When will Penn State grab a QB out of the transfer portal?

Penn State is still on the search for the right quarterback out of the transfer portal.

Penn State has been active in the transfer portal this offseason. The activity reportedly has continued with the pending addition of former Florida State cornerback, but there is still one position Penn State is expected to add to through the transfer portal before the start of the 2021 season. The quarterback position was thought to be high on the list of offseason priorities for Penn State, yet the Nittnay Lions have not found the right addition just yet.

Head coach James Franklin said during spring football practices that Penn State would not be adding a quarterback just to add a quarterback. Instead, Franklin stressed the importance of finding the right fit for the Penn State offense, and preferably someone with some real game experience to fall back on should the Nittany Lions need it.

It’s been a while since we last took a hard look at the list of available quarterbacks in the transfer portal this offseason. Some of the names we previously explored have since gone on to make their transfer destinations known (like Joe Milton transferring from Michigan to Tennessee). But some options, including Austin Kendall from West Virginia and Devon Modster from Cal are among those still lingering.

One of the names that popped up after our initial review was former LSU quarterback TJ Finley. While Penn State was considered to be in the final running, he chose to stay in the SEC and transfer to Auburn instead. So it was back to the drawing board for Penn State.

As the month of June comes to a close and with Penn State focusing plenty of energy on the recruiting efforts for the Class of 2022, just where does finding a new quarterback sit on the offseason to-do list right now?

First, the idea that Penn State doesn’t view adding a quarterback as a priority this summer should probably be removed from the discussion. Franklin and his staff are fully aware that there is a serious lack of experience behind their third-year starter, Sean Clifford. Should Clifford need to be replaced for any reason, there would still be a much better comfort level riding the ship with someone who has some experience playing college football compared to the current backup options in Taquan Roberson and Christian Veilleux. That is not to say either of those two are or will be bad quarterbacks, but there is something to be said about experience and neither of them have it at this time.

Second, there really may not be much of a rush right now. The transfer portal is still full of quarterback options and the season does not start for another two months. Even an addition in late July gives a transfer the entire month of August to be with the team and go through a full fall camp before the start of the season. And if they already have some experience, the transition could be smoother.

Or third, maybe there are still more options on the way? The transfer portal is always having names added to it and it is still possible a quarterback that fits what Penn State is aiming for could still come along. So if Franklin and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich aren’t blown away by any current options in the transfer portal, perhaps another new addition could open their eyes at some point.

For now, the waiting game continues.

Ally Shipman enters transfer portal

Ally Shipman enters transfer portal.

Tennessee junior catcher Ally Shipman announced she has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

“Lady Vol nation, first off, I’d like to thank both Ralph and Karen (Weekly) for the opportunity to be a Lady Vol,” Shipman said on Twitter. “This university, this program, and this fan base will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you to my teammates and support staff for the relationships we have developed over the past three years.

“After lots of thought and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal. This has not been an easy decision for me, but I believe it is the right one. Love you all and always GBO.”

Shipman is from Valencia High School in Valencia, California.

Gators infielder Cory Acton announces transfer to Georgia

Acton started 19 games at second base in 2021. Now, he’s joining one of Florida’s most heated rivals.

Florida infielder Cory Acton is leaving the UF baseball team to join division rival Georgia, he announced on his Instagram page. Acton, a “COVID” sophomore, will have two remaining years of eligibility with the Bulldogs.

Acton was a major part of the UF team in 2021, especially down the stretch, appearing in 31 games and starting 19 of them. He batted .250 and notched 10 RBI on the year.

Acton was never quite able to replicate his strong play as a true freshman in 2019 when he hit six home runs with 30 RBI starting all but two of the Gators’ 60 games. He started 15 of 17 games in 2020 before the season was canceled, but his average fell to sub-.200 and he finished with just one homer and four RBI.

Acton returned closer to form in 2021, but now he’ll hope for a career resurgence in Athens. For Florida, it marks the eighth player to leave through the transfer portal since UF was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Oregon linebacker Isaac Slade-Matuatia enters transfer portal ahead of season

Veteran linebacker Isaac Slade-Matuatia has announced on his Instagram page that he plans to enter the transfer portal and leave Oregon.

Well, that comes as a bit of a surprise.

One of the main players on Oregon’s defense has announced via his Instagram page that he plans to enter the transfer portal and look for a new team with which to finish his college career.

Isaac Slade-Matuatia played at Oregon for three seasons, becoming one of the better linebackers on the depth chart and starting a majority of the games over his final two seasons. Slade-Matuatia registered 131 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his time with the Ducks.

There was no guarantee that the former Duck was going to be a starter in 2021, with the rise of both Justin Flowe and Noah Sewell on the defense. Oregon is also working with a new defensive coordinator in Tim Deruyter.

Penn State padding depth with transfer from Florida State

A former Florida State cornerback is reportedly heading to Happy Valley to add to the depth of the defensive secondary.

After a rocky experience at Florida State, cornerback AJ Lytton appears set to take the opportunity for a fresh start at Penn State. According to a report from 247 Sports on Tuesday evening, Lytton will enroll in classes at Penn State next week and officially join the program at that time.

Lytton was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2018 for the Seminoles. He was originally recruited to Tallahassee by former Florid State head coach Willie Taggart. He chose Florida State over offers from many top programs, including Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Michigan, and even Penn State. Lytton, a native of Maryland, never made a visit to Penn State while being recruited out of high school, however.

Lytton appeared in 12 games for Florida State during the 2019 season and 10 games in 2018 as a true freshman. Between the two seasons as mostly a reserve (one start in 2019), Lytton recorded 28 tackles and 2.0 tackles for a loss with one interception and one forced fumble.

Lytton left the Florida State program in February 2020 and continued at a community college while taking the time to evaluate his options. A pandemic in 2020 may have led to Lytton letting the process play out a little longer than usual. At the time Lytton left the Florida State program, Taggart had been removed as head coach and Mike Norvell of Memphis had been hired. The transition for Norvell was a bit rocky for some players, perhaps including Lytton.

But sometimes all you need is a fresh start and a new opportunity. If Penn State can take advantage of a player ready to make up for some lost time, then they may have picked up quite the transfer prize. But the secondary is far from Penn State’s biggest issue on the roster in 2021. James Franklin has spoken at length about the quality depth Penn State appears to have in the defensive secondary.

The addition of Lytton appears to cement the depth as a strong suit for the upcoming season. But Lytton has two years of eligibility remaining, so his transfer addition would help solidify the position more in 2022 as well, with Kalen King and Joey Porter Jr. among the possible options to start at cornerback in 2022.

Texas WR Jake Smith enters the NCAA transfer portal

Wide receiver Jake Smith has entered the transfer portal after two seasons in Austin. Max Olson of The Athletic was the first to report.

While Steve Sarkisian has excelled in the transfer portal, the other side can be just as detrimental.

On Tuesday, wide receiver Jake Smith entered the transfer portal after two seasons in Austin. Max Olson of The Athletic was the first to report the news. A former four-star recruit, Smith played in 20 games, having 568 yards and nine touchdowns.

A broken foot kept the wide receiver out of the entirety of spring practice. While Smith was not expected to be a full-time starter, he was going to be a major contributor in Sarkisian’s offense.

Smith was a member of the 2019 recruiting class under Tom Herman. He was the No. 49 overall prospect after winning the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Being a Scottsdale, Arizona native, a west coast option is the most likely destination for Smith.

Tom Herman’s usage of Smith will leave fans wondering what if. In Mike Yurcich’s offense, Smith played in the slot with Jordan Whittington. Rarely would the two receivers have the opportunity to be on the field at the same time. Smith never had the opportunity to prove he could be an every-down receiver.

With the roster in front of Sarkisian, the addition of Xavier Worthy seems that much more important. Whittington, Troy Omeire, and Joshua Moore will continue to be the top three receivers but the depth gets thinner with Smith’s departure.

The need for four wide receivers in the 2022 recruiting class just became more important.

Hereā€™s a first look at incoming Florida basketball transfers at summer workouts

Head coach Mike White brought in four experienced transfers to boost the Gators’ changes in the SEC during the 2021 season.

The Florida Gators, like many teams in college basketball, are experiencing a staggering amount of roster turnover this offseason. The increased activity around the league is due in large part to the NCAA’s ruling to make all transfers eligible to play immediately upon arriving with their new team in 2021. This is a big opportunity for players who are dissatisfied with the role they hold on their current team or simply think they can play for a better one.

Under the leadership of head coach Mike White, the Gators have been unafraid to plunder the transfer portal to buttress the team. Unsurprisingly, then, they were big players in the portal this offseason. They brought on a quartet of high-performing players looking for greener pastures.

Friday, we got our first look at the new guys in Gators gear via the team Twitter account. The tweet highlights guard Brandon McKissic, guard Myreon Jones, forward CJ Felder, and guard/forward Phlandrous Fleming Jr., respectively.

All four seem to be in line to receive some real playing time in the upcoming season. McKissic and Fleming are both fifth-year seniors who came to Florida with one year of eligibility remaining but aren’t considered NBA prospects. Odds are that White convinced them playing time would be available for them because there probably isn’t a whole lot of basketball in their post-college future.

Jones is probably going to be the most impactful on the court next season. He was a high producer in the Big Ten, and while Fleming and McKissic were impressive in their respective leagues as well, Jones did it against tougher competition and with better efficiency.

The Gators are entering next season as a much more experienced group than when they began the last. In large part, that’s thanks to the upperclassmen they’re bringing to Gainesville via the transfer portal.

Florida football adds one last official transfer portal visitor for this weekend

Elijah Blades, a former 2017 UF commit, entered the NCAA transfer portal after one season at Texas A&M. He will be a graduate transfer.

Former Texas A&M defensive back Elijah Blades entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month after he opted out of the 2020 season. He will be a last-minute addition to the five other official visitors making the trek to Florida this weekend.

Blades is a familiar name to Florida fans who have followed recruiting closely for the last several years. He originally committed to the Gators in 2017 under head coach Jim McElwain. The former 4-star corner then backed off his pledge and signed with Nebraska on National Signing Day. However, he was forced to go to junior college for two years. Blades signed and enrolled with the Aggies after two years at Arizona Western Junior College. In 2019, he started six games for them and registered 19 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

The Gators seem like the team to beat for Blades currently because of the program’s connection to him. He enjoyed Gainesville and UF’s campus as a high school prospect. Coach Dan Mullen and his coaching staff also recruited him out of junior college. He will also be a graduate transfer.

If Florida lands Blades, it’ll be the second defensive back it has snagged from the transfer portal this offseason who joins former Missouri cornerback Jadarrius Perkins.

This move doesn’t make that much sense for Florida because the coaching staff would add another body in a defensive back room with lots of bodies and young talent. The Gators just signed 5-star cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. this last cycle. In 2020, they grabbed 4-star corners Ethan Pouncey and Avery Helm. UF also has former 4-star Jaydon Hill from the 2019 cycle.

It’s likely one of these players besides Marshall will feel the need to transfer if they sign Blades because of the lack of playing time available. It’s also not likely that the former Texas A&M defensive back will slot into a starting position because Marshall, who signed in spring practice, will likely grab the spot opposite of star corner Kaiir Elam.

Former Florida baseball player heading to North Florida

Former Florida outfielder Brock Edge, who entered the transfer portal last week, announced his commitment to North Florida on Twitter.

Florida outfielder Brock Edge, who entered the transfer portal last week, has found a new home. The fifth-year player will be staying relatively close, as he will be transferring to North Florida to play his final collegiate season of eligibility. He announced his decision on Twitter.

Edge was a relatively unknown recruit out of high school. Perfect Game didn’t have him ranked overall nationally, and he was just the No. 573 outfielder in the nation. He started his career at the junior college level, playing for Santa Fe College in Gainesville in 2018 and 2019.

The son of former Florida punter Shayne Edge, the younger Edge signed with the Gators, appearing in 11 of 17 games during his junior season in 2020 before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In six at-bats, he had two hits and an RBI. He also managed to reach base on a walk.

As a “COVID” junior in 2021, Edge saw an even smaller role. He appeared in 10 games but saw just four at-bats. He didn’t earn any hits and struck out in two of those at-bats, but he did score one run on the season.

Now, he’ll hope to see more action with the Ospreys in his final season.
