In all years, the preseason college football polls are going to be more fun, more interesting, and get more attention considering this has hardly been a normal offseason.

What do the coaches who vote in this really think?

No, the polls don’t matter in a College Football Playoff era, but they’re all still a baseline to work off of.

Last season, Clemson was No. 1 in the preseason Coaches Poll, Alabama was No. 2, Oklahoma was fourth, Ohio State fifth, and national champion LSU was sixth. Georgia was third, by the way, with the top ten the exact same as what the preseason AP poll was.

Based off historical precedent, what happened the year before, and momentum coming off the previous bowl season, the best guess when it comes to how the coaches are going to think is to assume that 1) they’ll go by what they know, they’ll like 2) who has the stars at starting quarterback, and 3) in this year with so much uncertainty, they’re vote for who has the most returning talent.

When the real thing comes out, we’ll break it all down and get more into it, but first, here’s the call on what the 2020 preseason USA Today Coaches Poll will be (number in parentheses is where team finished in final ranking).

Texas Baseball: USA Today’s Coaches Poll has Longhorns ranked No 22

The USA Today/Coaches poll has been released and the Texas Longhorns are currently ranked 22nd in the nation.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team has started off hot winning 13 of their first 16 games. In the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic, the Longhorns beat the number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks 8-7 and dropped a game to the 11th ranked LSU Tigers 4-3. The Longhorns have also played three weekend series going a perfect 9-0.

In the latest USA Today Coaches Poll that was released on March 9th, the Longhorns came in at number 22 in the poll. They are just two points based on votes behind the number 21 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Texas finished seven points ahead of Texas A&M who comes in at 23rd. The Aggies and Longhorns will have a one-game duel in College Station on March 31st.

Following the five games left on their nine-game homestead, the Longhorns will travel to Frisco, Texas for a matchup with UT-Arlington. The team then starts Big 12 play with a trip to Norman for a three-game set with Oklahoma.

Michigan State rises to No. 12 in latest USA Today Coaches Poll

The Spartans are up five spots after winning consecutive games against ranked opponents last week.

The Michigan State men’s basketball team is rising at the right time.

A day after the Spartans clinched a share of their third straight Big Ten title, MSU has risen to No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It’s a five-spot climb from their previous ranking of No. 17.

Michigan State is the second-highest ranked Big Ten team behind No. 11 Maryland. Wisconsin (19), Ohio State (20), Illinois (22), and Iowa (25) round out Big Ten teams in the top 25. Penn State, Michigan, and Rutgers are all in the “others receiving votes” section.

Michigan State has drawn the 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and opens their postseason run on Friday where they will take on the winner of the matchup between No. 7-seeded Ohio State and No. 10 Purdue.

Michigan State rises to No. 24 in USA TODAY Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

Despite only winning one game in the last week against Nebraska, Michigan State has risen up the Coaches and AP Men’s Basketball Polls.

After a week in which Michigan State beat the lowly Nebraska Cornhuskers by double digits on the road, the Spartans have risen up the USA TODAY Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, heading up the poll by one spot to number 24 where they are now tied with Arizona.

MSU is also ranked at the number 24 spot in the AP Poll, but they hold that position exclusively in the eyes of the Associated Press.

This is a perfectly fair position for the Spartans to be in at this point as they’ve certainly had some stumbling blocks of late, particularly with a home loss to the 22-5 Maryland Terrapins.

Michigan State will have every opportunity to rise up the rankings to end the season. Their last four games will all be played against ranked opponents as they face Iowa, Maryland, Penn State, and Ohio State to close out the regular season.

The first of those match-ups will come on Tuesday when they face Iowa at home.

Ohio State Buckeyes ranked No. 23 in USA Today Coaches Poll

The Ohio State basketball team,despite splitting the last week of games, have risen in USA Today’s latest Coaches Poll.

Ohio State basketball has had quite the season.

They’ve showcased dynamic offensive firepower at times while also having spurts of horrific, turnover-filled play. That Jekyll-and-Hyde type play is exactly what fans were given a glimpse of this past week.

The week started with a troubling road loss to Iowa and ended with a stellar home victory over Maryland, avenging their earlier loss to the Terrapins.

That said, the duo of performances actually led to Ohio State moving up in the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll.

OSU has been ranked No. 23 by the coaches, the fifth-best team in the Big Ten and one of six Big Ten teams ranked. Michigan State was the only Big Ten team showing in the rankings below Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are up one spot from last week, and its history in the poll shows just how fickle they’ve been this season. Ohio State is the only team in the Coaches Poll this season to have been ranked in the top two and also have been unranked.

That sums up the season, and with the win over Maryland, Ohio State should be close to being officially locked into the NCAA Tournament, something to smile at amidst extreme road concerns.

 

Oklahoma softball drops to No. 3 in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Oklahoma softball (8-1) dropped one spot to No. 3 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

After suffering their first loss of the season to unranked Long Beach State last weekend, Oklahoma softball (8-1) dropped one spot to No. 3 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

No. 2 Washington suffered their first loss of the season over the weekend as well, losing to Alabama in a five-inning run-rule. Undefeated UCLA, the defending champions, jumped both Washington and Oklahoma to grab the No. 1 spot. The Sooners and Huskies meet up on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

The Sooners salvaged what could have been a crippling loss to Long Beach State by turning around and beating then-No. 4 Arizona in extra-innings. The Wildcats fell one spot to No. 5.

Undefeated Texas follows Oklahoma at No. 4, three-loss Oklahoma State is at No. 14, and Texas Tech is the final Big 12 team to make the cut at No. 20.

The Sooners take the field next this Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Nebraska in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, CA.

Michigan State men’s basketball holds at 25 in USA Today Coaches Poll

The Spartans hold steady in the coaches poll after splitting pair of games.

It was a week of little change in the two major polls for Michigan State basketball.

After splitting a pair of games last week, the Michigan State men’s basketball team held steady at the No. 25 spot in the USA Today coaches poll. MSU won on the road at then-No. 23 Illinois and lost to then-No. 9 Maryland Saturday at the Breslin Center.

Michigan State is one of five Big Ten teams in the top 25, the most of any conference. Maryland leads the way at No. 7. The Terps are followed by Penn State (No. 9), Iowa (No. 20), Ohio State (No. 24). Michigan, Illinois, Rutgers, and Wisconsin all received votes.

Michigan State will have an easing of their schedule. After playing five games in the first 15 days of February, the Spartans only have three games in the next 16 days. They’ll hit the road to take on Nebraska this Thursday (8:30 FS1).

MSU holds on to the last spot in the rankings after 0-2 week.

After losing games to Penn State and Michigan last week, the Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball team has fallen to the bottom of the USA TODAY Coaches Poll top 25. In total the Spartans have lost three straight and are 3-5 in their last eight games.

It’s an 11-point plummet for MSU, by far the steepest of any still-ranked team. Michigan State is one of two teams with eight losses in the ranking. The other is No. 24 Texas Tech.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Maryland still leads the way holding at No. 9. The Terps are followed by Penn State (13), Iowa (17) and Illinois (23). Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers and Michigan all received votes.

Michigan State travels to Champagne to take on the No. 23 Illini Tuesday night (9:00 ESPN).
