Opponents to watch: 3 Utah State players Alabama should know before Week 1

Here are three players from Utah State that Crimson Tide fans MUST know about before Week 1.

Alabama will open the 2022 season with a rare home game. The evening kickoff against Utah State will be the Crimson Tide’s first game since losing in the national title game to Georgia, which may mean trouble for the Aggies.

Though this will be Alabama’s first game of the season, Utah State has already gotten through a full four quarters, which was a home win against UConn in Week 0.

Though Alabama is expected to win by a handful of touchdowns, there are some true difference-makers on the Aggies roster. After seeing what the Aggies have to offer on both offense and defense, here are three Utah State players Crimson Tide fans need to know about.

Utah State Aggies Preview 2022

It was one of the best stories of 2021.

Blake Anderson was terrific at Arkansas State. He won two Sun Belt championships, got another division title, got to six bowl games and won 51 games in his seven seasons.

In 2019 he tragically lost his wife to cancer, pressed on through, came back for the 2020 season, and after his first losing campaign, left to take over the Utah State job.

The Aggies had a down 2020, but they didn’t need a total overhaul. Anderson came in to a change of scenery, brought some key parts with him, and … boom. He came up with his best season as a head coach.

Coming off an 11 win season with a Mountain West title and a bowl win over Oregon State from the Pac-12, Anderson has been able to bring the program back, his offensive style should keep working, and he’s got a team good enough to shoot for another championship.

Utah State Aggies Preview 2022: Offense

Well that worked just fine.

The Utah State offense got an infusion of energy, talent, and ideas with the new coaching staff getting everything going with the passing game, and the team averaged 446 yards and 33 points per game.

The ground game was okay, the passing attack was amazing, and everything clicked going from averaging 276 yards per game in 2020 to 449 last year.

Veteran quarterback Logan Bonner came over with the coaches from Arkansas State, stepped in, and threw 36 touchdown passes with 12 picks as he pushed the ball down the field without a problem and kept everything moving. On the way is Wyoming transfer Levi Williams – he threw 13 touchdown passes and ran for 13 scores in three seasons.

The combination of Deven Thompkins, Brandon Bowling, and Derek Wright are gone after combining for 206 of the 303 catches and 31 of the 41 touchdown grabs. Bringing in Brian Cobbs from Maryland helps, and Justin McGriff is a good veteran target.

The offensive line needs to be stronger in pass protection, but just about everyone is back – this group did a good enough job – around all-star left tackle Alfred Edwards and right guard Quazzel White. The running game has to be better, though.

The offense doesn’t have to crank up 200 yards per game – it averaged 142 per outing – but it has to be a whole lot better than 3.6 yards per carry. Calvin Tyler led the way with 911 yards and seven scores, and John Gentry adds a quick option, but they combined to average around four yards a pop.

Utah State Aggies Preview 2022: Defense

The defense wasn’t a rock, but it was far improved over the 2020 version. It led the Mountain West in tackles for loss, but gave up close to 400 yards per game. There was a lot of bending but not a ton of breaking.

There were a few strange performances when everything melted down – Wyoming and Air Force went off – but the D allowed 24 points or fewer in seven of the last nine games.

Top playmaker in the backfield Nick Heninger is gone, but Byron Vaughns is a disruptive force on one end, Hale Motu’apuaka is a 6-1, 280-pound anchor on the nose, and there’s help from the transfer portal with Daniel Grzesiak from Nevada for the outside and 280-pound JUCO transfer Tavian Coleman for the interior.

The secondary needs to come up with more big plays. It wasn’t totally awful, but the corners didn’t generate picks or a whole lot of broken up passes. Hunter Reynolds is the leading returning tackler making 83 stops at one safety spot, and Michael Anyanwu is a veteran at one corner.

The transfer portal took corner Cam Lampkin (Washington State) and safety Monte McGary (Kansas), but Miami transfer Gurvan Hall will be a key part at one safety job.

Also coming in is Anthony Switzer from Arkansas State for one outside linebacker job, and Washington’s MJ Tafisi will take over on the inside.

Mountain West Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Mountain West predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

With all the chatter in the college football world about expansion and realignment – the Mountain West is deep in the rumor mix with a whole lot of possibilities – there’s still a 2022 season to play. How should it all shape up in the Mountain West?

Beyond just seeing if the Pac-12 and Big 12 are interested, there’s one huge change – the divisions are gone.

The conference has several strong teams, and the two best will play for the championship.

It’s a free for all among the teams to get into the top spots, but the schedules stay intact. There’s a slight imbalance with the stronger teams in what used to be in the West Division facing each other, but they would’ve had to do that anyway.

How should the season go and where is everyone projected to finish? Here are the preseason predictions for all the Mountain West teams.

SERIES HISTORY: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Utah State Aggies

Alabama takes on Utah State to open up the 2022 season. The history between these two programs consists of a single game!

For only the second time ever, the Alabama Crimson Tide will face off against the Utah State Aggies. The Tide and Aggies’ have only ever faced off on the field once before.

The lone meeting came in 2004 as Alabama handily swiftly defeated Utah State 48-17.

Just like 2022, the 2004 matchup was also the season opener for the Tide. Alabama heads into the 2022 campaign ranked No. 1 in all of the major polls, led by the reigning Heisman trophy winner, Bryce Young.

Utah State, meanwhile, has one game under their belt already this season. The Aggies took on the UConn Huskies in Week Zero and walked away with a 31-20 victory. According to Tipico Sports, the Crimson Tide are currently 41.5-point favorites.

Can the 2022 Aggies fare better than their 2004 team, or will Nick Saban’s squad get the best of them?

UConn vs Utah State Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

New head coach Jim Mora Jr. hit the transfer portal hard to give the Huskies some actual options at various positions and enough depth to hold up better.

Getting QB Ta’Quan Roberson from Penn State is a plus, there’s experience all across the offense, and on the other side the linebacking corps should be strong enough to hold up against a Utah State offense whose running game might be held in check.

The first step to making UConn football okay is finding one thing that works. Third down conversion were an issue last year, but any control of the clock will be a big deal.

Most importantly, the Huskies have to come up with takeaways to stay alive in this – last year’s Utah State offense turned it over a bit too much.

For all of its problems, the UConn secondary might take a big step forward with all the experience returning.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Utah State Will Win

Welcome to the Utah State passing game.

The Aggies are going to be more explosive and more consistent. There will be a few good UConn defensive stops just because it’s Week 0 – Utah State won’t be razor-sharp quite yet – but QB Logan Bonner should get more time to work.

The Aggie O line struggled in pass protection, but it’s a veteran group that should be more cohesive. It’ll look great against a revamped UConn defensive front that might need a little while to get going.

Get a few scores, and everything should be okay because …

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will be better, but it might take a bit before the offense can figure out how to put points on the board.

Last year’s offense averaged just 15.6 points per game, failing to come up with more than 17 in five of the last six games.

It won’t be a perfect performance by the Aggies, but it won’t have to be.

Tequila, a wedding and Vegas panic: The $1K bets on Utah State to win the CFP national championship, explained

Yes, you read correct. Utah State. Not No. 7 Utah.

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Are you confused as to why the Utah State football program suddenly saw multiple $1,000 bets to win a title this season? Well, we finally have an answer and we’re here to help.

College football season hasn’t even started yet and we’ve already gotten the most ambitious bet we’ll probably see all season long.

Two friends, Pete Kizenko and Robert Doran, teamed up to place two $1,000 bets on the Utah Aggies to win this season’s national championship.

Not the No. 7 ranked Utah Utes of the Pac-12, but the Utah State Aggies of the Mountain West, who have 1000-1 odds of winning the title.

How did they arrive at this bet? Tequila.

What started as a suggestion to take the over on the Aggies’ win totals—thanks to some unintentional hype from former Michigan Wolverine athletes Doran drank with at a wedding the previous night—turned into a “[expletive] it! Let’s hammer the national championship” upon review of Utah State’s schedule.

The $1,000 down on the Aggies left many, including Caesar’s Sportsbook confused and searching for a logical reason behind such an unlikely bet. Especially after two more bets of the same size came in on Utah State. One was from Kizenko, who doubled down after noticing his action didn’t move Utah State’s line at all. A third wager of $1,000 came from an unidentified bettor in Illinois.

Per ESPN’s David Purdum:

As news spread on Twitter of the three $1,000 bets on Utah State in three days, there were questions like, “Did they get Utah and Utah State mixed up?” and comments like, “Probably the worst bet I have ever seen.”

Meanwhile, [the] Caesars’ trading team were asking, “What’s the angle? What are we missing? Because it’s just so unusual.”

“It’s funny, because you had everybody thinking that these smart people are doing crazy research on Utah State and that it’s some like hidden Messiah golden pick,” said the 33-year-old Doran, who owns the breakfast and brunch spot Almost Home General. “And really, it just came from me ripping tequila shots with some players at a wedding.”

If five months from now we are talking about the Utah State Aggies as national champions, we’re going to circle back to this moment and remember that tequila shots were the driving force behind some history.

That and some Michigan alums who should absolutely get into handicapping. Or scouting.

WATCH: Alabama’s offense sharpens skills in fall camp

Alabama football is back in action on the practice field and looks eager to start the regular season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide’s 2022 campaign officially gets underway on Sept. 3 when they host the Utah State Aggies in Bryant-Denny Stadium. However, fall camp has started which means football is back.

Despite being only four weeks away from the start of the season, Alabama is already looking very sharp and eager to get better each day. In the video, Bryce Young looks smooth and in rhythm with his receivers. He’s ready to continue adding to his already storied legacy in Tuscaloosa.

Despite having a new cast of receivers and backs, Young knows he can rely on the playmakers around him to be special and make his job easier.

The entire season will come down to how the offensive line looks.

For the comfort of Tide fans, Coach Saban still looks as mad and as stressed out as ever. Although, this year he is debuting a new look with some sunglasses on the field.
