Presidents Cup: Final day schedule and how to watch

Can Team USA stage a comeback in Australia?

Team USA cut its deficit at the 2019 Presidents Cup on Saturday while Tiger Woods kept himself on the bench for both sessions, but the Americans will have to stage a Sunday comeback in singles play at Royal Melbourne Golf Club if they hope to retain the cup.

For the final day, every member of each team will face off in singles matches. Winning a match will earn a point, while a match that ends in a tie after 18 holes will earn each team a half point. The International team needs 5.5 points from the 12 singles matches to win.

Team International leads Team USA 10-8.

Either team needs 15.5 points to clinch the Presidents Cup.

Televised coverage of the Presidents Cup final day will begin Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. You can stream the Golf Channel online via NBC Sports Live, or via fuboTV.

Swimmers reach shore just in time after shark siren blares

Swimmers in Cape Town, South Africa, headed for the beach in a hurry when the shark siren blared. They reached shore just in time.

It might not have rivaled the “get out of the water” scene of “Jaws,” but swimmers at Fish Hoek Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, headed for the beach in a hurry, some faster than others, when the shark siren blared. And they appeared to reach shore just in time.

Aly Ison captured video of the moment after Shark Spotters sounded the alarm and moments later also recorded footage of the actual shark close to shore.

[protected-iframe id=”1e1af44d4ca6cab67e21cc1133bfb893-58289342-9134387″ info=”https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Faly.ison.9%2Fvideos%2F2481223998820086%2F&show_text=0&width=560″ width=”560″ height=”315″ frameborder=”0″ style=”border: none; overflow: hidden;” scrolling=”no”]

“When the shark alarm goes off and you actually see the shark,” Ison wrote on Facebook. “The Shark Spotters do an amazing job spotting the sharks in the bay. This one appears to be a bronze whaler.”

The Shark Spotters confirmed it was, indeed, a bronze whaler, a.k.a. a copper shark, according to The South African.

Fish Hoek Beach is about a mile long and is protected from currents and strong surf as it sits within False Bay. Shark Spotters are often on duty and when they sound the alarm, the locals know the drill, especially considering there were fatal shark attacks in this bay in 2004 and 2011.

Usually when a shark is spotted, officials can deploy exclusion barriers to protect the swimmers in the bay, but “due to fishing activity in Fish Hoek corner” they couldn’t be activated, The South African reported.

Oregon vs. Michigan

  • When: Saturday, December 14

  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Saturday will be the first time the two schools have played since No. 3 seed Oregon beat No. 7 seed Michigan 69-68 in the Sweet 16 of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Oregon (7-2) cruised to an 89-64 victory against Hawaii last Saturday with five players scoring in double digits. Guard Payton Pritchard led the way with 20 points (8-for-11) and 11 assists, while forward CJ Walker had 18 points in just 22 minutes. Walker, a freshman, got the start due to an injury to Shakur Juiston, who will not suit up vs. Michigan. Pritchard opened the half with back-to-back three-pointers to start a 20-1 Oregon run and the Ducks never looked back, outshooting Hawaii 66.7 percent to 33.3 percent in the second half.

Things didn’t go Michigan’s way on Wednesday, losing 71-62 to Illinois, marking the team’s first Big Ten loss this season. Jon Teske scored 16 points, while Eli Brooks and Isaiah Livers each scored 12 points. Senior leader Xavier Simpson struggled on the night, scoring just nine points in 36 minutes. The Wolverines (8-2) were unable to find much success against the Illinois defense, shooting only 17 percent from 3-point range. Michigan was also thoroughly outworked under the basket, with Illinois scoring 44 points in the paint to Michigan’s 26.

How to Watch Army vs. Navy, NCAA Football Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch Army vs. Navy Live Online.

It’s as American as it gets. The 121st edition of the Army vs. Navy game takes place on Saturday in Philadelphia. It marks the final regular-season football game of the season, as is the tradition. The uniforms, the chants, and the intensity makes the rivalry unlike any other. Last season Army got a 17-10 win, it’s third straight between the service academies. Before that, Navy had won 14 straight meetings.

Army vs. Navy

When: Saturday, December 14

Time: 12:00 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

No. 23 Navy has returned to its winning ways after a surprising 3-10 record last year. The Midshipmen (9-2) have scored a combined 91 points over their last two games, including a 56-41 win over Houston on Nov. 30. That win helped them secure a bid in the Liberty Bowl against Kansas State on Dec. 31. Navy’s offense is centered around its running game. Jamale Carothers rushed for 188 yards on 18 carries against Houston and had a remarkable five touchdowns. Dual-threat quarterback Malcolm Perry totaled 146 yards on 18 carries, along with one touchdown.

With new defensive coordinator Brian Newberry at the helm, Navy has changed its defensive schemes. The Mids are 15th in rushing defense (up from 90th in 2018), 24th in third-down conversion defense (up from 121st) and total defense (24th, up from 86th). The defense’s 63 tackles for a loss (it had 37 all last year) are the most by a Navy team since 2008.

After an impressive 47-6 win against VMI on Nov. 16, Army (5-7) suffered a crushing 52-31 loss to Hawaii on Nov. 30. to make them ineligible for a bowl game. Just like Navy, Army relies heavily on its rushing attack that wears down opponents. The Black Knights had three players rush for over 85 yards against Hawaii. The leading rusher was quarterback Christian Anderson, who ran for 114 yards on 12 carries. Sandon McCoy ran for 91 yards and scored two touchdowns. Surrendering 52 points to Hawaii was quite a shock considering the team had combined to allow just 13 points in the two previous games against UMass and VMI.

Real Sociedad vs. Barcelona

Before the November international break, there were a lot of questions about Barcelona heading into a brutal three-week schedule that would make or break the team’s season. Barcelona needed to win every game to not only prove how good it is, but to stay alive in the league and in Europe. And boy is the team answering the call: Barça has won all five games in that brutal schedule. Now Barça has a chance to separate itself from Real Madrid by beating the team in El Clásico next Wednesday.

Before that, though, Barcelona has to travel to Anoeta Stadium to face Real Sociedad, a team enjoying a fantastic start to the season that could end with a Champions League bid. It wasn’t long ago that Barça fans knew this was a loss because the Catalans went 10 years without a win away to Sociedad. Now they’ve won the last three to fully break the “Anoeta Curse”, but they haven’t faced a Real Sociedad team this good in a long time. Both teams love to attack. Sociedad is quite good at home, but Barça is on fire and looking for a big win before El Clásico.

The New York Jets (4-11) face a tough road test this week when they head to Baltimore (11-2) to take on a red hot Ravens team. New York won the first meeting 19-16 in overtime in 1996 and 24-16 in 2016, the last time these two teams played.

Jets vs. Ravens

Time: 8:20 p.m. ET

TV: FOX

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

After losing 22-6 to the Bengals to give them their lone win of the season two weeks ago, the Jets bounced back with a narrow 22-21 win over the Dolphins. The victory at home gave New York its third win in four games. Sam Darnold completed 20 of 36 passes for 270 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Le’veon Bell was too sick to play, which allowed Bilal Powell to get the start. Powell carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards, while Robby Anderson led the team with seven catches for 116 yards and one touchdown. Bell believes he isn’t getting enough touches this season, so it will be interesting to see his role in the offense over the next three games.

In last week’s win, the Jets were able to keep the Dolphins out of the end zone and held them to seven field goals. However, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick totaled over 300 yards of offense. Defensively, the Jets trail only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when it comes to stopping the run. New York is holding opponents to an average of 78.8 YPG and will face its toughest test of the season against the NFL’s best rushing attack led by Lamar Jackson and Mark Ingram.

The Baltimore Ravens have accepted every challenge thrown their way this season and the Jets should be no exception. Offensively, the Ravens are posting an average of 408.2 yards per game, with a league-leading 200.9 YPG on the ground. Baltimore has won eight games in a row including back-to-back games against the 49ers and Bills. Lamar Jackson threw for 145 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the 24-17 win in Buffalo. He also added 40 yards on the ground to bring his total to 1,017 and join Michael Vick (2006) as the only quarterbacks to rush for 1,000 yards in the season. However, Buffalo’s defense proved that the Ravens can be stifled. Baltimore’s 118 yards on the ground and 257 total yards were both season lows.

Championship teams find ways to win and that’s exactly what the Ravens have done in back-to-back weeks. The defense stepped up and did what it needed to do as well. Josh Allen was sacked six times and Buffalo was held to just 209 yards of total offense, its lowest on the season. Matthew Judon paved the way with five tackles and one-and a half sacks.

Presidents Cup: Day 2 schedule and how to watch

Can Team USA overcome a 4-1 deficit from Day 1?

Despite the brilliance of team captain Tiger Woods, who earned Team USA its first point in the 2019 Presidents Cup, the American team fell in a huge hole during Day 1 of the competition in Australia, losing four of five matches to the International team.

Play will resume on Friday in Melbourne, Australia – Thursday night in the United States – with five foursomes matches. Woods will return to the course with playing partner Justin Thomas, but the captain has switched up a few of his other pairings and brought two players off the bench.

If you’re unfamiliar with the different formats used in golf’s team events, foursomes is a two-on-two competition where players on each team alternate shots.

Team International leads Team USA 4-1 through one day of play.

Televised coverage of the Presidents Cup will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. You can stream the Golf Channel online via NBC Sports Live, or via fuboTV.

Top-10 highest paid college football coaches

Who is the highest paid coach in college football?

College athletics is a multibillion dollar industry with huge amounts of money falling into the pockets of just about everyone involved — except the players actually participating.

Coaches’ salaries continue to climb, the base amounts are approaching eight figures and the bonus opportunities now written into contracts seem endless. Through the 2019 conference championship weekend, head coaches at FBS public schools have earned nearly $9.5 million in bonuses so far, according to USA TODAY Sports.

For example, LSU coach Ed Orgeron has already earned $1.05 million in bonuses on top of his $4 million annual salary. By beating Georgia in the SEC championship game, he earned $425,000 in bonuses: $200,000 for the Tigers winning the conference championship and another $225,000 for the team making it to the College Football Playoff.

And there’s even more money on the table if he continues winning. He’ll receive $150,000 for winning a playoff semifinal game — LSU plays Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl — and could get $500,000 with a national championship.

Also, because so many coaches are employed by public universities, the highest paid public employee in 39 states is either a college football or basketball coach, according to ESPN.
