WATCH: Oklahoma DB Tre Norwood returns interception for a touchdown against Florida’s Kyle Trask

It didn’t take long for Oklahoma to jump ahead in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Florida. Tre Norwood delivered one of the biggest plays.

It didn’t take long for Oklahoma to jump ahead. After a five-play, 79-yard touchdown drive to start the Goodyear Cotton Bowl , Oklahoma’s defense came out and scored a touchdown of their own, intercepting Kyle Trask on Florida’s first play from scrimmage.

The interception is Norwood’s fifth this season as the redshirt junior has come on strong late in the season. He initially got a chance in the starting lineup filling in for Delarrin Turner-Yell, but played well enough to earn a starting spot at the nickelback position. His placement has served Oklahoma well as he’s now hauled in interceptions in both the Big 12 Championship and the Cotton Bowl.

Norwood’s performance resonates with the identity of the team this season, which centers around a defensive resurgence under Alex Grinch’s speed-d scheme. It’s largely been the reason for Oklahoma’s 7-game winning streak leading to a sixth-consecutive Big 12 title.

What Alex Grinch, Oklahoma players had to say about Florida ahead of Cotton Bowl

What defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and Oklahoma players had to say about Florida ahead of their matchup in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

No. 6 Oklahoma is set to conclude the wild 2020 season with a battle against No. 7 Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

The Sooners come in fresh off capturing a sixth consecutive Big 12 title a week and a half ago in a win over Iowa State. The victory was their seventh straight after falling into an early 1-2 hole to start the season.

Oklahoma has been led by their defense in the second half of the season, with a front seven that is among the best in the entire country. They’ll have their hands full with a potent Florida offense in this game, although the Gators will be missing multiple key contributors.

Last week at the Cotton Bowl virtual media day, defense coordinator Alex Grinch and Sooners players had the opportunity to give some thoughts on Florida ahead of their collision at AT&T Stadium. Here is what they had to say.

Watch Oklahoma’s Tre Norwood get a massive interception off of Iowa State Brock Purdy in the Big 12 Championship Game.

No. 10 Oklahoma is off to a hot start in the Big 12 Championship Game as they have a 17-0 lead currently in the second quarter.

They maintained that shutout due to a massive interception by cornerback Tre Norwood in the end zone off of a pass by Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy that was intended by tight end Charlie Kolar.

The big turnover killed what was the Cyclones’ most promising drive of the afternoon and kept all the momentum on the Sooner sideline. The interception is the fifth of Norwood’s career and his fourth this season.

Oklahoma currently holds a 17-0 lead on Iowa State in the late stages on the second quarter in Arlington.

Oklahoma football notebook: Alex Grinch, defensive players talk Wednesday

Ahead of Bedlam, Alex Grinch, Nik Bonitto, Ronnie Perkins, and Tre Norwood met with the media on Wednesday to discuss the latest.

No. 17/18 Oklahoma (5-2, 4-2) is set to retake the field at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday night when they host in-state foe No. 14 Oklahoma State (5-1, 4-1).

The Sooners are playing their best at the right time down the stretch in November, as has been the norm since Lincoln Riley came to Oklahoma. They’ve won four straight games and are playing better in nearly every facet of the game than they were early in the year.

Defensively, the Sooners have seen an uptick in just about every positive statistic since the return of Ronnie Perkins. His impact getting pressure on the quarterback to help force turnovers has been undeniable, and the team has spoke glowingly of how great it is to have him back on the field.

On Wednesday, defensive Coordinator Alex Grinch along with Perkins, Nik Bonitto and Tre Norwood met with the media to discuss the latest with the team with Bedlam just a few days away. Here is what they had to say.
