Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t score enough.

New Mexico is the only team in college football that scores fewer points than the Commodore attack that averages just over 15 points per game. When the Tennessee offense is humming, it seems like it can get that on one drive.

Even when Vandy’s attack is moving the ball – it did a nice job of balancing things out in last week’s 31-17 loss to Ole Miss – it’s not finishing things off with points.

There just aren’t enough third down conversions to keep things moving, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Tennessee doesn’t do much defensively to come up with third down stops.

Yeah, this has been a great first season for the Vols under head coach Josh Heupel, but the D is getting hit hard by everyone in the SEC.

Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky all did what you’d expect them to do, but Kentucky had the most fun of anyone this season with over 600 yards in in the 45-42 Vol win.

Again, Vanderbilt showed last week that it could move things along just a little bit. The Tennessee offensive line gives up too many sacks, the attack holds the ball for about 24 minutes a game, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like Vanderbilt has been close.

It punched its weight in losses to Missouri and Kentucky before getting by Ole Miss, it almost beat South Carolina, and last week’s Ole Miss game was at least competitive. Yeah …

Tennessee will score on its first two drives to get up fast, and it’ll coast from there.

SEC Power Rankings: Auburn, Florida meet in basement

Auburn and Florida greet each other in the basement of this week’s SEC Power Rankings.

The Auburn Tigers have fallen off of the face of the earth.

After asserting themselves as presumably the second-best team in the SEC West after beating Ole Miss, Auburn has now lost three straight games to Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and South Carolina, putting the Tigers at fifth in the SEC West. The sobering reality is that Auburn will most likely finish the regular season 6-6 after starting 6-2. A colossal meltdown from Auburn.

Florida, on the other hand, seems to have had enough of their meltdown, firing Dan Mullen after losing to Missouri in overtime. A pair of the conference’s most prestigious programs are going through droughts right now, and as an Auburn Tiger fan, I can’t do anything but sit in stunned disbelief.

Here are the SEC Power Rankings following week 11.

Ole Miss vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Start running, get running, and don’t believe that the Ole Miss defense really is all that great.

The Rebels were able to stuff Texas A&M last week, but Liberty and Auburn ran well as part of a run of five games in six with the opponents hitting the 200-yard mark.

Vanderbilt might not have a consistent ground game, but it was able to crank up the production against Missouri and has to at least give it a shot.

Run, keep the turnovers to a minimum, try to control the clock a bit and keep Matt Corral off the field, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Ole Miss offense could put this away immediately.

Vanderbilt ran well against Missouri, and that’s been about it for the rushing production in SEC play. The passing attack doesn’t have the firepower to keep up – it hasn’t hit 200 yards in four of the last five games – but the defense is every bit as bad.

The Commodore D isn’t getting any help from the O, and vice versa. The defense allowed over 400 yards in every game against FBS teams and should get hit for at least 500.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Vanderbilt will be plucky.

Ole Miss is a bit banged up, it’s coming off a big win over Texas A&M, and it has to play Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl a few days later. The dream will be to get this done in the first quarter, sit Corral and company as soon as possible, and get ready for the showdown.

The Commodores will score just enough to make Ole Miss try deep into the second half, and then the explosion will come.

Week 12 SEC Power Rankings: Auburn chokes, Ole Miss rises

Auburn falls big in the latest power rankings.

The SEC has become more and more confusing as the season has gone on.

Auburn choked in the most humiliating way possible, giving up a 28-3 lead to Mississippi State, losing 43-34. 33 Unanswered points from the Bulldogs.

Arkansas went on the road and could only muster a 16-13 win over LSU and their backup quarterback in overtime.

South Carolina had their winning streak snapped by Missouri, and Kentucky had their losing streak broken with a win over Vanderbilt, the team anyone wants to play to get some things going back in the right direction.

Here are the new SEC Power Rankings after week 11.

Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Vanderbilt scored last week and it still wasn’t enough.

This has been an offensively challenged team all year – it’s 128th out of 130 teams averaging just under 15 points per game – with no downfield passing game and not enough positive plays on third downs.

Kentucky is great at keeping things going – it’s strong on third downs – it usually makes teams play its style, and it has the ability to dominate the time of possession battle.

Vanderbilt won’t have the ball all that often, and it’s going to be pressed to take advantage of the opportunities when it does. That’s when the turnovers will come. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Kentucky has the right style to match up with Vanderbilt does.

The Wildcats tried to keep up in the firefight with Tennessee last week in the 45-42 loss, and they showed they had the offensive pop to do it. That’s not its style, though.

The goal is to keep this slow, slug it out in a controlled game without a ton of mistakes and with a big day on the ground, but UK doesn’t take the ball away and it’s a tad hit-or-miss with the rushing attack.

Vanderbilt will want and need to keep this in the 20s, and Kentucky will oblige.

What’s Going To Happen

The Commodores have had two weeks off to rest up, and they needed it after giving up well over 1,000 yards of total offense to Mississippi State and Missouri.

They’re not going to give up 500 yards to the Wildcats, but they’ll be run over for close to 200 yards as they have problems on too many third downs.

Kentucky has a whole slew of flaws, and it can be pushed by a good passing team. That’s not Vanderbilt.

This won’t get ugly, but every time it seems like the Commodores have a shot to get in the game, they won’t.

Week 11 SEC Power Rankings: A&M surpasses Bama, Florida plummets

Auburn fell in this week’s power rankings.

Yikes. There goes the “Auburn is a team of destiny” narrative.

The Tigers mustered up their worst offensive output since 2012 in a 20-3 loss on the road to Texas A&M. It was the first time Auburn has lost in College Station ever.

Let that snoozer of a ballgame not be overshadowed by the fact that Alabama only beat LSU by six points, and Florida lost 40-17 to South Carolina, who was playing an FCS transfer quarterback getting his first start.

Don’t let those two games overshadow the fact that No. 17 Mississippi State lost to Arkansas, and No. 18 Kentucky lost at home to Tennessee (to be honest, the Wildcats got hosed on a facemark penalty that wasn’t called).

There was a lot of shifting and moving in this week’s SEC Power Rankings. Here is where the teams stand heading into week 11.

SEC predictions for week 9: Ole Miss falls to Auburn

Can Auburn take down the 10th ranked Rebels?

Whelp. We’ve got limited SEC action this week.

It’s that time of the year when most teams are taking their byes and trying to regroup. This week holds particular interest for Auburn and Ole Miss fans, however, as the two teams face off in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The winner stays in SEC West contention.

I haven’t made public picks in the SEC since week seven, but I am currently 56-16 on the year (77.8%). The coveted 80% win rate is starting to slip away from my grasp. Here’s to a 4-0 weekend. Shouldn’t be very hard given the slate of games.

Here are my SEC predictions for week nine.

Missouri vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

Vanderbilt still isn’t big on that whole scoring thing.

It’s dead last in the nation in averaging just 13.2 points per outing whether it needs them or not.

The team is able to battle from time to time, but it has yet to score more than 20 points in any SEC game and scored six or fewer in three of the four.

Missouri has its issues, but it’s got the versatility to move the ball however it wants. It ran well against North Texas, it threw just fine against Tennessee and Boston College, and any sort of a scoring burst might be too much for this struggling Commodore attack to overcome.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Missouri still isn’t big on that whole defense thing.

The Tigers are dead last in the SEC in total defense, second-to-last in the nation against the run, and there are a whole lot of problems getting off the field – offenses are allowing teams to hit close to 50% of their third down chances.

No, Vanderbilt’s offense isn’t anything special, but it has to try running and keep hammering away no matter what – things will eventually open up.

The Tigers have allowed 275 yards or more on the ground in five of their last six games, with North Texas the only team that didn’t get there and bombed away for over 300 yards.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is one game that Vanderbilt has a real shot at winning in SEC play.

It’s at home, Missouri really, really doesn’t do anything on defense, and …

Nah. Mizzou has had two weeks off to rest up from the loss to Texas A&M, the offense should be able to get the passing attack going against the shaky Commodore pass D – it’s the worst in the SEC – and the defense will finally come up with just enough stops to get by.

Week 9 SEC Football Power Rankings

Here are the SEC power rankings heading into week nine.

Straight up, this was a pretty boring weekend in the SEC.

Throughout college football as well. We’ve been spoiled by the noon slates that have kicked off some fantastic afternoons of college football, and this week it felt like we stumbled out of the gate with some boring games throughout the country.

There were no upsets in the SEC, nor were there any ranked-on-ranked matchups. Surprising, I know.

There wasn’t much shakeup in the power rankings either, as a lot of teams have elected to take their byes over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Mississippi State vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t have enough offense.

It was able to stay close in a loss to South Carolina, and it came up with a win over UConn, but it’s struggling to get past 300 yards of total O and doesn’t have enough of a running game to worry about.

That’s part of the issue – can the Commodores deal with the short-to-midrange passing game? Not really.

They’re last in the SEC in pass defense, getting hit for an average of over 300 yards per game over the last four outings. Now they get to go against a Bulldog passing attack that might not hit anything big down the field, but has hit the 300-yard mark in every outing except the 294-yard day against NC State.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

No, really. Mississippi State doesn’t do a thing with its passing game down the field. It’s dead last in the nation in average yards per completion, averaging a mere 8.65 yards per pop.

There’s absolutely no running game – the Bulldogs are also last in the nation on the ground, averaging just 47 yards per game – so the Commodores have just one job. If they can tackle after the midrange throw, they’re fine.

Vandy might not be cranking up the offense, but it’s good at controlling the clock and it’s not bad at getting the defense off the field.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Bulldog QB Will Rogers is hurting with a shoulder injury, but he was able to get through the Alabama game. The Mississippi State passing game will go off no matter who’s under center – to a point.

It’ll hit 300 yards, but it’ll be the Bulldog defense that takes over by stuffing the Vanderbilt running game to around 100 yards, but turnovers will matter.

The Commodores have come up with eight takeaways in the last three games, and it’ll get two here to keep the game from getting out of hand. It won’t be enough to make up for the struggling O.
