Watch new UGA quarterback D’Wan Mathis connect to star receiver George Pickens for a big first-down conversion here!

Georgia has a starting quarterback.

Coach Kirby Smart and staff elected to start redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis over USC transfer J.T. Daniels and he has shown some ability early on in the first half.

This particular throw to George Pickens may be a foreshadowing of things to come for the Bulldog offense :

Love how Mathis stood tall and got it to Pickens with not much room to work with; hopefully we get to see more of this moving forward!

Georgia football injury report for Week 1 matchup at Arkansas

Full injury report for Georgia football going into Game 1 against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The SEC kicks off its season this Saturday, officially ending the drought of college football.  The season has been delayed a few weeks and shortened to a 10 game, SEC only schedule due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Georgia last played on January 1st, defeating Baylor 26-13 in the All State Sugar Bowl.

The No. 4 Bulldogs, who have won the SEC East the past three years, play at Arkansas, facing off against former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman in his first game as a head coach for the Razorbacks.

Here are all the injury updates for the Dawgs going into Week 1.

PROBABLE: OL BEN CLEVELAND

Offensive lineman Ben Cleveland has been battling some ailments this offseason and is listed as probable for the Arkansas game.  Expect Cleveland to start at right guard for the Bulldogs on Saturday, bringing lots of veteran experience to the Georgia offensive line.

PROBABLE: WR KEARIS JACKSON

Wide receiver Kearis Jackson has had a rough go of it injury wise during his time in Athens.  He redshirted his freshman year due to a hamstring injury and was very limited in 2019, battling a broken hand and sprained ankle.  Jackson is a bit banged up coming out of preseason camp but can be expected to be starting in the slot for the Dawgs.  Look for Jackson to have a breakout season this year, taking some load off of sophomore wide receiver George Pickens.

PROBABLE: RB KENDALL MILTON

Freshman running back Kendall Milton has been dealing with a leg injury throughout preseason camp.  Milton went through most of camp in a black, non-contact jersey.  Milton, the California native, was a huge recruiting target for the Dawgs that helped secure their No.1 overall recruiting class for the second time in three years.  Zamir White and James Cook are healthy so we shouldn’t see too much of Milton this Saturday.

PROBABLE: RB KENNY MCINTOSH

Running back Kenny McIntosh is expected to to be involved in Saturday’s game in some capacity.  He has been dealing with an unknown injury during preseason camp, wearing a non-contact jersey for most of it.  McIntosh is expected to be the No. 3 running back for the Dawgs this season, backing up White and Cook.

QUESTIONABLE: ILB RIAN DAVIS

Rian Davis has been nursing knee and shoulder injuries since arriving in Athens last year.  UGA has six inside linebackers with defined roles in Monty Rice, Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, Channing Tindall, Trezmen Marshall (special teams), and Nate McBride (special teams).  Davis is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

QUESTIONABLE: WR TOMMY BUSH

Wide receiver Tommy Bush is dealing with an unknown injury that has forced him to miss a good chunk of the preseason.  Bush is a very talented receiver that can’t seem to catch a break with injuries.  He was sidelined for the majority of last season dealing with a sports hernia.  Bush is listed as questionable against Arkansas.

DOUBTFUL: TE TRE’ McKITTY

Florida State tight end transfer Tre’ McKitty left the field this preseason with a minor knee injury.  McKitty underwent an arthroscopic knee scoping and is expected to be back very soon.  Redshirt sophomore John FitzPatrick and  freshman Darnell Washington have been filling in on the first-team reps since McKitty’s injury.  McKitty is expected to have a huge year with the Bulldogs.

DOUBTFUL: QB J.T. DANIELS

USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels is still recovering from an ACL tear that he suffered last season with the Trojans.  Daniels is a former five-star recruit and has been ruled out for the Arkansas game.  Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis was given the nod as QB1 for Week 1.  Daniels is expected to return very soon and make for an interesting quarterback battle.

OUT: WR DOMINICK BLAYLOCK

Wide receiver Dominick Blaylock went down with an ACL tear during preseason camp.  Blaylock injured the same knee he hurt in the 2019 SEC Championship game against LSU. The sophomore was just getting back to full health when he devastatingly injured it again.  This is a huge hit to the Bulldogs pass game for 2020.

OUT: CB KELEE RINGO

The No. 1 cornerback in the 2020 recruiting class Kelee Ringo underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum before preseason camp.  The injury will force him to miss all of 2020, a tough loss for the bulldogs.  Georgia luckily has lots of depth at the position and will be alright defending the pass game without him.

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs are in Fayetteville this afternoon as they kickoff the 2020 college football season against the Arkansas Razorbacks at 4:00 p.m. EST on SEC Network.

D’Wan Mathis makes his first collegiate start under center for the Dawgs today, facing off against former Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks.  Former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman makes his head coaching debut for the Hogs, taking on his former boss Kirby Smart.

Georgia is favored in the matchup by 28 points.

Georgia football at Arkansas: Key player matchups

We take a look at some key player matchups to keep an eye on going into Georgia football’s season opener at Arkansas.

There is officially only one day until Georgia football returns for the 2020 season, kicking off in Fayetteville, Arkansas against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Dawgs are favored by a whopping 26.5 points (odds courtesy of BetMGM) but there are still some marquee matchups to be seen played out on the field this Saturday.

Georgia LB Nakobe Dean vs. Arkansas RB Rakeem Boyd:

Arkansas senior running back Rakeem Boyd has shown his ability to catch passes in the past, catching a total of 19 last season. The Razorbacks’ new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles will likely try and get creative with this matchup and get Boyd much more involved in the passing game.  Georgia sophomore linebacker Nakobe Dean will need to read Boyd and Briles well this game to not only contain Boyd as a rusher but also as a receiver.  Eliminating Boyd from this game will most likely paralyze Arkansas’ offensive scheme, and it all starts with Dean.

Georgia RB Zamir White vs. Arkansas LB Bumper Pool:

Georgia running back Zamir White is coming off of his biggest game in last years Sugar Bowl, where he rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.  White also has had a strong preseason camp, his knee looking as healthy as ever.  Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool has some great instincts at the linebacker position and is also a very solid athlete. He was second on the team in tackles and had five pass breakups in 2019.  White will open up a lot of options for Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken, forcing Pool to focus on the run game.  With the addition of junior running back James Cook, ready to take on a much bigger role with D’Andre Swift now in the NFL, Georgia’s running backs could be a matchup nightmare for the Hogs’ linebackers.

Georgia QB D’Wan Mathis and OC Todd Monken vs. Arkansas DC Barry Odom:

Georgia’s offense and Arkansas’ defense both feature a number of new faces this year.  There will be a lot of feeling the other team out early on in this game since neither side has had much of an opportunity to scout the other.  Monken is well know for taking advantage of mismatches so lookout for some deep balls thrown to sophomore wide receiver George Pickens in the Arkansas secondary.  Monken will also probably try and use Cook a lot in the short receiving game once Pickens starts to draw multiple defenders deep.  Georgia has the edge on paper here but they are still starting redshirt freshman quarterback in D’Wan Mathis, who no one has seen much of lately.  Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom will likely lay some early pressure on Mathis and the new Georgia offensive line.  Mathis and the Dawgs offense will need to stay poised and put trust in Monken’s play calling even if they take some hits early on.

Georgia’s secondary vs. Arkansas WR Treylon Burks:

Arkansas sophomore wide receiver Treylon Burks is a complete offensive Swiss-Army Knife.  He stands at 6-foot-3, 232 pounds and was used in the Arkansas run and pass game very well his freshman season.  He was the Razorback’s leader in receiving yards as a freshman but had no touchdowns.  Kendal Briles will definitely try and get Burks involved early with some big plays but he will need to get past a mean Dawgs secondary in Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, Mark Webb and DJ Daniel.  This should be one of the best matchups of Saturday’s game.

SEC Network commentators set for UGA at Arkansas

The Georgia Bulldogs will kickoff the college football season against the Arkansas Razorbacks. SEC Network TV commentators are set.

The Georgia Bulldogs will kickoff the college football season (assuming no COVID related cancellation) against the Arkansas Razorbacks this Saturday at 4:00 pm. Kirby Smart and the University of Georgia are traveling to Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium to face Sam Pittman and Arkansas.

Georgia will look to open the season strong. The Bulldogs are predicted to topple Arkansas, but Georgia should expect more fight from this year’s version of the Razorbacks.

The SEC Network commentators for the game are set. Dave Neal will handle the play by play and former Georgia Bulldog quarterback D.J. Shockley will be an analyst alongside Neal. Tera Talmadge will take care of the game’s sideline reporting in what should be a unique environment.

Georgia fans will be glad to hear a former Dawg and SEC Champion on the call against the Razorbacks.

SEC releases opening week schedule

The SEC has released the 2020 opening week schedule for the upcoming college football season.

The SEC has released the 2020 opening week schedule for the upcoming college football season. The Georgia Bulldogs will open the season against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Dawgs’ season opener will be a match up against former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman. Pittman is in his first year as head coach at Arkansas. UGA will travel to Arkansas.

Other interesting week one games include: Kentucky at Auburn, Mississippi State at LSU, and Tennessee at South Carolina.

Opening against Arkansas is an ideal game for Georgia. UGA’s first SEC game of 2020 was initially supposed to be against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fortunately, UGA dodges a bullet and will open with an Arkansas team who struggled mightily last year.

Georgia football staff loses another key member

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Arkansas Razorbacks. This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Following the departure of beloved offensive line coach Sam Pittman, now head coach at Arkansas, the Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Razorbacks.

This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Fernando Velasco, who played on the Dawgs’ offensive line from 2003 to 2006 and in the NFL from 2008 to 2016, joined his alama mater’s staff in 2016 as player relations coordinator. He was quickly promoted to director of player development, a position he held for the past three years.

He is the fourth staffer to follow Pittman to Fayetteville, joining special teams coordinator Scott Fountain along with strength and conditioning coaches Jamil Walker and Ed Ellis.

According to his twitter, he will maintain his position of director of player development for the Hogs.
