Broncos tried out 4 players last week, including a quarterback

The Broncos tried out QB Joshua Dobbs and three wide receivers on Friday.

The Denver Broncos brought in three wide receivers and a quarterback for tryouts last week.

Javon McKinley (Notre Dame), Malik Taylor (Ferris State) and Connor Wedington (Stanford) tried out as receivers and Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee) took reps at quarterback, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Dobbs (6-3, 216 pounds) entered the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. After three years with the Steelers, he had a one-year stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to the Steelers in 2020. After spending the 2021 season on injured reserve, Dobbs signed with the Cleveland Browns earlier this year.

Dobbs served as a backup with the Browns this season while Deshaun Watson served his suspension after allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct. Cleveland waived Dobbs last week after Watson returned to the active roster.

Dobbs has appeared in six games in his career but is yet to start in a regular-season game. In relief appearances, he has completed 10-of-17 passes for 45 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Dobbs has also rushed six times for 31 yards in the NFL.

Dobbs and the three receivers that tried out for Denver are likely being considered as end-of-season reserve/future contract candidates.

49ers shuffle practice squad after George Kittle groin injury

The 49ers shuffled up their practice squad on Wednesday.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a couple of practice squad moves ahead of the start of their Week 1 on-field preparations. San Francisco added tight end Troy Fumagalli and wide receiver Connor Wedington to their practice squad, and released veteran WR Willie Snead IV in a corresponding move.

Fumagalli spent the preseason with the 49ers and gives them some in-house depth if they need it with George Kittle working through a groin injury that forced him to sit out Wednesday’s practice. San Francisco released Fumagalli at final roster cuts. He originally signed with the 49ers in May. In 19 career games with the Broncos and Patriots he has 14 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Wedington spent part of last season with the 49ers practice squad and signed a futures deal in late January. San Francisco waived him and he was quickly claimed by the Texans where he spent the offseason. He was an undrafted rookie with the Seahawks last year and hasn’t played in a regular season game.

The 49ers had to release Snead to stay at the 16-player practice squad threshold. They technically carry 17 on the practice squad roster though since offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez is exempt because he came to San Francisco via the NFL’s international pathway program. They now have a full practice squad roster and any new additions will need to come with a corresponding move.

Texans release WR Connor Wedington

The Houston Texans have released undrafted rookie wideout Connor Wedington, who is a candidate to join the practice squad.

The Houston Texans are trimming the bottom of their roster as they work to finalize their 53-man squad.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have released rookie receiver Connor Wedington. The Texans initially signed the undrafted free agent from Stanford to add to their depth at receiver throughout the offseason workouts and training camp.

Coach Lovie Smith told reporters on Aug. 1 after the first few practices that the coaches were noticing some of the good things Wedington had done.

In Wilson’s report, there are indications that Wedington would make for a good candidate on the Texans’ practice squad.

Texans awarded 2 players off waivers among other roster moves

The Houston Texans made a bevy of roster moves, including the waiver claim of DB Kendall Sheffield from the Atlanta Falcons.

Talent evaluation and roster acquisition doesn’t stop simply because the NFL draft is over and free agency has dried up.

The Houston Texans were busy on Monday with a bevy of roster transactions — including the signings of rookies Kenyon Green and John Metchie.

Houston waived defensive backs Reggie Robinson and Kolby Harvell-Peel. For Harvell-Peel, according to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, if he goes unclaimed off waivers, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy reverts to injured reserve.

The Texans also put in waiver claims of their own and were awarded defensive back Kendall Sheffield from the Atlanta Falcons and receiver Connor Wedington from the San Francisco 49ers.

Sheffield played in 38 games for the Falcons over the past three seasons, starting in 20 of them. The former fourth-round pick from Ohio State generated 101 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, and six pass breakups in his time with Atlanta.

Wedington, a former Stanford product, spent time with the 49ers on their practice squad in 2021 after going undrafted.

Local product Connor Wedington ready to compete to make Seahawks roster

Local product, receiver Connor Wedington out of Sumner, is ready to compete to make the Seattle Seahawks roster as an undrafted free agent.

Local Sumner product Connor Wedington is realizing his NFL dream after signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford.

“This is the hometown team, the Seahawks, I’ve been a fan since I was about three years old, and actually I remember coming to the training camp and I was about eight years old as well,” Wedington told reporters after Saturday’s rookie camp practice. “So coming back here playing for this team, it’s amazing. I can’t wait to continue to grow with this team and learn under the players ahead of me.”

Wedington acknowledges he has a tough road ahead to make the 53-man roster behind the likes of Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf and fellow rookie D’Wayne Eskridge, who was selected in the second round of this year’s NFL draft.

While other teams might have offered Wedington more money in terms of a signing bonus, the Pacific Northwest is home.

“At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason,” he explained. “I’m here, I’ve got a chip on my shoulder and I’m ready to compete.”

49ers met with Stanford wide receiver and kick returner

The San Francisco 49ers had a phone conversation with Connor Wedington, who filled a variety of roles for Stanford.

The San Francisco 49ers had a problem finding consistency in the return game last year. Even without injuries, the productivity in the punt and kick return games were lacking. The 49ers could look to shore up that area by taking it into account when looking at NFL draft prospects.

One of the top return prospects, Stanford’s Connor Wedington told the Draft Wire’s Justin Melo that he had a phone conversation with the 49ers ahead of the 2021 draft.

Wedington spent four year with the Cardinal filling a variety of roles from running back to wide receiver to kick and punt returner. His productivity was never elite, but the distribution of it is intriguing.

His best season on offense came in his third year when he caught 51 passes for 506 yards and a touchdown. In his four seasons he hauled in 106 catches for 971 yards and the lone score from his junior year.

Wedington was used sparingly as a runner, but had success when he did notch carries, racking up 87 yards on just six attempts.

Stanford never deployed him as a returner until his third year. His first two seasons he returned no kicks and notched three punt returns for a combined 22 yards. He broke out when slotted in as the full-time kick returner though as a junior. Wedington averaged 28.1 yards per return on 21 tries in 2019, and backed it up with 23.8 yards per return on four attempts last season.

The sporadic production and lack of top-end numbers could push Wedington off the draft board, but the 49ers have had a ton of success with undrafted free agents. If the Stanford product can provide special teams value, it’s easy to see why San Francisco would be interested.
