2 more players return to Steelers via reserve/future deals

As is the usual order of business this time of year, the Steelers signed two more players to Reserve/Future contracts today.

Running back Trey Edmunds and offensive tackle Chaz Green were brought back to the Steelers on reserve/future contracts the team announced today.

Both players spent time on the Steelers practice squad this past season. Green was elevated for two games in special teams capacity. Edmunds has been with the team on and off since 2018 and has appeared in 21 games.

Edmunds and Green were added to the list of 12 others the Steelers signed 12 players earlier this week — per usual this time of year.

Steelers sign RB Trey Edmunds, T Jarron Jones to futures contracts for 2021

Edmunds, who was cut on Tuesday, cleared waivers and returned to Pittsburgh where he’s appeared in 19 games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed two more players, running back Trey Edmunds and tackle Jarron Jones, to futures contracts on Friday. The two join the 13 players signed on Thursday.

Edmunds, who was cut on Tuesday, cleared waivers and returned to Pittsburgh, where he’s appeared in 19 games.

Jones was one of several former XFL players signed by the Steelers in the offseason. He spent most of the season on the practice squad, often protected, before being placed on the practice squad/injured list in December.

Pittsburgh Steelers waive RB Trey Edmunds

The first order of business (there will be many) for the Steelers was to waive running back Trey Edmunds.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offseason started sooner than many hoped or expected. And, with that, their first order of business — there will be many — was to waive running back Trey Edmunds.

Edmunds was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2017. After Pittsburgh signed him to its practice squad in 2018, Edmunds had been waived and re-signed by the team several times and appeared in 19 games. He spent the final seven games of the season on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 10.

His brother, Terrell, is a Steelers safety.

Steelers place RB Trey Edmunds on IR and add TE Vance McDonald to roster

Edmunds’ hamstring has landed him on injured reserve, making room for McDonald.

The Thanksgiving holiday doesn’t keep the Pittsburgh Steelers from making moves necessary to strengthen the team.

Running back Trey Edmunds, who was signed to the roster on Oct. 10, was placed on injured reserve. He suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 10 Steelers-Bengals matchup.

The Edmunds move allowed Pittsburgh to add tight end Vance McDonald to the active/inactive roster. He was activated on Nov. 24 and returned to practice after being removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Though McDonald hasn’t contributed much in the passing game (9 rec., 61 yards), the Steelers could use his blocking skills in the run and pass game. Hopefully, Vance will be active for the rescheduled Steelers-Ravens brawl on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers rule out 3 for Jacksonville Jaguars game

The Steelers look to be heading into Jacksonville with nearly a clean slate on the injury front.

The Steelers Friday injury report looks fairly clean, with only running backs Trey Edmunds, Jaylen Samuels, and linebacker Jayrone Elliott ruled out for Sunday.

Edmunds (hamstring) and Samuels (quad) were both injured versus the Bengals. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated on Tuesday that the backs’ availability would be dependent on practice participation, and neither took part all week. Elliott (illness) also has not been at practice this week.

As anticipated, cornerback Mike Hilton will be back in action. He was a full practice participant all week after exiting with a shoulder injury in the second quarter of Week 6.

Though Cam Sutton has played solid in Hilton’s absence, having him back in the lineup is just the injection Pittsburgh’s defense needs.

Pittsburgh Steelers escape Week 10 victory without significant injuries

It’s always a good week when the Steelers injury report is short, especially as the season winds down.

The Pittsburgh Steelers early injury report was a short one. In Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s weekly press conference, he noted that fourth- and fifth-string running backs Jaylen Samuels (quad) and Trey Edmunds (hamstring) are dealing with injuries that could limit them in practice this week.

Samuels has been utilized more on special teams (77 snaps) than any other game facet. He’s been on the field in 39 pass snaps and three run play snaps.

Edmunds was re-signed by Pittsburgh on Nov. 10 and took the spot of tight end Vance McDonald on the 53-man roster. Assuming McDonald will return to this lineup this week, it’s possible Edmunds reverts to the practice squad.

He’s baaaack! Trey Edmunds replaces TE Vance McDonald’s roster spot

Edmunds has been signed to Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster.

Former Steelers running back Trey Edmunds is no longer former. The team announced on Tuesday that not only is he back with Pittsburgh, but he was signed to the 53-man roster. Edmunds was released on Saturday to make room for linebackers Avery Williams and Jayrone Elliott.

The fourth-year back will take tight end Vance McDonald’s spot on the roster. McDonald was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday after testing positive for the virus.

Steelers RB Trey Edmunds elevated to active roster

In transactions on Saturday, the Steelers promoted Edmunds from the practice squad to active/inactive roster.

According to the Pittsburgh Steelers, running back Trey Edmunds was boosted to the active/inactive roster from the practice squad on Saturday.

Edmunds’ status for game day will be announced 90 minutes before kickoff, but expect he’ll be active. He’s next man up with fullback Derek Watt and safety Marcus Allen, heavy contributors to special teams, ruled out for Week 5.

In limited participation last year, Edmunds had 92 yards rushing and 48 receiving. The highlight of his season was an interception on a fake punt against the Los Angeles Rams. Steelers.com has the replay — watch it here.

Following the Steelers-Eagles game, Edmunds will automatically head back to the practice squad without dealing with the waivers process.

Derek Watt officially signs with the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially sign fullback Derek Watt

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on March 17 that the Pittsburgh Steelers were signing fullback Derek Watt to a contract. The Steelers made it official today, signing Watt to a three-year contract.

According to Spotrac, the terms of the agreement are three years/$9.75 million. The contract includes a $3.25 million signing bonus and an average annual salary of $3.25 million (all guaranteed). Watt will earn a base salary of $1 million while carrying a cap hit of $2.08 million and a dead cap value of $3.25 million.

The Steelers now have two sets of brothers on the roster — Watt and his brother T.J. and the Edmunds, safety Terrell and running back Trey.

Sean McDermott on Edmunds brothers’ success: ‘It’s no surprise’

Sean McDermott is not at all surprised by the success of the Edmunds family in the NFL.

Those listening to a radio broadcast of the Buffalo Bills’ upcoming matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers may find themselves confused at multiple points throughout the contest.

Why? Because the name ‘Edmunds’ will likely be said once every three or four minutes.

Three players bearing the last name will partake in the matchup, with Pittsburgh’s Trey and Terrell set to face off against their youngest sibling, Buffalo’s Tremaine, for the first time in a professional setting.

It’s the first time that three siblings will take part in the same NFL game since 1927, the same year that the Peace Bridge, a structure connecting Buffalo with southern Ontario, commenced operations.

There will be no peace on Sunday, however, as Tremaine’s Bills can clinch a postseason berth with a win over his brothers’ Steelers. It would mark the first playoff berth of the middle linebacker’s prosperous young career, a two-year stretch in which he has quarterbacked Buffalo’s dominant defense while contributing 218 tackles and 20 pass deflections.

Three hours down the interstate in Pittsburgh, Tremaine’s siblings have also found success. Terrell has started 28 games at safety since being selected with the 28th pick in the 2018 draft, notching 161 tackles and one interception. Trey, a situational ball carrier and special teamer, has appeared in 12 games for the Steelers over the past two seasons, picking up 140 yards on 28 total touches.

The three siblings have carved out significant roles for themselves on competitive NFL teams, a testament to the family’s strength and willingness to support one another, per Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott.

“I smile because it’s no surprise,” McDermott said. “On our end, you spend time with Tremaine and you understand, and you know the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when you see the other siblings and the success that they’ve had.”

“You meet their dad, their grandmother, their extended family. Like I’ve said before about Tremaine, the support that he has from his family and the roots that he has, has set himself and his brothers up for success.”
