March Madness: Vanderbilt vs. Saint Mary’s odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Vanderbilt vs. Saint Mary’s odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The 10th-seeded Vanderbilt Commodores (20-12) and No. 7 seed Saint Mary’s Gaels (28-5) tangle in an East Region first-round game of the NCAA Tournament. The opening tip at Rocket Arena in Cleveland is slated for 3:15 p.m. ET (truTV). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Vanderbilt vs. Saint Mary’s odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Vanderbilt was ousted by Texas (79-72 as a 2.5-point favorite March 12) in an early-round SEC Tournament game, but the Commodores made the NCAA Tournament field as an at-large. Albeit against tough foes, Vandy enters Friday’s tilt having lost 3 consecutive games straight up and against the spread (ATS).

Saint Mary’s fell to Gonzaga in the March 11 West Coast Conference Tournament title game (58-51 as a 3.5-point underdog). The Gaels, who were ranked No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll at the time, made the field as an at-large. SMC sports one of the top defenses in the nation. The Gaels’ loss to GU snapped an 8-game win streak; over that stretch, SMC yielded just 60.0 points per game.

Vanderbilt vs. Saint Mary’s picks and predictions

Prediction

Saint Mary’s 70, Vanderbilt 68

Moneyline

No interest: PASS.

Against the spread

Both sides enter on ATS losing streaks (Vandy has lost 3 straight ATS), but peg the Commodores as having a a terrific defense to match the Gaels. And the back half of Vanderbilt’s season appears more solid than its win-loss record suggests.

The Gaels have filed ATS losses in their last 4 NCAA Tournament games.

In a close game, Vandy’s free-throw shooting (74.7%) could well play a prominent role.

TAKE THE COMMODORES +4.5 (-115).

Over/Under

The Over is 4-1 across Vandy’s last 5 games.

The pace here figures to be a clash of slow (SMC) vs. fast (VU). When looking at the up-tempo fives that the Gaels met in WCC play (including Gonzaga in that league’s tournament finale), Overs have hit in 5 straight such matchups.

The OVER 135.5 (-110) is the value side of this contest.

PASS.

There is no value on the Gators (-800), who are 10-1 at home this season, to beat the Commodores.

Against the spread

LEAN FLORDIA -11.5 (-115).

Vanderbilt has struggled on the road this season, losing 3 consecutive games straight up and ATS away from home. It is just 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games overall, including 2-4 ATS as an underdog.

Florida is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 games overall and 5-1 ATS in its last 6 at home.

Kentucky at Vanderbilt odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Kentucky at Vanderbilt odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Vanderbilt Commodores (15-4, 3-3 SEC) welcome the No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats (14-4, 3-2) to Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville Saturday. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Kentucky, No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, is coming off a 102-97 home loss to the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday. The Wildcats were 2.5-point favorites and the Over (179) easily hit. The loss snapped a 2-game win and cover streak for Kentucky. The Wildcats are 4-2 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in their last 6. They are 9-8-1 ATS on the season.

The Commodores also faced the Crimson Tide in their last game, suffering a 103-87 road defeat Tuesday. They failed to cover as 11.5-point underdogs and the Over (168.5) cashed. The Commodores are 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games. They are 10-1 straight up at home this season. The Commodores are 12-7 ATS despite a 2-4 ATS record in conference play.

Kentucky at Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Kentucky 82, Vanderbilt 77

Moneyline

PASS.

Vanderbilt (+138) to win outright has some credence given its odds and the fact that it is 2-1 in SEC competition. But with how the game is expected to go, the moneyline is ultimately a PASS as Kentucky (-166) is too expensive to play to win outright.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread

BET KENTUCKY -3.5 (-115).

Simply put, the Wildcats have covered in conference play while the Commodores have struggled for bettors. Kentucky is 3-2 ATS in SEC action, while, as mentioned, Vanderbilt is 2-4 ATS in the conference.

The Wildcats are 3-2 ATS in their last 5 games as favorites as well. The Commodores are 1-3 ATS in their last 4 games as underdogs and have scored 66 points or fewer in 3 of their last 5.

Vandy likely won’t be able to keep pace with an electric Kentucky attack.

Considering these trends, BACK KENTUCKY -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 163.5 (-105).

If there’s one thing both sides can agree on, it is the Under. The Wildcats are 3-4 O/U in their last 7 and have traded off going Over and Under in their last 6 — after an Over in their last game, it’s time to go Under. Kentucky has scored 81 points or fewer in 2 of its last 4.

The Commodores are just 2-6 O/U in their last 8 and 8-10-1 O/U on the season. They have allowed 76 points or fewer in 7 of their last 8 while scoring 80 or fewer in 5 of those. Vanderbilt doesn’t have a player shooting over 39.0% from deep who at least is playing more than 2 minutes per game. Vandy may have issues racking up enough points to help have the Over hit.

TAKE UNDER 163.5 (-105).

Tennessee at Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 74, Vanderbilt 71

Moneyline

PASS.

There is minimal value on the Tennessee (-250) to win Saturday.

Against the spread

LEAN VANDERBILT +5.5 (-115).

The Commodores are 7-3 against the spread (ATS) over their last 10 games. They are 9-1 straight up (SU) at home this season while the Volunteers’ only loss came on the road this season. There is solid value on a Vanderbilt team that plays its best basketball at home.

Tennessee has failed to cover the spread in 6 of its last 10 games including 4 of its last 6. This has also swelled from +100 to -115 overnight.

Over/Under

BET OVER 140.5 (-115).

While Tennessee has hit the Under in 7 of its last 10 games, it has scored 74 or more points in 3 of its last 4 and 7 of its last 10. It has allowed 70 or more points in 2 of its last 3 games.

Vanderbilt has scored 66 or more points in 9 of its last 10 including 80 or more points in 7 of its last 10. It has allowed 72 or more in 3 of its last 4.

Mississippi State at Vanderbilt odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Mississippi State at Vanderbilt odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Vanderbilt Commodores (13-1, 1-0 SEC) welcome the No. 13 Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-1, 1-0) to Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Mississippi State, which is No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, enters on a 7-game win streak. Mississippi State is 8-6 against the spread (ATS) on the season and 3-1 ATS in its last 4 games.

Vanderbilt, which has also won 7 straight, beat the LSU Tigers 80-72 Saturday, closing as a 2-point road favorite. Mississippi State at Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

BET VANDERBILT (+125).

The Commodores are surging and have covered 6 of 7 games with a single-digit spread. They are 1-0 straight up as underdogs as well. Vanderbilt has yet to lose at home and is 2-0 with a spread of 3.5 points or fewer.

Mississippi State’s top 2 weapons (G Claudell Harris Jr. and G Josh Hubbard) each shoot under 44% from the field, so it may struggle to keep pace offensively.

Take VANDERBILT (+125) to pull off the home upset.

Against the spread

PASS.

The spread is certainly playable; however, getting plus money on the ML is preferred.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 154.5 (-110).

The Commodores are 0-3 O/U in their last 3 games and 2-5 O/U in their previous 7. They are 6-7-1 O/U on the season.

Georgia Tech vs. Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Georgia Tech 24, Vanderbilt 23

Moneyline

PASS.

While there could be some value on the Commodores to come out on top, they are better played on the spread. Georgia Tech struggled on the road and shouldn’t be considered as a sizable favorite.

Against the spread

BET VANDERBILT +3 (-110).

The Commodores have had an impressive offense this season led by QB Diego Pavia, who said he feels healthy and expects to play. Behind his explosiveness, Vandy put up 23 points on Tennessee, 24 on Texas and 40 on Alabama, all top-tier defenses. It was 4-1 ATS on the road this season.

The Yellow Jackets didn’t have the same road performances. They were 3-4 ATS in their 7 games either on the road or on a neutral field. Discounting the game against Georgia, Georgia Tech tallied a grand total of 19 points in its previous 2 games away from home.

Take the more consistent offense who has been better on the road and back VANDERBILT +3 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 50.5 (-110).

Neither offense is coming into this battle surging. While Georgia Tech dropped 42 on Georgia in its last game, it has scored 25 points or fewer in 4 of its last 7 and was 3-4 O/U in those. It finished 4-8 O/U on the season.

The Commodores didn’t top 24 points after their Week 6 victory over Alabama in which they dropped 40. Vanderbilt scored 20 points or fewer in 3 of 5 road games.

Couple those trends and back UNDER 50.5 (-110).

Tennessee at Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Tennessee 31, Vanderbilt 27

Moneyline

PASS.

This line is too big for a conference rivalry like this one. Tennessee (-450) gets the win, but Vanderbilt makes them work which is why I’ll take my bet to the spread.

Against the spread

BET VANDERBILT +11 (-110).

Tennessee holds the edge in talent, but Vanderbilt has shown it can thrive as an underdog, with 3 outright wins as double-digit underdogs this season, including victories over the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers. Facing the 9th-toughest schedule nationally, the Commodores are 7-1 ATS and confident heading into this rivalry.

Tennessee leads the series 80-33-5, winning 5 straight, including last year’s 48-24 victory where Vanderbilt covered as 27-point underdogs. However, SEC road games have been unpredictable, and playing in Nashville against a motivated in-state rival is no easy task.

Vanderbilt excels at controlling tempo and limiting turnovers, ranking second nationally with just 6 giveaways. Pavia’s mobility adds another layer, allowing him to frustrate Tennessee’s defense if the offensive line holds up.

With a winning season on the line, Vanderbilt has plenty of motivation. If they control the pace, Tennessee may struggle to cover in what could be a tight game.

Over/Under

BET OVER 48.5 (-110).

Pavia is Vanderbilt’s key playmaker, combining 16 passing TDs with 671 rushing yards. His mobility can challenge Tennessee’s aggressive pass rush and create big plays. Vanderbilt’s offense, scoring 29.7 points per game, thrives on ball control and sustained drives, balancing 187.1 passing yards and 142.1 rushing yards per game.

Tennessee’s offense is explosive, averaging 39.5 points with a near-perfect balance of 228.5 passing and 228.1 rushing yards per game. However, their defense, while top-10 overall, has struggled against mobile QBs and allowed 20+ points in four of their last six SEC games.

Vanderbilt’s defense, yielding 30.2 PPG in SEC play, faces a tough test against Tennessee, which has been Over in 3 of its last 4 games. While the Vols aim for a playoff berth, Vanderbilt is chasing its first winning season since 2013 and looks to play spoiler in a motivated home effort.

Drake vs. Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Vanderbilt 71, Drake 70

Moneyline

PASS.

This will be a great matchup between 2 teams playing excellent basketball. It’s too close to call, so I’m avoiding the moneyline. Instead, I’m focusing on the spread and taking Drake with the points. This should be a tightly contested game, and I like the Bulldogs to cover.

Against the spread

BET DRAKE +3.5 (-105).

The championship game in Charleston promises to be an exciting matchup, showcasing two programs on the rise. Vanderbilt plays at a faster pace, but Drake has made noticeable strides defensively in this tournament and will try to slow down the Commodores and exploit their defensive gaps.

Vanderbilt allows 43.4% shooting from the field and 38% from beyond the arc, while Drake hits 39% from deep and scores 108 points per 100 possessions. Drake’s experienced squad, including veterans from coach Ben McCollum’s previous school, will be a tough challenge. While Vanderbilt’s scoring abilities make them the favorite, Drake is a live underdog. Take the  points.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 143.5 (-105).

Drake has proven its defensive ability in this tournament, holding FAU to 63 points and the Miami Hurricanes to the 69 points despite their high-scoring offenses. The Bulldogs have hit the Under in 3 of their last 4, while Vanderbilt is 1-2-1 against the Over in their last 4. Drake’s slower pace (343rd on KenPom) allows them to control the game tempo and run an efficient offense, averaging 75.4 points per game. Although Vanderbilt averages 85 points, Drake’s methodical approach should keep the total Under 143.5.

Texas at Vanderbilt odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas at Vanderbilt odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The 6th-ranked Texas Longhorns (6-1, 2-1 SEC) and 25th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (5-2, 2-1) meet Saturday at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. ET (SEC Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Texas vs. Vanderbilt odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Texas is looking to bounce back after a 30-15 loss at DKR against Georgia, its 1st setback of the season. After opening the season 4-0 against the spread (ATS) in the 1st 4 games, the Longhorns are 1-2 ATS in the past 3 outings. The Under has cashed in each of the past 3 games, too.

Vanderbilt stunned the world with a 40-35 victory against Alabama Oct. 5 as a 23-point underdog, and it followed that with a 20-13 victory at Kentucky as a 13-point ‘dog Oct. 12.

Last week, it’s possible Vandy was caught looking ahead, stumbling to a 24-14 win over Ball State as a 27.5-point favorite. The Under has cashed in each of the past 2 games after the Over was 5-0 in the 1st 5 outings.

Texas at Vanderbilt picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 37, Vanderbilt 17

Moneyline

Texas (-800) will cost you 8 times your potential return, which is way too much risk and not nearly enough reward. Even as part of a multi-leg parlay, including the Longhorns isn’t a recommended betting strategy.

Vanderbilt (+550) cannot be trusted, though. While QB Diego Pavia is a very strong signal caller, and he was huge against the Crimson Tide. But, he and the Commodores will be facing a difficult matchup against a very angry Longhorns team.

AVOID.

Against the spread

It’s worth playing TEXAS -17.5 (-105) lightly on the road. It’s easy to consider Vanderbilt +17.5 (-115) after upset wins over Alabama and Kentucky, but it really showed some weaknesses against Ball State last weekend.

While the Commodores won, it still has work to do before it takes that next step. The win over Bama was amazing, but it won’t happen against another national title contender.

Over/Under

OVER 51.5 (-110) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at most.

There is some risk here, as the Under has cashed in 3 in a row for the Longhorns. The Over is 1-0 in the only true road game for Texas so far, however.

For Vandy, the Over is 5-2 in 7 games, although there is risk since the total has gone low in each of the previous 2 contests.
