Here’s where Tre Mann goes in the latest CBS NBA mock draft

Former Florida guard Tre Mann is projected to go to the Houston Rockets at No. 23 in the latest CBS Sports mock draft.

Following one of the most surprising bounce-back seasons in college basketball, former Florida guard Tre Mann seems to be a shoo-in to go in the first round of the NBA draft next month. The former five-star recruit wasn’t able to find much of a role as a true freshman, averaging 5.3 points per game, but he increased that number to 16 this year, becoming UF’s leading scorer and the de facto leader of the team following the loss of Keyontae Johnson for the season.

It seems his rapid improvement caught the attention of more than just the Florida fanbase. Mann declared for the draft without an agent, and he received an invite to the NBA combine last week. The only remaining question is, where will he land.

Though some project Mann as a late lottery pick, the latest CBS Sports mock draft from Colin Ward-Henninger projects him falling a bit later than that, to the Houston Rockets at No. 23.

I don’t rate Mann as highly as some other draft evaluators, but the Rockets would be lucky to get him at this point in the draft. His scoring ability is undeniable, and his shot creation is among the best in the draft. His short arms make him play smaller than he is defensively, and he needs to work on his playmaking ability, but Houston will give him the opportunity to develop through his mistakes.

Mann will clearly take some development at the next level, but this projection is a good bit lower than where CBS Sports ranks Mann. He’s the No. 10 overall prospect in the draft and the No. 4 point guard, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see him go earlier than this.

The Rockets already have one of the league’s best point guards in John Wall, but the rest of the guard group could use another addition. Mann could be a better fit at shooting guard in the NBA, where he’d be in the rotation alongside Eric Gordon and Avery Bradley.

Mann will almost undoubtedly end Florida’s drought of first-round picks that dates back to 2012, and he will also be UF’s first drafted player since Erik Murphy in 2013. On a team that could use an influx of young talent like Houston, Mann could be an early difference-maker.

Florida guard Tre Mann appears to hold draft workout with Rockets

Judging by a picture from his Instagram page, it appears that the 6-foot-4 guard had a workout with Houston on Thursday.

Judging by a post on his Instagram page, it appears University of Florida product Tre Mann worked out for the Houston Rockets on Thursday. The 20-year-old, who indicated in the post that it was his first team workout, recently declared for the NBA’s 2021 draft.

During his sophomore season with the Gators in 2020-21, Mann averaged 16.0 points (45.9% FG, 40.2% on 3-pointers), 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 32.4 minutes per game. Here’s how For The Win draft expert Bryan Kalbrosky describes Mann’s talent in his latest mock draft:

Florida’s Tre Mann was simply elite as a shot creator who displayed drastic year-over-year improvements as a shooter and as a playmaker.

He has the dribbling and the pull-up jumper necessary to break down his defenders and he has good positional size, literally growing two inches and adding 15 pounds between his freshman and sophomore year.

Kalbrosky projected Mann to be taken at No. 20 overall, which is in range of at least two first-round picks owned by the Rockets — No. 23 (from Portland) and No. 24 (from Milwaukee). They may also have a third pick in the same general range at No. 18 (from Miami via Oklahoma City), should OKC’s right to swap picks with Houston activate as a result of an undesirable outcome in the June 22 draft lottery.

Yet, even if Mann’s stock rises above the 18-24 range, it’s certainly possible that the Rockets could still select him by packaging multiple picks to trade up in the draft order. (The same logic would also apply, of course, to anyone else that general manager Rafael Stone might want.)

See below for a highlight mix of Mann’s play at Florida.

2021 NBA Draft Big Board 4.0: Top 100 prospects pre-combine and lottery

Now that the early entry list is officially out and combine invitations have been sent out, the 2021 NBA draft class is starting to finalize.

Now that the early entry deadline has passed and combine invitations have been sent out, the 2021 NBA draft class is starting to finalize.

Last year, the NCAA tournament and the combine were both canceled due to the pandemic. That made evaluations much tougher for scouts and front offices around the league. This year, the pre-draft process feels somewhat normal again for top basketball prospects who are set to join the pros.

As a new class of players prepares to turn professional, here is how we would currently rank this class based on what we have seen from them so far, with some of my picks that are higher than other experts have them ranked.

Draft stock watch: Davion Mitchell, Josh Giddey, BJ Boston and more

With the NBA draft lottery and combine less than two weeks out, we can reflect on the biggest risers and fallers in this draft class so far.

Our aggregate mock drafts track where each draft prospect ranks across trusted mock drafts. As we face the calm before the storm, these rankings help us track all of the progress and regression each player faced during this past season.

Preseason rankings are here and the latest update, our fifth edition, is here.

Much like our ongoing free agency series at HoopsHype, we will continue to update with new posts about whose draft stock has gone up – and down – the most as we get closer to the big night.

2021 NBA Mock Draft 4.0: Player comparisons and predicting all 60 picks

Who should the Houston Rockets select if they get the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft?

While fans are now enjoying the NBA postseason, there are several teams that didn’t make the playoffs with full attention on the draft.

Now that the regular season and play-in tournament are both complete, the order is set for picks No. 15 to No. 60. However, we will have to wait until the lottery on June 22.

For more details on odds for when each team in the lottery will be on the clock, you can read this post by our own Charles Curtis.

Meanwhile, we also have a pretty clear idea of which prospects have opted to declare for the 2021 NBA draft. But any stragglers still have until May 30 to make their decision in order to be eligible for draft consideration.

Scouts and executives around the league will have an even better feel for this class come June 21, when the combine begins in Chicago.

After that, all those who hired either NCAA-certified agents or do not already have any representation have until July 19 to decide if they wish to remain in the class and forego their collegiate eligibility or return to school.

Until then, however, this is how we predict the two rounds of the 2021 NBA draft will shake out:

Tre Mann among 2021 NBA draft class’ best shooters

According to Eric Fawcett in an article for NBA.com, former Florida point guard Tre Mann is one of the best shooters in this draft class.

[mm-video type=video id=01f6nb1e8h4kbfmkp3sf playlist_id=none player_id=01f1jz1vgtfhzk6ner image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f6nb1e8h4kbfmkp3sf/01f6nb1e8h4kbfmkp3sf-c529f61e10224c78ffac21953fe43237.jpg]

You’d be hard-pressed to find a player in the country who was more improved during the 2020-21 season than Florida point guard Tre Mann. After an unimpressive true freshman season that saw Mann struggle to find a role in the offense, he burst onto the scene as a sophomore.

With Keyontae Johnson‘s collapse ending the season of the Gators’ best player early, Mann smoothly stepped into the on-court leadership role. He was easily UF’s best facilitating point guard since Chris Chiozza this season, and he was Florida’s leading scorer.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

For his efforts, he’s seeing consistent first-round draft projections, with many expecting Mann to go toward the end of the lottery. In a piece for NBA.com written by Eric Fawcett, Mann is listed as one of the best shooters in the entire draft.

Late game. Shot clock winding down. One on one. In these high-stress moments at the end of games, what kind of shot are you most likely to see? The step back.

This shot has taken over basketball, the quintessential scoring move for every guard looking to bury their opponent in the final moments of the game. The best player in the draft at this move? Tre Mann.

There is a smoothness to the way Mann plays the game as if he’s gliding across the hardwood, and when it comes to creating space for a step back, he can lull defenders to sleep before exploding off his front foot, getting into his shooting motion and drilling it. Mann hit 41 percent of his step back jumpers last season (via InStat) which speaks to his touch from the outside. Overall, Mann hit 40.2 percent of his 3s last season and the high degree of difficulty for the majority of his attempts makes this percentage admirable. NBA teams who are looking for guards that can create their own shots will love what they see from Mann.

As Fawcett describes, Mann’s game is made so dangerous by his efficacy with the step-back. That shot is definitely playing a big factor in his rising draft stock, and if he turns into a solid starter in the NBA that will likely be a major reason why.

Mann will almost certainly be a first-round pick, but where he goes in that range has some fluidity. Some mock drafts show him going as high as No. 14, while others have him falling into the 20s. Regardless, he should be UF’s first drafted player since 2013 and first-round pick since 2012.

Here’s where Tre Mann lands in ESPN’s latest NBA mock draft

The latest mock draft from ESPN’s Jonathan Givony shows Tre Mann falling out of the lottery to the Hawks with the 19th pick.

Former Florida guard Tre Mann has seen his stock improve tremendously since he almost single-handedly led the Gators through the postseason. The team got knocked out in the second round, but Mann averaged 21.3 points per game in the SEC and NCAA Tournaments, improving upon his already impressive season average of 16.

Unsurprisingly, Mann made the decision to enter the NBA draft with an agent after the season, forfeiting his remaining college eligibility with the Gators in the process. He’s expected to end a drought of Florida players being drafted into the NBA that dates back to 2013. He’s also very likely to be the first UF first-round pick since Bradley Beal went third overall in 2012.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

But where exactly will Mann land? There’s not exactly a clear consensus. Some mock drafts show the former five-star recruit from The Villages landing near the tail end of the lottery, while others show him falling deeper into the first round. The only consistency is that most prognosticators don’t expect Mann to fall beyond the first 30 picks.

The draft order is far from set, as the NBA playoff field was only finalized with Golden State’s loss to Memphis on Friday night in the eight-seed play-in game. We now know which teams will be in the lottery, but that’s about it. But based on current projections, the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Jonathan Givony shows Mann falling out of the lottery to the Atlanta Hawks with the 19th pick.

Finding a combo guard who can play on or off the ball and complement star point guard Trae Young could very well be a priority for the Hawks. Mann is a promising pick-and-roll ball handler whose size and 40% 3-point shooting will allow him to play in a variety of lineup configurations.

This would be an interesting spot for Mann. As Givony mentions, the Hawks already have one of the best up-and-coming guards in Trae Young, who (as his name suggests) is only 22. Young primarily runs the point, and successfully, at that. He’s averaging over 25 points per game in 2020-21 and led the Hawks to a No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Adding Mann to the equation would give Atlanta quite a formidable backcourt, but it would be interesting to see how he and Young would coexist considering they’re both facilitators.

NEXT: Were any other Gators mentioned?

Tre Mann considered a lottery pick in CBS Sports’ latest mock draft

The former Gators point guard is projected as the final lottery pick in the first round of the NBA draft in this mock from CBS Sports.

Tre Mann‘s late-season surge did wonders in putting him on the draft radar of a number of NBA teams. Though the former five-star recruit was once thought of as a potential NBA talent, a disappointing freshman season in 2019-20 dampened much of that hype.

But as a sophomore in 2020-21, Mann looked like a totally different player. After Keyontae Johnson was lost for the season, Mann stepped into that role as Florida’s on-court leader. He was the team’s most consistent scorer and ran the offensive more effectively than any other Mike White-coached point guard since at least Chris Chiozza.

After his second season silenced many of the questions freshman campaign raised, Mann made the understandable decision to jump to the NBA, a decision that seems like it’s going to pay off. In the latest first-round mock draft from CBS Sports, Mann is projected as a lottery pick (albeit the last one at 14th overall). Here’s the rundown of him as a prospect.

Memphis adds an intriguing combo guard in Tre Mann, who offers potent scoring from the guard spot. Mann is a threat to score it from every level because of his ability to pull up and get his shot from anywhere, from deep in 3-point range to around the cup with good touch on his floaters. He’s also made strides as a passer.

After averaging just 5.3 points as a freshman, Mann bumped that up to 16 his sophomore season (leading the team). He was also a force on the defensive end, averaging 1.4 steals.

Florida hasn’t had a player drafted in the first round since 2012 (or at all since 2013). With Mann, both of those droughts are almost guaranteed to come to an end. The only question is how early will he be off the board in the first round.

2021 NBA Draft Big Board 3.0: Top 100 prospects pre-early entry deadline

As the NBA’s 2020-21 regular season nears its close, the league’s next wave of talent is preparing to take the great leap to become pros.

As the NBA’s 2020-21 regular season nears its close, the league’s next wave of talent is preparing to take the great leap to become pros.

Players have until the end of this month, May 30, to apply for entry into the 2021 NBA draft. They will then have until July 19 to determine whether or not they plan to stay in this class or (unless they hired an agent who does not have NCAA certification) return to school.

This is obviously an incredibly difficult decision and as the majority of early entry candidates have made their intentions public, those who are testing the waters are already weighing their options.

Fortunately, the NBA’s Undergraduate Advisory Committee (UAC) exists to help answer some of those questions.

The advisory committee, which began in 1997, offers feedback to prospects on their potential draft stock. As many prospects are facing pivotal decisions about their future, this kind of intel is incredibly important.

Players like Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert and Baylor’s Jared Butler both went through this process last season, likely were not satisfied with the results and opted to return. Now, after tremendous efforts last season, both are projected first-rounders.

These decisions have tremendous financial implications for these individuals as well. For example, even if Kispert or Butler went with the last pick in the first round in 2020, they would have likely earned a contract worth around $5 million over three years. This year, even if they went outside of the lottery at at No. 15 overall, that would be around $8.5 million.

With that in mind, for the latest version of For The Win’s 2021 NBA draft big board, I’ve provided my evaluation for the top prospects expected to be in the pre-draft process. Players excluded from this exercise were likely because the reporting suggests that they are going back to school.

Note that these decisions were fully based on where I would have each player ranked, not a projection, although various conversations with scouts as well as other talent evaluators around the league have factored into my evaluation.

CBS Sports mock draft shows Tre Mann as a lottery pick

Former Gators point guard Tre Mann boosted his stock tremendously after a much improved regular season and phenomenal play in the postseason

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more improved college basketball player during the 2020-21 season than Tre Mann. After a disappointing freshman season that didn’t see him live up to his hype as a five-star recruit at all, Mann came back with a vengeance his sophomore year.

After star forward Keyontae Johnson‘s season ended early following his collapse against Florida State, Mann stepped into the role of the team’s leader. He lived up to it this time, averaging 16 points and 5.6 assists.

He was great in the postseason, scoring 22 points and 30 points in Florida’s two SEC Tournament games and 14 and 19 points in the pair of NCAA Tournament games. Those performances saw his draft stock rise tremendously, which is why he made the decision to leave for the NBA with an agent.

That seems like it was a good call, as this latest mock draft from CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish has Mann projected to go 11th overall in the NBA draft to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Returning for a second season at Florida benefited Mann immensely as he averaged 10.7 more points per game, and shot 12.7% better from 3-point range, than he did as a freshman. He’s now considered a lock for the top 20 and somebody who can possibly flourish at three different positions in the NBA.

Mann is expected to end Florida’s NBA draft drought that dates back to Erik Murphy in 2013. The Gators haven’t had a lottery pick since Bradley Beal was taken third overall by the Washington Wizards in 2012.
