Texas remains unranked in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Four teams from the state of Texas are ranked, but none are the Longhorns.

Another Sunday afternoon thinking what could have been.

Texas once again held a large lead in the first half against Oklahoma State but collapsed in the second half. Running back Jaylen Warren was too much to contain for four quarters and the offense went virtually nowhere. Overall, a horrible performance from Steve Sarkisian’s squad.

Even before dropping to 4-3, Texas was not ranked in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Somehow, four coaches still decided to vote for the Longhorns.

Within the rest of the Big 12, Oklahoma (No. 2) has surged into the top two thanks to Iowa dropping one at home against Purdue. Oklahoma State (No. 9) has broken into the top 10 as well after their win in Austin. Baylor is the only other team ranked, vaulting up seven spots to No. 20.

Four teams from the state of Texas are ranked, but none are the Longhorns.

Alabama back inside top four in USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Alabama moves up a spot after the Mississippi State win.

Alabama responded to their loss last week in a big way, defeating Mississippi State on the road, 49-9. It was an excellent day on both sides of the ball with both stars, Bryce Young and Will Anderson, shining bright.

With the win, the Crimson Tide moved back into a coveted top-four spot in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Moving up one spot to No. 4, Iowa losing to Purdue at home caused some shift at the top.

The Big Ten occupies the majority of the Big Ten, with Ohio State (No. 5), Michigan (No. 6), Michigan State (No. 7), and Penn State (No. 9) all getting square to face one another.

Texas A&M went up another spot after beating Missouri at No. 17. They remain the highest two-loss team in the country, with Auburn (No. 22) and Clemson (No. 24) the only other multi-loss teams in the poll.

Are the Gators still ranked in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll?

Florida is falling out of the rankings after its loss to LSU on Saturday.

Florida’s loss to LSU on Saturday took a flamethrower to whatever hope may have remained for this season after a loss to Kentucky two weeks prior. The victory for the Tigers wasn’t enough to save coach Ed Orgeron’s job, but it did turn up the heat on the losing coach considerably.

Coach Dan Mullen is now 2-6 in his last eight games against Power Five teams, and now this UF squad sits at just 4-3 with a date with the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs coming up after a bye.

And the Gators won’t have a number next to their name for that matchup. With the defeat, Florida dropped from No. 17 to unranked in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. UF is still receiving 23 votes, the fourth most of any unranked team behind Iowa State, Utah and Arkansas.

Six SEC teams are ranked in this week’s update: No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Alabama, No. 12 Ole Miss, No. 14 Kentucky, No. 17 Texas A&M and No. 22 Auburn. The Wildcats saw a small drop despite losing by 17 to the Bulldogs on Saturday, and Auburn is back in the rankings after a win over Arkansas.

Here’s the full coaches poll for this week.

The Wisconsin Badgers were finally able to get back to .500 this week after a narrow victory against the Army Black Knights but were still not included in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Despite the Badgers not being included in the poll, there were several Big Ten teams that moved. After Iowa’s upset loss to the Purdue Boilermakers, the Hawkeyes fell out of the top 10, while Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State all moved up after wins.

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll top 10 for this week includes Georgia(1), Oklahoma(2), Cincinnati(3), Alabama(4), Ohio State(5), Michigan(6), Michigan State(7), Penn State(8), Oklahoma State(9) and Oregon(10).

The Badgers will now look to even their conference record, as they take on the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. CDT.

Below are the Big Ten teams featured in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Oklahoma climbs in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

After a big win over the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday night, the Oklahoma Sooners got a bump in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

[mm-video type=video id=01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh/01fj7nqpt36yqs64yfrh-973db9747f736df95f53637f573ab808.jpg]

The Oklahoma Sooners are trending in the right direction after a 21 point win on Saturday night. The Sooners climbed to No. 2 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after a huge performance from true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams, making his first start threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another 66 yards and a score as the Sooners won comfortably over an FBS opponent for the first time in 2021.

Oklahoma’s No. 2 ranking, represents the highest they’ve been in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll this season. After falling to No. 5 just a few weeks ago, wins over the Texas Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs have the Sooners back in the coaches’ good graces.

Georgia maintains its stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll. The top five includes No. 3 Cincinnati, No. 4 Alabama, and No. 5 Ohio State.

Oklahoma is joined in the Poll by fellow Big 12 bunkmates, the Oklahoma State Cowboys at No. 9 and the Baylor Bears at No. 20. Oklahoma State overcame a 14 point first-half deficit to knock of the Texas Longhorns in Austin. Baylor picked up a big non-conference win over previously ranked BYU.

Penn State passed by division rival in updated USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Where is Penn State in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll after Week 7?

Penn State did not move up or move down in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll this week while on a bye week, but the Nittany Lions did get passed by one of its division rivals while sitting at home. Michigan State moved up two spots following a close victory over Indiana in week 7, as the Spartans moved up to No. 7 in this week’s coaches poll.

Penn State remained No. 8, the same ranking they held the previous week after suffering its first loss of the season at Iowa in Week 6. Iowa, after getting humiliated at home by Purdue, actually fell behind the Nittany Lions after tumbling from No. 2 down to No. 11 this week.

The Big Ten still has four teams ranked in the top 10 of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll with Penn State coming in behind No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, and No. 7 Michigan State.

Georgia secured all 65 first-place votes in this week’s coaches poll to lock down the No. 1 overall ranking for a second straight week. But Cincinnati’s path to its highest ranking in the coaches ranking was blocked by a resurgent Oklahoma. Oklahoma moved up one spot to No. 2 to replace Iowa behind the Bulldogs, and Cincinnati moved up to No. 3. No. 4 Alabama, Ohio State, and Michigan each moved up one spot and the Spartans moved up two. No. 9 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Oregon round out the top 10 this week.

Former Penn State opponent Auburn popped back up into the top 25 of the coaches poll this week following their win over Arkansas, which dropped the Razorbacks out of the top 25 as their losing skid hits three games after a fun start to the season. Pittsburgh also surged into the rankings this week at No. 23, moving just ahead of No. 24 Clemson to setup a top 25 matchup between the Panthers and Tigers coming up.

Oklahoma named a week 6 winner, A QB Quandary, and More

What does Oklahoma’s historic win over the Texas Longhorns mean for the Sooners moving forward?

If you’re still processing the emotional whiplash of Oklahoma’s 55-48 win over Texas in the Red River Showdown, you’re most certainly not alone.

A quarterback controversy, an offense discovering its big play ability, and a resilient defensive effort are just a few pieces of an incredible story that reminds us all why we love college football so much in the first place. In his weekly recap, Paul Myerberg listed the Oklahoma Sooners as one of college football’s biggest winners in week 6.

Down 28-7 after the first quarter, OU inserted freshman quarterback Caleb Williams and charged back to beat the rival Longhorns. After playing so well through five games, the Sooners’ defense was shoved early but responded to keep UT out of the end zone from just over midway through the second quarter until one minute left in the fourth. The win keeps OU on track for the playoff but does create a bit of a dilemma for coach Lincoln Riley, who may hand the offense over to Williams after he accounted for 300 yards of offense and three scores. – Myerburg

What does this mean for the Sooners moving forward? Here’s one pro and one woe from Saturday’s historic win that Oklahoma will carry into week 7.
