Transfer portal offensive lineman names Auburn football in top five

Auburn’s in the running for a solid offensive lineman.

Hunter Nourzad is looking at Auburn football as a potential landing spot to spend the rest of his college career.

The former Cornell offensive lineman named Auburn as one of his five schools that he will potentially be transferring to as a grad transfer.

His five schools are the Auburn Tigers, Virginia Tech Hokies, Iowa Hawkeyes, Illinois, and Penn State.

Auburn needs help on the offensive front and a grad transfer with plenty of college experience could help them instantly in 2022.

Bryan Harsin and his coaching staff appear to have reached out to several transfer linemen as they have entered the transfer portal.

Here’s four transferring players who should interest the Gators

The transfer portal has been a hot topic in college football as teams look to fatten their rosters.

To anyone who’s been paying attention over the past year or two, it’s obvious that the transfer portal is an essential part of team building in college football. Like it or not, the best teams will capitalize on the wellspring of talent that is the portal and players will use it to seek the best situation for themselves. For the Gators to reach their competitive potential under head coach Billy Napier, they’re going to have to embrace this reality.

Fortunately for Florida, a busy transfer portal means the team can expedite their way to being serious contenders without needing to wait for their young talent to develop into serious weapons. Combine savvy recruiting skills and a little luck, and they can quickly infuse the roster with talent.

We’ve already written extensively about a handful of players in the portal on two other occasions, here and here. They’re some of our most in-demand articles, so we’re back with a third installment. Here are another four players who should be of some interest to the Gators in the transfer portal.

What Pro Football Focus had to say about Dillon Gabriel when he was still committed to UCLA

What did Pro Football Focus have to say about Dillon Gabriel in their transfer quarterback ranking when he was committed to UCLA?

Just yesterday, here at the Sooners Wire we took a look at Pro Football Focus’ list of transfer quarterback rankings and how they’ve graded them thus far into the 2022 transfer portal cycle. They had glowing things to say about South Carolina’s addition of Spencer Rattler, who was the highest-rated quarterback in the portal at the time.

Now just a day and a half later, Caleb Williams has entered the transfer portal and the Oklahoma Sooners received a commitment from former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel, who suffered an injury to the clavicle in his throwing shoulder and missed most of the season, looked like he was heading to UCLA in the transfer portal, but with Williams in the portal and potentially on the move, the Sooners needed an insurance policy.

Just like we did with Rattler yesterday, let’s take a look at what Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus had to say about Dillon Gabriel. Treash considered Gabriel a significant upgrade compared to UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. It’s likely the PFF analyst wouldn’t feel the same about going from Williams to Gabriel, but he doesn’t have to be an upgrade to be a successful quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Gabriel thrived as an underclassman with Josh Heupel as the head coach prior to missing most of 2021 due to injury. Heupel is widely known for his quarterback-friendly offense that provides simplistic reads for the passer. While the concepts are painless for the quarterback, the offense still needs the signal-caller to have the arm to consistently take one-on-one vertical shots down the sideline when the defense is in single-high. Gabriel has fantastic touch downfield, and that trait led to major passing success. He earned 80.3 and 90.4 passing grades as a true freshman and sophomore in 2019 and 2020. – Anthony Treash, Pro Football Focus

Gabriel has 26 starts under his belt and is very familiar with new Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby from their time together at UCF. He averaged more than 300 yards passing in his 26 starts and helped UCF to an 18-8 record over two-plus seasons.

If Williams does indeed find a new home, Gabriel would be the odds on favorite to start at quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2022. He’d get some competition from 2022 four-star quarterback Nick Evers out of Flower Mound, but Gabriel’s familiarity with Lebby and the offense will give him a leg up in the competition.

Oklahoma Sooners land former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel through the Transfer Portal

The Oklahoma Sooners get some quarterback relief as former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel flips his commitment from UCLA to the Oklahoma Sooners.

The quarterback carousel of college football touched the Oklahoma Sooners on Monday as Caleb Williams announced he’d be heading to the transfer portal. In December, Spencer Rattler entered the portal and decided to head east to join former assistant coach Shane Beamer at the University of South Carolina.

Though there’s no telling what will happen with Caleb Williams, and there’s no guarantee he’s out the door, the Sooners have a potential replacement if Williams does indeed find a new home elsewhere.

Announcing tonight via his social media, former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel has announced that he’s heading to the Oklahoma Sooners. Gabriel was previously committed to UCLA to play for Chip Kelly. With the Sooners quarterback position in upheaval, Gabriel believes the right move is to hook back up with his former offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby in Norman.

Gabriel comes to the Sooners with 26 career starts for the Golden Knights. In 2021, he was limited to just three starts after fracturing his left clavicle against Louisville in September.

In those 26 starts, Gabriel averaged 309 passing yards per game, 2.69 passing touchdowns, and threw just 14 interceptions in that time. He also rushed for eight touchdowns in those 26 starts. The Golden Knights went 18-8 with Dillon Gabriel under center.

With Dillon Gabriel in the fold, Oklahoma Sooners now have a bonafide starter for 2022 in the event that their starter from 2021 doesn’t return.

Gators should make this transferring lineman a recruiting priority

This former Ragin’ Cajun should be on the Gators’ transfer portal wish list.

Let’s be honest, the Gators are in desperate need of help along the offensive line. The unit was hardly a shining example of discipline despite its carefully manicured veteran status and the team’s depth is pitiful thanks to former coach John Hevesy’s struggles in recruiting.

New head coach Billy Napier’s staff has made a few additions, flipping tackle recruit Christian Williams to a Gators commitment and snagging transferring center Kam Waites from the portal. What do the two have in common? Both were originally slated to play for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns next year, and followed Napier and offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to The Swamp.

That well isn’t dry, though. Right guard O’Cyrus Torrence has entered the transfer portal after starting for the Ragin’ Cajuns for the past three seasons. Not only does the team have a prime angle for making him a Gator, they should make doing so a priority.

Starting at right guard last season was sixth-year lineman Stewart Reese, who started his career at Mississippi State transferred to Florida with Dan Mullen and Hevesy. Though Reese was a useful player, his eligibility is completely expended, including the extra COVID year for players who were eligible in 2020. Now that he’s out of the picture, there’s a gaping hole at right guard and no obvious successor. Clearly, Torrence would fill a need for the team.

Furthermore, he’s more than just an old pal for Napier and Stapleton. He has real SEC potential. Torrence won All-Conference honors two years in a row as a member of Louisiana’s offensive line and has the physical tools to back it up.

I took the opportunity to watch some of Torrence’s 2021 tape, largely from the App State game, and I came away impressed with his abilities. He’s a mobile guard who routinely breaks into the second level and takes linebackers out of the equation. He also seems competent redirecting bull rushes, especially to his left and into a double team with the center.

That’s not to say he’s without flaw. The weak spot in Torrence’s game is his upper body strength. When a defensive lineman gets the better of him by leveraging him backward, he struggles to recover and almost always loses the rep. Lorenz Lienweber, a Senior Scout at Sports Illustrated’s NFL Draft Bible, expressed the same opinion on Twitter. This isn’t an issue that will go away in the SEC. Because there aren’t too many players who tower over his 6-foot-5-inch frame, though, it’s more of a nagging annoyance than a debilitating problem.

Torrence is familiar with the scheme the Gators will be running and the coaches who will be running it, he has plenty of experience as a starter, and he has the skills to hang in there with almost anyone. That fits what Florida needs to a tee.

With only two years of eligibility remaining, Torrence isn’t a long-term solution to any of the Gators’ problems. Bringing him onto the team is a low-risk proposition, though, which is exactly what the Gators need in the trenches. Sports247 has already logged a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Florida, but if it hasn’t already happened, making him a priority needs to be a no-brainer for Napier and Stapleton.

Two Michigan football defensive players enter NCAA transfer portal

Best of luck to them. #GoBlue

While players are bound to stay on when things are going good, when it doesn’t appear there’s a role for them, they’re also bound to leave.

Such is the case for two soon-to-be former Wolverines, who stayed on during Michigan football’s 2021 College Football Playoff run, but now that that’s over, are looking, presumably, for a place where they can find more playing time.

On Monday, two players entered the NCAA transfer portal, both on the defensive side of the ball. The first is linebacker Anthony Solomon, who was a longtime target that suddenly appeared to be out of the fray, before the maize and blue started searching for more team speed on the defensive side of the ball following in the 2018 loss to Ohio State. The Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star was in the VIPER rotation. However, despite that position being eradicated with Mike Macdonald taking over defensive coordinator duties from Don Brown, Solomon stayed on. He mostly played special teams snaps throughout the years.

The other is another late addition, this time to the 2020 recruiting class, in Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne four-star cornerback Darion Green-Warren. Green-Warren committed after the early signing period, on Jan. 4, 2020, and was expected to shore up the secondary. However, in his two years with the program, he hasn’t been able to see the field in any form.

With the latter departure, there are plenty of defensive backs who could take his place, including any of the six already signed to the 2022 recruiting class.

All-American WR Jacob Cowing joins 4-star Tetairoa McMillan in choosing Arizona over Oregon

Jacob Cowing is the latest WR to choose Arizona over Oregon, just weeks after 4-star Tetairoa McMillan flipped from Ducks to Wildcats.

[jwplayer gSSTLM0W]

The Oregon Ducks hare on an unlucky streak when it comes to convincing highly-rated wide receivers to come to Eugene rather than join the Arizona Wildcats.

Just a few weeks after having 4-star WR Tetairoa McMillan flip his commitment from the Ducks to the Wildcats, former UTEP All-American WR Jacob Cowing chose to transfer to Arizona after listing the Ducks in his top-5 destinations.

With 69 catches for 1,354 yards and 8 total touchdowns, Cowing was named to the Conference USA All-American First Team this past year, building on his second-team nomination in 2020. In his career with UTEP, Cowing has 14 touchdowns in three seasons, with over 2,500 receiving yards.

After entering the transfer portal, Cowing made it known that the top five schools he was looking to join were Oregon, Arizona, Florida, LSU, and South Carolina.

Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback Caleb Williams enters the transfer portal

Looking to explore his options after the coaching change, Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams has entered the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been through a lot since the start of the 2021 college football season. There was a quarterback change, a Bedlam loss, missing out on the Big 12 championship for the first time since 2014, and a coaching change that shocked the sports world.

After the coaching change that saw Lincoln Riley leave the Oklahoma Sooners for USC and Brent Venables arrive as the next head coach, Caleb Williams and his teammates went to work to prepare for the Oregon Ducks and the Valero Alamo Bowl. Williams went 21 of 27 for 242 yards and three touchdowns as the Sooners won 47-32.

Now with the season in the rearview, Williams will evaluate his options by entering the transfer portal.

Caleb Williams shared via his personal Twitter account that he’ll be entering the transfer portal. In his statement, he said, “As you all know the sudden changes this season sent shockwaves through Sooner nation and were really hard for the whole team. Proud of what we did this whole season but especially the last four weeks.”

In his announcement that he’d be entering the transfer portal, Williams shared more about why he’s exploring other options. “I think we all come to college to find our own path and prepare for the future. I came to Oklahoma with a game plan, but with all of the recent changes, I need to figure out what is the right path for me moving forward. According to NCAA rules, as a student-athlete, the only way I can speak with other schools and see who may offer the best preparation and development for my future career is by entering the portal. Staying at OU will definitely be an option as I begin this process.”

In response to Williams decision to enter the transfer portal, Oklahoma Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione released a statement saying, “Caleb Williams enjoyed an exciting and impactful first season at the University of Oklahoma and we will continue to be engaged with him and his family on a comprehensive plan for his development as a student and a quarterback, including a path to graduation and strategic leveraging of NIL opportunities. While we believe OU provides Caleb the best opportunity to develop as a player and realize his goals for college and beyond, we respect his right to explore his options following key staffing changes here.”

It’s an unfortunate development for the Oklahoma Sooners who’ve now had two highly regarded quarterbacks enter the transfer portal in the last month. First, Spencer Rattler, who found a new home at South Carolina, and now Caleb Williams may do the same.

The Sooners have seen players enter the portal only to return. Theo Wease and Brey Walker have done just that in recent weeks. And Williams has left open the possibility of a return to the Oklahoma Sooners.
