt 78-75

Crimson Tide start off SEC play with victory over Vandy

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but they all count the same as Alabama knocked off Vanderbilt in their SEC opener on Saturday by a score of 78-75. The Tide led for the final 34 minutes of the game but just couldn’t put away a frisky Commodores team in Nashville.

The Tide shot very well on the day at 49.1% from the field and 40% from three but were plagued offensively by turnovers with 16 on the afternoon. Mark Sears and Rylan Griffen were responsible for 37 of the starting five’s 49 points. Alabama is a lot better than their 9-5 record would indicate.

The season takes off fast as the 13-1 South Carolina Gamecocks come to Tuscaloosa on Tuesday for the Tide’s second SEC contest of the season. Then, the Tide will be in Starkville next Saturday for a showdown with the Bulldogs of Mississippi State.

Middle Tennessee State hires former SEC head coach

Middle Tennessee State football hires former SEC head coach.

Middle Tennessee State announced the hiring of Derek Mason as the Blue Raiders’ football head coach on Wednesday.

“We are ecstatic to welcome coach Derek Mason to Middle Tennessee and the Blue Raider football program,” Middle Tennessee State director of athletics Chris Massaro said. “With his experience as a head coach, his reputation for coaching fast, aggressive defenses, his strong reputation as a recruiter, and deep connections in college football to formulate an outstanding staff, coach Mason’s vision for MTSU football fits exactly what we were looking for during our interview process. Coach Mason is no stranger to the mid-state community and we expect his connections to allow him and his staff to hit the ground running as our 15th head football coach.”

Mason served as Vanderbilt’s head coach from 2014-20.

2023 Tennessee football senior day: Breakdown of who has remaining eligibility

2023 Tennessee football senior day: Breakdown of who has remaining eligibility

Tennessee football held its annual senior day on Saturday.

The Vols defeated Vanderbilt, 48-24, in a regular-season finale for both schools.

Prior to kickoff, 35 student-athletes for the Vols took part in a senior day ceremony.

“Senior day, we’re proud of this group,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said after the game. “A lot of them were here when I first got here and chose to stay here through some uncertainty. They bought into our vision of what the program can and would be about. It’s a phenomenal group.

“It’s a group that, over the last couple of years, won 13 games at home. Thirteen home games, which, over that span, is as good as it’s been since the late nineties. We’ve had some disappointment in the results along the way, but this group, this team, continues to fight and compete extremely hard and prepare the right way. I’m really proud of them. That happens because of the leadership from that senior group.”

12 Tennessee student-athletes who took part in senior day festivities have eligibility remaining.

Below are student-athletes with a Covid-19 year of eligibility remaining. Eligibility information is provided by the University of Tennessee.

Joe Milton recaps senior day performance versus Vanderbilt

Joe Milton recaps his senior day performance versus Vanderbilt.

Redshirt senior quarterback Joe Milton III played his final game for Tennessee at Neyland Stadium on Saturday.

Milton III completed 22-of-32 passing attempts for 383 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 11 yards and two touchdowns.

“You go out with a bang,” Milton III said. “Every game you try to do that and the most important one is the last one inside the stadium. You show a team that that’s how we play when we get inside this stadium. That’s the legacy that I am going to hold on to and leave it on to my guy Nico (Iamaleava).”

Milton III discussed his emotions of going through senior day.

“I got mine out Friday at my throwing session here before we played on Saturday,” he said. “Walking down the tunnel by myself Friday, I kind of started crying, but my coaches were in front of me so I had to show that I’m tough. Just playing inside this stadium one last time was amazing. I wish the guys that come up after us take it as seriously as us. We left a legacy here that there is only one way we play when we get inside that stadium and that’s hard. There’s only two things you can control and that’s your effort and your attitude, so once you get inside that stadium and you put those jerseys on I hope you have.”
