Florida football running back named SEC Freshman of the Week

Gators freshman running back Jadan Baugh wins the award following his five touchdown performance vs. Kentucky.

Florida football true freshman running back Jadan Baugh was named the SEC Freshman of the Week following his incredible performance in the Gators’ win over the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 8.

Because of Montrell Johnson Jr.‘s unavailability for the game due to an injury, Baugh served as Florida’s lead back and ran all over Kentucky’s defense.

The freshman was a workhorse on Saturday night, running for 106 yards on 22 carries and scoring a total of five touchdowns.

Baugh matched a program record set by Tim Tebow in 2007 and Trey Burton in 2010, achieving the most rushing touchdowns in a single game by a true freshman.

“Gives me confidence,” Baugh said about his performance against Kentucky. “But also gives my team, too, as in we know we could have did this as an offense and a defense. Like the defense played great today. That gave us the opportunity on offense to do what we did today.”Head coach Billy Napier gave praise to not just the offensive line, but the surrounding positions that helped make Florida’s run game successful.

“We ran it good last week, you know,” Napier said after the game. “I think here for a couple weeks in a row—look, it comes down to having a good plan, having a hat for a hat, and then got a ton of people this contribute to the run game. Not just the offensive line. The tight ends, receivers, obviously the quarterback in the middle of that as well.”

Coming up for Florida

The Gators are off next week due to their bye week. The next matchup for Florida will be against the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville. That game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ABC.

Former Gator, NFL champion will be this week’s Mr. Two Bits

Super Bowl LII champion and master of the “Philly Special” Trey Burton will be the honorary Mr. Two Bits for the Tennessee matchup.

“Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for the Gators, stand up and holler.”

A former member of the Florida football team, Super Bowl LII champion, and passer in the legendary “Philly Special” will be the honorary Mr. Two Bits in this week’s contest between the Gators and No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers.

Retired NFL veteran [autotag]Trey Burton[/autotag] will don the yellow button-up and striped tie to lead the “Two Bits” chant. Burton returns to a football field after retiring in 2020, playing tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears.

Burton has been away from the beautiful game to be a part of his family but he’s excited to return to The Swamp.

“I haven’t been back for a game in a while,” Burton said. “I’m going to be so dialed in for this.”

Burton plans to bring his wife, Yesenia, and three kids, Ariella, Jaxon, and Kaia, to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium so they can also enjoy the atmosphere.

“I’ve been hyping them all week, and they can’t wait,” Burton said. “They were born to go to a game.”

The Florida Gators start their conference slate on Saturday with the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers coming to town. The rivalry game will be broadcast on ESPN at 7 p.m. EDT.

Here’s what former Gators said about Florida QB Anthony Richardson

Three former Gators were asked about Anthony Richardson after meeting with the team last week and they couldn’t help but be praise the Gators’ starter.

Over 100 former Florida Gators were in town to view UF’s practice on Friday, and Gators Online checked in with three of them to get their take on starting quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag].

Up first is [autotag]Trey Burton[/autotag], who played at Florida from 2010 to 2013. Originally recruited as a quarterback, Burton wound up playing multiple offensive positions for [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag] before embarking on a seven-year NFL career that he hopes to get another chance at. Although he spent much of his time in the pros as a tight end or halfback, Burton’s most famous moment came as a quarterback on the Philly Special trick play by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 Super Bowl. It’s safe to say that Burton knows what he takes to succeed at the next level, and his comments on Richardson served as a fairly strong endorsement.

“Your first impression ‘you’re like, damn, this kid plays quarterback? He’s just a physical monster,” Burton said. “The kid looks so impressive, just height and size, and he has a cannon for an arm. I’m really excited to watch the progression from last year, whether it’s reading defenses or getting everybody in the right play, in the right situation. And it seems like from what I hear from other people, just the leadership role he’s taken has just excelled over the last couple of years, so we’ll see what happens.”

Former Florida linebacker [autotag]Brandon Siler[/autotag], who played on the 2006 national championship team, also noticed that Richardson had NFL size.

“When I came back I talked with him for a little bit but my first impression of him is that he’s huge,” Siler said. “The dude’s legs are like this. He’s crazy big. When I look at a guy like him, that’s an NFL body. You just have to put it together and I’m pretty sure this year he’s going to hit that thing running that rock out and showing you exactly why and what he can do with that body.”

Defensive end [autotag]Kevin Carter[/autotag] was the final UF alumnus to chime in on Richardson. Carter was a four-year letterman during the Spurrier year who went on to a 14-year NFL career. Now he serves as an analyst for CBS, and he gave the scouting report on Florida’s first-year starter.

“Severely talented. Just amazingly talented. What he has to work on is something that can’t be quantified. It’s something that is poise, patience in the pocket, and decision-making. That’s something that is an art form.”

Carter said that Richardson needs to keep himself healthy too for the Gators to succeed. Raising his football IQ should come naturally as he gets more reps as a starter, and Carter reminded everyone that it’s also on the coaches to offensive coordinator to help develop such a special talent.

Report: Jags workout TE Trey Burton

The Jags are down one tight end with James O’Shaughnessy going on IR, and as a result, Urban Meyer is looking at a former player of his from his days in Gainesville.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars currently being thin at the tight end position due to James O’Shaughnessy going on injured reserve, they’ve turned to the free-agent market to see if they can find help. And while they haven’t necessarily followed through with a signing, they worked out former Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts tight end Trey Burton.

Many fans will recognize Burton from his time with the Florida Gators where he was a utility player (played quarterback, fullback, tight end, and receiver) on offense for Jags coach Urban Meyer, then eventually Will Muschamp.

Burton entered the league as an undrafted player with the Eagles and spent four seasons with them. He was a part of the team when they won Super Bowl LII and registered a touchdown pass to quarterback Nick Foles on a “Philly Special” trick play. Afterward, he spent two seasons with the Bears, then spent 2020 with the Colts. He entered this season with 159 catches for 1,532 yards and 15 touchdowns.

As it stands, the Jags have Chris Manhertz, Jacob Hollister, and Luke Farrell on their active roster. They also have Matt Sokol on their practice squad, too.

LOOK: Former Colts teammate comments on Jonathan Taylor’s elite work ethic

Shortly afterward, former Colts tight end Trey Burton shared his experience working with Taylor last season in a reply to the tweet. The …

On Friday morning, Pro Football Focus posted a video on their Twitter showing former Wisconsin and current Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor making a fantastic deep grab from new quarterback Carson Wentz in offseason workouts.

Shortly afterward, former Colts tight end Trey Burton shared his experience working with Taylor last season in a reply to the tweet. The free-agent TE mentions the work ethic of Taylor, and how he catches 30 to 50 passes in between periods at practice.

The former Badger’s outstanding work ethic and talent have defined his prolific collegiate career and the outstanding beginning of his NFL career. Like Burton, I believe Taylor will be playing in the NFL for a long time.

Veteran TE options that could still make sense for the Cardinals

The Cardinals still need some depth in a few areas – one of those areas of need is at tight end.

The Arizona Cardinals still need some depth in a few areas, and have cleared out the cap space to be able to do so. One of those areas of need is at tight end.

They might wait until after the NFL draft so that it won’t count against any compensatory picks, and most of the tight ends on the market are there for a reason, so it’s unlikely they would sign any to a long-term deal.

They ideally would need someone with a bit more receiving prowess than Maxx Williams, who is a phenomenal run blocker but has not produced many catches in his tenure with the team.

Here are some options out there still for the Cardinals to try.

6 pending free agents the Colts should let walk

Indy should let these players walk in free agency.

While the playoffs are going on, the Indianapolis Colts will be hard at work figuring out their plan for the offseason. This includes which players to re-sign before free agency and which players to let walk.

The Colts currently have 20 players set to hit free agency as either unrestricted free agents (UFA) or restricted free agents (RFA) so there are a lot of decisions to make. Even if the Colts want to retain everyone, they won’t be able to.

After taking a look at which players the Colts should re-sign, let’s see which pending free agents Indy should let walk this offseason.

7 waiver wire targets in fantasy football for Week 13

Waiver Wire targets for Week 13.

Some fantasy football managers may be starting the playoffs this week and if so, congratulations! Others may not be so lucky. As the fight for a league title continues, it’s imperative to make last chance moves to bolster your roster.

The player that could put your team over the top this week could be available on the waiver wire, and maybe scooping him up before your opponent has the chance is part of your strategy. Still, there is a lot of value out there.

Here are seven waiver wire targets for Week 13:

Studs and Duds from Colts’ 45-26 loss to Titans

Studs and Duds from the Week 12 loss.

The Indianapolis Colts (7-4) were dominated from the start by the Tennessee Titans (8-3) en route to a 45-26 loss at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

By the time the first half was over, the Colts were facing a seemingly insurmountable deficit. The Titans rode Derrick Henry to a halftime lead of 35-14 and even though the defense showed some life in the second half, it wasn’t enough to come away with a win.

Here are the studs and duds from the Week 12 loss:

Week 4 Inactives: Bears S Sherrick McManis, QB Tyler Bray inactive vs. Colts

The Chicago Bears released their inactives for their Week 4 contest against the Indianapolis Colts, where there aren’t many surprises.

The Chicago Bears released their inactives for their Week 4 contest against the Indianapolis Colts, where there aren’t many surprises.

Defensive back and special teams ace Sherrick McManis won’t play after suffering a hamstring injury last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, which is a huge loss for Chicago’s special teams.

After some crazy speculation following quarterback Tyler Bray’s promotion to the active roster, the practice squad QB is officially inactive against the Colts, which makes the move all the more puzzling.

Also inactive for the Bears are running back Artavis Pierce, receiver Riley Ridley, offensive lineman Arlington Hambright and nose tackle Daniel McCullers.

As for the Colts, former Bears tight end Trey Burton is active. Burton was activated off injured reserve this week after suffering a calf injury during training camp.

The Bears and Colts kick things off at 3:25 p.m. CT.
