Urban Meyer questions Notre Dame’s recent reliance on transfer QBs

Is this a fair criticism?

[autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag] once was Notre Dame’s receivers coach and might be the best assistant coach it ever had who never took over the program.

Now free from the pressures of coaching altogether, he can just talk about football on The Triple Option. It has to be so liberating knowing he doesn’t have people scrutinizing him every second of every day anymore.

While chatting with co-host Rob Stone of Fox Sports, the Irish inevitably came up. Meyer mentioned the program’s recent trend of bringing in transfers as starting quarterback and how teams doing that hasn’t led to many national championships lately:

[autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] is following [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] and [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag] from earlier in this decade. While the Irish aren’t expected to win a national title this season anyway, it does make one wonder how confident they are in their ability to develop homegrown quarterbacks. We’ll see if they showcase that confidence over the rest of the 2020s.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has made his decision on transfer quarterback

The Irish have made their decision on if they will pursue a transfer quarterback this offseason

Notre Dame head football coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] used this past weekend’s bye week to analyze his team, specifically the quarterback position.

He had previously announced that during this off Saturday, he would make an assessment about the signal caller depth and if the Irish would once again head to the portal to address the issue.

In Freeman’s Monday press conference, he let everyone know that Notre Dame will indeed look to the portal for depth or potentially another quarterback starter.

Two of the last three years has seen the Irish have transfer starters, Jack Coan and Sam Hartman, with Tyler Buchner sandwiched between them.

We now know the course of action the Irish will take this offseason, but at the current moment, we have no idea who Freeman will target in the portal. Not many players have entered, so we will have a much clearer picture as soon as the regular season ends and also following bowl games.

Five remaining options for Notre Dame in their quest for a transfer quarterback

There are still plenty of solid options remaining in the portal for the Irish

The Irish haven’t had the best luck in finding a quarterback in the transfer portal. Yesterday, another big name was taken off the board when Texas’ [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] decided to head up North to the correct state, but not the right team, as he selected to continue his career at Purdue.

The list of intriguing options continues to dwindle, as [autotag]DJ Uiagalelei[/autotag] opted for [autotag]Oregon State[/autotag], [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] choose [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag], [autotag]Collin Schlee[/autotag] made a big jump from [autotag]Kent State[/autotag] to UCLA and [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] picked Florida.

The Irish were connected to Card and Leary, but obviously both choose elsewhere to strap their helmets up next. Here are a few options for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] that are still out in the portal that make sense for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag].

Potential transfer quarterbacks for Notre Dame and if they should pursue

Who do you like from this hypothetical list?

With the quarterback position in such a odd place for Notre Dame, it only makes sense to look around and see who else is out there. Recently, I complied a list of current QB’s in the transfer portal and if they would be a fit for the Irish.

Today, 247Sports Clint Brewster looked at hypothetical portal quarterbacks, so let’s do the same drill and see if they are fits for the Irish if they end up in the portal.

Where former Texas QB Casey Thompson ranks in the transfer portal

The former Texas QB barely cracks the Top 100 players in the portal right now.

It’s been a wild offseason for the transfer portal, primarily at the quarterback position. Continue reading “Where former Texas QB Casey Thompson ranks in the transfer portal”

Tua Tagovailoa’s brother Taulia has entered the transfer portal

Alabama sophomore QB Taulia Tagovailoa, former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa’s younger brother, has entered the transfer portal.

Alabama sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa, has entered the transfer portal.

Matt Zenitz of AL.com first reported and several other sources have confirmed that Taulia is indeed planning on transferring from the Crimson Tide.

Taulia was a 4-star recruit in the 2019 recruiting class and was ranked as the No. 5 pro-style QB and the No. 180 overall recruit. He appeared in 5 games last season, but when his older brother Tua went down with a nasty hip injury,  it was Mac Jones who came in to take over for Alabama. Jones returns in 2020 as a junior, and Bama added Bryce Young, a 5-star prospect from California. Young was the No. 1 QB and the No. 2 player overall in the 2020 recruiting class.

Georgia is scheduled to visit Tuscaloosa on Sept. 19 and will most likely see either Jones or Young at quarterback for Alabama.

Regardless of who is Bama’s signal caller in the fall, Georgia will be bringing one of the best defenses in the country to Saban’s turf  for a top-10 match-up.

Could more quarterback news be on the way for Georgia football?

Could more transfer quarterback news be on the way for Georgia football?

Friday, news broke that the Georgia football program would be replacing junior quarterback Jake Fromm with Jamie Newman from Wake Forest.

The graduate transfer entered his name in the NCAA’s transfer portal after the Demon Deacon’s bowl game against Michigan State and has already made his way to Athens.

However, it appears the Dawgs are not done in re-stocking the quarterback cabinet for next season. Sure, there’s four-star 2020 quarterback Carson Beck and the soon-to-be cleared former four-star in Dwan Mathis, but what about transfers?

Georgia already landed former Nevada freshman Austin Kirksey in the portal in December as a preferred walk-on and added Newman last Friday. Now, it appears that former three-star Chase Brice will leave Clemson to possibly join the Bulldogs.

Brice has long been the backup option for the Tigers behind the highly coveted Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence, but is best remembered for leading Clemson to a come-from-behind win over Syracuse in 2018, when the five-star Lawrence left the game due to injury.

In his collegiate career, Brice has a 60.3% completion rate, along with 1,023 yards passing and 9 touchdowns on 136 attempts. UGA Wire reported last Friday that even with the pickup of Newman, the Bulldogs were still a favorite to bring in the quarterback from up I-85 in South Carolina.

To make things more interesting, Brice recently announced he had changed his profile picture to a photo of him in a Quincy Carter jersey when he was younger.

Though nothing is official in Athens at the moment, UGA Wire can report there is a strong likelihood Brice becomes a Bulldog.

Unless something significantly changes, we expect Brice to suit up in red and black next season.
