Colts’ training camp roster preview: S Trevor Denbow

Next up in our Colts’ training camp roster preview is safety Trevor Denbow. Here is a look back at his 2023 season and what’s ahead in 2024.

Veterans and rookies for the Indianapolis Colts will report for training camp on July 24th, with the first practice taking place on July 25th.

Between now and then I will be previewing the Colts’ 91-man roster with a look back at each player’s 2023 season, along with what’s ahead for 2024.

I’ll be going through the Colts’ roster alphabetically, so up next is safety Trevor Denbow. To stay up to date with our other previews, be sure to head over to Colts Wire.

2023 Season Review

A 2022 undrafted rookie, Denbow emerged as a core special teams player for the Colts last season. His 341 total snaps were the third-most on the team, as Denbow consistently played across four phases, which included the kick return and coverage units, along with the punt return and coverage units.

In addition to that, Denbow’s 13 total tackles were the most on the team. The next closest were Nick Cross and Segun Olubi with eight. And out of the 188 players league-wide who played at least 230 special teams snaps, Denbow ranked 39th in PFF’s special teams grade.

Defensively, Denbow saw just seven snaps last season. During his college days at SMU, Denbow spent most of his snaps playing around the line of scrimmage, either lined up in the box or at the nickel.

2024 Season Preview

Given Denbow’s ability to contribute on special teams, it seems fairly safe to assume that he’ll be on the Colts’ initial 53-man roster once again. Last year, the Colts initially rostered only four safeties, and Denbow was one of them.

Perhaps the big question around Denbow this summer will be his development as a defender, considering that the Colts find themselves a bit shorthanded at the safety position currently, with Daniel Scott out for the season.

One of the bigger competitions that’ll take place during training camp is between Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas for the starting free safety role. Unless an outside addition is made, that is going to remain a two-man battle. However, if injury-wise the Colts find themselves in a pinch at safety this season, as mentioned, Denbow’s previous college experience came as a box safety rather than playing deep, where a need potentially already exists.

Also on the roster at safety are Marcel Dabo, Michael Tutsie, and Kendell Brooks.

Colts’ year-end awards from 2023 season

Handing out awards for the 2023 Colts.

The 2023 season ended in disappointing fashion for the Indianapolis Colts, but there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the future given what they showed throughout the campaign.

Considering where the Colts were just one year ago at this time, the outlook of the franchise is far more positive. They have a strong leader in Shane Steichen, a young quarterback in Anthony Richardson who shows promise, and some solid pieces to work off of this offseason.

But before we get into the thick of the offseason plans and predictions, it’s time to take a look back at the 2023 season and hand out some awards.

From MVP to the biggest disappointment, here are the Colts’ year-end awards from the 2023 campaign:

Colts sign 9 to futures contracts among several roster moves

The Colts made 14 roster moves Monday to begin the 2024 offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts officially got their offseason underway Monday by making several roster moves, including the signings of nine players to Reserve/Future contracts, the team announced.

Along with the nine futures contracts the team signed, all of which include players from the practice squad, the Colts also signed four players to one-year contract extensions while waiving another player. So in total, the Colts made 14 moves.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 13. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. It is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 14 moves the Colts made to begin the offseason:

Previewing the safety position for the Colts entering training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to return for training camp at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield with their first practice being held July 26.

Before then, we’ll be previewing each position, giving our takes on the starters, position battles and projected depth chart entering camp under the new regime.

The safety position for the Colts will have two of its starters returning for the second year under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, while the hope is that they can get some production from the depth in the room during the regular season.

Madden 24: Launch ratings for Colts WRs, safeties

Check out the Madden NFL 24 launch ratings for Colts WRs and safeties.

With training camp right around the corner for the majority of teams, EA Sports has started unveiling “Madden NFL 24” launch ratings ahead of the release date for the game.

The first group to be revealed in these launch ratings were the wide receivers and safeties. Only one member of the Colts at these positions was given a rating above 80, which was wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Here’s a look at the launch ratings for the wide receivers and safeties on the Colts in “Madden NFL 24:”

11 winners from Colts offseason workout program

Taking a look at 11 winners from the Colts’ offseason workout program.

The Indianapolis Colts have roughly one month until the arrival of training camp, which is when the real competition for the final roster spots will take place.

Though we should be careful about how much information we take seriously during the spring practices, it never hurts to monitor the players who stand out in OTAs and minicamp. Jobs are not won in the spring, but the foundation for the competitions is being laid out.

Here are 11 winners from the Colts offseason workout program in 2023:

5 safeties the Colts can replace Daniel Scott with

Here are a few options the Colts could consider in order to replace Daniel Scott.

The Indianapolis Colts revealed some unfortunate news Wednesday, placing rookie safety Daniel Scott on the injured reserve list after he suffered a torn ACL on the final play of OTAs last week.

A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft out of California, Scott was expected to contribute significantly on special teams while providing depth as a versatile player in the safety room.

Because Scott was placed on the injured reserve list before the 53-man roster has been finalized, he will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

Here are five safeties the Colts can replace Scott with going into training camp next month:

Colts elevate two from practice squad for Week 18

The Colts elevated two players from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated wide receiver Keke Coutee and safety Trevor Denbow from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Saturday.

It seems the Colts will be seeing the return of wide receiver Ashton Dulin (concussion) so they should have a full wide receiver room. Coutee also will provide some help on special teams.

Denbow will be called up likely to take a role on special teams considering the injuries that have hit the secondary. There’s a chance the Colts could be without cornerbacks Brandon Facyson (concussion) and Stephon Gilmore (wrist), both of which are questionable.

Colts sign S Trevor Denbow to practice squad

The Colts brought back S Trevor Denbow to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed safety Trevor Denbow to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

Denbow was waived after the Colts signed defensive end Khalid Kareem from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad in order to add some depth to the defensive line.

Denbow signed with the Colts as an undrafted rookie free agent out of SMU following the 2022 NFL draft. He impressed the Colts enough to earn a roster spot during final cuts but suffered an injury that kept him on the injured reserve list for the first eight weeks of the season.

He made his season debut in Week 9 and has served as a special teams player—one the Colts believe could be a core player in that unit.

With a fully healthy safety room, Denbow goes to the practice squad where the Colts hope to continue his development.
