Here’s who 49ers released to make room for Randy Gregory

The #49ers had to release a player to make room for Randy Gregory.

The 49ers on Friday officially announced their trade to acquire defensive end Randy Gregory from the Denver Broncos.

San Francisco prior to the deal had a full roster, so his arrival had to come with a corresponding move. To make room on their 53-man roster the 49ers released defensive lineman Kerry Hyder.

Hyder played 59 defensive snaps across four games this season with all but one of his snaps coming at DE. He had value as a versatile DL for the 49ers last year when he split his time between the interior and the edge. With better interior depth this year the snaps have dried up for Hyder.

There’s a high likelihood he winds up back on San Francisco’s practice squad. He’s very familiar with their defense and defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Having him as in-house depth for the either the edge or interior would be helpful.

Don’t be surprised if he’s back in Santa Clara as soon as Saturday when the team makes its pre-Week 5 roster moves.

Projecting 49ers new DE depth chart following roster moves

The #49ers DE depth chart looks different (and much better) with Nick Bosa at the top of it.

The 49ers on Friday made a couple of moves official.

They announced the five-year contract extension for defensive end Nick Bosa, and in a corresponding move released defensive end Austin Bryant.

That means there’s a little bit of a shakeup in the 49ers’ defensive end depth chart heading into a Week 1 matchup against the Steelers.

In a world where Bosa did not sign his deal and was not on hand for the season opener, Bryant likely would’ve played a lot since the DE group was thin and largely unproven.

Even with Bosa back in the building it’s a little surprising the team released a defensive end. Bosa didn’t get any full-speed practices in during the offseason so Sunday will be his first football since January. It would’ve made sense if the club wanted as much insurance there as possible for the opener, but the fact they released Bryant is an indicator they anticipate Bosa to play a lot and at a high level.

Here’s what the new DE depth chart should look like Sunday:

49ers roster moves: 2 DL re-signed after DE Robert Beal, WR Danny Gray placed on IR

The #49ers made some roster moves to bolster their defensive line:

The 49ers on Wednesday made a couple of expected roster moves official. They placed wide receiver Danny Gray and rookie defensive end Robert Beal on injured reserve, and filled their vacant roster spots with defensive linemen Austin Bryant and Kerry Hyder.

Bryant and Hyder were both given their outright releases at final roster cuts so they weren’t subject to waivers. The expectation upon their release was that they’d re-join the team on the 53-man roster.

Both DLs provide depth at their respective positions with Bryant adding some much-needed help on the edge while Hyder gives the team a versatile role player who fits on the interior and on the edge.

For Beal and Gray, both are eligible to return this season since they made the initial 53-man roster before going on IR. Beal is working through a hamstring injury, but he could conceivably return to give the team more pass rush depth at some point. Gray has a shoulder injury – and his return would give the receiving corps a much-needed speed threat.

Players on IR have to be there a minimum of four weeks before the club can designate them to return.

49ers WR Danny Gray (shoulder) to start season on IR

The sophomore pass catcher will start the season on the injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury.

After the deadline to cut down rosters to 53 players on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers are tasked with more business like finalizing the practice squad and adding players to the injured reserve.

After suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason, Danny Gray’s season will begin on the injured reserve according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. With Gray hitting the IR, the 49ers will have an open roster spot to add either veteran defenders Austin Bryant or Kerry Hyder to the active 53-man roster, per Barrows.

Via @mattbarrows on Twitter:

With both Gray and Ray-Ray McCloud dealing with injuries, the 49ers depth at wide receiver will be thin to start the season. Outside of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will need to lean on rookie Ronnie Bell. Veterans Willie Snead IV and Chris Conley could be available via the 49ers practice squad.

In his rookie season, Gray recorded one catch for 10 yards on seven targets over 85 snaps with the 49ers. The 49ers drafted Gray in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft out of SMU.

5 surprise cuts from the 49ers on NFL roster cut down day

As the 49ers trimmed their roster down to 53-players, here’s a look at five surprises on cut down day.

Tuesday marked the NFL’s final deadline for teams to cut their rosters down to only 53 players. With a roster built for a potential deep run in the postseason, there weren’t many shocking cuts coming out of Santa Clara on Tuesday.

With strong performances in the preseason and standout practices in training camp, there were a group of players who looked like they could be heading toward a spot on the San Francisco 49ers’ final 54-man roster only to be let go on Tuesday.

Here’s a look at five players who were surprise cuts from the 49ers on cut deadline day in the NFL.

49ers add more DL depth, re-sign Kerry Hyder

ICYMI: The #49ers are bringing back DL Kerry Hyder.

The 49ers are adding a familiar face to their defensive line. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Friday reported defensive end Kerry Hyder is re-signing with the club. No details of the deal were reported.

Hyder led the 49ers in sacks in 2020 before landing with the Seahawks in 2021. He found his way back to San Francisco last season where he was a versatile rotational piece on the front who played on the end and inside. Hyder finished last year with 1.0 sacks and three pass breakups in 16 games.

San Francisco doesn’t have a ton of depth on the edges so Hyder could have a significant impact in his second year back with defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Hyder joins a group with Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson, Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the 49ers add additional edge depth in the draft.

DE Kerry Hyder returning to 49ers on 1-year

The #49ers 2020 sack leader is back.

The 49ers are getting some defensive end help from a familiar face. Kerry Hyder, who led the team with 8.5 sacks in 2020, is coming back to San Francisco on a one-year deal per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Hyder spent the 2021 campaign in Seattle following his career year under 49ers DL coach Kris Kocurek. Last season he couldn’t replicate the success he had in 2020 and posted just 1.5 sacks in 15 games for a scuffling Seahawks club.

Bringing Hyder in doesn’t preclude the 49ers from adding more DE depth in the draft. He turns 31-years old in May and is only with the team on a one-year deal. Finding a longer term option should still be a priority for San Francisco.

The contract won’t cost a ton though, making this a good low-risk, high-reward signing. Yates reported it’s a $1.5 million deal with $750,000 guaranteed. If Hyder makes the team and puts together a 2022 season like the one he had in 2020, he could be one of the steals of the offseason.

Kerry Hyder on decision to join Seahawks: ‘They wanted me there’

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Kerry Hyder joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy to talk about his signing with the organization.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Kerry Hyder joined Stacy Rost and Michael Bumpus on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy on Friday to discuss his signing with the team.

Hyder confided that the Seahawks liked what they saw in his play and that they made him feel wanted, which influenced his decision to come to Seattle.

“They let me know that they enjoyed the way I played,” Hyder said. “They complimented the way I ran to the ball, the way I hustled, and pretty much my whole journey… the main thing is they wanted me there, so it made it an easy decision for me.”

Over his six-year career, Hyder has compiled 108 tackles (68 solo), 25 tackles for loss, 18.5 sacks, 43 quarterback hits, three fumble recoveries, and a pass defensed. He joins a defensive line that features Carlos Dunlap, Poona Ford, LJ Collier, and Benson Mayowa, among others.

Hyder’s contract is worth $6.8 million over two years with a third year that can be voided, per Spotrac.

Seahawks DE Kerry Hyder sees himself in same role as Michael Bennett

The Seattle Seahawks’ newest defensive end, Kerry Hyder, sees himself filling the same type of role as Michael Bennett.

The Seattle Seahawks added defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr. to the roster last month as a free agent and he already sees a role for himself on the team . . . a role very similar to that of his idol, Michael Bennett.

“That’s a guy I’ve looked up to in the league and a guy I’ve kind of modeled my game after,” Hyder told the media during his Zoom interview on Thursday. “The characteristics were there, that’s who I watched – same body type, that kind of thing. That’s one of the reasons I always kind of pictured myself in Seattle, because I can kind of see myself in that same type of role as Mike.”

Bennett and Hyder share other similarities as well, both hailed from Texas schools and entered the league as undrafted free agents. The two also spent time together on the Cowboys roster.

As for this season, Hyder plans to capitalize on his versatility on the defensive line.

“They want to try to use me the best way they can, whether that’s inside or outside,” he explained. “I’ve always been a defensive lineman who kind of gets in where he fits in, so if they need me inside, I’m scrapping it up inside; if I’ve got to play outside, I’ll play outside. I’m definitely coming in as a defensive end and that’s where I plan spending the majority of my time.”

Russell Wilson reacts to Seahawks bringing back Carlos Dunlap

Russell Wilson has taken to enthusiastically tweeting about notable players joining the Seattle Seahawks. This time it’s Carlos Dunlap.

Russell Wilson has recently taken to reacting enthusiastically on Twitter to the Seahawks signing notable players.

After tweeting a zealous response to the organization re-signing Benson Mayowa and picking up Kerry Hyder a few days ago, he more or less did the same when reports of defensive end Carlos Dunlap re-signing came out.

The Wilson trade speculation has settled down considerably and all signs seem to indicate that he will remain a Seahawk next season, which means, well, everything to this team’s chances to contend. However, the NFC West is looking to be stacked again for the 2021 season, so Seattle will need all the help it can get even with Wilson in the fold.
