Alabama vs Cincinnati Cotton Bowl, College Football Playoff Preview

Okay, Group of Five. You had what it took to get into the club, but can you do anything with it? Out of the 32 College Football Playoff slots over the last eight years, Cincinnati is the first team outside of the Power Five to have a shot at winning the national title in the mini-tournament.

– The American Athletic Conference champion did what a Group of Five program needed to do. It went unbeaten, it had a splashy win – it was the only team to beat Notre Dame – and it got the job done with a conference championship.

It caught a break that there wasn’t a fourth option, but one win over the defending national champion could blow the lid off of any and all negative narratives.

This wasn’t an easy ride for Alabama. It had to replace the New England Patriot starting quarterback (Mac Jones), the Pittsburgh Steeler starting running back (Najee Harris), a Heisman-winning wide receiver (DeVonta Smith), the even better receiver (Jaylen Waddle), and a whole slew of other key parts.

And it’s still the 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.

– Bama was operating without a net after losing to Texas A&M in early October. It rolled through seven straight wins including the dominant 41-24 SEC Championship victory to get here. Consistency wasn’t a problem, there were issues on both lines, and the team needed to be bailed out time and again. More on that in a moment.

– Alabama is the lone College Football Playoff fixture in this. Georgia has been in once, but this makes it seven times in eight chances for the Tide. Win this, and the program will be one step away from its fourth CFP national title and Nick Saban’s eighth national championship.

Cincinnati is 0-3 all-time in New Year’s Six-caliber bowls – the most recent being last season’s 24-21 loss to Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Twitter reacts to Oklahoma’s Cotton Bowl blowout over Florida

The Twitter world reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners’ blowout victory over the Florida Gators in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

The No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners blew out the No. 7 Florida Gators Wednesday night in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic by a score of 55 – 20.   Granted the Gators were missing a number of key players, the loss was still and embarrassing one for Dan Mullen and the SEC in general.

Here is how the college football Twitter world reacted to Florida’s bad loss:

Oklahoma 55 Florida 20: Goodyear Cotton Bowl

10. Several things can be true at once here.

Yes, Florida was missing way too many of its top players. Yes, it’s almost impossible to just Next Man Up it when you’re replacing too many key parts. Yes, teams that lose the SEC Championship normally don’t get up for the bowl game after getting their hearts ripped out – going 2-4 in the last six bowl games. Yes, Florida didn’t have any real answers after making a good-fight mini-comeback early on, and yes, they really, really, really weren’t the team that was so strong throughout the 2020 regular season.

And …

9. Yes, it can be true that Oklahoma is very, very good right now.

It’s a different team than it was at the beginning of the season. It’s sharper, it took advantage of the opportunity, and it did what a good team is supposed to do in a situation like this and win and win big. It’s not Oklahoma’s fault that a bunch of Florida players didn’t want to play in this.

8. One game like this isn’t going to change anything, but …

The College Football Playoff needs to be expanded so it includes all Power Five conference champions. Yeah, yeah, yeah, again, all of those things about Florida are true, but as sharp as the Sooners were and the way they played, it’s not crazy to think they could do some damage in a bigger sort of tournament.

7. This is why the voting needs to be done after the bowls.

Kyle Trask had a marvelous season, it wasn’t his fault the top four receivers were gone, and there wasn’t anything he could do in a game like this, but he’s a finalist, and he wins 16-of-28 for 158 yards and three interceptions with no touchdown passes.

6. The Florida coaching staff tried.

It got quirky, it threw a bunch of things at the wall to try fixing the glitch, and Emory Jones at least gave Gator fans hope. He only hit 8-of-16 passes, but he tied for the team lead with 60 rushing yards on 11 carries. He made the game interesting in the rotation.

5. Misleading fun fact from this – it’s Lincoln Riley’s first bowl win.

It’s not fair to rip him in any way for being 0-3 in bowl games before this when those three were in the College Football Playoff, but there’s something to be said for winning the final game of a season. Again, give Oklahoma and Riley credit here. If the other side isn’t as strong as it should be, then win 55-20.

4. There’s no dogging Dan Mullen here.

It’ll be easy to hammer on defensive coordinator Todd Grantham after a rough season and with a defensive performance like this, but this was an impossible situation for the entire Florida program to deal with. This wasn’t some normal bowl game. You’re not going to beat the Big 12 champs with that sort of firepower when you’re missing so much talent. However, these types of losses stick to SEC coaches. SEC fan bases are able to use logic and reason to a point, but 55-20 is 55-20.

3. Spencer Rattler was just okay, and it was more than enough.

He’ll be one of the early favorites for the 2021 Heisman – Oklahoma has gone too long without a quarterback being in the mix for the thing – and in a game like this, not throwing a pick or making any big mistakes was enough. That’s being light with the praise, though – he completed 14-of-23 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 40 yards and a touchdown.

He was good, but his supporting cast was awesome.

2. Oklahoma was a different team with Rhamondre Stevenson.

The big, fast running back tore off 186 yards and a touchdown averaging over ten yards per carry. Marcus Major ran for 110 yards and a score, and the ground game pounded out 435 yards and three touchdowns averaging 11 yards per carry.

Three different Sooners caught touchdown passes, there were big plays after big plays, and it could’ve been a whole lot worse with just enough misfires to have kept this from getting even uglier earlier.

1. The bowl opt-out problem is a … problem

This year is obviously weirder than all others, but it’s also going to be the norm for these New Year’s Six bowl games that – come on, we’re all adults here – are mostly exhibitions. They’re fun, and they’re a huge deal for the teams, the players, and the fan bases, but there’s a reason why so many players with NFL talent skip out on them.

The Gators guys who opted out almost certainly play if this is some sort of a playoff game.

It’s okay. In a strange way, it’s actually better for Florida to get its young guys some meaningful work and more live game film to start working on spring ball. But something has to be fixed.

The lower-tier bowls normally won’t have the top teams with the top players – one or two guys might opt out, but not enough to make the game bad – and the NFL types aren’t going to skip the College Football Playoff. The New Year’s Six bowls, though, are going to have more and more of what we got in the Cotton.

Even so, 1,205 yards of total offense, a ton of big plays, and an entertaining show for a 55-20 blowout – the 2020 Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic was worth the watch.

Oklahoma players perform famous ‘Malcolm Kelly Rap’ in Cotton Bowl postgame celebration

Oklahoma players busted into a rendition of the famous “Malcom Kelly Rap” during the postgame celebration of the win in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma closed out their 2020 season with a 55-20 destruction of Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

The fans really enjoyed the win, busting out a classic “S-E-C” chant as the game was well in-hand in the fourth quarter. The players were certainly enjoying themselves too.

Wide receiver Charleston Rambo went with the “Gator Chomp” after scoring a touchdown to extend their already large lead, and dozens of players broke into a rendition of the famous Malcom Kelly freestyle locker room rap from over a decade ago.

Somewhere, Kelly is smiling.

The Sooners finished a wild 2020 season on a high note and an eight-game winning streak. They now will look to take the great deal of momentum they currently have with them into a good offseason and then the 2021 season.

Three reasons Oklahoma won 55-20 against Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl

Three reasons why Oklahoma dominated Florida 55-20 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma capped off their 2020 season in about as good of a way as you possibly can in a 55-20 demolition of Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The Sooners jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead on the legs of three Kyle Trask interceptions, one of which being a pick six by Tre Norwood.

The Gators would claw back in it, working the lead down to 17-13 midway through the second quarter. But after a 36-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Rattler to Theo Wease, Oklahoma never looked back.

This was an impressive performance on a big stage for Lincoln Riley’s group, and one that should provide some good momentum going into the offseason. Here are three reasons why it happened:

WATCH: Oklahoma fans break out ‘S-E-C’ chants during blowout against Florida in Cotton Bowl

Oklahoma fans busted out an “S-E-C” chant during the Sooners blowout of Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma ended their 2020 season in style.

The Sooners have absolutely lambasted Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night, completely running away with the game in the second half.

Of course, there are few things Oklahoma fans enjoy more than beating a team from the SEC. So, they took advantage of the opportunity of a game well in-hand on a national stage to break into a good old-fashioned “S-E-C” chant.

The pettiness level is at an all-time high, but given the comments from Gators linebacker James Houston last week, it is certainly to be expected.

The Sooners currently hold a gigantic 55-13 lead late in the fourth quarter in Arlington.

Oklahoma starting TE Austin Stogner back for Cotton Bowl against Florida, been out since Kansas game

Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner is making his return to action Wednesday night when the Sooners take on Florida in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma is getting a big piece of their offense back.

Tight end Austin Stogner has been out since suffering an injury in the Kansas game all the way back on Nov. 7th. He will now make his return to the Sooners lineup this evening in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Florida.

On the year Stogner has caught 25 passes for 410 yards and three touchdowns, becoming a really nice safety blanket for quarterback Spencer Rattler. His return to the lineup is understandably huge for the offense and it will be interesting to see how much of a role he will have in this first game back.

This news comes on the heels of the Gators being reportedly without several key defensive players including their leading tackler in linebacker Ventrell Miller. So while Florida’s defense has gotten thinner, Oklahoma’s offense has gotten stronger.

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl is set to get underway later this evening at 7:00 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Florida will reportedly be missing key defensive players for Cotton Bowl with Oklahoma

Florida will be missing multiple key defensive players for their matchup with Oklahoma Wednesday night in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

Florida’s roster keeps on getting thinner for Wednesday’s Cotton Bowl matchup with Oklahoma.

The players missing on the offensive side of the ball has been well-documented in the lead up to the game, but it appears the Gators may be just as thin on defense as well. It is being reported that they will be without multiple key defenders including their leading tackler in linebacker Ventrell Miller.

An already struggling unit, the Florida defense is now even thinner which thus provides Lincoln Riley and the Sooners offense a fantastic opportunity to strike early and often to get their own defense a lead to work with.

It will be interesting to see just how many players the Gators will be without, but based off of the reports it seems to be certainly an impactful number. The Goodyear Cotton Bowl is set to kick off later this evening at 7:00 p.m. CT in Arlington.

When, where, how to watch, how to stream Goodyear Cotton Bowl between Oklahoma-Florida

Everything you need to know for Oklahoma’s matchup with Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night.

No. 6 Oklahoma is set to conclude a truly unforgettable 2020 season on Wednesday night when they do battle with No. 7 Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The Sooners are fresh off winning a sixth consecutive Big 12 title a week and a half ago with a win over Iowa State in the conference championship game. The seventh-straight victory got them up to an 8-2 mark on the year after the early stumbles.

The Gators come in having had their regular season come to a disappointing finish. After being right in the thick of the College Football Playoff chase the bulk of the season. they took an inexplicable home loss to LSU followed by a close loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

Now Florida comes into this game just trying to take some positive momentum into the offseason led by their Heisman finalist quarterback Kyle Trask. It won’t be easy though given the opponent and the fact they will be missing several offensive playmakers for the game.

This is the first time these two historic programs will have met since they collided in the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship Game which saw the Gators claim the title in a 24-14 win.

What Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, Florida head coach Dan Mullen said about the Cotton Bowl

What Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley and Florida head coach Dan Mullen had to say about the Cotton Bowl set for Wednesday night.

No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 7 Florida are set to collide in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on Wednesday night in one of the most highly-anticipated non-College Football Playoff bowl matchups.

It is two historic programs meeting for just the second time ever, and both are certainly among the very best teams in the country that didn’t quite qualify for the national semifinals.

There are many matchups within the game that provide intrigue, with the Gators Heisman finalist quarterback Kyle Trask against the Sooners powerful defensive front being one good one in particular.

On Tuesday, as well as at last week’s Cotton Bowl virtual media day, Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley and Florida head coach Dan Mullen met with the media to discuss the game and each other’s respective programs. Here is what they had to say:
