What could/might the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll look like when it’s released in August?

Along with the AP Poll, the Coaches Poll is always a good snapshot of how the world views the top teams, and it helps set the expectations for the season.

Last year Alabama was the No. 1 in the first poll, and eventual national champion Georgia started out 5th. Clemson was 2, Oklahoma 3, Ohio State was 4.

And Cincinnati? It started out 10th, and in a massive whiff – and we said so at the time – Michigan didn’t even make the top 25, starting out in the Others Receiving Votes category being ranked, technically, 33rd.

So how does the preseason Coaches Poll usually differ from the AP version? The two are usually pretty much the same, but they do tend to give the bigger name coaches a wee bit more credit. They also tend to go with the brand names a little bit more.

For example, last year the coaches had Texas at 19, the AP had it at 21. The AP had Utah and Arizona State in the top 25, and the coaches left didn’t have the two Pac-12 teams in at all, but had USC ranked one spot higher – 14 to 15 – than the did.

To note, this is NOT the actual 2022 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be. Once the real version is released, we’ll break it all down and do a deep dive analysis.

Before getting started, note that below is NOT the actual 2021 Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be.

The preseason college football polls might not mean what they used to, but they’re still fun, and they’re still a great indicator of the expectations going into a season.

Clemson was the preseason No. 1 team in the 2019 and 2020 Coaches Polls. Ohio State was No. 2 in 2020, Alabama third, Georgia fourth, and LSU fifth.

Where was Notre Dame? The eventual College Football Playoff team started out tenth, Texas A&M was 13th, and UCF (21st) and Cincinnati (22nd) were the only preseason ranked teams outside of the Power Five.

What will the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll rankings look like? Considering how insane 2020 was – and how wild the final rankings were – this might be the most interesting preseason top 25 in a while.

This is usually a whole lot easier – this might look totally ridiculous once the real thing comes out considering all the teams outside of the norm likely to be in.

It’s our call based on historical precedent, returning talent, and guessing how the coaches are perceiving teams and big brand names compared to some of 2020’s surprise stars.

Once the 2021 preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll is released, we’ll break it all down and do a deep dive analysis.

In all years, the preseason college football polls are going to be more fun, more interesting, and get more attention considering this has hardly been a normal offseason.

What do the coaches who vote in this really think?

No, the polls don’t matter in a College Football Playoff era, but they’re all still a baseline to work off of.

CFN in 60: The AP Preseason Top 5 Will Be …

Last season, Clemson was No. 1 in the preseason Coaches Poll, Alabama was No. 2, Oklahoma was fourth, Ohio State fifth, and national champion LSU was sixth. Georgia was third, by the way, with the top ten the exact same as what the preseason AP poll was.

Based off historical precedent, what happened the year before, and momentum coming off the previous bowl season, the best guess when it comes to how the coaches are going to think is to assume that 1) they’ll go by what they know, they’ll like 2) who has the stars at starting quarterback, and 3) in this year with so much uncertainty, they’re vote for who has the most returning talent.

When the real thing comes out, we’ll break it all down and get more into it, but first, here’s the call on what the 2020 preseason USA Today Coaches Poll will be (number in parentheses is where team finished in final ranking).

Again, this is a prediction and not the real thing.
