Zulgad: Examining the future for the Vikings’ final five picks in the 2022 draft

With their rookie season over, @jzulgad examines the performance of the final 5 picks and what their expectations should be for next season

In the first part of this series, we examined the top five picks in Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s first draft as the Vikings’ general manager.

Adofo-Mensah received criticism for not getting more from that class of 10 players selected over seven rounds. Safety Lewis Cine (first round), cornerbacks Andrew Booth Jr. (second round) and Akayleb Evans (fourth round) all had injuries that ended their seasons.

Right guard Ed Ingram (second round) and linebacker Brian Asamoah (third round) struggled in a starting role and saw a surprising lack of playing time, respectively.

But how about the back end of the draft class and their prospects for 2023? Let’s take a look.

Vikings Report Card: Grading the Vikings 2022 Rookie Class

We took a look at all the Vikings rookies in 2022 and give them a grade for their performance.

The Minnesota Vikings had ten draft picks in their 2022 draft class, and they were able to get some meaningful snaps from some of those players.

While it’s unlikely that rookies will come in their first season and make an immediate impact, it’s good to reflect on where the rookie class is after one season.

It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t fully form your opinion until they have at least three seasons under their belt. It’s a real adjustment.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how all the draft picks did this past season.

These 50 Vikings players are under contract for 2023

The Vikings currently have 50 players under contract going into the 2023 offseason

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has a lot of work to do this offseason to get the Vikings roster under the cap and ready to go for the 2023 season.

There is a lot of talk about impending free agents and potential cap casualties for the Vikings this offseason, but not so much about the other players that are under contract.

According to Over The Cap, the Vikings have 50 players currently under contract and sit $23,051,507 over the projected salary cap. Here is all 50 players under contract with the details of their current contracts.

Vikings designate Cameron Dantzler and Ty Chandler to return from IR

Good injury news for the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are getting healthier each week and the cornerback room is about to get some much-needed fortification. On Wednesday morning, the Vikings designated cornerback Cameron Dantzler and running back Ty Chandler to return from injured reserve.

The move opens up the 21-day practice window for both players before they must be added to the active roster or placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

Dantzler suffered a high ankle sprain against the Washington Commanders in week nine and was placed on injured reserve quickly thereafter.

Chandler broke his thumb in the Vikings’ week five game against the Chicago Bears. He didn’t see any snaps on offense but was a key special teamer.

Dantzler is expected to play on Sunday against the Detroit Lions and Chandler’s timeline is still unknown.

RB Ty Chandler to IR: Sign DB Theo Jackson from Titans PS

The Vikings made two roster moves on Tuesday

The Minnesota Vikings were likely to have a roster spot open up after injuries that occurred this past Sunday against the Chicago Bears. That happened on Tuesday when the Vikings placed rookie running back Ty Chandler on injured reserve.

Chandler suffered a broken thumb that head coach Kevin O’Connell said would keep him out for an extended period of time. His going on injured reserve was expected and the addition of a position other than running back also makes a ton of sense, as carrying four tailbacks was more to keep Chandler in the building than anything.

Rookie cornerback Akayleb Evans also entered the concussion protocol on Sunday and with his fellow rookie Andrew Booth Jr. still missing time with his quad injury, adding another defensive back makes the most sense.

Jackson was a sixth-round pick in 2022 by the Tennessee Titans out of the University of Tennessee. He is a slot/safety hybrid that has some athletic upside. Shaun Calderon of Titans Wire gave a good synopsis of Jackson on draft day.

He will provide needed depth as the Vikings get the secondary back to full strength.

Vikings RB Chandler breaks thumb: CB Evans in concussion protocol

Two Vikings rookies suffered injuries on Sunday that could keep them out awhile

The Minnesota Vikings found a way to beat the Chicago Bears by a score of 29-22 despite blowing an 18-point first-half lead. Cameron Dantzler saved the day with a strip of Ihmir Smith-Marsette to seal the win for the Vikings.

Unfortunately, the Vikings didn’t escape the game without injuries. While the injuries weren’t to starters, they will be impactful on the depth of the team.

Both injuries happened to rookies, as running back Ty Chandler broke his thumb and cornerback Akayleb Evans is in concussion protocol.

Chandler was playing in just his second game of his young career only getting snaps on special teams. He had a great preseason for the Vikings and there was hope that he would get some playing time this year. He will miss a significant amount of time.

Evans has gotten playing time this season and has played well overall. He did leave the game with the injury and his status will be monitored moving forward.

Vikings rookie report: How is the 2022 class doing so far?

Despite not seeing much of this year’s rookie class this year, there shouldn’t be any concern that they aren’t making a big impact yet

The Minnesota Vikings rookie class has been a major cause for discussion over the first few weeks. The main reason? We haven’t seen a lot of this class thus far.

What does this mean? Well, each player either playing or not playing is its own story. Context is the most important thing when discussing the rookie class, especially after only three weeks. The Vikings are 2-1 so it’s hard to fault them for the approach they have taken.

Let’s take a look at what each rookie has done thus far and why their accomplishments are what they are.

Predicting the 6 Vikings inactives for Week 2 vs Eagles

Here are our predictions for the Vikings inactives on Monday night

Last week, the Minnesota Vikings didn’t have any surprises with their inactive list. They prioritized keeping rookies on the sidelines and they only had one player miss the game due to injury.

As the Vikings approach Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, the injury report is minimal with only three players on it and only one truly questionable at this point..

Here are the six projected Vikings inactives for Monday nights game.

Lewis Cine headlines Minnesota Vikings inactives

The Vikings first-round pick leads the Vikings inactive list

Heading into the Minnesota Vikings week one matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the injury report was minimal. The one major question mark was rookie first-round safety Lewis Cine who had aggravated a previous knee injury and was seen at practice with an ice wrap.

When the official inactive list came out, Cine led the way with only five other players joining him in not playing against the Packers.

There really aren’t any major surprises on this list with four of them being rookies selected at the end of day three or undrafted. Seeing Chris Reed on the list is somewhat of a surprise but the Vikings feel comfortable with their depth outside of the former Indianapolis Colt.

The Vikings hope to have Cine back for next Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
