Rams sign RB Malcolm Brown to practice squad, waive RB Trey Ragas and OLB Keir Thomas

The Rams are reuniting with Malcolm Brown, signing him to their practice squad. They also waived two players on Thursday.

It’s a day of reunions for the Los Angeles Rams. In addition to signing Kendall Blanton off the Chiefs’ practice squad, the Rams are also bringing back another familiar face: Malcolm Brown. That’s the same Malcolm Brown who was with the team from 2015-2020 before signing with the Dolphins as a free agent in 2021.

The Rams announced they’ve signed him to the practice squad, waiving running back Trey Ragas to make room for him. Additionally, they waived Keir Thomas from the 53-man roster, likely opening up a spot for Blanton’s arrival – which is not official yet.

In his last season with the Rams, Brown rushed for a career-high 419 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards per carry in 2020. He also caught 23 passes for 162 yards, both of which were career bests, too.

Last season in Miami, Brown only played seven games and rushed for 125 yards. He signed with the Saints in July but was waived less than a month later.

Former Raiders RB Trey Ragas signs on with Rams

The man who was dubbed Trey Vegas has signed with the Los AnRagas Rams

The man who was dubbed Trey “Vegas” in his time with the Raiders last season, will have to find a new nickname for a new city. He was waived by the Raiders back in May and as of today has found a new home with the Los Angeles Rams.

So, maybe Trey LTrey Ragams? Trey Los AnRagas?

Doesn’t really have the same ring to it.

The former undrafted free agent out of Louisiana signed on with the Raiders last offseason and would impress enough to earn a spot on the practice squad for the season. For all the hype he seemed to generate in preseason — much of it in part from his catchy nickname — he was elevated for just one game last season, and touched the ball just three times for a combined 15 yards.

He did make some nifty plays in the preseason though, and made for some interesting fodder. Good to see him get another chance to make an NFL roster in LA.

Rams sign RB Trey Ragas, waive RB Xavier Jones with injury designation

The Rams made a couple of roster moves at running back, waiving Xavier Jones and signing Trey Ragas

After practice on Friday, the Los Angeles Rams made a couple of roster moves, both at running back. The team announced Xavier Jones has been waived with an injury designation, and his spot has been filled by Trey Ragas.

Ragas signed with the Raiders as an undrafted rookie in 2021. He bounced between the practice squad and active roster last season and after signing a futures contract this offseason, he was waived in May.

Jones has been with the Rams since 2020, also going undrafted. He played in 13 games as a rookie but he missed the entire 2021 season due to injury.

Raiders waive RB Trey Ragas

Raiders clear space in crowded RB room by cutting Trey Ragas

An already crowded running back room got more crowded last weekend when the Raiders spent two draft selections on running backs. Today the room was cleared out by one with the waiving of Trey Ragas.

Ragas went undrafted in 2021 out of Louisiana and was signed by the Raiders. He showed up well in the preseason, earning the handy nickname Trey Vegas, and earned a spot on the practice squad, getting called up to appear in one game last season.

With the restructure of Kenyan Drakes deal, the free agent additions of Brandon Bolden and Ameer Abdullah and the drafting of Zamir White and Brittain Brown and, of course Josh Jacobs still in house, something had to give, because seven running backs is excessive. Ragas is basically the low man on the totem pole, so he got the ax.

The team is currently looking at adding a lot of undrafted rookies to the mix, which is part of the reason they are making roster transactions in order to clear space.

Raiders sign LB Will Compton off practice squad, elevate three others

Raiders sign LB Will Compton off practice squad, elevate three others

Just four days ago, Will Compton was signed onto the Raiders practice squad. And Saturday the team signed him to the active roster, meaning he figures to on the field for the team Sunday when they face the Chiefs in Kansas City.

Compton’s addition is vital at the moment due to the injuries to linebackers Denzel Perryman, Nick Kwiatkoski, and Patrick Onwuasor.

The veteran linebacker Compton appeared in nine games with the Raiders in 2019 where he started at middle linebacker for four games and was a key special teams contributor under interim head coach Rich Bisaccia.

“I know he understands the special teams system for sure, and he did play last year,” Bisaccia said on Wednesday. “So, I’ve been staying in touch with him as well as other guys that we kind of keep our eyes on as you go through these situations, and we felt the need for him to come in. . . Will is a MIKE linebacker by trade, so it gives us a guy that can learn the system that way. But I know he can play on special teams for us, and he ran around pretty good out there today.”

Also seeing an elevation from the practice squad for Sunday’s game were LB Javin White, WR Tyron Johnson, and RB Trey Ragas.

White obviously helps with the depth at linebacker. Running back also has depth issues with Kenyan Drake lost for the year and Jalen Richard once again on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Raiders place QB Marcus Mariota on IR, sign LB Marquel Lee off practice squad

Raiders place QB Marcus Mariota on IR, sign LB Marquel Lee off practice squad

Several serious injuries occurred in the season opener for the Raiders. Today QB Marcus Mariota became the third player to land on injured reserve from injuries suffered in the game. He aggravated a quad injury that had been bothering him throughout the preseason and how will be gone at least the next eight weeks.

Mariota joins guard Denzelle Good and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy who were also placed on IR this week. Mariota was the first of the three to suffer his injury. It was on the third play of the game when Mariota came in the game at QB and Derek Carr split out wide. Mariota kept the ball on a read option and sprinted up the middle for a 31-yard gain.

It was just the kind of play Jon Gruden had been hoping to see from Mariota, adding an extra wrinkle to his offense. And it will be the last time he sees such a play from Mariota for a while.

This is the second season in a row with the Raiders that Mariota has spent the first part of season on injured reserve. Last season he wasn’t activated until week ten and didn’t see the field until week 14 when he came in for an injured Derek Carr early in their game against the Chargers.

To fill the roster spot, the Raiders signed linebacker Marquel Lee from the practice squad. Lee was a fifth round pick by the Raiders in 2017. He spent three seasons with the Raiders and was cut prior to the 2020 season and hasn’t played an NFL snap since. He spent this offseason with the Bills before being waived prior to the season and signing back with the Raiders onto the practice squad.

The team also announced that they have elevated G Lester Cotton and RB Trey Ragas from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Raiders elevate undrafted rookie RB Trey Ragas from practice squad vs Ravens

Raiders elevate undrafted rookie RB Trey Ragas from practice squad vs Ravens

One of the stories of Raiders’ camp was the performance of running back Trey Ragas. He earned a spot on the Raiders’ practice squad and now he could see action in the team’s season opener. The undrafted rookie has been elevated from the practice squad.

His elevation suggests the status of Josh Jacobs is still somewhat in question. Though recent reports have Jacobs with a high likelihood of playing, whether or not he will be full-go is another question. Ragas’ elevation could be a precaution, or it could be to share the load with Jacobs and Kenyan Drake.

Peyton Barber is also on the roster but was just added last week, so he may not be up to speed with the offensive scheme. Ragas, on the other hand, has spent the entire offseason with the Raiders and impressed in preseason action, making a strong case for the regular-season roster.

Ragas went undrafted out of Lousiana where he put up 3572 yards and 38 touchdowns in four seasons, averaging six yards per carry.

Louisiana at Appalachian State odds, lines, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Sun Belt Championship Game betting odds between the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and Appalachian State Mountaineers.

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (10-2, 7-1 Sun Belt West) and Appalachian State Mountaineers (11-1, 7-1 Sun Belt East) meet in the Sun Belt Championship Game for the second consecutive season. We analyze the Louisiana-Appalachian State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Louisiana at Appalachian State: Three things you need to know

1. App State has the SBC Offensive Player of the Year in RB Darrynton Evans, who posted 1,250 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, while also adding three scores through the air and a kickoff return for a touchdown. He had 218 all-purpose yards with a 97-yard kickoff TD in last season’s title game vs. the Ragin’ Cajuns.

2. These teams hooked up Oct. 9 in Lafayette and it was surprisingly a defensive battle, going in favor of App State by a 17-7 count. The total on that game was set at 69.5.

3. The Ragin’ Cajuns rank eighth the nation in total yards (500.3) and 12th in points scored (38.8). The Mountaineers rank 18th in the country in rushing yards (226.0) and 11th in points scored (38.9).

Prediction

Appalachian State 33, Louisiana 27

Moneyline (ML)

App State (-223) is a little too expensive for a battle between two 10-win teams. While the Mountaineers are at home, remember, they fell to Georgia Southern in Boone last month. The Ragin’ Cajuns (+180) have some tremendous weapons in QB Levi Lewis and RB Elijah Mitchell, and this game really could go either way if the turnover battle is heavily skewed in one direction.

Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS. App State (-6.5, -110) is a tempting play at less than a touchdown, but Louisiana (+6.5, -110) has the horses to either win this one outright, or make it a one-possession game. The Mountaineers won their final three games by a combined 86 points, but that was against the dregs of the SBC and not a quality team like Louisiana. My lean would be with the Cajuns, ever so slightly, but I am not playing it.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 56.5 (-115) is your best bet if you’re looking to play the SBC title game. These teams each have explosive running backs capable of housing it every time. Evans and Mitchell have combined for 34 total touchdowns, but there are other players capable of big plays, too, including Ragas and RB Raymond Calais for ULL, and QB Zac Thomas and WR Thomas Hennigan for App State.
