Chargers 2020 NFL Draft Target: UConn OT Matt Peart

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez puts UConn offensive tackle Matt Peart, a potential draft target, under the microscope.

Over the next few months, we are going to be taking a look at a handful of draft prospects leading up into the 2020 NFL Draft. With the Chargers having needs at various positions, we will do our best to evaluate the players that we feel fit the team precisely.

Today, we are taking a look at UConn offensive tackle Matt Peart.

Honors and Awards

  • First-team All-American Athletic Conference (2019)

Highlights

Strengths

  • NFL frame with outstanding arm length to initiate contact.

  • Quick initial set-up to cut off speed. Resets quickly to recover-and-counter after a rusher’s first punch/move.

  • Displays bounce in his feet to stay coordinated mid-shuffle – his hoops background is evident, rarely giving up the corner.

  • Good lateral quickness and able to race ahead of the pack on pull blocks and screens.
  • Good reactive athleticism to recover when beaten around the edge
  • Keeps his balance through contact and stays off the ground.

  • Rolls hips and drives his legs to uproot defenders as a run blocker.

  • Four years as starter at both left and right tackle.

Weaknesses

  • Play strength needs continued development. Not a powerful tackle and won’t generate much push as in-line blocker.

  • Technique is a work-in-progress.

  • Not a natural knee-bender, leading to pads and hips tending to rise off the snap.

  • Inconsistent hands, creating awkward positioning and allowing rushers to get inside his frame and bully him backwards. Shoots hands too soon.

  • Needs to do a better job locking out and sitting in his stance to maintain spacing.

  • Allows defenders to rip through his edge.

Summary

Peart, a four-year starter at UConn, is a good athlete that boasts terrific length. The 6-foot-5 and 310 pound tackle doesn’t have overwhelming power to dominate his opponents, but he quickly finds his landmarks and uses his natural movement skills, base and length to keep rushers busy. He is a plus run blocker, especially on stretch plays. The bottom line is that Peart isn’t an overpowering blocker, but he gets in the way and finds ways to keep defenders occupied, projecting as an eventual starter once his hand technique and functional strength improve.

Chargers Fit

Peart needs to add strength and work on his technique if he wishes to reach his play potential. But once he gets stronger and develops more of a mean streak, which shouldn’t take long, he has the physical traits to slide in at right tackle and start. That could come as soon as Week 1, Week 9 in his first year as a pro or Year 2.

Projection: Early-Mid 3rd

UConn basketball honors Gianna Bryant, who dreamed of playing there

The UConn Huskies paid tribute to the late Gianna Bryant, daughter of Kobe, who wanted to one day play there.

Gianna Bryant, Kobe’s daughter, died tragically this weekend along with her father and seven others aboard a helicopter that crashed outside Los Angeles.

She was 13.

Gianna was a budding basketball star. Her father coached her, and talked often about her winning mentality, as well as her evolving game. Gianna’s goal was to play for UConn, a goal that she and her father were working toward.

On Monday night, the UConn women’s basketball team honored her by setting aside a jersey and flowers on the bench in her memory before their exhibition game against Team USA.

The stadium also showed a tribute to Kobe and Gianna on the video board.

Folorunso Fatukasi took a major step in second year with Jets

Jets defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi improved drastically in his second season with New York.

Folorunso Fatukasi made a name for himself in his second season with the Jets.

After only playing three defensive snaps as a rookie in 2018, Fatukasi found a role in the Jets defensive line rotation as a sophomore. As Fatukasi was given more opportunities to play this past season, he couldn’t help but credit his teammates for helping him along the way.

“Just the opportunity I’ve been given, being able to do it here, at this moment, to be with these guys, I think it was just very special,” Fatukasi told the team’s website. “I enjoyed coming to work every day, being with the guys working, battling with them. And I believe that’s kind of fitting, to go through all that stuff with your brothers around you and be able to help produce. It feels good.”

Fatukasi was a sixth-round pick out of UConn in 2018. In 14 games this past season, Fatukasi produced 27 combined tackles, one sack and a pass defense. The numbers don’t jump off the page, but Fatukasi played an instrumental part in New York’s elite run defense.

Jets defensive line coach Andre Carter didn’t have a lot of film of Fatukasi from his rookie season. However, he noticed a major difference in his playing style in year two.

“Just attacking,” Carter said. “For Foley, it was a process, just like everybody else. But he started to see how good of a player he can be. We just continue to tell him to keep chopping wood as well as everybody else, keep playing good football.”

Now heading into his third season with Gang Green, Fatukasi will be looking for even more playing time. If he can improve on his numbers from this past season, the Jets may have found a diamond in the rough in the former sixth-round pick.

Indiana 78, Connecticut 66

Moneyline (ML)

INDIANA (-161) is worth a small-unit bet on the moneyline, but they’re a much better value when laying the points with the spread.

Against the Spread (ATS)

INDIANA (-2.5, -110) has covered five of the past seven games overall, and is 5-2 ATS in the past seven when installed as a favorite, too. Connecticut (+2.5, -110) is 4-1 ATS in the past five neutral-site games but is just 2-8 ATS in the past 10 as an underdog in neutral-site contests.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS (142.5). The total is going to be super close, and the trends are all over the board in this one. It’s all Over all the time for IU, going 7-2 in the past nine overall, and 5-1 in the past six neutral-site games when favored. The Under is 5-1 in UConn’s past six, and 5-2 in the past seven neutral-site affairs.

Jets add OL Ryan Crozier to practice squad

With Ryan Kalil’s season over, the Jets added OL Ryan Crozier to the practice squad. He started 12 games at center for UConn in 2018.

The Jets announced on Wednesday that they signed OL Ryan Crozier to the practice squad.

Crozier signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Connecticut following the 2019 NFL draft. He was waived with an injury designation following the preseason and eventually released with a settlement.

As a redshirt senior at UConn, Crozier started all 12 games at center for the Huskies. He helped the Huskies produce a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.

Crozier, 24, previously worked out for the Jets in October. He has never appeared in a regular-season NFL game. He will help add depth to the center position now that Ryan Kalil is on injured reserve and Jonotthan Harrison is starting at center.

Here is an updated look at New York’s practice squad:

  1. WR Jeff Smith
  2. RB Valentine Holmes (international)
  3. WR Josh Malone
  4. QB Mike White
  5. Bronson Kaufusi
  6. Corbin Kaufusi
  7. LB Ukeme Eligwe
  8. LB Jamey Mosley
  9. OL James Murphy
  10. OL Ben Braden
  11. OL Ryan Crozier

The Florida men’s basketball team began the season ranked No. 6 in the country just a few weeks ago. However, the good times would not last long, as the Gators already have 2 losses on the season to unranked opponents.

Though basketball is a marathon and not a sprint, dropping 2 of your first 4 games to unranked teams isn’t exactly the great either.

Following the road loss to UConn on Sunday, Florida fans took to Twitter to express their frustrations with coach Mike White.

Is it safe to say Florida fans don’t like Mike White?
