2 more players return to Steelers via reserve/future deals

As is the usual order of business this time of year, the Steelers signed two more players to Reserve/Future contracts today.

Running back Trey Edmunds and offensive tackle Chaz Green were brought back to the Steelers on reserve/future contracts the team announced today.

Both players spent time on the Steelers practice squad this past season. Green was elevated for two games in special teams capacity. Edmunds has been with the team on and off since 2018 and has appeared in 21 games.

Edmunds and Green were added to the list of 12 others the Steelers signed 12 players earlier this week — per usual this time of year.

2 Steelers elevated to 53-man roster for showdown with Packers

In light of the Chase Claypool injury, 2 offensive players have been elevated from the practice squad.

With a hamstring injury holding Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool out of their contest with the Green Bay Packers, Cody White has been elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

And the already shaky offensive line unit is also dealing with injuries to tackle Chuks Okorafor and reserve tackle Rashaad Coward. Offensive lineman Chaz Green has been elevated for depth behind presumed starting tackle Joe Haeg.

Ex-Colts OT Chaz Green signs with Steelers

Former Colts OT Chaz Green signed a one-year deal with the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Chaz Green to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

Green worked in a reserve role and made just one start with the Colts in 2020. He committed three penalties on 210 offensive snaps (19%) and was credited with allowing four sacks and nine total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Colts opted to go elsewhere for depth on the offensive line this offseason, signing Julién Davenport and Sam Tevi during free agency. They brought back Will Holden as well before signing Eric Fisher to be the starter following the 2021 draft.

Green will be looking to fight for a roster spot with fellow former Colts draft pick Zach Banner, who is coming off of a torn ACL.

Colts to sign former Chargers OT Sam Tevi

Colts add an OT in free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts are signing former Los Angeles Chargers offensive tackle Sam Tevi, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Tevi was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Chargers out of Utah. Tevi played in a total of 58 games with 44 starts in his four seasons with the Chargers. The majority of his starts before last season came at the right tackle position in place of then injured starter Joe Barksdale, who he replaced as the full-time starter on the right side after his release.

In 2020, Tevi stepped into the role of blindside protector for young rookie Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, starting 14 games at the position. Tevi also had one prior left tackle start as a rookie in place of then injured starter Russell Okung in 2017.

According to Pro Football Focus, Tevi graded out at a 52.9 overall last year, a grade nearly 10 points worse than struggling Colts reserve tackle Chaz Green. Needless to say, last season was a rough year for Tevi, and he’ll hope to bounce back with a much stronger supporting cast all around the line in Indianapolis.

The Colts continue to look for answers to solve the problem of longtime left tackle stalwart Anthony Castonzo’s retirement after a 10-year career protecting the blindside in Indianapolis. While I wouldn’t expect Tevi to be the planned starter at the position, he brings experience at both tackle spots and may provide solid depth as a swing tackle that the Colts have desperately needed for the last few seasons.

6 pending free agents the Colts should let walk

Indy should let these players walk in free agency.

While the playoffs are going on, the Indianapolis Colts will be hard at work figuring out their plan for the offseason. This includes which players to re-sign before free agency and which players to let walk.

The Colts currently have 20 players set to hit free agency as either unrestricted free agents (UFA) or restricted free agents (RFA) so there are a lot of decisions to make. Even if the Colts want to retain everyone, they won’t be able to.

After taking a look at which players the Colts should re-sign, let’s see which pending free agents Indy should let walk this offseason.

Studs and duds from Colts’ 34-31 win over Packers

Studs and duds from the win.

The Indianapolis Colts (7-3) continued to prove themselves against top competition with a 34-31 win over the Green Bay Packers (7-3) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

It was a wild win for the Colts, who erased a 14-point deficit at halftime. They outscored the Packers 17-3 during the second half to gain the lead. They eventually went into overtime where the defense came up huge with a fumble and then kicked the game-winning field goal.

Here are the studs and duds from the Week 11 win over the Packers:

Indianapolis Colts Week 8 injury designations: Ryan Kelly, Moe Alie-Cox Questionable

The Detroit Lions Week 8 opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, have released their injury designations.

The Detroit Lions Week 8 opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, have released their injury designations and while they will return a Pro Bowl defensive starter, another Pro Bowler on offense is listed as questionable.

Here’s a look at the Colts’ full injury designations list.

Questionable

Player Position Injury Designation
Ryan Kelly Center (starter) Knee Questionable
Moe Alie-Cox TE (starter) Knee Questionable

Kelly suffered a knee injury in Wednesday’s practice and was unable to practice the rest of the week. It would be a big blow to lose their Pro Bowl center, as they would have to turn to rookie Danny Pinter — a fifth-round selection — to replace him. Pinter has played just 21 snaps on offense this season.

Alie-Cox, the Colts highest-graded offensive player per PFF, injured his knee in Week 5 and was unable to play in Week 6. With a bye week and limited practices on Thursday and Friday, he’ll get another checkup on Saturday to see if he can play on Sunday.

Darius Leonard LB (starter) Groin No injury designation

Leonard is the Colts defensive leader and one of the best linebackers in the NFL. His return gives an already strong Colts defense more strength up the middle.

Colts place DT Sheldon Day on IR, re-sign OL Chaz Green

Colts make more roster moves.

The Indianapolis Colts are placing defensive tackle Sheldon Day on the injured reserve list and will re-sign offensive lineman Chaz Green, the team announced Sunday.

Day underwent an offseason knee procedure that forced him to miss the entirety of training camp. He was signed to a one-year deal in free agency to compete with Grover Stewart at the one-technique defensive tackle spot.

>>>READ: Colts’ 53-man roster breakdown<<<

In years past, the injured reserve list would keep Day off of the active roster for eight weeks but new rules will have him out of commission for only the first three weeks of the season.

Green was released on Sunday following the Colts claiming tight end Noah Togiai off of the waiver wire from the Philadelphia Eagles—the only player the team claimed after the roster cuts.

With Green coming back to the roster, the Colts will have eight offensive linemen on the roster. Taking the spot of Day will be Taylor Stallworth.

Colts release OL Chaz Green to make room for TE Noah Togiai

Colts make the corresponding move for Noah Togiai.

The Indianapolis Colts released offensive tackle Chaz Green to make room for the one waiver claim they made in tight end Noah Togiai, the team announced Sunday.

After forming their initial 53-man practice squad, the Colts had eight offensive linemen including Green. After Sunday’s waiver claims went through, the Colts used one of their claims to grab the move tight end in Togiai. Now, the Colts currently have seven offensive linemen on the active roster.

Green was somewhat of a surprise keep on the initial 53-man roster even though it didn’t last a full 24 hours. With unproven depth behind the starters, it is likely the Colts will be looking to either bring up some help from the practice squad or look to free agency.

As Trey Burton deals with a calf injury that is expected to keep him out for at least the first few weeks of the season, the Colts needed to add a tight end to help out in the passing game.

With Green now released, the Colts should be looking to add at least one more body to the offensive line, especially given how much Chris Ballard and Frank Reich talk about wanting depth up front.

More moves will likely be on the way ahead of Week 1, but the Colts officially announce the waiver claim of Togiai.
