Georgia transfer, son of NFL coach, commits to Michigan

Georgia loses a transfer, who’s the son of an NFL coach, to the Michigan Wolverines

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Troy Bowles committed to the Michigan Wolverines out of the transfer portal on Saturday. Bowles was a four-star recruit and the No. 6 linebacker in the class of 2023. Bowles is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles played sparingly as a reserve with the Georgia Bulldogs. He appeared in seven games: five in 2023 and two in 2024. In 2023, he recorded five tackles, including three against UT Martin.

In the wake of C.J. Allen’s emergence as an every down linebacker, along with Chris Cole and Raylen Wilson getting more playing time, Bowles announced his decision to transfer on Dec. 13.

He joins a group of SEC transfers committing to the maize and blue. Brothers TJ and Tevis Metcalf join the Wolverines from Arkansas, and Belleville, Michigan, native Damon Payne transferred from Alabama.

Bowles will have three more years of eligibility for the Wolverines. Given his father’s expertise, he has a great football background.

Six Georgia defenders have entered the portal since the window opened. Of those, three have not announced a new destination. Cornerback Julian Humphrey transferred to Texas A&M, and Jamaal Jarrett committed to transfer to USC, following the Bear Alexander route.

Michigan football is raiding the SEC via the transfer portal. The Wolverines got two transfers from Arkansas in TJ and Tevis Metcalf and former Belleville (Mich.) five-star defensive tackle Damon Payne, who played for four years at Alabama.

The SEC flair is continuing with the latest pledge to the maize and blue out of the transfer portal.

Earlier in the week, the Wolverines quietly hosted outgoing Georgia linebacker Troy Bowles, a former four-star rated No. 63 overall according to the 247Sports proprietary rankings coming out of the 2023 recruiting class. On Saturday, Bowles shut his recruitment down as he committed to the maize and blue.

Bowles is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles. Here is how he ranks according to the recruiting services in the transfer portal:

Bowles did not play in 2024 but appeared in three games in his freshman season, 2023. He notched five tackles in his short tenure with the Bulldogs. He is the sixth transfer portal commitment of the postseason, joining the aforementioned trio as well as former Indiana wideout Donaven McCulley and Cal Poly offensive lineman Brady Norton.

Michigan is targeting a quarterback still — notably Baylor QB Dequan Finn and Fresno State QB Mikey Keene — Alabama running back Justice Haynes, Arizona CB Emmanuel Karnley, Washington State DT David Gusta and OT Fa’alili Fa’amoe, Purdue TE Max Klare, and more.

The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker has primarily served a reserve role during his time with Georgia. Bowles appeared in Georgia’s first two games of the 2024 season, but has not played since. In 2023, Bowles recorded five tackles in five games including three tackles against UT Martin.

Bowles, who has excellent speed, will have three years of eligibility at his new school. Bowles played high school football for Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida. Bowles’ father, Todd Bowles, is the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so Bowles comes from an excellent football background.

Six Georgia defenders intend to enter the transfer portal ahead of Georgia’s Sugar Bowl game on Jan. 1. Of course, almost all of these players could still play in UGA’s bowl game.

Lucky number 7: Sooners score seventh commitment in July as Lewis Carter pledges to Oklahoma

As the Sooners continue to stay scalding hot in July, landing yet another commitment. This time from four-star LB Lewis Carter.

Don’t let the lede deceive you. The Oklahoma Sooners are far from lucky this month. This type of recruiting success takes planning, hard work, and maybe just a little luck.

Nonetheless, the Sooners are as hot as an  mid-July summer day on the recruiting trail. They landed their seventh commitment in July, when 2023 linebacker Lewis Carter pledged to Oklahoma Saturday afternoon.

Carter, a four-star linebacker out of the Tampa area, chose Oklahoma over Auburn, UNC, Clemson, Florida, Miami, and UCF.

He’s smaller in build for a linebacker and maybe has long-term potential as a sub-package linebacker that plays in the box as a strong safety on other downs. He’s very athletic and that quality is the first thing that jumps out to you when watching his film.

After a fast and furious morning of predictions yesterday, Carter wasted no time locking in his future home.

With Carter’s commitment, Oklahoma is fine No. 10 nationally for recruiting in the 2023 class.

His pledge potentially closes up shop for linebacker recruiting for 2023 barring a very surprising commitment.

Carter’s recruitment was pretty swift as the Sooners only offered the Florida linebacker in May. He visited officially the weekend of June 10th, and about five weeks later he is now a member of the Sooners “CHO23N” class. Carter was offered by Venables when the first-year Sooners head coach was still the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Clemson, so the relationship was well established before the Sooners’ offer came in.

The Floridian joins four-star Samuel Omosigho, three-star Phil Picciotti, and three-star Kaleb Spencer as new linebackers to be coached by Ted Roof and Brent Venables. Carter’s commitment gives Oklahoma sixteen commitments in total.

Four-star linebacker recruit Troy Bowles plans to make a decision on where he will play college football on July 16 at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Bowles’ top three schools are Georgia, Ohio State, and Oklahoma.

Troy Bowles is projected to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann have done an excellent job recruiting elite linebackers in the class of 2023. The Dawgs currently already have commitments from the No. 5 linebacker in the rising senior class, Raylen Wilson, and the No. 10 linebacker, CJ Allen. Can the Bulldogs add another elite linebacker in Troy Bowles?

Bowles, who is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, is a member of the class of 2023. That means Troy Bowles has a great mind to pick whenever he has a question about football or life. It also helps Bowles have an advanced football IQ at a young age.

The rising senior plays high school football for Tampa Jesuit in Tampa, Florida. Jesuit won a state title last season in the highly competitive 6A division of Florida high school football.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker is the No. 44 recruit in the class of 2023 class. Bowles is disruptive and frequently makes critical interceptions, pass deflections and sacks. The four-star prospect is the second-ranked linebacker in his class and the No. 11 recruit in Florida.

The Jesuit multi-sport star plays basketball and runs track. Bowles is an elite athlete that can dunk a basketball despite only being 6-foot-1.  As a linebacker, Bowles shows the potential to be formidable in coverage at the college level.

Bowles announced his commitment date when he dropped his top three schools. The elite linebacker received a scholarship offer from Georgia on May 10, 2021.

Elite linebacker Troy Bowles has Sooners in his top 3 as recruitment winds down

Oklahoma finds itself in the top 3 for elite linebacker prospect Troy Bowles.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had a productive July on the recruiting trail and it’s going to be even more so in the coming days. Oklahoma has many notable targets committing soon and some other noteworthy targets are winding their recruitments down.

One of those prospects is elite linebacker prospect Troy Bowles, son of NFL head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles’ recruitment has largely featured teams in the southeast region of the United States. His Top eight reflected that.

Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, and Rutgers joined the Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs, and Ohio State Buckeyes in his top eight released in May. However, in the time since then, Bowles has gone on official visits to the latter three schools, which makes sense as to why they’d be his top three as well.

With his official visits behind him and a final three decided on, Bowles is ready to make his decision and that will come on July 16th. Georgia currently has all three crystal ball predictions in their favor on 247Sports right now so it may seem that Oklahoma ultimately may end up on the outside looking in here.

No one knows for certain but considering how hot Oklahoma has been on the recruiting trail over the last few weeks nothing is completely off the table. Given Brent Venables knack for recruiting the linebacker position, Oklahoma could still very much be in the race for Bowles.

Should the Sooners miss out on Bowles, they’ll turn their attention to another Tampa, Fla. linebacker to round out their collection of linebacker prospects for the 2023 class in four-star Lewis Carter.
