Three Ohio State football players named to the Maxwell watch list

Three Ohio State football players appeared among the 85 named to the Maxwell Award watch list. #GoBucks

It’s watch list season y’all, and that must mean that the college football season is drawing nigh. And with the talent that Ohio State returns, especially on the offensive side of the ball, you would expect many players to get preseason notoriety as we get closer and closer to kickoff for the 2022 season.

On that note, the fine folks at the Maxwell Football Club released the 2022 watch list for the Maxwell Award on Monday and three Buckeye players are among the 85 total names.

The Maxwell award is named after Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, a Swarthmore College football player, coach, and sportswriter. It was first handed out in 1937.

You can probably guess the three Buckeyes on the watch list, but just in case, we’ve identified them for you with a quick little bio on each.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2022 schedule breakdown: Ohio State

Iowa’s schedule features Big Ten giant Ohio State. Who are the Buckeyes to worry about in Iowa’s pursuit to pull off the upset?

This is the big one. There might be more important games later in the season against conference rivals Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska, but no team on Iowa’s schedule is more talented than this Buckeyes squad. To be fair, you can say the same for pretty much any team preparing for a dance with Ohio State this year.

For the Hawkeyes, this is easily their toughest stretch of the season. While they shouldn’t overlook Rutgers, the schedule really ramps up midway through with appearances from the Big Ten’s elite.

A three-week stretch that includes Michigan in an emotionally Big Ten championship game rematch, and a trip to Ohio State would be noteworthy for any team in the country. The Hawkeyes also have to worry about pesky Illinois sandwiched between those two behemoths as well. We will all know after this gauntlet just how much of a contender Iowa plans on being in 2022.

Rose Bowl champions in 2021, Ohio State returns a ton of talent, including possibly the best player in the nation at a few positions. It is national championship or bust for Ryan Day’s squad. They might not be in the same recruiting neighborhood or have the same national attention, but Iowa will be an extremely tough test for the Buckeyes with their strong defense.

Iowa isn’t the only team with something to prove this year. Ohio State once again looks to have a national championship-winning offense on paper, but don’t forget they lost some talent. Wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson were both 2022 NFL draft first-round picks and tight end Jeremey Ruckert was a third-rounder. The Buckeyes also lost two talented offensive linemen to the NFL in Nicholas Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford. Here are the names to watch for a bit of a new-look Buckeyes.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson provides ultimate feast for his offensive linemen

TreVeyon Henderson knows what it’s all about — taking his O-lineman to a nice dinner. #GoBucks

The best running backs in the game of football know that they can’t do it on their own. Even at a place like Ohio State, the most talented ball-carriers rely on the big uglies to lean on the defense and open up holes to gash the defense with big plays.

It’s clear by what we saw shared on Twitter that OSU running back TreVeyon Henderson gets it. He knows that he’s nothing without the guys up front changing the line of scrimmage. Because of that, Henderson apparently treated those buffet eaters to a mighty fine meal by the looks of it.

In case you didn’t get a chance to catch a spread that anyone would be salivating over, do yourself a favor and take just a bit of time to watch Henderson providing a meal, laughter, and fun for the offensive line at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse.

There was also some swag handed out as well as appreciation.

I have to admit, I’ve never eaten at Jeff Ruby’s but after this video, it’s going in my fine dining rotation. And I don’t know about you, but getting a meal and parting gifts like that will make a guy block a little harder and stay engaged just a little longer.

Top 70 players’ odds for the 2022 Heisman Trophy per Tipico Sportsbook

Where does your school’s star stand in terms of Heisman Trophy odds per Tipico Sportsbook? Take a look at the top 70 players here.

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young won the 2021 Heisman Trophy after passing for 4,322 yards and 43 touchdowns against just four interceptions in the regular season and the SEC championship game win over Georgia combined.

It was Young’s close to the regular season and that aforementioned SEC championship game win over the Bulldogs that helped him cinch college football’s highest honor.

In a 42-35 win over Arkansas on Nov. 20, 2021, Young completed 31-of-40 passes for 559 yards and five touchdowns. Then, he directed a late comeback and subsequent four-overtime victory at Auburn where he finished with 317 passing yards and a pair of passing touchdowns against the Tigers.

Again, it was the 6-foot, 194 pound signal-caller’s performance in the Crimson Tide’s 41-24 SEC championship game triumph over Georgia that clinched it. Young completed 26-of-44 passes for 421 yards and three touchdowns and ran in another score to send Alabama to yet another College Football Playoff.

As a result, Alabama now has back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners. Young joined 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith. The Crimson Tide’s all-time list of Heisman Trophy winners also expanded to four following Young’s win.

All of those Crimson Tide Heisman Trophy winners have come under Alabama head football coach Nick Saban. The others were Alabama running backs Mark Ingram in 2009 and Derrick Henry in 2015.

Only one player, Ohio State running back Archie Griffin, has ever won the award in back-to-back seasons. That will be the task for Alabama’s Young. As the odds from Tipico Sportsbook indicate, he’s one of the big favorites to do just that.

What does the full top 70 players’ odds to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy look like? Let’s examine the landscape as college football enters the summer below.

Dillon Gabriel opens with fifth-best odds for the 2022 Heisman Trophy per Tipico Sportsbook

According to Tipico Sportsbook, Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel has the fifth-highest odds to win the Heisman trophy in 2022.

Heisman contention is a familiar place for the Oklahoma Sooners. [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag], [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag], and [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag] set an incredibly high standard for the quarterback position at Oklahoma in recent years.

Mayfield and Murray both won the Heisman and Hurts was a finalist. Heading into 2022, Spencer Rattler was expected to contend for the prestigious award and even after Caleb Williams took over, there were times it looked like he might interject himself into the Heisman discussion.

Though the Sooners experienced turnover at the most important position in football, they aren’t far off at the position from where they were in 2021.

The optimism that surrounds the Oklahoma Sooners heading into the 2022 season has a lot to do with the guys Brent Venables brought in to replace the key figures of the offense from 2021.

In order to keep the offense humming, Venables brought in Jeff Lebby as the offensive coordinator and Dillon Gabriel committed to Oklahoma just hours after Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal in January.

Gabriel, who was a highly-productive player at UCF may not be the favorite for the Heisman like previous quarterbacks for the Sooners, but coming in with the fifth-best odds certainly says something about the way Tipico Sportsbook feels about the Oklahoma offense.

The new starting quarterback for the Sooners comes in with the fifth-best odds to win the [autotag]Heisman Trophy[/autotag] at +3000 according to Tipico Sportsbook. That puts him tied with Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei, TreVeyon Henderson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba of Ohio State, Tyler Van Dyke of Miami, and Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss.

Gabriel comes in behind C.J. Stroud of Ohio State at +240, Alabama’s Bryce Young at +350, [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] at +750, and Texas‘ Bijan Robinson at +2000 and just ahead of [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag], who lands at +4000.

[autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], who’s expected to lead the Sooners in receiving in 2022 currently sits at +20000.

Top five returning all-purpose yard leaders in the Big Ten #GoBucks

The NFL draft is in the books and the annual spring games have come to an end across the Big Ten and it is time to start diving into who to watch and what to expect during the 2022 season. We already dove into the top five returning rushers, passersreceivers, overall scorers and kick return leaders returning in the Big Ten. I wanted to provide the top five returning all-purposes leaders in the Big Ten. All-purpose yardage is a great indicator of who is the most consistent playmaker on each roster.

Many of the names on this list are going to be familiar, but a few may surprise you.

Let’s get into it.

Top five returning touchdown scorers in the Big Ten

The NFL draft is in the books and the annual spring games have come to an end across the Big Ten and it is time to start diving into who to watch and what to expect during the 2022 season. We already dove into the top five returning rushers, passersreceivers, overall scorers and kick return leaders in the Big Ten, but in addition to the top five scorers, I thought it would be even more interesting to see who the top five returning touchdown scorers are.

The top overall scorers are usually kickers, but obviously, the top touchdown scorers provides a better idea of who are the top guns on offense to watch next season.

Let’s get into it.

Wisconsin RB Braelon Allen led all Big Ten running backs in this stat in 2021

Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen led all Big Ten rushers in this stat last season:

On Wednesday afternoon, Pro Football Focus ranked the top Big Ten running backs in yards per carry against an eight-man box from last season, and not surprisingly, Wisconsin RB Braelon Allen led all Big Ten rushers.

Related: Top five returning receiving leaders in the Big Ten

After a phenomenal freshman season where he battered and bruised Big Ten defenders, Allen averaged an outstanding 6.9 YPC against a packed box. Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson finished behind Allen with 6.7 YPC.

It was a joy to watch Allen’s physicality as a true freshman in the Big Ten last season, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take another big step with a full offseason with the team under his belt.

Top five returning scoring leaders in the Big Ten

The NFL draft is in the books and the annual spring games have come to an end across the Big Ten and it is time to start diving into who to watch and what to expect during the 2022 season. We already dove into the top five returning rushers and passers in the Big Ten, but the top five returning scorers may be even more interesting.

The top scorers are usually kickers, but it is important to remember that special teams win championships and it monitoring who is coming back is important to the landscape of the Big Ten. Like most of these lists, a Buckeye is going to kick it off!

Off we go.
