Michigan State picked up a pair of defensive backs through the transfer portal last week, but the Spartans aren’t done in trying to add to their secondary.

Michigan State is reportedly already showing interest in former Texas Tech defensive back Dequanteous Watts, who entered his name into the transfer portal on Tuesday morning. According to Rivals, Watts has already received an offer from Liberty and received interest from Minnesota, UCF, Tennessee, Tulane, Old Dominion and Western Kentucky.

Watts, who is from Atlanta, didn’t appear in any games this past season for the Red Raiders after redshirting his freshman season in 2019.

Watts was ranked as a three-star prospect coming out of high school. Watts chose Texas Tech over offers from numerous power five programs, including Indiana, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

On Sunday morning, former Wisconsin safety Madison Cone announced his decision to transfer to the University of Buffalo for his final year of eligibility. The senior safety was with Wisconsin from 2017-2020 but decided to enter the transfer portal on Feb. 1.

Cone finished his Wisconsin career with 33 games played with 26 total tackles and 2 interceptions. The Kernersville, N.C. native excelled off the field as a Badger, earning a nomination to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy in 2020 as well as Academic All-Big Ten in 2018 and 2019.

Cone will be joining the Buffalo Bulls that finished in second place in the MAC last season after falling to the Ball State Cardinals in the MAC Championship game.

Former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert decommits from Florida

Less than a month after announcing his commitment to Florida, it seems the former five-star tight end will be on the move again.

Florida’s football team lost a potential major piece on Sunday, as former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert, who committed to the Gators on Jan. 31 in a tweet that has since been deleted, announced that he has decommitted from UF and will re-enter the transfer portal.

Gilbert was a five-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class out of Marietta High School in Georgia. He initially signed with LSU as the No. 5 recruit in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

As a true freshman for the Tigers, he appeared in eight games, notching 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He opted out of the remainder of the season on Dec. 9, and he entered the transfer portal on Jan. 5.

With Gilbert coming to Gainesville, Florida expected to gain a talented replacement for Kyle Pitts, who departed for the NFL Draft. Now, the Gators will have to roll with tight ends that were already on the roster, namely Kemore Gamble and Keon Zipperer.

For the first time since former LSU and Louisiana Tech offensive tackle Willie Allen pledged to the Wolverines last fall, Michigan football has added a player from the NCAA transfer portal.

Hailing from the 2018 recruiting class, Alan Bowman was a three-star quarterback out of Grapevine (TX). A pro-style QB, Bowman played for three seasons at Texas Tech, where he completed 67% of his passes for 5,260 yards and 33 touchdowns to 17 interceptions on 713 attempts. And on Sunday, he’s joining a quarterback battle in progress between Cade McNamara and former five-star J.J. McCarthy, as he announced on Twitter that he is committing to the Wolverines.

While he’s played 19 games in three seasons, he redshirted his sophomore year, and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Michigan State Football continues to overhaul their roster through the transfer portal. On Saturday, former 3-star cornerback Marqui Lowery Jr., who redshirted last season with Louisville, announced that he will be transferring to MSU.

Lowery Jr. was the No. 50 ranked player in North Carolina coming out of high school and, as stated, he redshirted his first season with Louisville.

Lower Jr. transitioned to the defensive back role late in high school and we haven’t been able to see him play live college ball yet, but Tucker must have seen something he liked in the young corner.

Oklahoma’s Brendan Radley-Hiles the No. 6 best player in the transfer portal

According to 247Sports, Oklahoma Sooners cornerback Brendan Radley-Hiles is among the best available in the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners football team has had its fair share of success when it comes to the transfer portal. The team added a starting left tackle in Wanya Morris, depth at running back in Eric Gray, and a developing safety in Key Lawrence. When it comes to the portal it isn’t always sunshine and daffodils. Riley has one case on his hands in nickel cornerback Brendan Radley-Hiles.

When discussing the talented player, people fall on opposite ends of the spectrum. Some appreciate the fire that he plays with and some don’t think he should be playing in Norman. You can ask Kirk Herbstreit about that one. One person who shares the opinion of the former is the head coach in Lincoln Riley.

“I certainly hope his career here is not over; we’ll see how it plays out,” Riley stated during his media availability following the second signing day.

Nearly a five-star recruit in the 2018 class as a high-four-star and the 247Sports Composite’s No. 38 overall prospect, No. 5 cornerback and No. 7 player in Florida out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Brendan Radley-Hiles produced at Oklahoma. In 37 games from 2018-20, Radley-Hiles totaled 115 tackles (nine for loss), one sack, three interceptions (one touchdown), 14 pass breakups and one forced fumble (one recovery). The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder is a native of Inglewood, California. – Garrett Stepien of 247Sports

The door isn’t closed on Bookie returning to Norman for the 2021 season as Riley has stated that he wants him back. It remains to be seen if the No. 6 best player available in the portal wants to return to the Sooners. It is a fluid situation as most often is the case when it comes to the transfer portal.

MSU Football lands former Michigan LB Ben VanSumeren from transfer portal

Former Michigan LB Ben VanSumeren entered the transfer portal after three seasons in Ann Arbor. He will now be heading to Michigan State.

[jwplayer mKgJ519R]

Michigan State has added another new Spartan from the transfer portal, earning the commitment from Ben VanSumeren. VanSumeren will be transferring from in-state rival Michigan.

A member of Michigan’s 2018 recruiting class, from Essexville, Michigan and Garber High School and rated as a high 3-star.

VanSumeren has seen time as a starting linebacker at the SAM position in Ann Arbor, as well as a starting fullback. He will be coming to Michigan State as a linebacker who will excel at supporting in the run game.

VanSumeren’s younger brother, Alex, is also a priority recruit for Mel Tucker’s staff. Alex is a 4-star defensive tackle and is somewhat expected to follow his brother Ben. Let’s see if Mel Tucker can close out that recruitment in the Spartans favor.

Ben VanSumeren will be a great addition to help retool MSU’s defense and is an experienced linebacker, which is a position the Spartans desperately need some depth.

Michigan State looking to add New Mexico State DB Jason Simmons Jr. via transfer portal

Jason Simmons Jr. announced he’s received a scholarship offer from the Spartans via Twitter on Thursday evening.

[jwplayer m7NMcFMS]

As Mel Tucker said earlier this month, Michigan State football is remaining active in the transfer portal — this time offering defensive back Jason Simmons Jr. of New Mexico State.

Simmons announced the scholarship offer from the Spartans via Twitter on Thursday evening.

Simmons — who is listed at 6-foot and 193 pounds — started as a true freshman for New Mexico State where he recorded 62 total tackles, one forced fumble and three passes defended in 2019. New Mexico State didn’t play this past fall due to COVID-19.

Coming out of high school, Simmons was a three-star recruit and the No. 186 safety prospect in the class of 2019. He is from Lancaster, Texas.

Simmons entered his name into the transfer portal on Monday, and has already received scholarship offers from Western Kentucky and North Texas as well. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Below are highlights of Simmons from his freshman season at New Mexico State:

Michigan QB Joe Milton enters NCAA transfer portal

After initially getting the start in 2020, Michigan football quarterback Joe Milton will try his hand elsewhere.

[jwplayer GIOfLbEu-XNcErKyb]
How do you limit an impending quarterback competition? You remove one from the equation.

That’s what happened last year, when Dylan McCaffrey departed the team with intentions to transfer, paving the way for Joe Milton to get the nod for the season opener. Looks like the same thing is happening again, but this time, Milton is out.

Milton had a spectacular debut against Minnesota, but started to struggle more and more as each game progressed. By the Rutgers game, he was pulled for Cade McNamara, who went on to start the following week against Penn State.

On Thursday, Milton announced his intentions to transfer.

With Milton out of the picture, the impending quarterback battle this spring appears to be between McNamara and early-enrollee and former five-star J.J. McCarthy.
