Players and personnel decisions Jets should make in season’s final quarter

A look at four players that should either see more playing time or at least a small piece of evaluation in the final five games of the season.

The Jets have five games left in the season and at 4-8, their hopes for the playoffs are all but gone. The team doesn’t even know who their starting quarterback will be for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. At this point, the Jets want to try and finish strong for team morale reasons, but it may also be time to start looking ahead to 2024 and what the roster could look like.

Because of that, the Jets have some players who deserve to see more playing time, even if it’s just for 2024 evaluation purposes. We’ll take a look at some of those players and personnel options the Jets should consider looking at in the homestretch of the season.

Jets waive safety Trey Dean

First minor surprise of the Jets’ cuts

The Jets waived safety Trey Dean on Monday as reported by uStadium. The Jets hope to get Dean back on the practice squad but he will have to clear waivers first.

Dean was the second-leading tackler during the preseason with 24. Zaire Barnes led the team with 25 in August. Dean showed potential and did all he could to make the 53-man roster but would have ultimately been the 5th safety behind Jordan Whitehead, Tony Adams, Adrian Amos and Ashtyn Davis. The Jets also have Jarrick Bernard-Converse, who will likely start the season on the reserve/PUP list.

Perhaps the Jets could have a better chance at getting Dean back by waiving him Monday instead of Tuesday. We’ll find out soon enough.

6 Jets to watch in preseason Week 3 vs. Giants

Here are 6 players from the Jets to watch in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Giants.

The final week of the preseason is upon us and the New York Jets will square off against the New York Giants on Saturday. This will be the final tune-up game for the Jets as they embark on a season filled with lofty expectations upon the addition of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

As one of the teams that participated in the Hall of Fame Game this year, the Jets have produced a 1-2 record in their first three preseason matchups. Just last week, New York lost 13-6 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With the Jets playing more starters on Saturday against the Giants, here are six players to keep tabs on in the preseason finale.

Position questions still to be sorted out for Jets entering final week of camp

What needs to be sorted this week for the Jets?

The Jets have just one week of training camp and preseason left. They’ll face the New York Giants Saturday in what will also be a bit of a dress rehearsal and final tune-up for the regular season as Aaron Rodgers will play in his first preseason game since 2018.

Entering this final week, there are still a few questions at some positions left to be answered before the Jets make their cuts down to 53 players and truly begin preparing for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 11. Let’s run through some of those questions here, starting with the quarterback position.

Stock up, stock down for Jets following preseason game vs. Buccaneers

Which bubble players helped or hurt their case Saturday?

The Jets have now played three preseason games following Saturday’s meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With final cuts just over a week away, a couple of players, especially those on the roster bubble, started making their final cases to be included on the 53-man roster. Following Saturday’s game, here are some players whose stocks went up and went down for the Jets.

Jets drop to 1-2 in preseason following 13-6 loss to Buccaneers

One preseason game left

The New York Jets dropped their second preseason game this summer after a 13-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Quarterback Zach Wilson went 9/13 for 70 yards and also led the team in rushing for the game with 41 yards on two attempts that included a nice 35-yard scramble. Tim Boyle, on the other hand, struggled and began raising questions about whether he will be the No. 3 quarterback moving forward. It’s possible, with how Wilson has progressed, the Jets only carry two quarterbacks.

Running back Zonovan Knight, battling for a roster spot, had eight rushes for 33 yards but also lost a fumble that could hurt his chances of making the 53. Rookie Israel Abanikanda had 30 yards on four attempts before leaving with an injury that was deemed a thigh contusion.

Wide receiver Jason Brownlee needed a good game to help build his chances back up and he did so with 50 yards on four catches (six targets). Brownlee lost some of the momentum he had built up over the spring and early summer so this was a much-needed boost for him with final cuts looming in a little over a week.

Safety Trey Dean, also fighting for a spot, led the team with ten tackles, three more than any other player. Recently-signed Jalyn Holmes recorded two sacks and Bryce Huff had one of his own.

The Jets have one more preseason game. That will come Saturday against the New York Giants. The regular season begins in about three weeks against the Buffalo Bills.

6 Jets to watch in preseason Week 2 vs. Buccaneers

The Jets face the Buccaneers in Week 2 of the preseason and we have 6 players to watch in Saturday’s matchup.

After holding joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, the New York Jets will take on Todd Bowles’ squad on Saturday for their third preseason contest. Each week is an opportunity for players to earn roster spots and there is less than a month until the regular season kicks off.

The Jets shut out the Carolina Panthers 27-0 in last week’s exhibition game following a 21-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game. With the Jets gearing up for another preseason matchup on Saturday, here are six players to keep an eye on versus the Buccaneers.

6 Jets players to watch in preseason Week 1 vs. Panthers

Here are 6 players from the Jets to keep an eye on in Saturday’s preseason Week 1 matchup vs. the Panthers.

The New York Jets took part in the Hall of Fame Game against the Cleveland Browns to begin their preseason schedule, losing the game 21-16. Following last week’s preseason defeat to the Browns, the Jets will take on the Carolina Panthers on Saturday in their second preseason contest.

For the second straight week, New York isn’t going to have many of its starters logging snaps versus Carolina. With Aaron Rodgers in street clothes again, Zach Wilson is drawing the start and Tim Boyle will follow the former first-round pick.

Ahead of Saturday’s exhibition matchup with the Panthers, here are six players to watch on the Jets.

The Athletic names Florida safety Trey Dean III as UDFA with best chance to make roster

Which UDFA do you think can make the Jets roster this year?

The Jets signed 13 undrafted rookie free agents ahead of last weekend’s rookie minicamp, hoping to potentially find another diamond in the rough. Over the past few years a couple of undrafted rookies found a way to crack the 53-man roster, including running back Zonovan Knight and safety Tony Adams last year and defensive end Bryce Huff in 2020.

Who could be that player in 2023? The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt ranked the 13 players based on who has the best chance to make the roster this season and the top player is Florida safety Trey Dean III.

Here’s what Rosenblatt had to say about Dean:

He tested poorly in the 40 but posted elite results in the three-cone (6.69 seconds) and bench press (25) for safeties, both of which would’ve ranked highly not only this year but for many years running. The Jets have no safeties behind Chuck Clark and Jordan Whitehead who have proven enough to be locked into any role, so Dean can seriously push to be the third or fourth safety on the depth chart.

He’s versatile — he has some experience playing cornerback, too — and Brugler wrote that he has “promising length, toughness and loose movements” even if he has to work on his recognition in coverage. Most intriguing: Brugler wrote that his best NFL fit is as “a matchup weapon against tight ends.”

The competition behind Clark and Whitehead will certainly be intriguing to watch. Dean will have an opportunity to beat out Adams, Ashtyn Davis and Will Parks. Dean could also add some future depth, if not play his way into a starting role by 2024. Whitehead, Clark and Davis are all set to be free agents after this season.

Being a “matchup weapon against tight ends” could also be extremely valuable for the Jets with Dean, especially against a team like the Buffalo Bills, who already had Dawson Knox in the mix and just drafted Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid in the first round of this year’s draft. If Dean can help the Jets’ defense in that regard, that could add another layer to what is already a strong defense.

Dean will be very interesting to watch in camp and the preseason. We’ll see if he can crack the 53-man roster.

Retooling the defensive line and adding speed in this Browns Mock Draft

Giving Jim Schwartz tools to work with.

The entire NFL world is in Indianapolis getting up close and personal with the top prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns will have a close eye on the defensive linemen and wide receiver drills. It’s also the chance for teams to talk to each other about possible trades as free agency kicks off in a couple of weeks.

The Browns have got to find a dynamic fast playmaker at wide receiver as well as retool the entire defensive line outside Myles Garrett. Let’s take a look at how the Browns do all this in this Cleveland Browns mock draft.
