Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Sam Ehlinger notes, depth chart updates’

The latest Locked on Longhorns Podcast gets you ready for the first game for Texas. Notes from Sam Ehlinger and the depth chart.

The Texas Longhorns are now three days away from kickoff. Locked on Longhorns Podcast returns to get you ready for kickoff. On Tuesday quarterback Sam Ehlinger met with the media to talk about the upcoming game. He spoke about being hopeful for the upcoming game on Saturday. With the postponements of Big 12 games, Ehlinger discussed that he had his fingers crossed that the Longhorns get the opportunity to play against another team.

The senior leader pointed out two players having a great camp. He points to two wide receivers who need to have big years with the losses of Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson to the NFL.

The Longhorns have released the two-deep depth chart for the upcoming game against the UTEP Miners. Which position groups were surprising? Where are some of the young guns at for the opening game of 2020? Does Texas have a shot at the College Football Playoffs? According to College Gameday’s Kirk Herbstreit, he thinks so. What do the Longhorns have to do to get into the playoffs?

So far the Big 12 Conference have had three games postponed. Texas Christian, Oklahoma State and Baylor have all had their opening game delayed. OSU will move their game against Tulsa back one week. With some delays, players have been opting out. Could Samuel Cosmi be one of those players?

The top offensive tackle and blindside blocker for Ehlinger, Cosmi weighed in on his future with the Longhorns. Locked on Longhorns looks around the NFL Draft community to find the latest mock drafts. Which Longhorns are projected to hear their names called in the three day event.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger hopes football can bring people together

Senior quarterback of the Texas Longhorns, Sam Ehlinger is hopeful that football this year can bring America back together.

This offseason has been one of the most odd and trying times in recent memory. March 13, 2020 is the day that sports died. It has been 180 days since Texas athletics have been on a field, court or diamond. This Saturday it will finally come to an end, at least that is the hope right now. Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger met with media on Tuesday and he shared that same thought process.

“I still got my fingers crossed that we get to Saturday,” Ehlinger said in a hopeful manner. “I know how quickly things can pop up. So I guess that’s a little shaky there. We’re just very grateful to get to play on Saturday. Everything feels pretty normal from a football standpoint and we’re just excited to get back out there and play someone else other than ourselves.”

Given the fact that three of the scheduled Big 12 nonconference games have been postponed, Ehlinger couldn’t be more dead on. One should believe that the entire Texas Longhorns fanbase have their collective fingers crossed. With a little over 72 hours to kickoff, team and fans alike are probably pretty nervous.

The one thing about college football and sports in general is that this is an opportunity to bring people together. Fans of different upbringings, different backgrounds and social statuses coming together for their passion. The game of football. Ehlinger believes that this is a great opportunity for just that, bringing a nation together.

“This football season is a lot different than previous ones when I’ve been here.” Ehlinger continues, “I hope that this year can bring back a sense of normalcy to America and show people that we’re still a very strong country. I know it’s been very hard with everything going on, being at home and not being able to return to normal life. But I also hope that college football and our team can show America what happens when people from different backgrounds come together for one goal. It shows people that we’re no different. As a team, and with love and everything that a team has, you can accomplish really cool things.

Texas Football: Longhorns heavy favorites according to BetMGM odds

The early lines are out for the Texas Longhorns season opener on Sept. 12, with the line set at 42 in favor of the home team from BetMGM.

This past weekend the Texas Longhorns opening opponent took the field in their opener. The UTEP Miners defeated the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 24-14. Early on in that game the Lumberjacks had the lead but couldn’t hold onto it as the Miners rallied from a 14-3 deficit to score 21 unanswered. If the Miners fall down early to the Longhorns this coming Saturday, it might be all she wrote.

The Longhorns football team has a lot more firepower than SFA. Given with how UTEP struggled in space, Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington could have big games in Austin. Provided the Longhorns get off to a fast start, they could see plenty of runs as the game wears on. Look for Bijan Robinson to get plenty of looks.

Tom Herman provides injury update before season opener against UTEP

Ahead of the matchup against UTEP, head coach Tom Herman met with the media and provided an injury update for the Texas Longhorns.

For the first time in 288 days, Texas will be playing a home game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. UTEP will be coming to town on Sept. 12, with the Miners already having a game under their belt.

For the Longhorns, practice has been underway since Aug. 7 and some injuries will carry over into the season opener.

Starting with the good news, linebacker Ayodele Adeoye was cleared to return to practice on Sunday. The junior broke his foot in the offseason and was recovering from surgery. After returning to practice, he suffered a minor shoulder injury that now appears good to go.

Adeoye is going to be an important part of the linebacking core, providing more depth for a thin group. Juwan Mitchell is going to start at middle linebacker for now but Adeoye could challenge the former junior college transfer.

Moving towards players who currently have injuries, the Longhorns’ offense is going to be without two role players on Saturday.

Freshman wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon and offensive lineman Isaiah Hookfin are listed as doubtful. Dixon, a 6-foot-0, 180-pound speedster, was expected to provide big play ability from the slot. He will now have to wait to make his Texas debut until conference play begins.

Isaiah Hookfin injured his shoulder recently but was expected to return in time for the start of the season. It appears that he needs just a bit more time. It is unclear at this point on if that will be a lingering issue. Fellow lineman Reese Moore will need a knee scope per the report, much like he did last preseason.

Season Opener: UTEP is ‘right on schedule’ to play the Longhorns

UTEP head coach Dana Dimel spoke with media stated they were “right on schedule” to play the Texas Longhorns in the season opener.

It was made official on Wednesday that the Longhorns would host the Texas-El Paso Miners on September 12th to open the season. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte confirmed in the Forty Acres Insider that was published. Their original matchup was set for September 19th on the original schedule but due to the Big 12 changing to a nine plus one schedule it had to be adjusted.

There were still questions even after the confirmation by Del Conte as to whether or not the game could still be played. Conference USA met on Wednesday evening to discuss their course of action as the fall football season approaches. As other conferences have come out and postponed the season, UTEP’s conference hadn’t yet made a decision. The conference issued the following statement.

Essentially a passive statement to state they were still in discussion about what their final answer will be. On a conference call with media, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby stated that a Big 12 opponent must adhere to their testing standards. If the Miners are afforded the opportunity to play they will be tested three times before they can play in Austin.

Head coach of the Miners Dana Dimel met with the media on Thursday and stated they were “right on schedule” to play against the Longhorns. UTEP had been dealing with a coronavirus outbreak that caused them to halt camp while they determined how to proceed.

Provided that the game doesn’t get cancelled, the Longhorns will host UTEP for their sixth meeting all-time. Texas has won all five matchups with their last game coming in 2016. Texas won 41-6. The Longhorns should be heavy favorites as the Miners are coming off a 1-11 season in 2019.

Texas Football: Schedule now set, Longhorns host UTEP Sept. 12

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte confirmed that the Longhorns will host UTEP on September 12th at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Well it is officially, official. The Texas Longhorns have their schedule set and will kick off one month from today. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte confirmed that the Longhorns will host UTEP at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on September 12th. It was widely speculated that this would indeed be the case, now confirmed.

Del Conte released a statement through the Forty Acres Insider confirming the schedule.

On Wednesday, the Big 12 also announced our 2020 conference football schedule, with our first league game coming on September 26 at Texas Tech. Our conference will continue with the format of nine league games, plus one non-conference game, with all Big 12 competition starting on that September 26 date. Our season opener will be UTEP on September 12 at Campbell-Williams Field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and be followed by a bye week. Each Big 12 team will be guaranteed at least two bye weeks during their schedule. Also, all other fall sports competition (Soccer, Volleyball and Cross Country) can begin September 1. To ensure consistent health and safety protocols, Volleyball and Soccer matches will be limited to conference opponents only. There are still discussions to be had and plans to be made, and we will continue to keep you all abreast of that news as we receive it. We appreciate your patience, understanding and how you all are keeping the faith. We’re excited to be moving forward with our falls sports seasons and preparing to cheer on our Longhorns this fall!

The Longhorns will host the Miners and then will have the following week off before they head to Lubbock, Texas to kick off the conference schedule with Texas Tech.

Former Oklahoma guard Jamal Bieniemy to transfer to UTEP

One of the shocking transfers of the offseason at Oklahoma happened away from the football field. Jamal Bienimy has his new destination.

One of the shocking transfers of the offseason at Oklahoma happened away from the football field.

Rising guard Jamal Bieniemy showed a lot of promise at the end of his freshman season. His sophomore year at Oklahoma didn’t go as planned, but his defense and length made life tough for opposing guards.

Bieniemy shockingly hit the transfer portal on April 10. On May 21, the former Oklahoma guard has reportedly ended up at UTEP.

The Katy, Texas, native started in 17 games as a freshman and then in 30 of 31 games as a sophomore in 2019-20. Bieniemy shot 40.3 percent from the 3-point line in 2018-19, but that number fell to a lackluster 25.3 percent in 2019-20. He averaged just .3 more points (5.2) as a sophomore than as a freshman (4.9).

Despite that, Bieniemy brought a presence on the defensive end of the court to Oklahoma. UTEP went above .500 for the first time since 2015-16 last season. The Miners have won 36 games in the last three seasons.

The Sooners replaced Bieniemy with North Texas transfer Umoja Gibson and Cal State Northridge guard Elijah Harkless this offseason.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: UTEP Miners Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense only scored 235 points, was 116th in the nation in total yards per game, 119th in scoring O, and … it was the best showing by the attack in three years.

Baby steps.

The team could’ve really used an offseason full of practices to figure out the quarterback situation and finally settle in on one. Transfer Gavin Hardison saw time in two games last season, but he retained his sophomore status. He’s a 6-3, 205-pound passer, but he’ll have to fight off former JUCO transfer Isaiah Bravo and good-looking 6-5 mobile redshirt freshman TJ Goodwin.

– The top two receivers return, but more options have to emerge. Jacob Cowing is the deep threat – averaging close to 18 yards per game with a team-leading 550 yards on the season – and senior Justin Garrett is back after leading the way with 40 catches.

Coming in to add a little more pop is New Mexico transfer Q Drennan, who missed most of the last two seasons but was a big play threat – averaging 21 yards per catch – when over his first two yeas with the Lobos.

Senior Quardraiz Wadley ran for a team-high 627 yards and seven scores in 2018, but he missed all of last year with a toe injury. He’s back, along with Deion Hankins, shifty senior Joshua Fields, and a slew of other backs for the rotation. The Miners will go with the hot hand behind a line that returns three starters and has the veteran options at tackle to hope for just a wee bit more production.
