WATCH: Texas ex Ty Madden dazzles in professional debut

Ty Madden is terrorizing hitters in the professional ranks.

Ty Madden is picking up right where he left off in college and is terrorizing opposing hitters in the professional ranks.

The former Longhorn ace made his first career minor league start on Sunday with the Western Michigan Whitecaps. The Whitecaps are the High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

Madden settled down quickly after surrendering a leadoff home run. The power righty hit 99 mph with his fastball to end the first inning with a strikeout.

Ty was in total command of the game from that moment on. Madden finished his outing totaling four innings pitched, just one hit, one run and one walk. He flashed his vintage high spin rate fastball and wipeout slider to tally six strikeouts on the afternoon.

Madden had an All-American season for the Longhorns in 2021. He guided the Horns to and Big 12 championship and College World Series appearance.

Texas pitcher Ty Madden selected in the first round by the Detroit Tigers

Ty Madden was selected in the first round of the MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers. He becomes UT’s first opening-round pick since 2013.

Going into Sunday night, Ty Madden was considered a top prospect on the board for the 2021 MLB draft. The Texas starting pitcher was one of the best in the country, leading the Longhorns to Omaha.

In ESPN’s final mock draft, Madden was projected to go No. 11 overall to the Washington Nationals. After throwing 113.2 innings with a 2.45 ERA and 10.8 K/9, he finished as a D1Baseball All-American.

Madden slid into the competitive balance portion of the first round, the Detroit Tigers ended his long wait at pick No. 32. He becomes the first Texas player in the first round of the MLB draft since Corey Knebel in 2013.

Detroit has now taken three college starting pitchers in the first round over the past five seasons. Alex Faedo came out of Florida (2018), while Casey Mize (Auburn) was the No. 1 overall pick in 2019.

College pitchers have a history of making it to the majors quicker thanks to their progressed development. According to MLB.com, Madden is a 55 overall prospect out of 80. His fastball and slider are rated the highest at 60.

Madden will officially join the Tigers’ organization this summer.

Five Texas baseball players who rank among the NCAA’s top 50

Five Texas Longhorn baseball players who rank nationally among statistical categories.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team is 30-8 on the season and continues to ride a 13-game winning streak. They’re currently ranked No. 3 nationally and sit atop the Big 12 with slight leads over Texas Tech and TCU.

The Longhorns look more and more like a squad who will be competing in Omaha for the NCAA College World Series. Just as impressive has been the play of many of their players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few of these Texas stars could be playing in the minor and major leagues in the coming years.

At the beginning of the season, all eyes were on pitcher Ty Madden and his elite strikeout numbers. More recently, the focus has shifted to Ivan Melendez, who had garnered attention after six consecutive games with a home run. Melendez eventually fell just short of tying the NCAA record at eight games.

Texas currently has five players among the top 50 in their respective statistical group, with a few others who are narrowly on the outside looking in. With 17 games left in the regular season, many of these numbers are likely to fluctuate.

Here are the five Texas players who rank among the the top 50 statistically via NCAA.com.

Texas Baseball: Ty Madden among top pitchers in the nation

Texas Longhorns pitcher Ty Madden jumps in the top three leaders in strikeouts after his performance vs. South Carolina.

The Texas Longhorns won game one of their series last night vs. South Carolina by a score of 4-1.

Texas pitcher Ty Madden, the star of the game, has been on a tear early in this season.

Madden pitched 7.0 innings and only allowed 3 hits in the outing. Even more impressive, was his five strikeout performance, which gives him a total of 30 on the season.

Madden is one of the few pitchers in college baseball with 30 or more strikeouts and after his strong outing last night; he sits tied for third in the country in strikeouts.

Only Justin Campbell (32) from Oklahoma State and Hunter Stanley (31) from Southern Miss have more so far this season.

At this rate, Ty Madden’s MLB draft buzz will continue to rise. He’ll likely be on many All-American ballots and up for the school’s first ever National Pitcher of the Year award.

Madden has only pitched 20.0 innings thus far this season, and is likely to pass 50.0 at the rate he’s going. Don’t be surprised if Madden surpasses 60 strikeouts before the postseason begins.

The No. 21 Texas Longhorns (7-5) played a three-game series against the Houston Cougars (7-4) this past weekend, where Texas won two of three contests.

The first two games were split between both schools and were fairly low scoring. The Longhorns won game one by a score of 1-0 behind a stellar performance by Texas pitcher Ty Madden. The Cougars stole game two with a walk-off in extra innings to end the game 3-2. Game three, however, not only gave the Longhorns a series win, but they defeated Houston in dominant fashion 8-2.

In game one, the lone run for Texas came from a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning. The star of the game was pitcher Ty Madden (2-1) who pitched a complete game, giving up only two hits and a career-high 14 strikeouts.

In game two, Houston took an early 1-0 lead run in the bottom of the second, but Texas would rally behind an Austin Todd single and score a run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The game stayed tied with two runs each, which forced extra innings until Houston’s Tyler Bielamowicz ended the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

With the series tied at 1-1, Texas looked to close out the series strong on Sunday. Unlike the first two contests, game three didn’t come down to the wire as the Longhorns blew out the Cougars.

As a team, the Longhorns had seven hits on 31 at-bats (.226) in game three, highlighted by Trey Faltine who was .500 for the day with 2 RBI’s and a one-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the cherry on top.

Kolby Kubichek (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings on Sunday, allowing only two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

The Longhorns will host a one-game series against Sam Houston State on Tuesday. They’ll then begin an important three-game series against No. 12 South Carolina on Friday in Austin.

Texas Baseball: Longhorns fall to Mizzou in controversial fashion

The Texas Longhorns finished up the final game of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children College Classic in controversial fashion, losing 9-8.

In the final game of the College Baseball Classic at Minute Maid Park, the Texas Longhorns and former conference foe the Missouri Tigers met for some Sunday afternoon baseball. Coy Cobb was on the mound for the Longhorns looking for the team’s 11th win through 12 games.

Early on the Longhorns found themselves playing from behind before they even got their opportunity to bat. Cobb gave up a run on a wild pitch and throwing error before retiring the side. The Longhorns bats wouldn’t come to life until the bottom of the fourth inning with the Tigers leading 2-0. With Cam Williams standing at third base, Eric Kennedy drove him in for the Longhorns first run of the game. In the top of the next inning, the Tigers extended the lead back to two with a Pete Zimmerman solo shot. His second RBI of the game, he ended with three.

In the bottom of the inning Texas would respond. With the bases full of Longhorns, first baseman Zach Zubia would be hit by a pitch to drive in Lance Ford. Williams would walk on four straight pitches to tie the game up at three. Eric Kennedy hit into a fielder’s choice that drove in Duke Ellis. Texas led 4-3 after five. Cobb’s day would be done on the mound, giving way to Kolby Kubichek.

Kubichek threw just 12 pitches to record one out and gave up three earned runs. Zimmerman singled in a run to make the score 8-4 Tigers after five and half innings. Tristan Stevens would relieve Kubichek with less success. Couldn’t record a single out on 11 pitches and gave up the run on the Zimmerman hit.

The Longhorns fought and clawed their way back into the game, closing the gap to 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth. Zubia drove in a run on an RBI single. The seventh run came on a wild pitch that allowed Ellis to score. In the top of the ninth the Longhorns gave up another unearned run on their fifth error of the game. It would be the eventual winning run. The controversy came in the bottom of the ninth with winning run on first base.

In the final pitch of the game with runners on the corners and two outs, Duke Ellis was at the plate with an opportunity to be the hero in Houston. Austin Todd was on first following a RBI single to bring the Longhorns within one, with a 1-2 count, Ellis took the pitch for the called third strike. The Missouri catch did his job with framing the pitch to get the ball.

This loss was a punch to the gut after a weekend of questionable calls. Texas will now face Arizona on Tuesday before a weekend series with Cal State Fullerton.

Longhorns Baseball: Texas-sized upset over No 6 Arkansas

Madden pitched six innings throwing 100 pitches. He finished with seven strikeouts, giving up three earned runs. Quality start from the Longhorns number two starter.

Cole Quintanilla lasted just 0.1 innings after giving up two runs allowing Arkansas to get within three runs of Texas after holding a commanding 8-0 lead. Pete Hansen came into the game and shut it down over the next 1.2 to get the game to the ninth. Hansen struck out two batters and allowed just one hit.

It was up to freshman pitcher Andre Duplantier II to close it out in the final inning for Texas to pull off the upset. Duplantier gave up two runs on a Matt Goodheart double that brought the Razorbacks within one, and the tying runner standing at second. The freshman rose to the challenge and got the final outs when Duplantier struck out Casey Opitz and Casey Martin to close the door.

Texas improved to 10-1 on the season. Zubia led all hitters with three RBIs while batting 3-4. The Longhorns look to close out the weekend against another former conference rival in the Missouri Tigers.
