The 20 best moments of the 2020-21 NBA season so far

Here are the 20 best moments of the NBA season so far from the best plays to the best memes.

This NBA season has been quite a journey already and we’re just hitting the halfway mark.

We’ve had our fair share of incredible moments from game-winners to dunks to every amazing individual performance we’ve seen. We’ve also had a ton of memes, weird interviews and wild press conferences, too.

And it’s all happened in such a small window because of the shortened season.

Yes, we know. It can be extremely hard to keep up with it all. But don’t worry about it! That’s exactly why we’re here. Here’s a list of the 20 best moments from the NBA season so far this year, from dunks to memes and everything in between.

The 4 most surprising things about the NBA’s All-Star voting so far

From everything to Alex Caruso appearing on the list to Jerami Grant turning into a star.

The second round of NBA All-Star ballots are in and the returns are pretty wacky so far.

Of course, the leaders look right so far. You’ve got LeBron James with 4.3 million votes and Kevin Durant with 4.2 million votes as your leaders in the East and West respectively.

They’ve also got big names following them. Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, and that rounds out the top six vote getters.

None of that is particularly surprising about this. What is surprising, though, are some of the names you see as you start to move toward the bottom of the list.

Just take a look.

Yeah, things are getting pretty weird here. Let’s explore this for a second.

Former Warrior JaVale McGee records four blocks in Lakers vs. Trail Blazers Game 4

In game four of the Lakers series against the Blazers, former Warrior JaVale McGee tallied eight points and eight boards in 14 minutes.

For the first time since 2012, the Golden State Warriors are on the outside of the Western Conference’s playoff dance. With the league’s worst record at 15-50, the Warriors became one of the first squads eliminated from playoff contention.

With no hoops on the calendar in the Bay Area, Warriors Wire is checking in with former members of Golden State inside the Orlando Bubble.

On Monday, a former member of Golden State’s championship run laced up for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Portland Trail Blazers. In game four of the first-round series, JaVale McGee tallied eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field with eight boards.

Throughout the series against the Blazers, McGee has been active on the glass, grabbing at least eight rebounds in three of the four games.

In the Lakers’ special “Mamba” black uniforms, McGee contributed on the defensive end with four blocks in 14 minutes. McGee’s four swats against Portland were the most blocks he’s recorded since entering the Orlando Bubble.

Leading the Lakers to a 135-115 blowout victory, LeBron James registered 30 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor with 10 assists and six rebounds. NBA Bubble Most Valuable Playe Damian Lillard left the game with a knee injury in the third quarter.

With Lillard listed as out for game five, James, McGee, Anthony Davis and the Lakers will have the chance to close out the series against the Blazers on Wednesday at 6 P.M. PST.

Paul Pierce’s latest LeBron James take is proof he’s just being a hater

He’s just hating.

Paul Pierce is always good for a scorching hot take when it comes to LeBron James.

And after the Lakers lost to the Trail Blazers on Tuesday night, you just knew he’d be coming with another one on Wednesday.

And, right on cue, that’s exactly what he did. In an appearance on First Take on Wednesday, Paul Pierce said that if James and the Lakers lose to the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. he can no longer be considered in the conversation about the greatest players of all-time.

He already doesn’t consider James a top 5 player ever. A first round loss would cement that, he said.

I’ve already said he’s not a top 5 player of all-time. If the Lakers don’t win a championship, let alone lose in the first round, I don’t want to hear none of this GOAT talk no more.”

So that’s that on that for Paul Pierce. But it’s not really something we should take seriously from him.

Paul Pierce doesn’t like LeBron James. That’s a known fact. His former teammate Kendrick Perkins has admitted it. This is all personal for him.

How do we know? All we have to do is look at his GOAT list. He considers Michael Jordan to be the greatest basketball player of all-time, which is a good and fine take.

But Michael Jordan has lost in the first round of the playoffs — three times in fact. Yet, none of that has disqualified him from being the greatest player ever? Make it make sense.

It doesn’t. It turns out that this is just Paul Pierce, once again, hating on James. Nothing to see here.

Steph Curry reacts to Kenny Smith saying he can’t shoot as deep as Damian Lillard

Steph Curry chimed in on Twitter after NBA on TNT analyst Kenny Smith questioned if the Warriors point guard can shoot it as deep as Damian Lillard.

While Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors are at home, Damian Lillard’s Portland Trail Blazers matched up with the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the opening round of the Western Conference Playoffs.

On the Blazers’ way to an upset victory in game one, Lillard continued his scorching stretch in the Orlando Bubble with 34 points on 9-of-21 shooting from the field. The Oakland native splashed six 3-pointers with a few coming from way beyond the arc. Against the LeBron James and the Lakers, Lillard added five rebounds, five assists and a block.

In the postgame show, NBA on TNT analyst Kenny Smith brought up Golden State’s two-time Most Valuable Player. While highlights rolled of Lillard’s long-distance shooting, Smith questioned if Curry has as deep of range as Portland’s point guard.

I don’t think you can shoot as deep as him, Steph. I’ve got to see it when you get back.

After Smith’s comments, Curry weighed in on social media. The six-time All-Star said Smith was “trippin.”

Following Curry’s reaction, “The Jet” chimed in with a tweet of his own.

The NBA bubble’s play-in games work. The league needs to make them permanent

Keep the party going.

Sports are rooted in tradition. They have always been.

These games have been around for decades — some for centuries. And, throughout their time in existence, there have been certain norms and mores that come with them.

But, sometimes, those traditions don’t bring the best out in the sports that we love. Sometimes it’s good to just shake things up. It’s good to make something a little different.

That’s what the NBA has done with their new play-in scenario for the 8th seed in each conference — they’ve made things a little more interesting.

In case you forgot, here’s a quick explainer on how it works. The 9th seed team must be within 4 games of the 8th seed to trigger a play-in scenario for the spot.

Then, that 9th seed must beat the 8th seed twice in a two game series to move into the 8th slot and move on in the playoffs. If they lose once, they’re done.

Over this two week stretch in the NBA’s return, we’ve seen the Trail Blazers, Suns and Spurs all play exceptional basketball to try and move into that spot. It’s been frantic, but also an absolute joy to watch. And we’re going to get some incredible matchups to go with it.

And it’s also exactly why the NBA needs to keep this going for years to come. Let me explain.

It gives us an actual finish to the race for the 8th seed

We’ve seen so many anticlimactic finishes in the race for the 8th seed over the years.

Normally it just ends with one team either losing and mathematically being eliminated or some silly tiebreaker scenario that we all have to spend 15 minutes looking up and doing the math on.

Instead of everyone doing all of that and scoreboard watching during the final game of the season, they just get to play a couple of games against one another and determine who goes to the postseason.

This is so much simpler and so much more fun.

It lessens the incentive to tank

Yes, teams are always going to tank when they’re out of playoff position. That’s the incentive that the NBA’s draft system inherently gives to teams — especially the really bad ones.

The worse you are, the better chance you have of getting a star when the season ends. That’s just how it works. The NBA absolutely hates tanking. How do you get rid of it? Give bad teams something to play for.

That’s what the play-in scenario is — especially for Western Conference teams that would probably be good if they were in the East.

For example, the Suns could’ve tanked their bubble stint away. They were in prime position to move up in the draft lottery, but they were just close enough to the Grizzlies at 8th to make a legitimate run for the 9th seed and trigger the play-in.

Next thing you know, the Devin Booker is hitting shots like this.

Oh, and this.

And now the Suns — winners of seven straight games — are in prime position to trigger a play-in scenario. Without this, they’re playing for nothing.

Finally, it just gives us great basketball

And isn’t that the whole point of this thing? Over the last few weeks, the stars playing for a chance to get the 8th seed have given us so many big moments.

Devin Booker just keeps hitting big shot after big shot. Rudy Gay has come to life for the Spurs. DeMar DeRozan looks like he’s in Toronto again.

Oh, did I mention that Damian Lillard probably earned himself the Bubble MVP off this performance alone?

And the fans have been on the edge of their seats to watch it all. All because of the play-in scenario. Thank the Basketball Gods.

Yes, there are some flaws in this system. The Eastern Conference has given us just about nothing with the Wizards. And the West, generally speaking, is always closer than the East.

And, yes, maybe 4 games is too wide of a range. Maybe it should be closer. But all the league has to do here is make a few tweaks to this new system and keep it moving.

Awful coronavirus circumstances aside, the NBA has found itself a gem. And it would be a total shame to let it fall by the wayside.

Keep the good times rolling, NBA.

Damian Lillard rips Paul George on the Clippers on Instagram: ‘You boys is chumps’

We won’t get this playoff series. But we need it.

Welp. This took an unexpected turn.

Damian Lillard was trolled out of the arena by Patrick Beverly and Marcus Morris on Saturday after missing two potential game winning free throws during the Trail Blazers game against the Clippers.

After the game, Lillard had some choice words for Beverley, Paul George and anyone else on the Clippers’ team who would’ve joined in on the trolls. The message was basically “I sent y’all home before so chill.”

The message was clearly received. Not too long after clips of Lillard’s response to Beverley’s troll reached the internet, the Clippers’ players jumped on Instagram to respond.

Patrick Beverley’s message? “Cancun on 3.” Ouch. Paul George’s message? “You getting sent home this year.”

Damian Lillard’s response? Man, it was cold.

Keep switching teams…running from the grind. You boys is chumps.”

Fam. Not only did Lillard let them know that the only reason Paul George is on that team is because he hit a 35 footer in his face last year, but he’s also calling out George for dipping out on Oklahoma City the way he did. And he called the Clippers “chumps” on top of that.

The Clippers and the Blazers will probably never play again this season. But, again, six more of these would be extremely nice.

Damian Lillard had the perfect response to Patrick Beverley’s troll after missing potential game-winning free throws

Ouch.

Patrick Beverley is probably the biggest pest in the NBA right now. And that’s mostly because it doesn’t stop on the court with him.

Even when he’s not playing, he’s trying to find ways to bother his opponent. He did that on Saturday during the Clippers game with the Trail Blazers after Damian Lillard was set up with two potentially game winning free throws.

Lillard and the Blazers were down 118-117 with just under 20 seconds to go when the Blazers’ guard drove to the rim and got to the free throw line.

With Lillard being the absolute master in the clutch that he normally is as well as an 87% free throw shooter,  just about everyone had to expect him to drain the free throws and put the Blazers in front.

He did not. He missed both. And Patrick Beverley, along with Marcus Morris, laughed him out for it. It was bad.

He even yelled “Dolla Time” when Lillard missed them both. Sheesh.

Then, after the game was over, he pulled out a familiar wave to send them off.

Seems familiar, right? Oh yeah! Here we go.

He absolutely trolled Lillard out of the building after this one. Basketball fans everywhere ate it up.

Damian Lillard stayed solid, though. His response to Beverley’s trolling was absolutely perfect.

“Asking me about Patrick Beverley, who, I sent him home before at the end of a game. Paul George just got sent home by me last year in the playoffs. So they know. The reason they reacting like that is because of what they expect from me, which is a sign of respect. And it just shows what I’ve done at a high clip more times than not. So, I’m not offended by it. If anything, it should just tell you how much it hurt them to go through what I put them through in those situations previously. ”

Nah. He was two seconds away from saying “Paul George is only there because I hit a 35 footer in his eye.” Sheesh.

Clearly, it’s still Lillard time.

NBA restart: 5 must-watch games to watch this weekend

The NBA is back, fam!

Basketball is officially back and we’re already in the swing of things.

Thursday’s games were absolutely incredible. We watched Zion Williamson’s return to the Pelicans but Rudy Gobert and the Jazz ended up stealing the show at the end.

Then, we had LeBron James and Anthony Davis just overcoming a 3-point barrage from Paul George and unbelievable defense from Kawhi Leonard to edge the Clippers out in their bubble opener.

That’s just the beginning, though. The NBA’s return is off to a tremendous start, but there’s plenty of more to come beginning with this weekend’s slate of games.

Here are the five games from the weekend that you need to tune into.

Portland Trail Blazers NBA Championship odds, picks and best bets

Assessing the betting odds and chances of the Portland Trail Blazers winning the Western Conference and the 2019-20 NBA Championship, with picks and best bets.

The Portland Trail Blazers were ninth in the Western Conference with a record of 29-37 when the 2019-20 NBA season was suspended. Below, we look at the BetMGM betting odds of the Trail Blazers winning the NBA Championship once play resumes with a 22-team format in Orlando, Fla., later this summer.

Portland Trail Blazers season recap

The Blazers opened the 2019-20 season going 14-20 through December following last season’s trip to the Western Conference Finals where they were swept by the Golden State Warriors 4-0. Portland averaged a sound 113.6 points per game this season, but allowed 115.3 points per contest to rank 13th in the conference. The Blazers were 15-17 from Jan. 1 to the time the season was suspended and just 4-6 in their final 10 games.

The Trail Blazers were led, as always, by PG Damian Lillard and SG CJ McCollum. Lillard was averaging 28.9 PPG with 7.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. McCollum averaged 22.5 PPG, 4.3 APG and 4.1 RPG. C Hassan Whiteside added 16.3 PPG and 14.2 RPG and surprise SF Carmelo Anthony was averaging 15.3 PPG.

Injuries to SF Rodney Hood (Achilles), and C’s Zach Collins (shoulder) and Jusuf Nurkic (leg) had taken a large toll.

Portland was even more disappointing to bettors. The Blazers were just 27-37-2 against the spread on the season, 37-29 against the Over/Under and topped the projected totals by an average of 2.2 PPG.

Portland Trail Blazers NBA Championship odds

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, June 11 at 5 p.m. ET.

With the Blazers being outside of the standard playoff picture, they’ll need to play their way in under the new 22-team format in Orlando. This is reflected in their championship futures odds, as they’re just +25000, 16th of all 22 teams.

The Trail Blazers do have two of the best players for this modified end to the regular season, though. Trust in Lillard and McCollum to get Portland to the postseason. There, things should be considered to be wide open.

A young team gained some much-needed postseason experience with last season’s run and veteran depth was added in the offseason and ahead of the 2019-20 NBA Trade Deadline. The TRAIL BLAZERS (+25000) are worth at least a small wager to win the 2019-20 NBA Championship.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Blazers to win the championship returns a profit of $2,500.

Portland Trail Blazers Western Conference odds

With the biggest championship favorites residing in the Western Conference, the Trail Blazers still have lofty odds to represent the West in the NBA Finals. Their +15000 odds rank ninth in the conference to match their position in the standings.

Bet the TRAIL BLAZERS (+15000) to win the Western Conference title. Lillard and McCollum are plenty good enough to go up against the top duos of the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets. Plus, Whiteside, Anthony and SF Trevor Ariza add quality depth.
