Tulane football hilariously had Aaron Judge’s 62nd home run interrupt its uniform reveal

Well played, Tulane. Well played.

While Aaron Judge was undoubtedly the biggest winner from Tuesday night’s American League record-breaking home run, college football fans everywhere could not be more thrilled to see the home run chase come to an end.

Throughout last Saturday’s college football action, fans watching games on the ESPN networks had to deal with live look-ins of Judge’s at-bats only to watch teams pitch around the Yankees slugger. The look-in decision took no consideration to regional rooting interests — everyone *needed* to see Judge’s at-bats as they happened. That included a game between Tulane and Houston.

But leave it to Tulane to keep the joke going with elite content.

Tulane was ready to unveil the week’s uniforms for Saturday’s game against East Carolina, but the wait would have to continue because Judge’s 62nd home run got in the way. They cut the video short to show a replay of Judge’s home run.

It was an excellent take on the Aaron Judge meme that fans had created this past week, and everyone seemed to love Tulane’s effort.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022

Last year was weird.

This was a rock-solid .500 ball club over the previous four years under Willie Fritz with three bowl appearances and some good moments, but the 2021 version fall apart.

Lots of turnovers, too many misfires, bad defense, inefficient offense, poor caddying. Last year was when the program was supposed to be hitting its stride, and instead it totally flopped.

But Fritz is an excellent head coach, there’s too much experience and talent in place to have another off year, and there should be a bounce back into a winning season and bowl appearance as it prepares for a new world next year.

The school is sticking around the American Athletic Conference, and it’s about to be a whole lot easier without Houston, UCF, and Cincinnati around.

Seven years into the Fritz era the program isn’t exactly rebuilding, but this is the season to reestablish itself before looking to be more of a power player in 2023.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022: Offense

Turnovers. No, the passing offense wasn’t good enough, but it wasn’t awful. No, the rushing attack didn’t dominate, but it wasn’t bad. The offense averaged 387 yards and 28 points per game, and it needs to be far, far better after only hitting 30 points once in the last ten games.

The turnovers killed any and everything the team tried to do. More on that in a later blurb. On the plusside …

The offense gets nine starters back. The offensive line has four decent starters and enough depth to be okay. It has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but there’s experience around Sincere Haynesworth at center and Joey Claybrook at left tackle.

The running backs are deep. Tyjae Spears is a quick speedster who averaged 6.7 yards per carry with a team-high 863 yards and nine touchdowns, Cameron Carroll is more of a pounding option, and on the way is Ashaad Clayton from Colorado to potentially take over in the rotation.

Michael Pratt did what he could last year. The sophomore quarterback ran for five touchdowns and threw for close to 2,400 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight picks, but he struggled to keep the chains moving.

The receivers are there to do a lot more. Jha’Quan Jackson is a dangerous deep threat, Deuce Watts is a strong, reliable veteran, and Tyrick James is a solid tight end who led the team with 429 yards and four scores.

Tulane Green Wave Preview 2022: Defense

The defense didn’t do a whole lot to help out the offense. It was a disaster against the decent passing teams, struggled against the run, and allowed 34 points and 428 yards per game.

It got ripped to shreds by Ole Miss, Oklahoma, East Carolina, and SMU, but there were problems against just about everyone. The 5.81 yards per play allowed were the most since 2017, but with seven starters back and a slew of good pass rushers, things should be better. At least that’s the hope.

Darius Hodges led the team with 16.5 tackles for loss to go along with five sacks. The star defensive end flirted with the transfer portal, but he’s back. He’s the best of the bunch up front, but the linebackers are going to be the other main playmakers. Nick Anderson was a good tackler and made a whole lot of plays behind the line, and Dorian Williams is one of the AAC’s best middle linebackers.

The line needs 6-1, 300-pound Adonis Friloux to be more of an anchor on the nose. Losing Jeffery Johnson to Oklahoma stinks, but Patrick Jenkins if coming in from TCU to be a part of the rotation on the end.

The pass defense was a problem. It was helped by a great pass rush, but it still wasn’t enough to come up with enough stops against the great passing teams on the slate.

However, there’s talent in the secondary starting with Macon Clark, the leading tackler with 74 stops and four picks at one safety spot. The corners have to start taking the ball away, but everyone can tackle.

Memphis vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

It’s been a lost season, but a win over Memphis to play the role of spoiler will have to do for something positive.

A two-game winning streak to close things out wouldn’t hurt after rocking USF 45-14.

It’s been a rough run, but there have been a whole slew of positives with a good pass rush, a whole slew of decent battles, and now it’s time to turn it all loose against a very, very shaky Tiger team.

Memphis has lost three of its last four, the running game is missing, and the offense as a whole has only hit 350 yards once in the last four games. Tulane has to control the tempo and the clock with its own ground game, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Memphis Will Win

Tulane just can’t score.

Oh sure, it ripped up a bad USF team with 45 points, but before that it hadn’t scored more than 13 points in a game for three straight losses, and it hadn’t hit the 30 mark since Week 2 of the season.

The Memphis offense might not be able to run all that well, but this is the chance to get it all going. Tulane can get behind the line, but it also gets gashed in chunks if a team can commit to the ground attack.

Memphis far better home run hitting capabilities.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis will finally get that win needed to go bowling.

It’s going to be a fight, and it’s not going to be able to breathe easily until the final drive and the final stop, but it’ll get the win with the defense holding up through the second half after struggling early on.

Tulane will bring the production, but it won’t be sustainable.

USF vs Tulane Game Preview

Why USF Will Win

The team is playing better.

It might be 1-4 over the last five games, but the four losses – including against Cincinnati and Houston – were were good battles. The passing game picked up over the last few weeks, the running game has had its moments, and the there are signs of life in a building year for 2022.

Tulane’s offensive line isn’t doing much of anything in pass protection, and on the flip side, USF’s line is doing a decent job of keeping everyone in the backfield clean. The Bull front five doesn’t allow a ton of sacks or tackles for loss, and again, it’s decent enough to generate a push for the ground game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Tulane Will Win

It’s a brutally painful year for the Green Wave – they have yet to beat an FBS team – but the defense stepped up in losses to UCF and Tulsa, and the team is still putting up a good battle.

The offensive line is having problems, but USF doesn’t generate any semblance of a steady pass rush. As long as Michael Pratt can get a little time to work, there’s a wee bit of passing game that was there before dealing with Cincinnati, UCF, and Tulsa over the last three weeks.

USF might be playing better overall, but it’s not moving the chains consistently enough and the secondary can get torched – it gave up close to 700 yards through the air over the last two weeks.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane’s offense isn’t working – 13 points or fewer in the last three games – and USF’s defense is having problems with 99 points allowed in the last two.

The offense should be able to perk up for the Green Wave, but USF is playing better overall.

The Bulls are going to look a whole lot stronger now that they’re not playing Houston and Cincinnati.

Tulsa vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane showed against Cincinnati just how good they really are.

They might be in the midst of a losing season, but they’ve been able to battle hard in way too many close games. Yeah, winning the tight ones is part of the deal, but four of the six losses were by a touchdown or less.

Cincinnati is supposedly a College Football Playoff-level team, and the Tulsa running game ripped through it for close to 300 yards.

The combination of Shamari Brooks and Anthony Watkins was fantastic against the Bearcats, QB Davis Brin got the team into a position to potentially pull off the shocker, and the O is there to bother a leaky Tulane defense that …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Tulane Will Win

The D stepped it up over the last few weeks.

A major problem over the first half of the season – Ole Miss, East Carolina, and SMU combined for close to 2,000 yards of offense – the Green Wave D was solid against the run against Cincinnati and UCF, keeping both games close. UC pulled away late, but that was a fight in a 31-12 loss.

The offense might be struggling, but that’s partly because QB Michael Pratt has been hurting – he missed the Cincinnati game and was just okay against UCF. As long as the offense can be just a wee bit balanced, and if it can avoid giving the ball away …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers are a major problem for both teams.

Tulane has turned it over ten times in the last five games and Tulane killed itself with four giveaways against Cincinnati. They’ll both make mistakes, they’re both having a rough time getting their respective seasons going, and …

Tulsa, for all of its problems, will pull this off, beat Temple next week, and at the very least will go into the SMU game with a shot at getting bowl eligible. The running game will take over against the Golden Hurricane.

Tulane vs UCF Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

Is Michael Pratt back?

The starting quarterback practiced this week after being out for the Cincinnati game with a concussion, but he’s still questionable.

The running game was able to pick up the slack a little bit last week, and the defense was able to keep the team in the game until late. Now it all has to work together against a UCF team that’s starting to bounce back a bit.

The Knights don’t have the sure-thing explosion to end this with a huge start. The downfield passing game isn’t as strong, the consistency isn’t there, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why UCF Will Win

Tulane turns the ball over a whole lot.

It gave it up four times against Cincinnati, it has four games this season with four or more giveaways, and UCF might just need a few to be comfortable.

No, Mikey Keene might not be Dillon Gabriel quite yet, but he’s getting better and better with more work. He was sharp against Temple with five touchdown passes, his most accurate day of the season, and he got help from a defense that did its part with a second straight terrific performance after holding Memphis to seven points.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s just not Tulane’s year.

UCF doesn’t have to be spectacular in this.

It can rely on an improving defense that didn’t allow 300 yards in either of the last two games, the decent ground game should be more than serviceable, and there will be chances to come up with enough takeaways to make this comfortable.

SMU vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

So why is everything going so wrong?

There’s talent on Tulane, it was able to push Oklahoma early on, and there hasn’t been a whole lot of luck or fortunate breaks.

What’s going so wrong? Five tough games – at Oklahoma, at Ole Miss, UAB, at East Carolina, Houston. The Green Wave should’ve been able to hang with ECU a bit better and should’ve beaten Houston, but to be very, very, very fair, the program had hurricane issues to deal with over the first part of the season.

There’s enough of an offense to keep up against SMU.

The Tulane pass rush has the talent and pop to bother Tanner Mordecai and the SMU passing game that gets the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and the Green Wave passing attack will hit at least 200 yards against an SMU secondary that had issues with just about everyone who could throw.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why SMU Will Win

Mordecai has been just that good.

The former Oklahoma quarterback had a few interception issues – he threw three against TCU and two against North Texas – but he’s also hitting 71% of his passes and two or more touchdown passes in every game.

No, Tulane isn’t getting a whole lot of luck, but it’s not creating its own positivity, either. It’s getting destroyed in turnover margin – giving it away three times or more in three of the six games and being a -7 overall.

And yeah, playing Oklahoma and Ole Miss will skew the stats, but East Carolina went off for 52 points – helped by a ton of takeaways. The Tulane D has allowed 40 points or more in four of the six games, and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

SMU will keep it going.

Tulane doesn’t run a triple-option like Navy does, but there are plenty of the same principles, and SMU was able to hold down the ground game. It’ll keep the Green Wave running attack from going off, but it’s not going to be easy.

Expect a whole lot of points, over 600 passing yards between the two attacks, and watch out for a whole lot of fun.
