UCF vs SMU Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Give the Knights credit for battling back during a rough season after losing QB Dillon Gabriel early on. They’ve won three straight with the defense stepping up in a big way and with the passing game doing enough to get by.

It might not be pretty, and it might not be flashy, but RB Isaiah Bowser is running okay, the run defense has been terrific – it only struggled against Cincinnati – and now it gets to try powering away on the SMU D.

The Mustangs have mostly been okay against the run, but that’s because they’re getting destroyed through the air allowing close to 300 yards per game.

UCF won’t get that, but it’ll be effective.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why SMU Will Win

SMU might be able to bomb its way through.

UCF doesn’t have the same offensive explosion it normally does, and now it has to deal with a high-octane Mustang attack that’s going to throw better than anyone on the schedule so far.

SMU lost two straight, but Tanner Mordecai keeps on putting up numbers with 34 touchdowns on the year, lots of deep plays, and with the efficiency to keep things moving.

UCF can’t get behind in this, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The UCF pass defense has been terrific.

Again, that’s partly because it hasn’t faced a slew of high-end passing teams, but it held down Memphis with three picks in a win, kept Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder from doing much – at least through the air – and hasn’t allowed more than 215 yards in any of the last six games.

SMU will get this done thanks to a bit more offensive pop, but UCF will have its chances in the fourth quarter.

Tulane vs UCF Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

Is Michael Pratt back?

The starting quarterback practiced this week after being out for the Cincinnati game with a concussion, but he’s still questionable.

The running game was able to pick up the slack a little bit last week, and the defense was able to keep the team in the game until late. Now it all has to work together against a UCF team that’s starting to bounce back a bit.

The Knights don’t have the sure-thing explosion to end this with a huge start. The downfield passing game isn’t as strong, the consistency isn’t there, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why UCF Will Win

Tulane turns the ball over a whole lot.

It gave it up four times against Cincinnati, it has four games this season with four or more giveaways, and UCF might just need a few to be comfortable.

No, Mikey Keene might not be Dillon Gabriel quite yet, but he’s getting better and better with more work. He was sharp against Temple with five touchdown passes, his most accurate day of the season, and he got help from a defense that did its part with a second straight terrific performance after holding Memphis to seven points.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s just not Tulane’s year.

UCF doesn’t have to be spectacular in this.

It can rely on an improving defense that didn’t allow 300 yards in either of the last two games, the decent ground game should be more than serviceable, and there will be chances to come up with enough takeaways to make this comfortable.

UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Things aren’t going all that well if you’re getting whacked by 20 against USF.

Temple has had its moments – beating Memphis was stunningly nice – but it wasn’t even in the game against Cincinnati and it managed to be the FBS team to break an ugly USF losing streak.

The offense isn’t moving the chains, the defense can’t stop anyone from running, and UCF is about to make this as simple as possible.

The Knights came up with a very, very important win over Memphis last week to keep its bowl hopes alive, and they did it by blowing off the struggling passing game and running a finally healthy Isaiah Bowser for 111 yards.

Temple just gave up 421 rushing yards to USF after allowing 279 to Cincinnati.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Temple Will Win

So what’s going right lately for Temple? Not much, but the run D should be able to sell out with UCF not able to do much of anything with the passing attack since QB Dillon Gabriel went out hurt.

Mikey Keene is giving it the old college try, but there’s nothing happening down the field and he has five interceptions since taking over and just four touchdown passes. Joey Gatewood went 2-for-2 with a score against Memphis, but again, this UCF passing attack is a shadow of its former self.

Temple absolutely has to take the ball away. It’s two wins came in the two games it forced multiple turnovers. UCF hasn’t been that bad at holding on to the ball, but it gave it up three times against Cincinnati and twice to Navy in the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

UCF has yet to come up with a road win, but it was close in the losses to Louisville and Navy.

This is when the defense has to rise up to help the cause. Temple will be better than it’s been in a few weeks – the O will show a little balance – but Bowser will take over the Knight offense and the other side will be just good enough to get off the field on two key late Owl drives.

Memphis vs UCF Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

This isn’t the UCF team we were all hoping for at this point in the season.

The collarbone injury to Dillon Gabriel has totally derailed the offense and the season that started out with everything cranking up like normal. But after he got hurt, the O went from putting up over 500 yards per game to not getting to 360 in any of the last three.

Memphis has to take advantage of the lack of a downfield UCF passing attack. The Tiger O hasn’t been perfect, but the passing game is still solid, the attack is efficient, and the big plays should be there that we’re used to seeing out of the other side.

UCF doesn’t have enough of a pass rush – it was great against East Carolina, and that’s it – to bother rising freshman QB Seth Henigan.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCF Will Win

Grind … this … down.

No, the offense isn’t working because the passing game has gone bye-bye and the ground attack isn’t able to make up for it. However, there’s a way to pull this off.

Memphis can score quickly, but what it can’t do is keep its offense on the field.

It goes against the Gus Malzahn style and how UCF normally rolls, but ball control and long, sustained drives – if possible – are a must against a team that’s dead last in the nation in time of possession.

Memphis doesn’t force a ton of takeaways, it turns the ball over enough to matter, and it has the ball for about 25 minutes per game. UCF can’t let this game get bad early – it can’t come back. But if it can stay alive through the second half …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

18-to-23-year-old college kids don’t really get into the whole expansion thing, especially since that mostly effects things a few years down the road.

This could be one of those exceptions.

Memphis knows what a New Year’s Six game look like. It’s been in the American Athletic Conference title mix, and now it got passed over by the Big 12 for Houston, Cincinnati, and … UCF.

But the Bounce House is about to come through.

UCF is 0-3 on the road and 3-0 at home. Granted, two of those wins were with Dillon Gabriel – and one was against Bethune-Cookman – but it was able to get all ugly against East Carolina in a 20-16 win a few weeks ago, and that’s what it’s about to do.

Memphis will come in with an attitude, but that will start to wear off into the second half. It managed to lose to inferior Temple and Tulsa teams on the road by being a -5 in turnover margin, and this will be when the inability to take the ball away – without one in the last three games and no picks since the opener – will be a problem.

Cincinnati vs UCF Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Didn’t you used to be UCF?

One of the most dominant offensive powerhouses in college football over the last few years was rocking and rolling to kickoff the Gus Malzahn era, and then it all fell apart with the loss of QB Dillon Gabriel to a shoulder injury.

The O couldn’t get the job done against a punchless Navy team, but it was able to slug its way past East Carolina team with three takeaways and a solid defensive performance.

And that’s what it’s going to take.

Look, we’re all adults here – UCF isn’t about to face the third-best team in college football.

Cincinnati is obviously very good, and it could turn the lights out in a hurry if UCF gets down, but it’s stunningly bad on third downs, there’s no pass rush, and it does nothing to control the clock – and UCF can capitalize on all of that.

Malzahn and the coaching staff have to tweak and adjust.

The defensive front isn’t bad against the run, the backfield has some terrific runners – and could be a whole lot stronger if Isaiah Bowser can somehow get back from a leg injury – and the offensive line is talented enough to hold up. But …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Yeah, UCF is really banged up, and there’s still the question about the quarterback play.

Freshman Mikey Keene hasn’t been awful in his two games, but he’s a freshman, he hasn’t thrown for more than 200 yards, and he gave up a pick in each starting outing.

He can be decent for the UCF attack, but this isn’t a high-flying fun show that will throw any sort of a scare into the Bearcat secondary.

There isn’t the normal Knight downfield passing game to worry about, there’s not a whole lot happening in the backfield from the defensive front, and it shouldn’t take a whole lot of point to take a firm grip on the game.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UCF still has guys.

It’s a good enough team to rise up and come up with something special now that it’s in the role of the decided underdog. Malzahn has been in us-against-the-world games before, the lines should be able to hold up and make this a fight, and …

The Cincinnati secondary will take over just when it seems like UCF has a shot.

The Bearcats have NFL parts that can lock down, allowing under 50% completion on the year, allowing just three touchdown passes and picking off nine passes.

They’ll come up with two late takeaways to ease the pressure and allow Cincinnati to keep the dream going.

UCF Knights College Football Preview 2021: Offense

6-4 isn’t what UCF. is used to, but the offense was still amazing in what was supposed to be a rebuilding season overall.

Enter new head coach Gus Malzahn, and the offense that finished second in the nation in yards and eighth in points – cranking out 568 yards and 42 points per game – should be every bit as strong with eight starters expected back.

So what’s going to be different from the Josh Heupel era? Expect a bit more power to the running game, a lot more midrange throws, big things about to come from the tight end, and a bit more ball control.

QB Dillon Gabriel is back after throwing for 3,570 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four picks. McKenzie Milton left for Florida State, but there are a few nice backup options starting with redshirt freshman Parker Navarro. Now the receivers have to emerge.

Smallish, speedy Jaylon Robinson returns, and Ryan O’Keefe is a decent option, but the real pop could come from the transfer portal. Nate Craig-Myers went from Auburn to Colorado State to follow Malzahn to UCF. He’s a deep threat to go along with Brandon Johnson from Tennessee and former big-time Notre Dame get Jordan Johnson.

And there’s going to be work for the tight end now. The Knights have a slew of options to fold into the mix starting with former Wisconsin Badger Jake Hescock who caught three touchdown passes last year for the Knights.

All five starters are expected back on a line that was okay – not amazing – at keeping defenses out of the backfield. Senior guard Cole Schneider and center Matthew Lee are the stars of the bunch, but it’s a good line overall. Now the backs have to be there to block for.

Greg McCrae, Otis Anderson and Bentavious Thompson are gone. However, there’s a whole lot of speed and pop from Virginia transfer RJ Harvey – a quarterback who’ll likely be a running back – and Auburn’s Mark Anthony Richards to add even more pop. Sophomore Johnny Richardson needs the ball in his hands more, too.

This piece is almost certainly going to be wrong.

Two years ago we didn’t get Memphis – who ended up getting the New Year’s Six Bowl nod – and last season we weren’t even in the right zip code when it came to the rise of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

But we did have Cincinnati on the 2020 list.

So far in the College Football Playoff era, six teams from the Group of Five conferences – the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt – have been the highest-ranked conference champion in the final CFP rankings to get the New Year’s Six spot. None of them have been able to get into the playoff, but if the tournament expands, that will change.

Boise State beat Arizona in the first shot for the Group of Five, and Houston followed it up with a win over Florida State. Western Michigan, Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCF (twice) are the other schools to get the big spotlight game, going 3-4 overall and generally playing very, very well in the losses.

This year, the Group of Five champion – if it’s not in the College Football Playoff – will either play in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl or the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

So what does it take for a Group of Five program to get that New Year’s Six slot? Realistically – but not technically – 1) needs to go unbeaten or finish with just one loss, 2) it should have at least one signature win to impress the College Football Playoff committee that does the rankings, and 3), as part of the requirement, it has to win its conference championship.

Here’s hoping that a few teams will rise up and shock the world, but assume that one of these teams will likely have the best shot at getting the New Year’s Six nod.

Let’s start with a total cop-out.

College Football Group of Five Programs in the New Year’s Six Hunt

5. San Jose State at Nevada winner

CFN 2021 San Jose State Preview

Boise State is always the instant pick from the Mountain West to have a shot at the New Year’s Six bowl bid, but this year’s team is undergoing a coaching overhaul and it has a few tweaks it has to make, but there are three problems …

Non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule, non-conference schedule.

The Broncos should be strong enough in a relatively weak Mountain Division to get to the Mountain West title game, but they have to start the season at UCF, host Oklahoma State, and they have to go to BYU.

If they win all three they should probably be No. 1 on this list, if they win two of the three they’ll be in the hunt, and if they win just one, forget it. Throw in the road games at San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State, and it’s a tough ask.

CFN 2021 Nevada Preview

From the West, Fresno State will be dangerous, San Diego State always has a puncher’s chance to get to the NY6, and Hawaii will be plucky, but it should – like last year – come down to the showdown between San Jose State and Nevada.

The Spartans have to go to USC, but they other three non-conference games are against Western Michigan, New Mexico State and Southern Utah. If they’re good enough to win the Mountain West title, they’ll be good enough to win all three of those.

They don’t have to play Boise State and get San Diego State and Fresno State at home. However, they start November with a trip to Reno.

The Wolf Pack are loaded with high-octane offensive talent, the overall experience is in place, and the coaching staff is hitting its stride. They have to at least split the road games against Cal and Kansas State, and they follow that up with a trip to Boise State. Throw in road games at San Diego State and Fresno State, and there’s a problem.

However, get by San Jose State, go on to win the Mountain West title, and they should be in the hunt.

Auburn or Gus Malzahn? The Athletic answers who makes playoff first

Auburn or Gus Malzahn: Who will make the College Football Playoff first?

Since its inception in 2014, Auburn has yet to make the College Football Playoff. The Tigers’ closest call came in 2017 when a victory in the SEC Championship Game would have put them in the final four.

After eight seasons under Gus Malzahn, the Tigers are now led by Bryan Harsin while Malzahn landed a job at UCF, a perennial Group of Five power.

So, with that in mind, someone named Brian S. (and no, it wasn’t me) wrote into The Athletic’s ($) mailbag to ask who makes the playoff first between the Tigers and their old coach. Steward Mandel answered the question.

Fascinating question. Tough one to answer, though, given we don’t know when it’s going to start. Will Malzahn still be at UCF in 2026? Will Bryan Harsin still be at Auburn? Who the heck knows?

The safe bet, though, is Auburn, just because the Tigers are going to have more margin for error. For UCF to make the Playoff, it’s probably going to have to both win the AAC and, most years, be ranked higher than any of the other Group of 5 champions. Whereas Auburn could go 9-3, finish third in the SEC West and, depending on what that 9-3 looks like, make the CFP as an at-large team.

Over the past 40 years, Auburn has not gone more than four years without at least one nine-win season. The Tigers have been highly erratic and yet highly predictable. Whereas I can’t begin to predict what UCF’s trajectory will be under Malzahn.

Who knows, maybe a matchup between Auburn and a Malzahn-led UCF is in the future for the playoffs. That would be some storyline.

Auburn Spring Practice: Can the Tigers find a dominant defensive line?

Here are the Tigers projected to fill the positions on the defensive line.

The last few months have been chaotic for every aspect of Auburn football, especially the Tigers’ defensive line. New defensive line coach Nick Eason comes to Auburn after spending a season coaching the Cincinnati Bengals’ d-line. Eason steps in to replace Tracy Rocker who left after just 11 days for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The hardest task that lies ahead for Eason and DC Derek Mason is replacing two of the line’s biggest contributors from last season in defensive end Big Kat Bryant and defensive tackle Daquan Newkirk.

Bryant left Auburn to originally follow Kevin Steele to Tennessee but finally ended up at UCF with former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. He finished last season with 15 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception. Newkirk transferred to Florida and finished last season with 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Mason typically runs a hybrid defense that alternates between three and four man fronts. Here are the Tigers projected to fill the positions on the defensive line:

Defensive tackle:

Todd Van Emst/AU Athletics

Dre Butler 6’5, 304 lb junior

  • 2020 stats: 14 tackles, 1 sack
  • Butler transferred to Auburn from Independence Community College in Kansas where he recorded 66 tackles, 22.0 TFL, and 11.5 sacks

Lee Hunter 6’4, 300 lb freshman

  • Senior statistics at Blount High School (Mobile, AL): 54 tackles, 20 TFL, 4.5 sacks
  • 4-star recruit with high praise for his strength and athleticism along all aspects of the line

Jay Hardy 6’4, 300 lb redshirt freshman

  • 2020 stats: early season leg injury sidelined Hardy throughout season, saw action in one game against Northwestern
