Bills re-sign Tyrel Dodson to one-year deal

#Bills re-sign Tyrel Dodson to one-year deal (despite his goodbye to Buffalo):

The Buffalo Bills have re-signed a middle linebacker, but the one that was second on their depth chart.

The team announced that Tyrel Dodson re-signed with the team. It’s a one-year deal.

Dodson, 24,  originally came to Buffalo as an undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M following the 2019 NFL draft.

Despite going undrafted, Dodson did have a productive college career.

In 2017 in particular, Dodson had 104 total tackles, including 10 for loss, 5.5 sacks, eight passes defended and three interceptions in 13 games played. His stats dropping the following year led to his draft status declining.

The real issue for Dodson began after the draft. He eventually was suspended for six games due to a domestic situation off the field, but prior to that he was coveted as a special teamer and depth player which stuck through his suspension.

Dodson eventually joined the practice squad and then the active roster. He has played in 16 contests in each of the past two years as Dodson has become a staple on the roster. Dodson rose to become the main backup to Tremaine Edmunds at middle linebacker.

In that No. 2 role, Dodson made three starts last season. He also appeared in 67 percent of special teams snaps on the year.

With Edmunds departing Buffalo for the Chicago Bears, Dodson would slide in as the starter on the Bills defense for the time being. It’s likely that a player will be added to that mix, whether that be a veteran free agent or competition via the 2023 NFL draft. There’s also 2023 third-round selection Terrel Bernard to consider.

Easily the most interesting part about Dodson returning is the previous goodbye he tweeted to Buffalo earlier this offseason:

Regardless of farewells, Dodson is back.

A decision which makes a ton of sense post-Edmunds.

Bills vs. Browns: 3 key matchups in Week 11

#Bills vs. #Browns: 3 key matchups in Week 11:

The Buffalo Bills will faceoff against the Cleveland Browns in their Week 11 matchup which was relocated to Ford Field.

Even with it being a moved showdown, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Browns clash:

Former Aggies Von Miller and Tyrel Dotson shining in Buffalo

Former Aggies Von Miller and Tyrel Dotson shining in Buffalo

In Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season, two former Aggies – Tyrel Dodson and Von Miller – made the lengthy list of great performers in the Buffalo Bills’ route of the Kenny Pickett-lead Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Highmark Stadium.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Dodson played sparingly for the Bills’ defense, registering only 13 defensive snaps through Week 4, but took full advantage of a 63-snap defensive day where he registered 11 total tackles (7 solo) and a sack.

Von Miller on the other hand, averaging 35 defensive snaps per game through five weeks, recorded his third game with at least one sack (second consecutive game, as well) and puts his season total to 4.0 sacks.

The Bills have a highly anticipated showdown versus Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, in Arrowhead, on Sunday at 4:25PM ET on CBS.

Instant analysis: Bills make easy work of Steelers in Week 5 victory

Instant analysis: #Bills make easy work of #Steelers in Week 5 victory (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills apparently had enough of close games, playing in contest that were decided by less than a field goal over the previous two weeks.

Buffalo (4-1) made easy work of the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-4) going into halftime with a four-touchdown lead and ending the game with 38-3 victory.

The game started in an inauspicious manner for the Bills, as their first drive started on their two-yard line following a fumble on the opening kickoff by Taiwan Jones. Instead of this being a harbinger of bad news, it ended up leading to a play that tied the longest play in Bills history.

On third and ten, Josh Allen hooked up with Gabriel Davis on a 98-yard touchdown reception:

The Bills offense was stellar in the first half, connecting on seven big plays of 20 yards or greater. Khalil Shakir, Quintin Morris, Isaiah Hodgins, and Devin Singletary also added big plays in the first half.

Allen threw four touchdown passes in the half, connecting twice with Davis, while Stefon Diggs and Shakir added scores. Davis’s second touchdown reception might have been the play of the year, somehow outdoing his initial touchdown with this stellar one-handed grab:

Allen put up stats reserved for Madden, throwing for 324 passing yards and the aforementioned four touchdown passes in the first half alone. Davis went into the break in high style as well, with 160 receiving yards on two touchdown receptions.

Allen finished with a career-best 424 passing yards. It was a good day for the MVP candidate.

The Bills defense kept Kenny Pickett in check all game. The rookie had brief flashes showing why he was a first-round pick in April’s draft for the Steelers.

However, Pickett was overwhelmed by Buffalo’s defense. Even without Tremaine Edmunds, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, and Tre’Davious White, Buffalo’s defense dominated the rookie. Buffalo rushed to the ball consistently reducing any shot of a run after catch to basically nothing.

The Bills continued to get pressure with their front four, leaving little room in the secondary for Pickett to find any holes in zones. Pickett, for his part, did stand in and face the pressure fairly well for his debut.

Tyrel Dodson did well in place of Edmunds, recording 11 tackles on the game. Von Miller and Dodson recorded sacks during the game as well. Kaiir Elam, while having struggles during the game, did record his first NFL interception.

The second half was largely a snoozefest, as both teams played a conservative half of football. Buffalo relied on the big play in the first half, and they just rode out the time in the second half. James Cook added the first touchdown by a Bills running back this season to the scoring ledger, scurrying for a 24-yard rush to put the Bills up by 35 in the fourth quarter.

The Bills did add some excitement prior to a mini-scuffle that occurred late in the third quarter. Damar Hamlin put a hit on his former college teammate Pickett as the quarterback slid after a scramble. While the hit was deemed legal, a pair of Steelers earned personal fouls for late hits while defending their quarterback.

While the game was in hand by halftime for Buffalo, it’s important to examine the few struggles that the Bills had in the game. Jones’s fumble was the first worrisome moment. Elam had some struggles in coverage.

Tyler Bass had a kick blocked, and it didn’t even look like it had a shot coming off his foot. Buffalo’s play calling got a little cute, as a shovel pass to Quintin Morris ended up with a turnover, as Morris fumbled into the end zone, which was recovered by the Steelers.

This game showed that if the Bills offense is firing on all cylinders, it will be nearly impossible for opponents to contain them. The old guard will say that this team looks like the Super Bowl teams of the 90s. In fact, this rendition of the Bills might be even better.

Buffalo travels to Kansas City next Sunday for a possible preview of the AFC title game. The Chiefs entered Week 5 atop the AFC West standings.

Tyrel Dodson had perfect Madden 23 troll on Bills teammate Isaiah McKenzie

All in good fun:

Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie was none too happy with the ratings he received in the upcoming edition of the NFL video game, Madden 23.

McKenzie posted to his social media account on Twitter to complain a bit. He said “I can’t catch a break around here” in his message:

Then came the fun part via linebacker Tyrel Dodson.

The Bills defender and special teamer saw McKenzie’s message. Instead of reassuring McKenzie that Madden got it wrong, he added to it with a hilarious response.

Dodson added that McKenzie’s “hygiene” rating was only 15 overall.

Ouch–But you got to give it up for Dodson’s joke. It was a solid one. McKenzie eventually replied that Dodson is “in trouble starting 7/24,” the date the Bills reported for training camp.

Buffalo Bills linebacker Terrel Dodson is going to do his best AJ Klein impression at training camp.

Earlier this offseason, Klein was released in a salary cap move by the Bills. But for the past two seasons, Klein and Dodson were teammates in Buffalo and without the veteran in the fold anymore, Dodson knows there’s an opportunity for him.

And the way he’s going to attack it is how Klein would.

“A.J. Klein was a perfect example,” Dodson told the Buffalo News. “The last two years, I’ve basically been watching A.J., watching everything he does, his preparation. Sometimes throughout the week he looked at Mike (position) one day. He looked at Will and Sam the other days. He really split them up well. He compartmentalized his preparation. I watched him like a hawk.”

Dodson, like Klein, has the skill set to potentially backup both Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano, Buffalo’s starting linebackers on defense. Without Klein in the fold, Dodson acknowledged it’s a chance for him to “step up.”

However, there’s also Terrel Bernard to consider. The Bills’ third-round rookie, Bernard will also be in the linebacker room with Dodson.

The way things might work out is Dodson backing up Edmunds and getting on the field if the Bills decided to run a play with a third linebacker. Bernard might be better suited for the No. 2 spot behind Milano.

Why? After being drafted by Buffalo, Bernard admitted he modeled his game after Milano.

“You’ve seen a shift in the NFL the last few years, the kind of run and chase style [of linebacker],” Bernard said in April. “It’s been crazy being able to model my game after guys like Matt Milano, he’s probably one of my favorite players I’ve been studying.”

Still, the Bills aren’t just going to let anyone slide into a position without earning it. Possibly because of that, Buffalo defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said during minicamp that Dodson is going to be expected to know multiple linebacker positions.

“He’s going to have to do what A.J. Klein did for us the last couple years – be that guy who can back up all three positions,” Frazier said.

Fine by Dodson.

“You just have to stay ready so you don’t have to get ready,” Dodson said.
