UCF Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Knights miss from the Big 12 slate?

Welcome to the Big 12, UCF. Here’s your gift …

You don’t have to play Texas or TCU.

Texas is going to be a whole lot better, and TCU played for the national title. They’re off the original new conference slate, and so is BYU.

That’s not a bad thing, especially considering a trip to Provo – if that was going to be the game – would’ve been a problem. Missing Iowa State isn’t great, though, even though it’ll be improved.

UCF Football Schedule What Really Matters

The Knights are getting hit with five Big 12 road games including both Kansas teams. Combine that with the date at Oklahoma, and they get the bad break of playing three road games in four conference dates.

Easing the pain a bit is a week off before playing the Sooners, but it still means they’re only in Orlando once between September 23rd and the end of October.

UCF Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Even with the five Big 12 road games and a date at Boise State in non-conference play, it’s still one of the easiest schedules of any Big 12 team.

There’s no game outside of the Big 12 against a Power Five program, and getting Kent State and Villanova are easy ways to gear up for what’s coming. Combine that with home games against West Virginia and Houston, and there should be a solid base of wins to build from.

It’s not all going to be easy. Those road dates at Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech should be just enough to keep UCF from cranking out a massive season, but again, compared to other Big 12 teams this isn’t bad.

2023 College Football Schedules: All 133 Teams

Record predictions 1.0 for all Big 12 football teams

There could be plenty of parity in the Big 12 conference football standings.

At long last, the Big 12 schedule is official for all 14 teams. The schedule is more favorable for some than others.

The Oklahoma Sooners certainly had a good draw in what could be their final Big 12 season. They avoid road trips to Kansas State and Baylor, both of which defeated them in Norman last season. In addition, they avoid the surging Texas Tech Red Raiders who they lost to at season’s end.

Oklahoma State has an unremarkable schedule as well. The Cowboys face all four of the conference’s new additions, avoiding TCU, Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech.

TCU faces one of the more difficult conference slates. The schedule sees the Horned Frogs play Kansas State, Texas Tech, Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma consecutively.

After picking each game, here are my initial record predictions for the conference.

Duke 30, UCF 13 Military Bowl What Happened, What It All Means

Duke 30, UCF 13: Military Bowl what happened, player of the game, and what it all means

Duke beat UCF to win the Military Bowl. What happened, who was the player of the game, and what does it all mean?

Military Bowl What Happened

Duke had no problems moving the ball on a depleted UCF defense. QB Riley Leonard ran for two touchdowns, Jaquez Moore starting the scoring with a 14-yard dash, and Todd Pelino hit three field goals. The Blue Devils were up 20-7 at halftime and 23-7 before UCF got back on the board.

Isaiah Bowser ran for two short touchdowns for the Knights – tying it at seven in the first quarter and closing out a long drive in the fourth – but the offense couldn’t stay on the field long enough. Two turnovers – especially a fumble by QB John Rhys Plumlee – turned the tide.

UCF fought the good fight. It was missing a slew of key players on both sides of the ball – especially on defense – and Duke had just about everyone available. It showed – the Blue Devils were far crispier offensively and looked like the regular season self on defense.

Military Bowl Fun Stats

– John Rhys Plumlee was a bit questionable before the game, but he battled through hitting 21-of-34 passes for 182 yards with an interception and fumble and ran for 21 yards on 14 carries. Isaiah Bowser led the team with 39 rushing yards and two scores.

– Sacks: Duke 6 – UCF 0. Duke LB Cam Dillon led the team with nine gables and a game-high two sacks

– Time of Possession: Duke 34:28 – UCF 25:32

Military Bowl What It All Means

It might have been among the most underappreciated stories of the 2022 season – Duke was fantastic in Mike Elko’s first season. It only lost four games with three of them by three points or fewer, and the other a 35-27 fight against Kansas when it was rolling at the time.

This was the program’s first winning season since 2018 and the first nine-win campaign since 2014. It was also the first bowl appearance since 2018, and with the victory Duke has won four straight since 2015.

This wasn’t really a fair representation of UCF. It was missing way too many important parts on both sides of the ball, but it was still a good effort and is still closed out the program’s fifth season with nine wins or more in the last six. With the loss, though, that makes it five bowl losses in the last eight and took Gus Malzahn’s bowl record to 3-6.

New Big 12: Where each team ranks in the 2023 recruiting class

UCF has fared better than half the Big 12 in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The Big 12 is improving in talent acquisition. That much is evident by the TCU Horned Frogs meteoric rise and recent elite portal additions.

The league adds four new teams. As of Dec. 22, all of the league’s additions belong in the new-look conference. UCF, Houston, Cincinnati and BYU all produced recruiting classes worthy of their newfound Big 12 designation.

Texas, Oklahoma and TCU lead the pack as usual on the recruiting trail. However, Texas Tech and Baylor have upped their performance in the 2023 cycle.

UCF surprised as a better than average performer among the league’s anticipated 14 teams. Leveraging their brand power with their new Big 12 schedule, the Knights impressed with their 2023 class.

Here’s a look at where each team ranks in On3 Sports’ 2023 consensus team rankings.

What to watch with the Longhorns’ 2023 football schedule

The Big 12 schedule will look a lot different in 2023.

With 2022 coming to a close, we eagerly look forward to the 2023 Big 12 Conference schedule release. While the schedule was once designated to be announced on December 1 or mid-December it appears the Big 12 Conference is kicking the can down the road.

Four teams are set to join the conference for the 2023 season. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF may all want a piece of Oklahoma and Texas, at least for national exposure. That said, plenty of the current members of the league would welcome the opportunity to defeat their rivals one more time.

It’s fair to assume Texas will play its usual in-state foes. TCU and Baylor would likely readily host the Longhorns in front of a rabid home crowd.

Let’s examine what we can anticipate from the schedule.

Former Georgia DB declares for NFL draft

UCF defensive back Divaad Wilson, a former Georgia Bulldog, has declared for the 2023 NFL draft.

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Divaad Wilson has declared for the 2023 NFL draft. Wilson transferred from Georgia to UCF to be closer to home following the 2019 college football season.

Wilson additionally had an impressive season at UCF back in 2021, when he recorded 71 tackles and intercepted two passes.

The former Georgia defensive back has the talent to play at the next level.  UCF football plays Duke in the Military Bowl on Dec. 28.

Wilson announced that he will be entering the 2023 NFL draft via Twitter. He thanked both Georgia and UCF in a nice statement.

Divaad Wilson had one year of remaining eligibility.

Georgia football flips former UCF OT commit

The Georgia Bulldogs have added a commitment from talented offensive tackle recruit Jamal Meriweather.

The Georgia Bulldogs have added commitment No. 23 to the class of 2023. Georgia recently added a commitment from five-star pass rusher Samuel M’Pemba. Now, Jamal Meriweather has flipped his commitment from UCF to Georgia.

Meriweather is ranked as a three-star offensive tackle prospect. He is the No. 605 recruit in the class of 2023 and the No. 46 player at his position. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive tackle is the No. 54 recruit in Georgia.

The three-star offensive tackle is the third three-star recruit in the class of 2023 that’s currently committed to Georgia. Meriweather plays football for Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Georgia.

The UCF Knights have the No. 56 recruiting class in the senior class.

Jamal Meriweather says that he is shutting down his recruitment and intends to sign with Georgia. The Bulldogs have the second-ranked class of 2023 in the nation. Georgia is only behind Alabama.

Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searles has helped the Bulldogs land commitments from three-star offensive guard Joshua Miller, four-star offensive guard Kelton Smith, four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling, and now Jamal Meriweather.

The Brunswick star announced his commitment to Georgia football via Twitter:

Tulane RB Tyjae Spears hurdled his own teammate, escaped so many tackles on ridiculous 60-yard TD

Hurdle!

The Tulane Green Wave won the AAC championship game in style on Saturday.

In a stunning highlight, Tulane running back Tyjae Spears scrambled for 60 yards for a hard-earned touchdown. On the play, Spears broke multiple tackles and read the field beautifully to reach the end zone.

However, the best part of the play wasn’t even the touchdown itself. Spears had to hurdle his own teammate, wideout Lawrence Keys III, on the play en route to the score.

A friendly fire hurdle hasn’t ever really been common in football. However, Spears probably knew his teammate wouldn’t mind being hurdled if it got the Green Wave six on the scoreboard.

Tulane’s 45-28 victory over UCF helped cement what’s been a spectacular season for the Green Wave.

Bowl-bound, No. 18 Tulane will now look to hurdle any team that it might face off against as it vies for a new trophy to add to its cabinet of accomplishments.
