4 surprises from the Steelers snap counts vs the Raiders

Here are some numbers that stood out from the Steelers snap counts last week.

On Sunday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers used a late defensive stand to hold off the Las Vegas Raiders and extend its win streak to two games and move to 2-1 on the season. We’ve had a chance to pour over the gamebook and here are 4 things that stood out.

Steelers CB James Pierre’s role on defense still up in the air

Steelers DC Teryl Austin isn’t sure what the team will do with James Pierre.

One of the strongest performances on defense Friday night for the Pittsburgh Steelers was cornerback James Pierre. Pierre played 51 snaps which was the most of any Steelers defender and led the team with 10 total tackles.

Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin offered up his evaluation of Pierre’s performance and in the usual Steelers style, offered very little in terms of positive affirmations and instead keeps things all business.

“He plays hard. But I thought he left some plays out there that he could’ve made,” defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said. “I think he’s still in a position where he brings good value. But is he the 4th CB or the 5th CB and special teams guy? We don’t know.”

Pierre must take advantage of every defensive snap he can get as he remains caught up in a position battle. The team has Patrick Peterson, Joey Porter Jr., Levi Wallace and Chandon Sullivan as the team’s 3 primary corners and top reserve. This leaves two spots on the depth chart and Pierre isn’t alone fight for the spot.

Seahawks signing of Devin Bush 1 of 10 free-agent moves to not overlook

Seattle’s signing of former Steelers linebacker Devin Bush made NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks’ list of top free-agent moves to not overlook.

The Seattle Seahawks added a few new faces to the roster during the first week of free agency, including former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, Devin Bush.

The move made NFL.com analyst Buck Brooks’ top-10 free agent signings so far that are not to be overlooked.

“Pete Carroll loves a reclamation project, as evidenced by his work with Geno Smith, among many others, during his tenure with the Seahawks,” Brooks writes. ‘Bush is next on the list as a former top-10 pick who struggled with injuries and inconsistency in Pittsburgh. Despite failing to live up to expectations as a Steeler, the ultra-competitive defender still has the dog in him that made the Michigan product a ballyhooed prospect in the Class of 2019.”

“If Carroll can crack the code and unlock the feisty defender who delivered a number of splash plays as a rookie, the Seahawks’ defense could rejoin the ranks of the elite with Bush and a group of junkyard dogs leading the way.”

The Eagles’ signing of former Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny also made Brooks’ list.

Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick named to AP All-Pro first team

Minkah Fitzpatrick was the only Steeler named an All-Pro this season.

The NFL announced the 2022 All-Pro first and second teams on Friday, and only one Pittsburgh Steeler received recognition: safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

This is the third time in the last four years Fitzpatrick has been named an All-Pro since being traded to the Steelers. Fitzpatrick missed out in 2021, primarily because his role changed on the defense and he was relegated to being a run-stopper and wasn’t able to roam and make splash plays in the passing game.

Fitzpatrick was tied for the league lead with six interceptions in 2022. He also had 96 total tackles and 11 passes defended.

Fitzpatrick was named to the NFLPA’s inaugural All-Pro team, which was announced this week. Fitzpatrick was also voted team MVP by his teammates.

Frigid Christmas Eve temperatures in Pittsburgh for Raiders vs Steelers

Christmas Eve game in Pittsburgh the coldest Derek Carr ever played in a Raiders uniform.

Weather warnings are happening across the country today. Basically the only parts of the country not affected are those west of the Rockies. Like Las Vegas. But the Raiders aren’t playing in Las Vegas today. They’re in Pittsburgh. Where it’s positively frozen.

As of 3pm local time, the temperatures are still in single digits, with a wind chill that makes it feel like sub zero temperatures.

The forecast says the winds should calm down by the start of the game at 8:15 local time. But the temperature is still expected to be just 14 degrees.

In case you were wondering, Derek Carr has never played in a game with temps this low before. And has never won a game with a temp below 37 degrees. That temp is gonna seem downright tropical compared to the temperature for tonight’s game.

Typically what this means is lower scoring games with each team relying more on the ground game. That ball is as hard as a rock and so is the field while the players will be wearing more gear to try and stay warm. That’s a recipe for turnovers.

Chase Claypool getting comfortable with Mitch Trubisky as QB

Former UNC football QB Mitch Trubisky is building a good relationship with WR Chase Claypool during OTAs with the Pittsburg Steelers.

After a season as a backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and in a locker room alongside star quarterback [autotag]Josh Allen[/autotag], former UNC football standout [autotag]Mitch Trubisky[/autotag] as ready for his second chance as a starting QB in the NFL.

Trubisky, who signed with the Pittsburg Steelers this offseason, is trending as the starting quarterback as OTAs and minicamps are going on.

It also doesn’t hurt to have good chemistry with the No. 1 wide receiver on the team in [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag].

Claypool talked about his relationship with the former UNC quarterback earlier this week.

“He’s an awesome guy. He’s easy to get along with, easy to talk to and he’s very forgiving if you make a mistake. He doesn’t care, just moves on to the next play,” Claypool said. “I think just because he always comes and talks to you after something doesn’t go perfectly, you know exactly what to do next time so you can build off it.”

Trubisky started 50 of 51 games during his four years in Chicago. He had 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions with the Bears while throwing for 10,609 yards.

His best season was in 2018, his second season, when he threw 28 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions while leading the Bears to an 11-3 record in 14 starts. He was also named to the Pro Bowl that season.

Time will tell if Trubisky will be able to revitalize his career as the once No. 2 overall draft pick, but though the first few months on the Steelers roster, he seems to be doing all of the right things.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday,  they will do it without defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs.

The team announced on Saturday that the ankle injury Buggs has been dealing with won’t let him go this weekend. The team had originally listed Buggs as questionable.

Some good news along the defensive line as injured defensive tackle Carlos Davis is healthy and will be available. The Steelers defensive line has taken a beating this season and is operating with minimal talent not named Cam Heyward.

Raiders use ‘collective effort’ to make up for O-line woes in big win over Steelers

Raiders use ‘collective effort’ to make up for Oline woes in big win over Steelers

Right now the Raiders are celebrating another big win. They leave Pittsburgh with an impressive 26-17 victory over the Steelers. The most impressive thing about this Raiders win was that they weren’t firing on all cylinders.

Just like in the season opener against the Ravens, things started off slowly. But the Raiders hung around all game long and pulled away late.

It was like the Raiders were playing with house money much of the game. Two of their first three scoring drives ended terribly.

Their first scoring drive featured two straight fumbles; one on a strip-sack by TJ Watt which John Simpson recovered and the next a fumbled snap. Their third scoring drive went all the way to the two-yard line only to have three offensive line penalties back them up to the 22.

Even with Darren Waller held to one catch for eight yards, the offense stalling and bumbling and stumbling they still headed into the half with a 9-7 lead because the defense was holding up.

The second half saw more find play from the defense, but it was joined by the passing attack taking things up a notch.

They broke through on their second drive with Carr finding Bryan Edwards, Hunter Renfrow, and Henry Ruggs all for sizable gains. The drive finished off with a touchdown pass to Foster Moreau.

Despite not scoring a touchdown until late in the third quarter, the Raiders headed into the fourth quarter with a 16-7 lead.

The run game going nowhere. Josh Jacobs was out with injuries to his toe and ankle, so the starting running back was a recent addition, Peyton Barber. Heading into the fourth quarter Barber was averaging less than a yard per carry.

“You’re missing a superstar in Jacobs, the whole Oline is banged up, all these kind of things,” Derek Carr said after the game. “The AFC North, they want to stop the run, so we knew we were going to have to throw it to have a chance to win.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Steelers got back in it. A 52-yard bomb from Ben Roethlisberger to Chase Claypool set up a 25-yard touchdown pass to RB Najee Harris. But the Raiders saw the deep completion to Claypool and raised them with Derek Carr launching a 61-yard touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III to bring it back to a two-score lead at 23-14.

A deep ball catch like that, in which Ruggs shows off his breakaway speed, is just what they need from him. Carr had been looking for it all game long and he finally found his moment.

“They gave us a good look,” Carr said. “But Henry’s so fast, and speed kills, and the advantages of his speed showing up that he can get open so fast.”

“When I saw that [play] one it was just run,” Ruggs said. “He threw it up and it was just go get it. And that’s all I could think of. Go get it and don’t drop it.”

A field goal would bring it back to a one-score game, but with 3:37 remaining the Raiders run game showed up just enough to bleed the clock down and allow Daniel Carlson to came out and put the game away with a 45-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining.

“When we had to run it, it was a beautiful thing, we were able to do it,” Carr said of that final drive. “I’m sure we can look at the film and see we could do this or this better, but that’s every game, win or lose. But very proud of our guys, coach Cable… he’s unbelievable. What he can do with, not just the first string guys, but with anybody. They come in and they play and they’re ready to fight. They did at the end. We were able to run the ball and kill some time.”

Derek Carr’s big-time second half had him finish the game with 382 yards and two touchdowns.

“I just let his performance speak for itself,” head coach Jon Gruden said of his QB. “I’ve been clamoring for Derek Carr since I’ve been here, so hopefully he gets some recognition for doing what he did today. He had some long drives, he was big again at the end of the game against a great defense two weeks in a row and it’s a big reason why we’ve been able to win.”

Leading the way again for the defense was the pass rush. Solomon Thomas put up two sacks while Maxx Crosby had five QB hits.

The secondary was flying around as well, with Casey Hayward and Trayvon Mullen each putting up two pass breakups.

“If George [Atkinson] and Jack [Tatum] were around, they’d be proud of some of the hits, legal hits,” Gruden said of the pass defense. “They were flying around, they had some good vision on the quarterback, they had some good breaks, and made some tremendous plays. Had to have those plays. Thought the rush was pretty good, they threw it quick, stopped the run for the most part, and got off the field on third down in some key moments.”

The Raiders’ leading scorer was Daniel Carlson with 14 points on four field goals and two extra points. He remains perfect on the season and hasn’t missed a field goal try since week seven of last season.

“Just a collective effort. By all three phases,” Gruden said of his team’s performance. “That’s what you have to do to win in this league, on the road against a good team.”
