There are several key opportunities for a culling, some of which appear on our list of the week’s most watchable games. UCF Knights Preview 2022

Obviously the bar has been set higher now at UCF than to just go 9-4 with a bowl win, but all things considered, 2021 wasn’t all that bad.

Oh sure, there wasn’t an American Athletic Conference championship, and the program had to kick back and groove on someone else from the league breaking the ceiling and getting to the College Football Playoff, but really, how much fun did Cincinnati have being served up as a light scrimmage for Alabama?

And how much fun did UCF Nation have getting to chest thump after beating Florida 29-17 in the Gasparilla?

Again, it’s relative – and of course UCF would’ve loved to have been on the big CFP stage – but it was a bit of a transitional season, the offense was without its two backfield stars – QB Dillon Gabriel and RB Isaiah Bowser – for most of the season, and the team still found a way to win games.

But now the Gus Malzahn era has to kick in full-force.

Yeah, UCF lost two early road games to Louisville and Navy by less than a touchdown in each, but it also had to scratch and claw to get past East Carolina, and Tulane, and USF.

And it got blowtorched by Cincinnati and SMU. That can’t happen this year – especially with both of those battles at home.

This year’s team is loaded with veterans, ol’ Gus rocked the transfer portal for a whole slew of new parts to play around with, and the schedule is about as favorable as could be asked for.

So now it’s time to get everything in place in Year Two under Malzahn for when it really counts in Year Three.

The program that rose up into the FBS world in 1996, became a part of the MAC in 2002, Conference USA in 2005, and the American Athletic in 2013 will get a seat at the adult table in 2023 when it moves into the Big 12.

There’s no more Tulane, or Temple, or Navy. At least for a year, it’s going to be Oklahoma, and Texas, and Oklahoma State, and a chance to be a part of the system rather than have to rail against it.

But first, this year’s team should have the ability to close out its time in the AAC with one more championship.

There might not be the Notre Dame type of game like Cincinnati had last year to propel it into the College Football Playoff discussion, but it would be fun to be good enough to engage in that fight.

Don’t be shocked if this year’s team is able to do just that. But more realistically, getting to the AAC Championship game will do as a next step up under Malzahn.

No, 2021 wasn’t all that bad, especially if it sets everything up for a massive 2022.

Former Georgia Bulldogs OL announces transfer destination

Former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore offensive guard Cameron Kinnie has announced he will be transferring to UCF.

Former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore offensive guard Cameron Kinnie has announced his transfer destination. Kinnie is a former three-star recruit out of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia.

Cameron Kinnie is transferring to the UCF Knights. His transfer will help strengthen UCF’s offensive front. Kinnie joins another Georgia transfer, Divaad Wilson, on UCF’s roster.

Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is the head coach at UCF. Malzahn was fired up to land a commitment from Kinnie:

Kinnie redshirted the 2020 season and did not appear in a contest during the 2021 season. Kinnie primarily played on Georgia’s scout team. He was projected as a depth player again in 2022.

The former Collins Hill star is looking for more playing time at UCF and will stay close to home. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman has the talent to compete for a significant role with the Knights.

Kinnie signed with Georgia as a defensive tackle recruit in the class of 2020. He changed positions to the offensive line, but never saw the field. Georgia defensive tackles Nazir Stackhouse, Jalen Carter and Warren Brinson were also members of the class of 2020.

We wish Cameron Kinnie the best of luck at his new home. He thanked Georgia and announced his commitment to UCF via Twitter:

UCF Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Knights miss from the American Athletic Conference slate?

It’s an interesting final run in the American Athletic Conference for UCF, and it’s helped by not having to deal with a dangerous Houston team and what should be a plucky Tulsa.

There’s Cincinnati on the slate, and the possible first preview of the AAC Championship game is in the Bounce House. Again, though, missing Houston is the big deal because …

UCF Football Schedule What To Know: The AAC is going UCF a giant solid

Again, no Houston and Cincinnati at home are the two biggest plusses, but that’s not all. SMU is always dangerous – that’s a home game.

Navy is always funky with that offense – that’s a home game.

Temple has to be a layup at home, and East Carolina, Tulane, and USF are all very, very winnable road games. Yeah, three of the final four games are on the road, but Memphis is also gettable and that trip to USF is just down the road a bit.

In other words, the conference slate just isn’t that bad. And …

UCF Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The schedule isn’t really that bad.

UCF needs a few showcase wins over Power Five teams, and it’ll get a shot with Louisville and Georgia Tech at least bringing the big league brand to the show. Best of all, both of those ACC teams have to come to Orlando.

Throw in the date at Florida Atlantic, and UCF doesn’t have to leave the Sunshine State until October 22nd. Even better, there’s just the road game at East Carolina before the second trip outside of the state coming in November.

In all, UCF leaves Florida just three times. It’s a workable schedule if the team can come together fast.

5. UCF just flat-beat Florida

There wasn’t anything fancy about this.

Not dogging Army in any way, but it’s not like UCF ran some funky offense to beat an SEC team. It didn’t have some trick that Florida couldn’t figure out, and it didn’t do anything crazier than blocking and tackling better than the other side.

Yeah, Florida is in a transitional period, and yeah, this wasn’t anywhere near the team it was supposed to be after a decent start to the season, but it’s not UCF’s fault that the team with all the SEC talent couldn’t execute.

UCF outgained the Gators by 60 yards, it ran better, it made fewer mistakes, and it dominated the game in the second half.

UCF played like the Power Five powerhouse, and not like the team that struggled so much throughout the year. However …
