Moneyline (ML)

The Knicks (+155) pulled out their fourth straight win Saturday, beating the Detriot Pistons 95-92, while the Hawks (-189) took their third loss in four games in their last contest against the Boston Celtics, 112-107. The most glaringly obvious matchup edge on either side is New York’s rebounding against Atlanta’s. The Knicks have a plus-1.1 rebound differential per game, while Atlanta has a differential of minus-3.7 rebounds per game.

New York has the best offensive rebounding rate in the league and Atlanta is ranked 27th in defensive rebounding rate. The Knicks are going to feast off these boards and play up to their No. 3 ranking in second-chance points against Atlanta’s 28th ranking in opponent second-chance points.

NBA All-Star Game: Team LeBron takes Anthony Davis with first pick

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James went with his teammate Anthony Davis as Team LeBron and Team Giannis picked their teams.

In a shock to absolutely nobody, despite the way that LeBron James tried to sell it, Anthony Davis was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 All-Star Draft by Team LeBron.

Joining Davis and James on Team LeBron were the rest of the Western Conference All-Star starters: Dallas’ Luka Doncic, Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard and Houston’s James Harden.

Joining Team Giannis will he his first two picks Joel Embiid of the Sixers and Pascal Siakam of Raptors, followed by Boston’s Kemba Walker and finally Atlanta’s Trae Young.

With the first pick of the reserves, Giannis Antetokounmpo followed suit with LeBron by picking his teammate Khris Middleton of the Milwaukee Bucks. LeBron followed the that selection by picking Portland’s Damian Lillard, who scored 48 points in a win last Friday at the Lakers.

In fact, there were only six players in total who switched conferences among both teams. Utah’s duo of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell join Brandon Ingram on Team Giannis while Jayson Tatum, Ben Simmons and Domantas Sabonis will join West players in Team LeBron.

The All-Star Game is set for Feb. 16 in Anthony Davis’ hometown of Chicago.

Trae Young, Buddy Hield to compete in NBA 3-point contest

Former Oklahoma standouts Buddy Hield and Trae Young will be a part of the three-point contest as part of the NBA’s All-Star festivities.

Oklahoma as a state has had plenty of sharpshooters come and go since the state was just Indian Territory. The tradition continues during the 2020 NBA All-Star weekend.

Former Oklahoma standouts Buddy Hield and Trae Young will be a part of the three-point contest as part of the NBA’s All-Star festivities.

So far this season Buddy Hield has connected from deep 186 times, good for 37.6% through 50 games. The Sacramento King guard is averaging 20.3 points per game so far this season.

While at Oklahoma, Hield shot 31.7% in his four-year career and averaged 25.0 points per game his senior season.

Joining Hield, Trae Young has also lit it up from downtown. Young is shooting 36.7% from three. In just his second year Young was named an All-Star starter, making him the third Sooner to be named an All-Star. Young is 29.2 points and 9.0 assists per game.

The 3-point contest will be broadcasted live on Saturday, February 15th at 8p.m. CT on TNT.

Sixers react to defensive struggles against Hawks guard Trae Young

The Philadelphia 76ers react to a tough night defensively against Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, a 127-117 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday can be summed up with two words: Trae Young.

The explosive Hawks All-Star starter went off for 39 points, a career-high 18 assists, and six rebounds to lead Atlanta to the win. Due to Young’s brilliance, that opened up other things for the Atlanta as John Collins had 17 points and 20 rebounds, De’Andre Hunter had 15, and veteran Vince Carter had 14 thanks to Young’s production.

“Everywhere,” said Tobias Harris. “He’s a tough cover. Every time we play against him, he dominates the game.  He did tonight. You have to give him credit. He makes plays, he gets to the free-throw line, he makes the right reads, he gets downhill…you game plan for him and when you’re out there you really have to focus everything on him and tonight he just carved us apart.”

The Sixers were mostly defending him with young wings Matisse Thybulle and Shake Milton as coach Brett Brown tried to give Ben Simmons a break against him, but it was not working. They gave him too much attention and that opened up the rest of the Hawks offense.

“Just trying to judge the attention you give him,” explained Brown. “You give him a ton, and people reap the benefit of that. They get behind defenses, they squirt out and get open looks. I thought our best look was when we decided to go bigger, switch more, and just try to stay connected that way. I thought our young wings struggled tonight. They really struggled tonight, and he is difficult to guard.”

If you ask Simmons, the Sixers were a little too focused on what Young was doing rather than giving attention to everybody else.

“I think we were just too focused on what Trae was doing, and he was able to facilitate,” said Simmons. “He’s a great player, he was able to find his guys, and make plays as a point guard.”

The Sixers will run into another All-Star guard on Saturday when they face the Boston Celtics. [lawrence-related id=24585,24581,24574]

All-Star Trae Young torments Sixers all night, Hawks win it 127-117

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young tormented the Philadelphia 76ers all night long to win it at home.

The Philadelphia 76ers were looking to keep the good vibes going after picking up two big wins at home. Considering they were playing the Atlanta Hawks, the worst team in the Eastern Conference, many believed it was a foregone conclusion that the Sixers would win this one.

That’s the thing with this talented, yet unpredictable, Sixers team. You never know which one is going to show up.

They got off to a tough start and they ended up falling victim to the explosive All-Star Trae Young and the Hawks 127-117. Young worked the Sixers to the tune of 39 points, a career-high 18 assists, and six rebounds as Philadelphia could not figure out how to handle him. He even had a double-double in the first quarter to start the game.

Philadelphia was led by their own All-Star in Ben Simmons who had 31 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals. They received a big game out of Shake Milton who scored a career-high 27 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds, Tobias Harris added 21 points added nine rebounds, and Joel Embiid had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

All of those impressive stat lines were not enough as the Hawks were mostly in control of this one as they led by as many as 16. It’s another disappointing road effort for the Sixers as they continue to drop these games on the road that they shouldn’t.

They will head to Boston now on Saturday to face the rival Celtics. [lawrence-related id=24581,24574,24567]

Trae Young’s incredible game had some Kobe Bryant coincidences: ‘He was with me tonight’

His stats are a huge coincidence.

Atlanta Hawks sensation Trae Young paid tribute to Kobe Bryant on Sunday night after news broke that the NBA legend had died in a helicopter crash. The guard started the game wearing Bryant’s No. 8 and took an eight-second violation.

He then put on a show, scoring 45 points on 13-of-24 shooting with six threes and 14 assists in a 152-133 win over the Washington Wizards. Afterwards, he spoke about one of the final conversations he had with the man who mentored him: “He was just telling me how much he’s seen my game progress and he’s just been happy for me.”

As someone pointed out, the last player to total 45 points or more with under 25 shot attempts against the Washington Wizards was … Bryant, back in 2006. What’s more, Young took 24 (Bryant’s other iconic number he wore) shots and finished with 81 percent shooting from the foul line, reminding fans of Bryant’s 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.

Young tweeted “he was with me tonight” when he found that out:

There were other coincidences involving Devin Booker too:

Trae Young honored Kobe Bryant by wearing No. 8 and taking an 8-second violation

Amazing gesture.

The younger generation of NBA players grew up watching Kobe Bryant’s legendary career with the Lakers. And those young players are often quick to name Kobe as a player they idolized.

That’s certainly the case with Hawks All-Star point guard Trae Young.

As the NBA world offered their condolences to Bryant’s family after a deadly helicopter crash killed the Lakers legend, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others, many teams took their tributes to Sunday’s NBA games. The Raptors, Spurs, Clippers, Magic, Pelicans and Celtics all took 24-second violations to honor Bryant (he wore No. 24 in the latter part of his career).

The Hawks star, though, had his own tribute for Kobe.

Ahead of the Hawks’ game against the Wizards, Young waited until the last possible moment to take off his warmup jacket. Once Young removed the jacket, it was revealed that he was going to wear No. 8 for the game. Kobe started his NBA career wearing No. 8, and Young normally wears No. 11 with Atlanta.

The tribute carried over into the game. Upon receiving the tipoff, Young took an eight-second violation to honor Bryant.

Trying to hold back the emotion, the Wizards players offered their respects to Young for the gesture. It was tastefully done from the Hawks star. The Wizards responded by taking a 24-second violation as a tribute to Kobe.

Oklahoma’s Trae Young pays tribute to late Kobe Bryant, wears Bryant’s old jersey number

Oklahoma’s own paid tribute to one of basketball’s legends. Trae Young donned the late Kobe Bryant’s jersey number in Atlanta Hawks game.

Oklahoma’s own paid tribute to one of basketball’s legends.

Earlier Sunday, NBA icon Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in southern California. The Los Angeles Lakers’ star has taken many of players younger than him under his wing, and one of those was former Sooners’ star Trae Young.

Young, a member of the Atlanta Hawks, paid tribute to Bryant by donning his old jersey number, No. 8, in the early moments of Sunday night’s game against the Washington Wizards.

Young would later change back into his normal No. 11 soon after.

The former Oklahoma point guard was visibly emotional prior to Sunday night’s game as Young embraced his mom and loved ones after pre-game warmups.

One of Young’s biggest fans was Bryant’s daughter, Gianna Maria (GiGi), who also died in the crash. He announced that GiGi has gone to three NBA games this season—two of which were to Young’s game.

“This S*** can’t be real,” Young tweeted. “This the first moment I was able to meet Gianna Maria. She’s been to only three games this year, two of them were mine. She told me I was here favorite player to watch. I can’t believe this. Rest easy GiGi.”

Young also reflected on Bryant’s impact on him with a tweet soon after news broke.

“All the lessons, all the advice, every word you ever told me will stick with me forever,” Young tweeted. “Thank you Kobe.”

The HoopsHype Daily: Trae Young earns All-Star starter honors (controversially)

Trae Young’s play and stats indicate he deserved to be an All-Star, but it’s still a bit rare for a player on such a bad team to be a starter.

RARE ALL-STAR OCCURRENCE: Prior to this season, only seven players in league history received All-Star honors despite playing for teams that would go on to win under 20 percent of their games that campaign. Among them: 1952-53 Neil Johnston (12-57 Warriors), 1967-68 Don Kojis (15-67 Rockets), 1968-69 Gail Goodrich and Dick Van Arsdale (16-66 Suns), 1970-71 John Johnson (15-67 Cavs), 1972-73 John Block (9-73 Sixers) and 2007-08 Dwyane Wade (15-67 Heat). Which is what makes the fact that Trae Young was named an All-Star starter yesterday a bit historic, in its own way. Young’s Hawks this season are 11-34, a 24.4 percent win percentage, and the second-worst record in the NBA this year.

Even so, it’s hard to fault Young for Atlanta’s record considering the plethora of injuries that have impacted them this year. What’s more, with Young on the floor, the Hawks are so much better than when he sits, proving his ridiculous raw statistics – 29.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 8.6 assists on 44.7/37.3/83.9 shooting splits – are far from empty. Also, for what it’s worth, Young’s numbers outpace Wade’s for the year he made the All-Star Game while playing for a tanking Heat team, so there’s that to take into account, too.

Young wasn’t the only player to be named to his first All-Star roster yesterday. Dallas’ Luka Doncic and Toronto’s Pascal Siakam also received the distinction for the first time in their careers, with the latter beating out Jimmy Butler for the honor, who many thought could have been a frontcourt starter in the East this season.

Other fun first-time All-Star notes: Doncic became the youngest international player ever to be selected, and is the youngest All-Star starter since LeBron James back in 2005. Solid honors for the burgeoning Slovenian superstar.

LATEST TRADE SCUTTLE: Another day and another batch of trade rumors as we approach the 2020 deadline.

The frontcourt-needy Clippers have Thaddeus Young on their radar, according to multiple reports. For more on potential Los Angeles trade targets and candidates, as well as their biggest needs, click here.

Contenders are still holding out hope the Knicks reverse course on their decision to keep Marcus Morris this season.

Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns and Milwaukee’s Eric Bledsoe have been deemed basically untouchable by their respective general managers.

CHOPPY WATERS: Things are a bit dicey for the Clippers behind the scenes at the moment, as the team is having trouble figuring out who their leader is due to the quiet natures of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Kawhi’s load management stuff has also reportedly caused some issues.

Patrick Beverley and Patrick Patterson have vehemently denied the report, by the way.

A NEW ROLE: Jae Crowder is used to suiting up for playoff-caliber teams, which might not the case this season as a member of the Grizzlies. Even so, he’s happy and bought into his role as a leader for the rebuilding, fun and young team in Memphis.

POPULAR OWNER SOUNDS OFF: Mark Cuban goes off on a variety of fascinating topics, including nearly trading for Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce, the sham of the Olympics and much more.

HEIGHTENED ACCURACY: NBA teams used to give favorable treatment to their players when they suited up at home and dished out passes that even remotely looked like assists. That trend has ended, though, as teams now are giving much more accurate assist numbers to their home players.

WILLING TO HELP: Zach LaVine wouldn’t mind having a say with the Bulls’ decision-making on the trade market. A lot of players would probably love to have that power, too.

A NEAR-TRADE: The Heat and Kings nearly agreed upon a trade that would have sent Trevor Ariza to Miami before Portland stepped in and acquired him. Ariza’s 3-and-D prowess would have helped the Heat out, especially with Justise Winslow injured.

AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT: An NBA super-fan has gone to 29 out of the league’s 30 arenas, all within the last 30 days with just one more to go, in order to get on the Jumbotron at each stop. So far, his mission has been a success.

REBRANDING: The Knicks are hiring the same firm that helped make over the Nets, in order to get a makeover of their own. Maybe that will lead to players accepting boat-loads of cash to play for them.

DRAWING EYEBALLS: Zion’s debut pulled big-time ratings, which would explain how the Pelicans ended up with so many national TV games this year. The kid is going to be a big-time draw for the league.

CONTINUED BAD LUCK: The porous injury luck continues for the Sixers, who will now be without starting guard Josh Richardson for at least two-to-three weeks with a strained hamstring.
