Why the Curry Brand boldly brought back the Steph Curry signature shoe everyone mercilessly roasted in 2016

The Curry 2 is back and better than ever.

Steph Curry’s signature sneaker line got off to a great start in 2015 after the Warriors won the NBA championship.

But the very next year? Things took a bit of a left turn. Under Armour released the Curry 2 Low and the internet absolutely roasted them. Mercilessly. They didn’t hold anything back. It was an absolute moment — a funny one for the rest of us and a seemingly painful one for the shoe.

It couldn’t have been too painful, though, because Curry’s new brand brought the shoes back in a new, updated form on April Fool’s Day. The look is much sharper than before.

But the question is still why? Why bring this sneaker back after everyone completely ripped it apart? The Special Delivery team got a chance to unbox the shoes and chat with Steve Segears, a senior merchant on the Curry Brand team, to figure out why.

Here’s part of that conversation. Enjoy.

Report: Steph Curry signs long-term extension with Under Armour

The nine-time All-Star guard has inked a new long-term extension with Under Armour.

As Steph Curry has continued adding championships trophies, All-Star appearances, and different accolades on the court, the Golden State Warriors guard has donned Under Armour shoes on his feet.

The four-time NBA champ and reigning NBA Finals Most Valuable Player won’t be dropping UA from his feet anytime soon.

According to Nick DePaula of ESPN, Curry has signed a long-term extension with Under Armour. The new extension with Under Armour could become one of the “richest-ever” endorsement deals in sports, per DePaula. Along with inking a new deal with Under Armour, Curry will receive the title of president of the Curry Brand.

Via @NickDePaula on Twitter:

Curry originally signed with Under Armour in 2013, two-years prior to winning his first NBA Most Valuable Player award. Before inking his new long-term extension with Under Armour, Curry had one year left on his deal with the brand.

In 2020, Under Armour partnered with the nine-time All-Star to launch Curry Brand. During the 2022-23 season, Curry Brand released Curry’s 10th signature shoe with Under Armour.

On the court, Curry wears the Curry Flow 10 along with different retro releases and colorways of his signature Under Armour shoe.

High school freshman gets custom size 23 cleats from Under Armour

While that massive size gives him an advantage on the football field, it makes finding equipment that fits quite a challenge – especially footwear.

Goodrich High School (Mich.) 14-year-old freshman Eric Kilburn Jr. is as big as athletes come at his age, checking in at 6-foot-10. While that massive size gives him an advantage on the football field, it makes finding equipment that fits quite a challenge – especially footwear.

Kilburn wears a size 23 shoe, which you won’t find on display at Foot Locker or anywhere else, for that matter. He says it would mean everything just to get shoes that won’t give him blisters, per the New York Post.

“It means everything to me, just having shoes that don’t cause blisters or just pain on my feet would mean everything. It would mean the world… I just want shoes, there’s nothing else behind it. I just need shoes because once I grow out of these, I’ll have nothing to wear – no sandals, no crocs, no anything.”

Thankfully, Kilburn recently got an assist from Under Armour, who hooked him up with a custom pair of size 23 cleats. Watch.

Kilburn plays defensive tackle for his school, but he could only appear in three games this past season due to an ankle injury. Hopefully, the custom cleats serve him better than the size 22 basketball shoes he’s been wearing.

OU 2024 targets thrive at Under Armour Dallas camp, trending toward the Sooners

Oklahoma targets Michael Hawkins and Bryant Wesco had big days at the Under Armour Next camp in Dallas, and OU continues to trend in a positive direction for the four-star prospects.

Oklahoma’s top QB target and one of their top wide receiver targets in the [autotag]2024 recruiting class[/autotag] put on a show at the Under Armour Next All-America Dallas camp this past weekend.

[autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag], a consensus four-star QB prospect, took home the Accuracy Challenge award, while fellow four-star North Texas prospect Bryant Wesco took home wide receiver MVP honors.

Wesco dominated defensive backs with crisp routes, his size, and his ability to bring down any and everything that came his way. For both prospects, Oklahoma and TCU seem to be the top two schools in their recruitment.

Oklahoma and TCU will be on standby come April 8th as Hawkins plans to announce his commitment. Following his performance at UA Dallas Next, Hawkins received another crystal ball prediction in Oklahoma’s favor from Texas Insider Mike Roach on Monday.

Hawkins has 247Sports, On3, and Rivals, all projecting him to land with Oklahoma. Barring a surprise commitment between now and April 8th, Hawkins, if he chooses Oklahoma, will likely be their first commit for 2024.

On the other hand, Wesco seems like a recruitment that still has a little more time before it’s decided.

Like Hawkins, Wesco also received a projection in favor of Oklahoma following his performance in Dallas. Mike Roach also believes Oklahoma will land Wesco, giving the Sooners a four-star wide receiver to combine with potential four-star commit in Hawkins.

Roach joins OUInsider’s Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune in his projection of Wesco to Oklahoma.

With these new developments, Oklahoma could be on the cusp of announcing its presence on the recruiting trail for the class of 2024 in a big way. As recruitment of the 2023 class taught us, Oklahoma will run the whole race to the end. They will also strike while the iron is hot, like in the summer of 2022 when they reeled in 10 commits in 21 days.
