5 takeaways from Day 1 of the NFL Combine

Takeaways from Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

We have officially reached the NFL Scouting Combine with the defensive linemen and linebackers kicking off the weekend’s event at Lucas Oil Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The importance of the combine is more for the medicals and team interviews but the testing does help confirm what you see on tape or it may force you to go back to take a look because a prospect performed better than expected or fell short of expectations.

With Chris Ballard’s love of the trenches and ability to find linebackers via the draft, odds say that some of the prospects that were on the field on Thursday will be back on it in the fall.

Here are the five biggest takeaways from Day 1 of the NFL combine:

6 standout performers from NFL Scouting Combine DL, EDGE and LB drills

Day 1 of the NFL Scouting Combine had the defensive line, edge rushers and linebackers working out. These 6 players stood out in a big way.

When the 200+ NFL Draft prospects get their invites for the NFL Scouting Combine, they know the opportunity that lies ahead. They have the chance to showcase their athleticism and football IQ in front of all 32 teams.

The best part of the combine is seeing the prospects that use this opportunity to boost their draft stocks and earn some money on draft day.

On Thursday, the defensive linemen and the linebackers took center stage in Indianapolis and put on a show for the coaches and scouts in attendance. Some players separated themselves from the rest of the pack with their testing results. We give them their flowers in this exercise.

2024 Scouting Combine: Which DL, EDGE, and LB helped themselves the most?

Which edge-rushers, defensive linemen, and linebackers helped themselves the most in the scouting combine drills? We have the answers here.

INDIANAPOLIS — For some draft prospects, the scouting combine on-field drills are mere confirmation for NFL teams looking to add a bit to positive tape study and personal interviews. For others, it’s a bigger deal, as great numbers might have some personnel people going back to that tape to see what they might have missed the first time around.

On Thursday afternoon and evening, we saw the defensive linemen, edge defenders, and off-ball linebackers do their thing on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. While a lot of prospects acquitted themselves well, here are the ones who did the most to stand out, and to potentially see their stocks rise through the next two months before the 2024 NFL draft is in the bag.

366-pound T’Vondre Sweat wowed fans with an unbelievably fast 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL combine

This was AMAZING!

T’Vondre Sweat is now a household name if he wasn’t before.

The defensive tackle out of Texas weighed in at 366 pounds at the 2024 NFL combine, proving he could be a solid man in the middle for whoever drafts him in April.

But the 6-foot-4 showed off something else on Thursday: An UNREAL 40-yard dash. He ran it in 5.27 seconds, which is faster than you and I could do it (note: I ran it in 2018 for this website, and I was nearly a second slower!).

The NFL world was amazed by the run, as you can see by the reaction below:

This is the same dude who caught a touchdown in the Big 12 title game, which makes this triply awesome.

NFL Combine preview for Texas football players

Several Texas players can raise their draft stock at the NFL combine.

The NFL combine is under a week away, and several Texas Longhorns football players have plenty to gain at the showcase. The team has 11 players set to compete in a series of events that give tangible measurements on players’ athleticism.

The combine is set to take place Feb. 26-March 4. Defensive tackles and linebackers start competing at 2 p.m. CT on Feb. 29. Defensive backs and tight ends will compete on March 1, quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers will participate March 2 and offensive linemen will take part on March 3.

Defensive tackles T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy will join linebacker Jaylan Ford on Feb. 29 with high stakes on the line. Ford was thought to be the best prospect of the bunch heading into the season, but Sweat and Murphy have become early potential picks in their own right.

Wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell have plenty on the line in the showcase. Worthy will have an opportunity to separate from the pack with a strong 40-yard dash time. His draft position could rely heavily on it.

Mitchell, who many view as a potential first- or second-round draft pick, can confirm positive views about his ability with a good showing in early March.

Texas will look to put up several draft picks in its best NFL draft class in recent memory.
